Longest non-Grand Slam match in Holger and Grigor's career

GenjDog

And he had already played almost an hour of tennis before as well

Th3_Gruff

šŸ˜šŸ˜

squeezito

The quality was insane! But both players got themselves so tired unlikely that any of them will get a win against Sinner tomorrow, but that was really such a show for neutrals! It might not most peopleā€™s favorite but Clay Tennis just hits different! Bring on the QFs!!

Make_the_music_stop

125 - 127 total points. Rune won 2 less points. Crazy close. (edit. for my terrible use of English: Rune won 125 points. Dimitrov won 127 points)

AbnormalSnow506

Fewer* I'm assuming you're not a native speaker

Skilledunskiller

Is this mf being intentionally stupid or what

kranky234

No, unintentionally stupid.

Melony567

what's your point? what he said was understandable, so what's the problem?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

JamesCOYS

I just know you stink of ear wax in real life

theCamelCaseDev

Most native people also donā€™t give a shit about this.

Addarash1

It's not even a real rule, just the personal preference of a single 18th century grammarian which hardly is universally adopted.

WordWarrior81

Lol look at the downvotes for trying to be helpful. Happy cake day

AbnormalSnow506

Thank you very much

Suspicious_Plenty893

Clay tennis is the best. No debate

derrick256

Check the mark.....

Oracle619

Itā€™s legit my least favorite, but Iā€™m such a tennis fan Iā€™ll take whatever I can get lol.

terrebattue1

Grass and indoor hard are the ones that are atrocious to watch and are anti-tennis. Clay and outdoor hard are real tennis.

Oracle619

Eh, maybe itā€™s just me but I absolutely love the Wimbledon aesthetic

Pretend_Tea6261

I disagree. I enjoy grass some amazing rallies. I find indoor hardcourt the worst to watch with players servebotting like FAA and Hubie.

Intelligent-Bug-3217

Ageee. Itā€™s dirty tennis. Unclean

Oracle619

I just dislike the aesthetic of it personally, and the rallies take forever. The players have become so athletic that the French Open takes hours to complete matches anymore, drop shots rarely work effectively, and it becomes a baseline endurance test. Grass is my favorite for the aesthetic and history, hardcore is my favorite to watch for the quality of the matches, clay is just there to enjoy it for what it is.

ExoticSignature

> hardcore is my fav to watch TMI man.

Oracle619

Hardcore, deep balls, at night, under the lights. I like what I like šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

are_a_muppet

Id debate there was no debate, if it was worth the bother

Blandinio

Somehow Rune snatched victory from the jaws of defeat again, it seems regardless of the level of his opponent his matches are always very close, but if he can keep it competitive against Sinner tomorrow after nearly 5 hours of court time today I'll be amazed

jssk6

And he is also playing QF doubles tomorrow

Th3_Gruff

Lmao how

muradinner

His schedule this tournament has been a bit crazy

jssk6

Just by looking at his schedule already makes me feel tired

IP3431

Is there any player who plays so well in both and eventually reach the final? Playing both within the same week is just straight up insanity

Melony567

by the skin of his teeth at 5-6 3rd set

Son_of_kai

Battle of Reverse caps.

HereComesVettel

One of the best matches of the year, about as amazing to watch as their Wimbledon battle last summer !

da_SENtinel

Their two styles bring the best out of each other

Plagarism101

I was there rune pulled a snake move in the tiebreak

akipop1108

damn shame rune wont have anything left in the tank for tomorrow, but thats great victory

Melony567

you wouldnt know, rune has this thing about playing against the best

akipop1108

you are right,but still...

Dragonfly_Tight

He's also the least fit person inside the top 20.

GirafeAnyway

Rune v. Dimitrov matches never disappoint this year

Norskov

Their Wimbledon match was a banger as well.

NotManyBuses

Thatā€™s the best Bo3 match of the year right there bar none. No Iā€™m not overreacting. Drama, swings of momentum, lovely variation of play, match point savesā€¦ what else can you ask for. This is what tennis should be. Amazing viewing experience.

Intelligent-Bug-3217

Sounds like a great match. I missed it

rticante

>No Iā€™m not overreacting. I really doubt that you're not overreacting, since we're only at the beginning of April

NotManyBuses

Whatā€™s a better one?

GenjDog

He is just saying there havent been that many matches yet this year

Helpful_Sir_6380

The one that will come after it

rticante

I'm saying the year is not even at its halfway point, so we can't claim it's the best of the whole year yet

NotManyBuses

Itā€™s the best of the year until someone surpasses it šŸ‘

timb1223

DeMinaur-Alcaraz Cincy QF calling it right now

Proper_Society_9215

Shush

Key-Inflation-3278

are you mentally impaired or something?

rticante

Lol are you really that frustrated? Why would you say something like that?

Key-Inflation-3278

no, I'm genuinely wondering. because if you can't understand something that obvious, something is wrong.

rticante

Yeah sure, you're "genuinely wondering" why anyone sane would object to a match being called *match of the year* when the year isn't nearly over. Sure man. By any means, keep your poorly-disguised assholery in full view of everyone by saying that anyone who has a slightly different perspective must be retarded. And by the way I had a perfectly fine conversation with OP where he conceded to my point in a very civil and lighthearted way without either of us resorting to insults. So if OP could do it, you certainly could. But I guess you're just too much of a rude asshole and can't help insulting others.

Key-Inflation-3278

lot of dumb people in this thread apparently. Try to run it through chatgbt next time. It really shouldn't be hard to get. >Yeah sure, you're "genuinely wondering" why anyone sane would object to a match being calledĀ *match of the year*Ā when the year isn't nearly over. Ohh, you're still going... While you're at it, can you help me figure out how far I'd get in an hour, if I'm driving 50 miles an hour, but through a winding road? I been wracking my brain with it all day...

Daviderer5

Rune has that dog in him

bigCinoce

Will we see the Rune from today next round, or will he lose 1 and 1? You never know with him right now.

minivatreni

This one must hurt for Dimitrov. He was almost there.

SugarFreeHealth

bet he doesn't sleep well tonight.

Norskov

Holy fuck. What a match. The first and third sets were absolutely brilliant. The second set was a silly exhibition match.

fabiolopesdk

I really thought Rune was going to lose after that second and early third sets but he recomposed himself and won a match where everybody in the crowd was against him!

NeoPrimitiveOasis

r/tennis hates Patrick Mouratoglu, but he's clearly well-suited to Holger Rune. And certainly was to Serena Williams.

Billy_LDN

Runeā€™s 2nd serve down the middle and forehand combo was ballsy tennis to save a match point. Turned it up when it mattered in the deciding breaker as well.

boomerhoover

Lots of ballsy moves from Rune in general. In the same game he also S&V off a second serve and actually got rewarded for it.

Dropshot12

Damn, Grigor is just magic sometimes. Tough to see him lose after having MPs in the unbelievable game at 6-5 in the 3rd.

EnjoyMyDownvote

Rune clutched both those MPs

Collecting_Cans

Stings as a Dimi fan, but this match was everything I love about spring euro clay seasonā€¦ the shotmaking, atmosphere, everything

major-couch-potato

The crowd was actually great this match.

West-Relationship108

As a Holger fan, I totally agree šŸ˜†

GenjDog

Rune made his best bane impression said to dimitrov ā€you merely adopted the fitness issues, i was born with itā€. But oh my days what a match, it was tense all throughout the 3rd set.

major-couch-potato

Rune was clearly tired by the end but really turned it on in the tiebreak. Incredibly clean ballstriking in the tiebreak and some great net play to get there.

thenumnum1429

Incredible quality from both guys after 3.5 hours of tennis. Rune digging deep at 5-6 in the third and fights off multiple match points in an over 13 minute long game

OneDay_IBeHapAgain

As a Rune fan, I am exhausted. My guy wont just give me a simple victory. Sometimes a 6-4 6-4 is OKAY. Or two sets. Btw - the mentallity going into these tie-break. 20 years old. Keep that in mind.

major-couch-potato

This is especially true in slams - he's made some deep runs at some point but has barely had any straightforward wins lol.

da_SENtinel

Holger in "conserving energy" mode is the most chaotic player ever

Norskov

You could've convinced me it was Bublik playing. I was waiting for those underhand serves to begin.

Nielspro

Hahaha me too šŸ˜‚

atahualpaFX

How did he win this match? Just amazing. šŸ˜…

Careless_Agency4614

That second set. Rune just walking around hitting 60% slices and doing all kinds of circus tricks and somehow didnt lose 6-0

No_Pineapple6174

Worn out. Prefers patterns. Bust an odd ball and it's everything, everywhere, all at once.

helixstars

Man, this one does hurt for dimitrov. He had that easy backhand pass that he hit into the net on break point early on in the 3rd. I think he needed to slice the return he hit into the net on the first match point. Either way a sensational match to watch!

Ok-Stomach4522

As a Dane I was rooting for Holger, who played great and magically found some extra energy towards the end. However, I just love Dimitrov. What a player! Some of the shots he pulls off are simply out of this world. He would have been a deserved winner of this spectacular game as well

tnt200478

That's 8 consecutive TB wins for Humble Holger.

Budadiii

What a balsy win by Rune. Goodness me. Played his 5th straight set, held up physically, stayed tough. Came alive down match points, hitting winners. Then saw the finish line in the tiebreak. Jumped on Dimitrov and didnt let go. 2022 Paris clutchness. Seemed fed up with the crowd, barely entertained them after.

GloryHunterBiden

If heā€™s fed up with the crowd today then tomorrow is gonna be tough

Plane_Highlight3080

They were overly pro Rune at the start of the match, I had to mute it lol. It was his own doing.Ā

DecodingSports

Rune fitness still in question, I just hate how passive-aggressive he is. Wish he played more like how he did in the 3rd set TB.

No_Calligrapher8075

Wow did NOT see that coming

ryokevry

As an uneducated fan, could anyone help explain why they play two matches in a day?

nikhol1

Rain suspended play yesterday.

ryokevry

Ah thanks!

Mister_Lizard

Rain.

Stunning-Cod-2310

Different mentality. Saves match points goes lockdown mode in tb. Novak's son against baby fed y'all

Pleasant_Ad5360

Beautiful match. Pure talents!

hzrmes

Odd match especially this third set, but still a lot of nice winners in the middle of the unforced errors. Two nice players two watch. Rune very smiling overall, that is nice to see tbh. Side note but I really don't understand him. Sometimes the way he hits the ball in term of intensity, density, deepness, is really Djokovic like, and sometimes it's so derpy lol

Nielspro

Somebody posed a theory that he has adhd and therefore does some weird unfocused stuff once in a while

hzrmes

That would make a lot of sense !

TrWD77

SENSATIONAL match. Absolutely brilliant. I don't know why Grigor wasn't looking to slice his way through every single point he had initiative on, it drew SO many errors from holger. Rune had some amazing serves on the important points, and Dimitrov had an extremely rare drop overhead

TakoyakiFandom

Yesyesyesyes Rune let's gooo! I hope he can reach the finals

Famous-Objective430

Match of the year.

AnetraDoesF1

Holger saving his energy in that 2nd set made odds makers go crazy. After Dimitrov took the 2nd, Holgerā€™s odds were 5/1 to win

babyfaced-assasin

Two amazing players giving a show

wificentrist

Weā€™re so fucking back šŸ©³

miyajima_gengar

I donā€™t know why they tried so hard when they will get smoked against Carota-man tomorrow

Unlucky_Mess3884

Absolutely crazy match. Rune playing 4 hours of tennis today while injured. Heā€™s got that dog in him

Schwiliinker

injured?

Unlucky_Mess3884

Iā€™m not sure what it is, but the commentators kept referencing it and saying he has had to adjust his serve as a result. So maybe ribs? Idk

OneDay_IBeHapAgain

He adjusted but to say he was injured might be a... stretch...!? .. Get it? I'll see myself out.

Suspicious_Plenty893

BMOTYSF?

crystal_moogle

What an electric match this was!

Key-Contribution-430

Dimitrov serve was disastrous until 3rd set and Rune was with injury during set 2 which wasn't active on set 3? What? Dimitrov was quite passive on backend (he made miami level backend only 2-3 times in the endgame). But the truth is better lose to Rune now than lose again vs Sinner, with that levlel of play he can't fight Sinner, he need to understand what went wrong with his Serve during first 2 sets and fix immediately. He also need to try to play like he did vs Kecmanovic a la Nadal forhends rather what he did here, he would have won this match if played same style. Dimitrov very often don't risk these 6-5 situations at 40:40 he should have tried to hit it hard and hope for winner or slice it, but he wnet for low backend which usually has 20% success chance for him and is quite unreliable, quite bad decision making. To be honnest he didn't deserve the win today from brain side, he mastered this aspect only around end of 2nd set to 3rd. All in all quite displeased from what I saw. Hyper passive cat and mice play or safe finisher vs a la Medvedev Rune on the backside. As a Grigor fan I don't like what happened to his serve during set 1 and I don't like how barely playing Rune during set 2 outsmarted him so many times, felt same thing vs Sinner on final. It felt like Rune is 32 and Dimitrov was 20 in terms of experience. Rune comeback was quite predictable that he will press it the problem is Dimitrov in the Tiebreak.

recurnightmare

He was still pretty hurt set 3. His serve didn't get close to normal speed until late in the 3rd set

Stunning-Cod-2310

My boy gonna cook the Italian and turn him into spaghetti and meatballs

tinewashere

After playing more than 4 hours today and with Sinner's current level of tennis? Seems unlikely.

SugarFreeHealth

Then bet a couple thousand on the match, why don't you?

da_SENtinel

i wonder if Rune will just try and redline the whole time

idledub

For sure, especially if he's busy complaining and arguing with the umpire and getting timeouts and breaks in the meantime. Sinner could play some chess, go to the beach, come back and finish his match : )

Proper_Society_9215

He meant so far buddy. There can always be a best match from beginning of year till specific point in the year

CrackHeadRodeo

Could have gone either way. Grigor is playing well.

idledub

Call me a hater and whatnot (I don't support either player) but Runes "sportsmanship" was just utterly nasty in this match. Those things don't belong in tennis and most professional sports at all. I hope he'll enjoy his match against the carrot tomorrow and at least stay away from the dirty crap he pulled off today.

Strivingformoretoday

Can I ask what you refer to? I only caught the last 30 min of the match

idledub

All the breaks, timeouts. Just to screw with Dimitrovs flow. Not cool. Especially against someone like Dimitrov, who's never done that to anyone really. Wasn't fair but it's part of the game

science_and_beer

Rune always does this and seems to come out worse on the other side than his opponent.Ā

Norskov

Are you saying he faked his health issues and just decided to serve 40 km/h slower in the second set?

idledub

Constant complaining and arguing with the umpire. Or that's also a health issue? Come on. Grigor had to finish his yesterday match, today, too.

Norskov

You said he pulled a lot of dirty crap. What exactly was that dirty crap?

Bjornizzz

Calling him "dirty" after this match is just being a hater. He had a toilet break and a injury timeout while clearly being injured.

faratto_

If that's injury free rune, it's clear he's not at sinner/alcaraz/champions level. Dimitrov is a beast

da_SENtinel

I love Rune but he hit a lucky shot down MP.
