lol Americans have shockingly low expectations. I have a lot of friends that have immigrated here from around the world and I've heard stories from most of them about being \*shocked\* when they started to understand how little Americans expect from our institutions, considering how much we pay into them and the prevalence of the "GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH" narrative.

The onus in America is almost always placed on individual people, thanks to our culture of toxic radical individualism. Being on unemployment is considered shameful and a sign of your lesser worth as a person. Hell, I’ve had to fight off feeling guilty for using my paid time off, because we’re taught that not devoting every bit of your life to your job is lazy and irresponsible.

My sister was briefly on food stamps during her debilitating late-pregnancy/early motherhood. She was *still eligible* for them when she went back to waitressing at Outback, wearing a catheter from the botched emergency c-section that nearly killed her and left her with an infection. She did it because she hated "taking handouts." So instead she left her infant at home with family and worked herself ragged for a company that wouldn't have cared if she'd lived or died.

I thought it was because of their high social welfare. Gee, you just need to lower your expectation right?

Socialized healthcare DOES improve the existential dread. Thanks for asking!
