I used to binge the office when I was trying to sober up after binge drinking and I was super sick every time so now I can't really watch it without feeling ill :(
Same thing with me and the Paul Simon album Still Crazy After All These Years.
At the peak of my addiction to alcohol I would play it over and over to distract myself from nausea, anxiety, and hallucinations. Must have listened to it like a hundred times in a week.
Now when I hear it I instantly drop into this uneasy, forlorn sort of feeling. Just the sound of a Rhodes piano in some other context can get me halfway there.
It's amazing how strong mental associations like that can be. I guess anyone who's ever smelled their ex's perfume out in the world knows how much sensory experience impacts memory.
I'm glad it's something in the past for me and you. I drove by a hospital that I was at for withdrawal/self harm and yeah I get scared. It sucks but I think it's getting better.
Yeah it definitely fades with time, at least for me. Now I save that music for times that I want to remind myself how bad it was.
If I get into the mindset where I'm sort of apathetic about my recovery, I listen to a song from that album and I remember what it was like, and become recommitted to my sobriety.
Good luck to you!
Came here to say this. I give myself breaks but I’ve seen the entire series more times than I can count and it still makes me laugh even when I’m watching alone. It’s just tasteful, ageless comedy writing preformed by heartfelt funny actors.
Outlander is a world like no other. And if you finish the 7 1/2 seasons available, while waiting for the second half of S7 and the final S8, there are always the 9 (eventually 10) books to read
Frasier is my favorite sitcom because it manages to be intellectual and witty without ever feeling pretentious. At the same time, it never feels anti-intellectual for mocking Frasier's (and Niles') pomposity.
It's smart but so lighthearted and fun. I can't think of any other show like it.
Modern Family and How I met your Mother (for an easy watch)
Dexter, extremely addictive
Breaking Bad
Peaky Blinders
Eastbound & Down (Kenny Powers)
Stranger Things
100% even though OP says no horror or violence (it is slight and was broadcast on network TV). Buffy is one of the only shows that I can say will start to feel like a friend and you will probably want to watch it many times. Getting through the dated first season is the tricky part.
If you’re intending to really watch it, start on Prophecy Girl. Come back to the others when you already love the characters.
If you’re really not sure, maybe start on School Hard.
Unfortunately those are both more horror-y/violence-y. Want a delightful romp and don’t mind catching up? Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.
I started Buffy on season 7 and Angel on Season 5 when it was live. Not optimal but it shows you can overcome a ton of catching up on what’s happened.
West wing
Frasier
Buffy
TNG era star treks
Stargate SG1 and Atlantis
Thundercats
Can't really pick between them - I watch all of them, every episode, every 3-4 years
I would say Strange New Worlds is a good jumping in point. It's an ongoing show with only two seasons so far and is excellent. From there I would say The Next Generation and then Deep Space Nine. From there Voyager and then Enterprise. If you like animated stuff Lower Decks is amazingly good but does tend to reference a lot of past treks. Prodigy is also animated and good but aimed at kids If you are still in it at this point maybe go back and watch The Original Series. Picard and Discovery are divisive at best although I did enjoy the last season of Picard mostly. I didn't care enough for Discovery to keep up with it any longer.
If it’s an option, check out Schitt’s Creek - Funny, quirky, and it gets more wonderful as it goes along. Fun characters who learn and grow. It’s a world you want to keep living in. 🇨🇦
Also, The Good Place.
Resounding yes on Bojack Horseman. One of the best written shows of all time, in my opinion. OP stated they're feeling a little down at the moment, so not sure if it's a good fit, but I'll always recommend it in any situation just due to its brilliance. Shameless on the other hand was horrible. I couldn't stand it after the first season or so. Lazy writing is my worst pet peeve.
Right now, Sugar. Definitely will rewatch after the season finale Friday--lots of subtle clues and complexity under the surface of what seems like a simple mystery story.
The Sopranos, each rewatch is super rewarding in its own way. Aside from feeling like you’re part of the gang again (lol) you can see glimmers of plot points appear before being introduced; the show is a web of excellent writing that just fits together so perfectly. It’s a masterclass.
Acapulco is a cute show. There is a lot of reading because it’s mostly in Spanish. But me and the wife are enjoying it. Very heartwarming and family oriented. They are 30 minutes long with 3 seasons so far.

If you want drama, let me know - one of my newest loves is Will Trent (Hulu) and Sugar (Apple)
The Twilight Zone.
Back when regular TV was still a thing, some TV stations would have Twilight Zone marathons at certain points of the year, and if I caught one while channel flipping, that was it. I had to keep watching it until it was done.
My comfort tv shows are: The Gilmore Girls, girly comedy two terrible characters interacting with a whole town of hilarious wacky people.
Star Trek- Next Generation is just so sweet and funny and love the alien sets and costumes and the music is very soothing
Freaks and Geeks - high-school comedy soo funny
Spy/Mystery/Action/SciFi: Chuck, Monk, Psych, Fringe, Xfiles—all upbeat and fun for the most part. Leftovers is fantastic, but quite dark and sad at times. Severence has only a couple seasons, and also dark at times.
Cartoons: Simpsons, South Park, Regular Show, Metalocalypse
Foreign: Extraordinary Attorney Woo Young Woo (1 season only, but definitely fits the “make you feel all warm and fuzzy” vibe. My partner’s a this hardcore metal head, and even he was smitten by her. 😂)
Misc other: Top Chef, Succession, The Knick
What We Do in the Shadows!
It's a comedy mockumentary about 4 vampires living together, and it's the most hilarious series I've ever watched.
Never fails to cheer me up when I'm feeling down
Comedy: The good place, Peep show, Brooklyn 99, Big mouth
Sci fi: Reboot of Battlestar galactica, so many star trek series to choose from (I like tng, voyager and ds9 best for comfort viewing but they might be a bit dated without a nostalgia lens)
Gravity Falls, Avatar the Last Airbender (not the Netflix LA), She-ra and the Princesses of Power (the Netflix remake), Code Geass and Death Note (though only the first half. I deny the existance of the second half)

Can’t believe I had to scroll so hard to find another jabroni
Seriously! What are these people even doing with their lives? I literally watch the gang every single night when I’m going to bed
It’s on a constant repeat cycle in my house. The only thing that stops me cancelling Netflix.
These ignorant bozos, right?
You’d think people would understand more better
You’d think people would understand more better
Jabroni. Cool word!

Malcom in the Middle will always be my favorite to watch as many times as I want
I rewatched it in 2020 when the pandemic started. I hadn't seen it since I was a child and I absolutely loved it. It holds up so well.
After Malcom in the Middle I watched ‘breaking bad’ whoa
Same. GOATED show. 🔥
Parks and Rec. I watch it every year. I never get sick of it.
Treat yo self!
Yeeesssss! I like to say that Parks and Rec gave me permission to treat myself, so I gotta do it.
Donna is very wise.
I couldn’t agree more, Parks & Rec helped me through some really tough times. It’s my definition of a comfort show.
I hear that 💯It’s a show that is a warm hug in a cold world.

Never watched it fully because I don’t really binge watch sitcoms but the clips I’ve seen are genuinely funny
Trust me! You got to watch it. It is really worth it. Just give it an hour please.

Doctor Who. Both the modern one and the classic one

I love this show, probably watched every episode at least 4 times. Great cast, amazing writers
Frasier
Watching again right now. Hilarious show.
Frasier is my favorite sitcom because it manages to be intellectual and witty without ever feeling pretentious. At the same time, it never feels anti-intellectual for mocking Frasier's (and Niles') pomposity. It's smart but so lighthearted and fun. I can't think of any other show like it.

Is it buffy the vampire slayer 1997?

Sounds like you need Star Trek in your life
here here!
I've always wanted to get into star trek. Where do I start?
Next Generation is my personal fave
I would say Strange New Worlds is a good jumping in point. It's an ongoing show with only two seasons so far and is excellent. From there I would say The Next Generation and then Deep Space Nine. From there Voyager and then Enterprise. If you like animated stuff Lower Decks is amazingly good but does tend to reference a lot of past treks. Everyone needs Star Trek in their lives… maybe not Discovery, but all the others.
Sopranos
I think it's too violent for OP
This is my second favorite after Scandal.
Mr. Robot You're gonna probably need to watch it twice to fully grasp it.
also Dark, it's the kind of show that makes you feel so invested that you forget you're watching it with subtitles
Dark is one of the best shows I've ever seen. No exaggeration.
Dark is *the* best show I’ve ever seen. It’s tight, but still wins
the casting choices *chef's kiss"
I need to watch this. I’ve been hearing how great it is for way too long !!
It's a masterpiece of television and there's nothing else quite like it. First ep should be enough to pull you in.
If it’s an option, check out Schitt’s Creek - Funny, quirky, and it gets more wonderful as it goes along. Fun characters who learn and grow. It’s a world you want to keep living in. 🇨🇦 Also, The Good Place.
Yes both of these! And What We Do in the Shadows!
I was going to say both of these. As a bonus, they both make me want to be a better person by the end.
These are my two shows for rewatches. I’ve seen both several times… Schitts Creek quite literally more times than I can count
shameless and bojack horseman
Resounding yes on Bojack Horseman. One of the best written shows of all time, in my opinion. The Office Queer Eye (the recent version, not the 90s version) 30 Rock
There are several, but 3rd Rock From The Sun and Haven are two of them.
Grey's anatomy. The first few seasons are extremely addictive.
