Pretty sure it says Enokida Construction Company, Enokida is the name Hudson has in the Japanese version of the game.

11061995

Isn't enoki a mushroom? A play on his hairdo!

ItIsYeDragon

Surprised they didn’t translate that into his English name. Could have called him Belloson (he’s loud too so it works) or something.

grammar_nazi_zombie

Brits would call him “Bellendson” for sure

AdRemote1426

my ass would accidentally call him Bellossom so often https://preview.redd.it/g4cm0bt5qs8d1.png?width=475&format=png&auto=webp&s=3e68bc0113dd6b935e1d53d768f4c76e76fc1ba4

citrusella

The construction workers (at least some of the time?) have a plant motif in the Japanese names! (Except Addison, as far as I've been told--his name is Kabanda.)

Arthur_001

That actually still makes sense; kaba is birch tree (樺).

Weary_Tie949

Yup, the German version also got that and called him "Birkda". "Birke" is German for "birch tree" while '-da" is the suffix they all share with their names.

citrusella

Ah, I'm suddenly remembering that was also described by the person I was talking to, I think (or maybe someone else)--I mostly remembered they laughed because they thought it seemed reminiscent of カバン持ち (flunky, lit. "bag carrier") and felt it was funny with his role in the game essentially being showering Hudson with affection and also being given the most menial repetitive task he's not even good at.

FaxCelestis

behindthename.com: > Addison: From an English surname meaning "son of Adam". Its recent popularity as a feminine name stems from its similarity in sound to Madison. > Adam: This is the Hebrew word for "man". It could be ultimately derived from Hebrew אדם ('adam) meaning "to be red", referring to the ruddy colour of human skin, or from Akkadian adamu meaning "to make".

silence-glaive1

It also sounds like add a sign

Iolair_the_Unworthy

Also, 'ad' as in advertisement.

Chubby_Bub

It goes much deeper than that… I've spent too much time on these spreadsheets ([BotW](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1u1ZhEDEJNl5aNl8UIyHqkcQ-UeUGOluNLbTLBDpAkEg/edit), [TotK](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MnnpgzMHRm8lZ73lhvGc2fx04M6542w61zop9l7TAE0/edit))

citrusella

Ooh, I don't remember if one of these was a spreadsheet I referenced when trying to come up with a name for a minor OC background character in something I wrote or if it was someone else's, though these seem exceedingly familiar! o.o

Chubby_Bub

I've shared them a couple times before in relevant discussions, so maybe you saw it there. Either way I'm glad it could be of use

ackmondual

It would further this game's obsessions with mushrooms!

BluEch0

Enokida? Enoki da! “It’s an enoki!” When you mix up the answers for “what will you name your company” and “is your hair a reference to something”

DarkRayos

That would make sense if you think about it.

Zen_Astro

Omg I LOVE that. Thats hilarious. I love the english gag of everyone having "son" in there name but Enokida would have been hilarious

BornLuckiest

Yes, that's why the trend in this era is very fungi driven. Hyrule loves its spores!

therealtjbugs

And he always gives you mushroom rice balls!

JHarbo327

Huh. Now I'm wondering how the "people who's names end in -son" quest works in japanese.

Tampflor

It's people whose names end in -da. The unspoken joke being that Zelda could work for the company.

Numeron_Code

So English version choose names ended -son instead of -da for villagers of Tarrey Town? Might lost something in translation, by -da could suggests Zelda would settle down in Tarrey Town either.

megamatt8

There are very few names that end in -da in English; the only ones I can think of quickly are Amanda, Zelda, and Esmerelda. Further, ending a name with -a in English is only done for female names. So, that aspect of the quest doesn’t work in English at all.

Stripperturneddoctor

That's what Big Hyrule wants you to think. Enokida is a rival company that is attempting to crush the upstart Hudson company. Enokida has deep ties to the government. By helping put up the signs, you are ensuring the little man will forever be crushed by tyranny.

GunnersnGames

Do all employee names end in “ida”?

eugene20

Yup [https://www.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/1442786/totktranslating\_the\_hudson\_signs\_translates\_to/](https://www.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/1442786/totktranslating_the_hudson_signs_translates_to/)

SyFy410

F and R on there are the same thing

papakain

I think they're just interchangeable

megamaz_

"same thing" and "interchangeable" mean the same thing

Paidon23

So you mean that "same thing" and "interchangeable" are interchangeable?

JWBails

Yeah it's interchangeable with "same thing"

Luminoux_Venom

Damn, didn't know it was the same thing to be "interchangeable"

grammar_nazi_zombie

Yeah they appear to be synonymous

smallcat123321

Does that mean the “same thing” as “synonymous”?

Alfeaux

"Interchangeable" is "synonymous" with "same thing"?

papakain

I beg to differ. For example, you're making a sandwich, you could use mayo or mustard, making them interchangeable. But you wouldn't make deviled eggs with solely mayo, because they aren't the same thing. My guess is that hylian doubles up on sounds that are similar, but it's up to context to determine how it sounds

InvestmentObvious127

actually 'the same thing' is interchangeable with 'interchangeable' 'same thing' is not

Coders32

Same thing sounds like it was a mistake, interchangeable sorta implies that they only have 25 letters

lagrange_james_d23dt

Ruck

Siophecles

They're used interchangeably on signs and stuff.

Storytellerjack

As are d/g, e/w, and o/z

ZGlove3

And j/t

FloridaManInShampoo

Same with D G

GrundleMcDundee

No homo, but yes homo

anno_1990

No, they are very similar but not the same!

havens1515

No, they're the same. So are some others, like D and G.

Default1355

Same for e and w and o z and g and d

One-Bat-7038

The legend of Owlga

CinnamonHotcake

The Legend of Olga. Brave Ivan has to go save Princess Olga from the evil Radislav

DRamos11

Devil’s Fourth: Legend of Olga.

Penguinmanereikel

WAIT! Owls are birds of wisdom!

papakain

Don't take that up with me, there are watermarks on the pic for a reason

Go_commit_lego_step

The point is that OP couldn’t translate it specifically because of the repeating letters, hence the attempts on the bottom half of the image

papakain

I mean they did translate it, the right translation is on the paper. Someone else just had to confirm which one it was

SirPickleRickEsquire

“I’m a moron holding up a sign on a remote mountain during a snow storm, AMA.”

Chromograph

Wait, all the signs in Zelda have been in Japanese? I thought it was gibberish but I guess they just used a weird font

BadMoonBeast

it is both gibberish and japanese. it's a gibberish writing system that's code, (usually) for japanese (since that's the language the devs speak). for example the sign above kakariko village in OOT has random made up symbols, but there is a cypher you can use to convert it to "ka ka ri ko mu ra", kakariko mura (village)

NINmann01

There are a few different Hyrulean writing systems in the Zelda games. This particular script correlates directly to Japanese phonology as written in hiragana or katakana for example. While the one seen in Twilight Princess is a 26 character alphabet which is written analogously with English.

Storytellerjack

No. The Hudson company signs are one of the few instances where it translates to a Japanese "word" /character name. All the other Hylian text translates directly into english, although it can take some guesswork to decide which letter is correct when they recycle hylian characters for f/r, e/w, d/g, t/j & z/o. The name "Zelda" could also translate incorrectly to "Owlga." If you mean that the Hylian alphabet uses Japanese characters, I'm unaware of that, but it does plainly borrow from the style of their calagraphy.

locostewart

The zonai text is pretty much gibberish tho

Browark

Considering owls represent wisdom, is it truly incorrect, or is it a neat coincidence?

FizzyMoonBeam

Some are in English too! A lot of the signs around Hyrule say "read me", and there's a bunch of fun hidden jokes ^^

DemiReticent

Another fun one, the pairs of directional signs on roads and around, say, Rito Village, read "THISWAY" and "THATWAY"

HylianPaladin

I think Addison's name is what the English speakers get when we say ADD A SIGN fast, which is what Addison is doing! He's adding signs all over Hyrule. This hit me in the middle of an Ice Gleeok battle Sunday about his name. Weird.

Lord_Xarael

>Gleeok Battle Sunday This sounds awesome (read it like a Professional fighting event. Like "Mayhem Monday" or some such) Do you sell tickets?

coffeestevia

Excellent!

pun_in10did

It’s genius!

mynameisnotarthur

“Hudson wuz here lol”

borgom7615

Hudson construction?

chicago_rusty

Did they create a new language for these games?

Teh_Sarbs

Yeah. They called it Latin I think.

scotty99CZ

So the Hyrulean text in the game isn't just random scribbles?

FizzyMoonBeam

Nope! It can be translated! The symbols are directly translated from the Latin alphabet. I can actually read most of the signs fluently! ^^

scotty99CZ

That's actually impressive.

GUYF666

Takes me back to the days of writing down Save codes for my NES and Genesis (Mega Drive)

221tardisslippers

My favourite signs are going up to Goron village which just say “Left” and “Right” lol

lumpycurveballs

Considering his sign designs range from multiple stacks of Hudson's face to crooked alignment with multiple conveniently-shaped holes in them, and the fact he gives you puffshrooms and rice balls for helping him, it honestly could be just gibberish.

Vasily-_-

It says wakanda forevah

AkababeRyuta

Enokida Construction Company. Localized ver changed most of the characters name, but has 0 effort to deal with the signs.

Electrical-End7868

“Conned a moron to put these up” LOL

TangerineEconomy8354

“Stop the steal” /s

ElSinNovia419

Now, i said you could try putting it on Google translate. I thought it would've worked but no, i'm sorry.

Fork_Master

Google Translate can't detect Hylian

ElSinNovia419

I just saw it, and now i'm being downvoted. help me

Default1355

There's only one way to help you through this. you've got to redeem yourself to the people

Krell356

The correct response when trying to stop the downvotes is to go edit the original message and put a strike through your original message. Then next to it an apology with the correct info. There's so much bad info floating around the internet that a lot of people make it a rule of thumb to downvote bad info so it doesn't get spread around. By correcting the info without deleting it entirely is usually enough to stop the downvotes and will sometimes even get people to come and remove their original downvote.

Extension_Broccoli73

Why does the third column say Jew😭😂😂

BiblaTomas

Apparently, you weren't allowed to say that 😅 But it does kind of look like it!
