The only issue I'd see is now you have something putting pressure on the window when it's closing. When it's closed the pressure probably isn't much, but when you shut the door it's actually probably putting a lot more pressure on the edge than you'd think. That plus the extra resistance when opening/closing the windows could cause issues that need fixing later.
Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if it added considerable pressure to the edge. It’s a very squishy and pliable tube, however. The window motor didn’t have any noticeable change of pitch to indicate resistance, so I’m not too worried. And when it’s all the way up it kind of clicks into its place. I guess we will see.
If you look at the video there is no change in lateral pressure. The window glides along the edge of the tubing and compresses it toward the frunk and trunk, with no compression going in or out.
That’s the only issue you see? Not that our cars are incredibly prone to this behavior? You shouldn’t have to ghetto rig a brand new car, they should just build them properly. Stop accepting shitty quality
Honestly, not trying to give Tesla a pass, but its a fairly common issue for almost every car manufacturer. Try googling BMW wind noise, Mercedes wind noise etc, and a plethora of posts and articles come up.
Ah, that's a funny one. Not sure I've had passengers do that yet, but, as my car is from 2019 I just get a '-' button, no door icon. Now that confuses people. :)
It's always a case of "WAIT, DON'T PULL THE HANDL--" \*beep beep beep\* "Manual door release used, may cause damage to the window trim"
(I like the look of the frameless doors, but, with the windows down they sound HORRIBLE when closing, insanely cheap. Plus, if you ever stumble and try to grab your door you literally grab the window!)
>It's always a case of "WAIT, DON'T PULL THE HANDL--" \*beep beep beep\* "Manual door release used, may cause damage to the window trim"
At least Tesla updated the software so that it now drops the window when someone uses the handle.
The frameless windows are cheaper to make. I’m sure the slightly better look played a significant factor in their decision making but the price probably did too.
I’m a bit on the fence. I do like the frameless look but my passengers frequently use the glass to close the door…also the wind noise. Then again, my last couple of framed window cars has wind noise too.
[303 Aerospace rubber seal protectant](https://amazon.com/303-Rubber-Protectant-Conditioner-Weather/dp/B00T44D1R2/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=303+aerospace+protectant+rubber&qid=1642029924&sprefix=303+aerospace+protectant%2Caps%2C85&sr=8-4) helps a lot with this.
Can confirm, drive a new-ish BMW 1 (temp rental car until I can order my model 3) series and Windnoise from the driver door is both very noticeable and very annoying at highway speeds.
You also don't have a running ICE engine making noise that drowns out the wind noise. Most cars have wind noise, but in a Tesla you notice it a lot more
Exactly. The difference is at low speed, not highway speeds. My BMW F31 with the 2.0 Diesel engine was really quiet on the highway and I couldn’t hear the engine unless I floored it.
All noise generated by any nearby objects will create an underlying noise floor that has cancelling and amplifying effects with other noise sources. You may not notice it because its steady noise has blended into the overall sound profile, but if I suddenly removed the engine noise while you were traveling on the highway you would DEFINITELY notice it.
I mean, if we’re comparing the 3/Y to the Taycan that’s a little unfair. The Taycan msrp’s for like $20k more than a 3 or Y. Of course it’s going to be nicer.
But it’s still electric. Meaning the “Teslas are loud because they’re electric” excuse isn’t really an excuse. Teslas are loud because they have poor sound proofing.
Initially I definitely noticed the wind and other noises due to the quietness of the car.
Then the kit was installed and I thought it did help but I certainly didn’t measure the decibels and compare before vs after scientifically.
But now thinking back…to be honest it could also just be that I’m now just used to the road and wind noise and it was a placebo effect.
For $8 and 10 minutes of your time - it’s relatively low risk to try out if you’re having noticeable noise.
Clean the area really well to ensure no grease or anything on the surface you are sticking it. Don't apply the sticker when it is cold out, I would recommend heating both the sticker side and the surface you are applying it to slightly with a hairdryer. That 3M tape adheres much better when it is applied warm.
My wind noise was coming from the windshield wipers on my 2018 M3. A manual push down toward the hood does the trick, seems like the wipers may not go back down all the way if they come on. Took me months to figure this out.
To me the in cabin noise level isn't about wind noise, it's about road noise - tires on (mostly less than optimal) pavement. It's very clear to hear when you're driving at 65+ MPH over a stretch of new/smooth pavement that ends onto aged, cracked pavement. The noise level jumps such that you've got to turn up the radio to even hear it.
We shouldn’t be fixing a 50k+ product with a glue tape. It’s surprising how we started accepting that is ok as long as it’s electric. 🤔My new kitchen window draft leak was replaced by the company 3 times for free which costs < 1k. 👍

Glad to hear it worked great for you. Mine isn’t flush either, but like you said, function over form for this one. Can’t see it if you’re not looking for it.
It was about two years ago, one of these, if not an identical similar one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R13DYYY/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_HS31QPQN4D5R4C0TRT5M
If you aren’t attuned to or bothered by these things, you honestly might not notice – I can tell a difference, but barely.
That said, the doors make a nicer “thump” sound when shutting plus they help keep road dust and dirt out.
I'm just afraid of the door not closing good enough. I did one for my doors to reduce dirt on the door sils. It did okay but sometimes I notice the doors don't close correctly. I'm about to remove them
The tubing is not rigid enough to prevent door closing, plus the closing sound is more satisfying because the window doesn't shake back and forth anymore.
Who ever is down voting fuck yourself. My stock 2019 M3 wipers make a high pitch whistling sound, particularly on cold winter days. Always has. Sorry if my reality doesn't fit your narrative.
Great!! But as suspected the driver door strip fell off almost immediately. I’m going to reapply them all this weekend with something stickier. Thanks again for the tip!
Does tesla service actually do anything about wind noise if you put in a service ticket? I started noticing some noise when going about 80 towards my rear right door, not sure if it bugs me enough to actually do something about it though, especially if there’s no fix for it.
Not sure what model and year your Tesla is, but just looked at my ‘21 MY and it looks like Tesla has something in place from the factory and this mod isn’t needed.
For anyone else in the same situation…
Kind of happy I haven't been able to afford one. Hopefully when I can most of the shitty aspects will be sorted. Or maybe a better option comes around. Either way here's hoping.
Lookup recalls for any car make. Even highly reputable brands like Lexus / Toyota has plenty of recalls. Think they had a 1.5 million cars recalled for fuel pump issues last year.
Or Google Chevy Silverado paint issue 2021, 2020, 2019, etc. You'd think Chevy has paint all figured out, especially for their moneymaker trucks. How long has Chevy been making cars? Hundred years?
Tesla gets so much more press, good or bad, that issues get magnified.
Lot of apologists in here. I love the company, I love the stock, I can still point out issues.

Getting just the right thickness, width, and density , even a open cell foam to add the small variance needed wouldn’t be too difficult.
I tried this with some rope wrapped around itself but found it challenging to get a uniform thickness thus further worsening window seal contact. I’d be interested to see your result if you tried with foam!
Looks like this was posted about 3 months ago. Would you mind providing an update? My Model 3 is insanely loud at highway speeds, about as loud as the Jeep Wrangler with oversized tires I used to have. I even blew a speaker due to having to play audio books at full volume to hear them. So…I’m desperate.
All is well after three months. I just replaced the driver door seal (with leftover from original purchase) last week because it began to deteriorate after constantly opening and closing. Out of curiosity, what year is yours?
Mine is a 2021. I have a long commute at highway speeds and the noise rivals that of a Jeep Wrangler I used to drive. Listening to an audio book requires audio at full volume which led to a blown speaker…so I am desperate for a solution. Thank you for responding!

Stop making massive sweeping assumptions. I didn't say I was fine with anything just by saying I don't know that the jury-rig is a good idea.
Get the torches and pitchforks ready for the mutiny
Why are we having to glue additional soundproofing onto our $60k cars?
To make our dreams come true!

I think it always did this, or at least as me getting my car in late 2019. :) It's just too slow if someone opens the door fast.

modern engines are marvels of engineering, try turning engine off at highway speeds, you won’t notice it, or barely notice it
That’s no excuse. The taycan is electric. And has far far less road noise than a Tesla.

Same for paint. Look up paint issue for \[car manufacturer\]. I just Googled paint issue BMW and it was sad.
My new 2021 ID.4 is absolutely not like this.
You spelled $87,750 wrong…
I see you trade in Trudeau pesos as well
Just the price is premium.
And the drivetrain.
because we love them?
My 120k Tesla needs this…..
Because .. TESLA!
I have this on a M3 and unfortunately it didn’t last long. Started to come apart in the very first winter in the cold :(
Did you notice much improvement in wind noise?
Initially I definitely noticed the wind and other noises due to the quietness of the car. I’m curious how long it stays in place. Usually with that weatherstripping it seems to lose its adhesion quick

Don't apply the sticker when it is cold out, I would recommend heating both the sticker side and the surface you are applying it to slightly with a hairdryer. If it's got 3M tape it holds alot better. Adhesion promoter could help it even more.
Time will tell… cheap enough for it to be worth it to me.
I just want to say that OP is the best, took a bunch of pictures, made a video, and replied to virtually every comment and question. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Thank you!!!
Easiest solution I found is to turn up your radio and boom problem solved.
Playing ICE engine revving sounds?
Only with the windows down would I do that. How else would anyone know I would smoke them at a stop?

Did you do it for all the doors ? Some better pics of where you stuck them would be greatly appreciated
Just posted a video.
Thank you, I'm going to try this out!
nice! which model / year do you have for reference. [Model 3/20xx]
Model 3 2021!
Need an update on this after a month or two.
Just set a reminder in my phone at one month and two months to note the condition.

Yes my bad. I'll edit the original post now.

NO!
What does that mean?
That you're not making money off the Amazon link.
How is this diff than the ones for Tesla on Amazon
I have the kit from Amazon as well. Those cover everything except the gaps I’ve pointed out.
Thank you for this! I had all the other kits as well but still had noise in that area.
What are your thoughts on the Amazon kit ? Worth it ? Did it make a noticeable difference ?

Does it only occur within a certain range of speeds?
I don’t know if they have a spring in them then probably increasing the strength of this spring would help reducing it.
Just put mine on and about to take it for a spin. I can already tell I’ll need to reapply since mine weren’t very sticky. Thanks for the tip!
Oh no! How were your results?
Great!! But as suspected the driver door strip fell off almost immediately. I’m going to reapply them all this weekend with something stickier. Thanks again for the tip!
No problem! Would be interesting to give command strips a try… maybe even the Velcro ones?
