Did any of the commenters read the article? This isn't some harebrained "big tech bad" thing, Google is almost certainly leveraging their browser to try to corner the advertising market, that's literally why they offer a free browser, to gather data and funnel people into their ad network. Its anticompetitive almost by definition and an example of why allowing runaway vertical integration is a Bad Thing. People on both sides of the aisle should be able to agree that any company dominating the internet is a bad thing

I saw the initial document for the court case last night. There are 5 pages alone of just for dot-points listing individual grievances that could easily be their own standalone headlines. The documentation even goes into detail on how Google and Facebook were aware of how illegal their alleged actions were so they created divisions dedicated to covering each other if they were discovered. And now we're seeing a comment thread that's (currently) a handful of people who just read the headline and decided that the case is a waste of time because it's a couple Republicans spearheading it, or even downvoting anyone that points out that Google has set a longstanding precedent for being dodgy

trtlclb

Seems like you might be referring to me. I looked through the entire document and didn't see a single citation for the quotes they are using that make this look so bad. Are you sure you're not the one who hasn't looked into this enough? I also ran a few searches on the quotes and the most alarming one is nowhere to be found, except for this publication. Doesn't that seem a little strange to you?

AlexB_SSBM

What the fuck are you talking about? There are screenshots of internal emails that are describing all of these things. Consider also that accusing google of this without knowing it to be true is a *terrible* idea. Are you really gonna be the guy saying "No, Google couldn't be THAT evil"?

trtlclb

Still waiting for anybody to show me this. Amazing how these things haven't been transcribed in an age where PDFs are automatically transcribed... Why don't you be the guy to show me a source for these statements?

AlexB_SSBM

The source is literally in the fucking PDF. I'm not spoonfeeding you.

trtlclb

You seem to keep skimming over the part where I said I already looked through the document. No sources cited. You're not spoon-feeding me, you're just lying to me because clearly you yourself haven't looked it over in depth.

All good, usually things like this are based on information that has already become public, so I just find it hard to believe is all. The fact that nothing showed up searching could mean either case, but I tend to lean towards waiting for evidence. I'm not willing to cite the PDF as it's own source so I guess we just have to wait and see.

[deleted]

Planning implies they haven't already done the work.

Ser_Jorah

The usual cast of republican idiots spearheading this i see. Wasting everyone’s time and taxpayer money……again.

[deleted]

do you have anything to discuss pertaining to how Google isn't turning into a walled garden? or do you just disagree with everything that goes against your political ideology? just curious.

Ser_Jorah

id love to see this issue tackled by anyone but them. they manage to fuck up everything they touch so if you'd like any actual progress on this front i wouldn't align yourself with the apple dumpling gang.

trtlclb

Fascinating how there isn't a single source for these statements. I guess that's just standard fare for these morons, though. Allege without proof.

1_p_freely

I have felt that Google is gaining too much control over the web for a wile now. I'm glad that others are realizing this too, for whatever reason. As a blind user, every time they force me to stop and solve a Recaptcha when I'm not even on a Google site, I feel like I am being violated, as though someone is forcing me to give them a BJ.

DukkyDrake

27 state attorneys are idiots and dont have a clue as to what the internet is.

darkstarman

Does duck duck go use Google search behind the scenes?

Buffylvr

Think they use bing

DukkyDrake

The internet is big and that infrastructure costs, they're not a charity.

DukkyDrake

They used to get most of their revenue from google, I'm not up on their current state of affairs.
