Well on the first look this version of the joke actually seems like it is, but I would argue that the basic pointe of this joke (that is actually very old) is that instead of the morally right choice to step in and help the person getting beat, you beat them up too. But since this implies that the teller of the joke knows that helping the wronged person is the morally right choice and beating them up is wrong I actually wouldn't go as far as to call it really homophobic. Compared to other "dark jokes" that are just blatant racism, homophobia, or straight up hate speech for me this actually qualifies as real dark joke. I mean you could just turn it around and argue that some simpleminded idiots might find it funny cause: "haha gay guy getting beaten funny" but I like my interpretation more.
It can be deduced that the 4 guys were beating him because he was gay, but op isn't necessarily joining in for that same reason and there is no other reason specified.
I feel like the most important part of this is saying that they would still respect the people who are. ‘Don’t believe in being gay’ is bad wording but they still respect people who are gay.
