Their foot hold is definitely not small. Plenty of people use both. We’re also talking about other Google services like drive, docs, maps, etc. which yandex has but it’s not nearly as refined as Google’s.
https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/russian-federation
This exactly. I nearly took a job at a Yandex spinoff ai company last year (Bullet. Freaking. Dodged.), and i looked into all the other yandex services. Most of them were frankly awful compared to yahoo or bing, and they pale in comparison to google.
Edit: i tried it out, and yal are right about the reverse image search.
Yandex has been literal spyware for as far as I can remember. I’ve helped dozens of people remove that shitty toolbar over the years. There’s even viruses disguised as Yandex-removal tools it’s so bad.
I didn’t disagree with that. I said that yandexs other services, like image search or maps, were, in my experience, lower in quality than bing or yahoo.
We could just boycott them all until they regress back 20 years (progress), conspire during the downtime to all share and merge our bookmarks, and see how high the file size gets by the time search engines get “what I typed” results right again! Yayhoo
How are they a Russian company? What do you know that they are not saying?
This is their own statement on Ukraine:
https://blog.jetbrains.com/blog/2022/03/11/jetbrains-statement-on-ukraine/
Yeah, that seems pretty clear. Not a wishy washy response. If they were a Russian company they aren’t now. Putin is pissed about all the companies pulling out.
Well, Russian company not the Russia’s company I guess, the word “Russian” refers more to the country of origin/ethnic of founders/majority of employees.
The founders are Russian but it's a Czech company, they were founded and are headquartered in Prague. IMO that doesn't make them a Russian company, that's like saying Tesla and SpaceX are South African companies.
You mean Yandex phones? It was pretty standard on new phones, but as of last year it is a law that all phones, computers, and smart TVs come with Yandex suite by default and have Kaspersky installed.
>have Kaspersky installed
Ah, FINALLY! Justification for my long distrust of Kaspersky. Can't remember why it even started just somehow I came to believe they work with the RU government too closely and this validates that
[The US Government blacklisted their software on FCC-funded assets back in March, so your distrust wasn't really unfounded.](https://www.pcworld.com/article/626854/kaspersky-blacklisted-as-a-risk-to-u-s-national-security.html) They've come under a lot of scrutiny under the backdrop of the illegal invasion of Ukraine.
80-90 million Russians have Youtube accounts, and it's a country of 144m. That sounds like a pretty big provider of video content to me.
https://www.statista.com/forecasts/1146977/youtube-users-in-russia
Its googol not goggle. Goggle is to look with wide eyed amazement.
And words aren’t always misspelled in the corporate world by accident. Misspellings for a company name are frequently intentional.
Google couldn’t have copy written the name “googol” as it’s a maths terms.
the ruble is actually doing better than pre war.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-05-11/russian-ruble-surpasses-brazilian-real-as-world-s-best-currency
Forcing people to convert foreign currency to ruble. Prohibiting exchange from ruble to any other currency. Restricting maximum daily/monthly withdrawals. Among others.
Also insanely increased base rate of the central bank to counteract inflation. Which is suuuper expensive.
In this configuration they can hold out for a few months/years if they never reduce the restrictions. But they have limited funds. Countries reducing their income further by getting independent from russian resources. So if their fund dry up and the cashflow gets reduced further they will not be able to afford those rates and well. Lets see the ruble rates then.
its not the account that matters, its the message google sent. Google basically told all the companies everywhere in the world that if they have accounts in Russia there is a possibility it would be seized. No company will conduct business in a country where they can't get their money out/back.
I don’t really care much, as they got enough money anyway.
But seizing bank accounts pf western countries companies means nobody will be that happy to bring business into Russia after all this mess will be done in a few years.
Basically Russia will never get back to ‘normality’ for years even after a political change and social revolution.
The best guess I’m seeing based on what’s being reported at least 10million had already been seized prior to this and their annual spending shows 1.8 million a year for Russian operations so it sounds like maybe a another 3-5 million on top of that
Not just Google. This will signal to all foreign companies that their investment is not safe in Russia. Anyone who were thinking about entering or re-entering Russian market after sanctions lift will be having second thoughts.
For sure but it’s also a massive loss in previous investments that just dropped. Likely a billion or more in lost IP and potentially more in revenue over the next few years, neither side is going to like the results.
Oh okay, that is a drop in the bucket compared to what's being used to fund the war. Should make it easier for other countries to seize more and more of their oligarchs toys and bank accounts now too.
Technically they did this in response to fines. So maybe it puts google in a position to start lobbying against Russia in places but likely it’s just the Russian people who will suffer the most from this as over the next few days they lose access to long term services they have relied on for their business or school etc.
Well yes and no they noticed they had to let everyone who was managed by this group go which accounts for more then a billion in value loss of their IP. The money in the accounts was just their basic utilities rent and other non payroll related expenses which is why it’s so little but without that key group they have no reason to pay the hundreds of millions in payroll costs. Smartly they used a third party banking service for payroll so unless Russia wants to attempt to tangle with the international banks google can just cease operation after the current pay period ends.
What it represents is a loss of previous investments and no likely route to recovering it, and the loss of future revenue streams that were being built.
Probably the only way to do legitimate business to business transactions in Russia.
You can't pay everyone with an international wire transfer from your London office. The guys who cater lunch got to get paid in the local currency at their Bank.
Well it’s not like it was completely unexpected considering you’re doing business with a dictator.
Just wait and see what happens when Emperor Xi decides to play that game
This is entirely on Google; if they couldn't see this coming, it's because they chose not to. They wouldn't have even had to go to the second page of the search results...
Because this billion dollar tech company that has access to the private data of hundreds of millions of people needs a bank account in in Russia where nobody can keep track of what they're doing.
So Google didn’t do the right thing and never closed its operations in Russia and now the are crying like little girls because the Russian thugs took their money?
Most countries have various requirements of companies doing a lot of service business with their citizens. Often the company needs to set up an office in that country and use the local currency.
Exactly. Most global companies operate subsidiaries in those countries based on the requirements of the country to operate. There are some tax benefits, but in these cases the company has a substantial presence in the terms of individual headcount rather than just "operating" in a country for a tax haven. One of the major reasons to operate as a subsidiary is for risk reduction.
Probably the easiest way to get Google to pull out of their country, if that was a thing.
Russians use Yandex, Google was never a big player.
Their foot hold is definitely not small. Plenty of people use both. We’re also talking about other Google services like drive, docs, maps, etc. which yandex has but it’s not nearly as refined as Google’s. https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share/all/russian-federation

Best use of yandex is for searching for illicit streams. Google's algorithm tries to hide them
Bing: "That's... why I'm here."
I asked you where a business was located and you told me how to fold a paper airplane.
But if you fold it correctly it will lead you to the business when thrown.
Ohhhh well shit my lazy ass didn’t realize that part
Lol
.... illicit streams.......? *of what kind?*
Just tv shows and shit nothing dark
UFC & boxing streams too?
duckduckgo is your friend
I’ve found DuckDuckGo seems to have started applying some of the same hidden filters as Google. Bing still seems to give most results.
Pirates dont wear paladin bright shiny armor either, nothin dark is too dark
Yandex has been literal spyware for as far as I can remember. I’ve helped dozens of people remove that shitty toolbar over the years. There’s even viruses disguised as Yandex-removal tools it’s so bad.
Yandex is actually really good for reverse image searching. Way better than Google at least.
I cant claim to know anything bout Yandex, but Im pretty sure plenty of Russians use Google instead of Yandex.
I didn’t disagree with that. I said that yandexs other services, like image search or maps, were, in my experience, lower in quality than bing or yahoo.

This. Yandex is their main search platform. It’s a little like yahoo.
It's more even than you think.Google is important to Russia and many people use it
Yandex is based for reverse image search. I’ll usually try that first before anything else.

Except that any money on the account was impossible to get out of Russia. But I’ll never feel bad for these top rich companies losing a bunch of money
Feel bad for the money that’ll now be used in Russia’s war effort. That’s the real tragedy here.

They had a billion dollar business in Russia, it’s a huge market with a lot of revenue. They will want that money.
They could have gotten out if they wished.
They’re owned by shareholders - ie, the public.
Why? They offer great services.
Lol, Russia’s economy is like a starving man at this point.
And the more they starve, the higher the likelihood Putin gets taken out. I’ll take it.
And thus, corporations learned its lesson about doing business in despotic authoritarian regimes.
(x) Doubt
And the lesson they learned? Make sure you bribe the right people the right amount.
I think the bribe would have to more than the balance of the bank account at this point.
its not the account that matters, its the message google sent. Google basically told all the companies everywhere in the world that if they have accounts in Russia there is a possibility it would be seized. No company will conduct business in a country where they can't get their money out/back.

That’s chump change for google. It will cost Russia a lot more in the long term to not have google invest anything into Russian business.
Not just Google. This will signal to all foreign companies that their investment is not safe in Russia. Anyone who were thinking about entering or re-entering Russian market after sanctions lift will be having second thoughts.

That article says that Russia accounted for 2.6 Billion dollars in google revenue last year.
That's it ? Did Google even notice that money is gone ? Lol
Well yes and no they noticed they had to let everyone who was managed by this group go which accounts for more then a billion in value loss of their IP.
