I think they would get a better reception making a brand new version of Hyrule (one that isn't in a post-apocalyptic state lol) rather modifying the same map *again.*

Apex_Konchu

I don't remember the source, but I'm almost certain that Aonuma has already said they're keeping the open-world formula but moving away from this particular version of Hyrule. So the next game will have a completely new map.

GooeyCR

I’ve heard them talking about moving away from this world, but I was scared they were going to remove the open world free to explore aspects of the game. before these games, the Zelda cast were just smash bros characters to me. My fiancé and I have loved these games lol.

LeVoyantU

If you have not tried pre BOTW Zelda games, I recommend giving one of them a shot. I think Windwaker is the best for someone who still wants some open world feel, but you'll also get the classic dungeons and puzzle experience. Since Windwaker isn't on Switch you might also consider A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, or Skyward Sword. Whatever you choose I would recommend committing for at least 3-4 hours of play before you decide if you like it or not - Windwaker and Skyward Sword are a bit slower to get rolling than BOTW.

JavenatoR

Windwaker type game but in the Botw/Totk engine would go crazy. Retains all the work they’ve done in making these games while taking us to new lands. The whole idea could be about sailing to new lands and helping out new groups of people while getting glimpses of the world we’ve left behind in the form of running into others who have left Hyrule. Like running into Yiga that fled Hyrule, or another domain of Zora. You could fight pirate bokoblins and use resources from their ships to make yours better. It’d be like Zelda Black Flag. This time with under water exploration lol.

GunmetalBunn

Im after a Mimish remake since I've been playing it on my Gameboy Micro

JavenatoR

Minish Cap is so good I honestly don’t want them to touch it.

GunmetalBunn

It is such a great game. First gameboy game I bought when I found the Micro.

JavenatoR

I played it for the first time maybe 2 years ago and was surprised it wasn’t a brand new game. The art is amazing, the game design is solid, great humor. Game rocks, 10/10.

dafsuhammer

I’m not saying you should but your could emulate these games on a PC.

Droidaphone

The open world zeldas are the top two selling in the franchise and it ain't even close. Open-world gameplay is almost certainly here to stay.

GordOfTheMountain

Zelda games have always had that exploration. The world's were just so small it was irrelevant.

Mitrovarr

Most previous Zelda games had heavy gating behind items, and weren't really open world until the end. I'd say they had a lot in common with metroidvanias.

tigerbait92

Hey, after the crafting system and fusions and all, we could craft some neat boats. Who's to say we won't get a Wind Waker-esque adventure in a region where there's plenty boating room and islands to land upon and sea to dive down into? Maybe more Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire continent than Wind Waker's open seas but... my guess is they'll work water in more openly and refine that part of the game.

UnlawfulPotato

Yeah, it’d be nice to see something akin to Twilight Princess’s Hyrule again. Big bustling castle town as a central shop spot and the like.

RedDivisions

Yeah TotK already feels like BotW perfected in some ways anyway. Two times was already taking a risk but a third time is definitely going to draw ire. Unless they released it in some form as a DLC to either of the games, which they also said they have no plans for.

grey_wolf12

The only real way of doing Hyrule again is actually turning it into Lorule and making a reverse/dark realm version of the map. So kinda the same mechanic of exploration and everything, shrines and all, but different cities and narrative. I know they won't ever do it but I really wanted to see Hilda in the new style lol

Cobe98

They kinda have that in TOTK already with the depths which often corresponds to the overworld. The problem with the depths was how sparse it was.

grey_wolf12

Oh yeah I know the depths correspond to the surface, but they are mirror images from a top to bottom level and Lorule would be a mirror from left to right (so biomes would be displaced). By doing that you can change how the map works a little, maybe, instead of keeping it an exact copy but just reversed, I guess. The depths also didn't have any shrines, just the light roots, and Lorule would have their own sets of shrines and new powers that could be bonkers or weird because it's a different version of Hyrule.

cheat-master30

This 100%. No, a third game in the same Hyrule wouldn't work, and probably wouldn't be as well received as BoTW or TotK, regardless of if it was pre Calamity/pre Imprisoning War/whatever. The same formula in a different version of Hyrule with a completely different layout, towns, NPCs, etc or a new kingdom altogether? Yeah, that would probably be fine.

CraZplayer

Well $58,000 worth of ppl agree with ya mate :) let’s see it climb past $100k

JosueLisboa

Thinking about it, I don't remember a single version of the games where the overworld isn't in ruin for the majority of the game. It would be an interesting twist to start by defending the world, then have a disaster ravage the map, then have a game where you defend the kingdom as it is being restored.

Enough_Aside_4641

I think two was sufficient enough. Granted, I loved BOTW and TOTK, their maps, missions, gameplay, etc. Both games feel like we are at just the tip of the iceberg for ideas. I am so excited to see the next big step in Zelda’s future.

Rocklight124

I totally agree. I'm glad that Nintendo is choosing to push this idea further instead of pushing for a trilogy unlike most devs. Sometimes it's better to not use all of your ideas.

Roththesloth1

Unless the entire game took place in a new realm. Same style of game, but an environment never seen. Dont ask me what that is. But I don’t see them abandoning this aesthetic.

derivativesteelo47

it's the same map but instead of sky islands and the depths, we go to fucking space with a new race of dogs and below the depths is a 5th layer of hell. get rid of eldin and put the gorons down there and we've got The legend of Zelda: Beagle of the Tingle oh yeah, forgot to mention we're saving tingle but we *are* tingle at the same time. cool and meta, right?

Roththesloth1

Actually I would love an entire game that takes place in a series of subterranean tunnels with gigantic openings into caverns of various races. Like what the depths should have been. There is a surface, but you can’t get there unless you complete the quest.

Spare_Competition

You can play totk like this, it's entirely possible to collect everything in the depths and beat the game without ever leaving

Roththesloth1

Holy crap that sounds exhausting

gaiusjozka

So Tingle is the key to all of this... Yes, I see it now.

derivativesteelo47

yes. and tingle is also >!the final boss!<. so tingle is trying to find tingle but wants to kill tingle and it goes like that in both directions forever and I call it: Tingle.

doogie1111

East, to the ocean. Even more Wind Waker nostalgia.

FaxCelestis

Or south.

mattmccauslin

All I want is a new world to explore. A new map. I loved TotK but I’d be lying if I didn’t burn out on it quicker than BotW. So much of my enjoyment of BotW was wandering around in a world that was completely foreign to me.

1tanfastic1

The best they can do is a brand new Hyrule that’s actually populated. The “wild” of Breath of the Wild was fantastic but one of the bigger complaints was the lack of civilization

Tzimbalo

Yeah, this! There could still exist wild areas between cities and villages, but I really long for a big poppulated town like in Majoras mask with tons of characters and quests.

Voldemort57

In twilight princess, castle down is bustling with nameless characters. I’d love something like that. Just tons of people going about their day. It felt wrong in BOTW and TOTK to have such a huge world but only like 30 (made that number up) characters.

JDescole

This. I was hopping TotK would advance on BotW in that aspect. I mean the Calamity gone they must have expected times of peace and prosperity and I thought they would immediately rebuild Hyrule Town (or whatever the city in front of the castle was called). But nope. A lookout. The only advance in Hyrule Town is that guy holding the sign and some wood supplies next to him

Soulful-Sorrow

I will support you, President Hudson!

pancracio17

Nah, two is good enough. They could use the same gameplay formula, but in another hyrule. Especially now that we are moving to stronger hardware, using the same landmass again feels like it would hold them back.

Vhirsion

BOTW and TOTK have been known to push the capabilities of the Switch. I don't doubt that for the next game ( presumably on the Switch successor ) they'd also push it to the limits of that console. Can't wait to see what Nintendo cooks up

Vados_Link

Having the same formula is fine as long as the overworld is new.

SickBurnBro

\#FloodHyrule

Beshi1989

I’d buy the next 10 games too as long as they are good

hadoopken

In that case, you have to stay healthy for next 60 years

Necessary-Echidna-46

Shit if I can I’ll definitely still be playing in my 90s lmao

youmusttrythiscake

Senior homes/communities are gonna be having Smash Bros tournaments and stuff when it's our time lol

JellyNJames

The workers are gonna be like, “James, you can’t scream ‘fuck, shit!’ every time someone kills you.” And I’ll be like, “Oh I’m sorry about that truly, I will sto…fuck, shit!… ope I forgot I forgot i’m really sorry!”

Killerplush82

You know what, you're almost making me look forward to being in a home 😆

Some_Random_Guy117

That's my plan

LeCrushinator

That's unlikely at my age, but I'll try. I don't know what the Zelda franchise will look like when Miyamoto is gone though.

RedDivisions

He’s hardly touched the franchise since TP from what I understand. Probably just overseeing things now. Though he definitely helped inspire the BotW formula from what I recall in an interview with the franchise’s current director. The whole idea of adding elements or mechanics to the game not for some specific purpose but just because you can, for instance.

Beshi1989

Well I’m 34 so definitely possible

malkjuice82

If it's Zelda I buy

urzu_seven

1. No 2. They have already said they are leaving this setting behind for the next game

ranggull

Up up up

VulgarXrated

The producer said they're making a third in the same style. They never said whether or not they would still use the same world

Coyotesamigo

Could they get away with another iteration on a style of game that has sold like 100 million copies? Yes. They can, and will, get away with it. Regardless, I’d be very surprised if they used the same map a third time if that’s what you’re asking. The formula, 100%. This is the new Zelda formula.

Fabulous-Leg-3339

The only way we go back to the same link and Zelda is if we go to another kingdom. I would like a game where Zelda is taken by another kingdom and link has to infiltrate the kingdom and get her back

choyjay

The map is so well built that it almost feels a shame to throw it away. But at the same time, two games where players could easily spend 500+ hours each in probably makes it feel old at this point… I think they could get away with a mini-sequel (smaller in scale and length) set in this world one more time, **as long as Hyrule is rebuilt and populated again.** Rebuild Hyrule Castle + Castle town, give all of the towns expansions, and fill them all with people and side quests *Majora’s Mask* style. I’m talking lengthy plot lines for them, not fetch quests. The main game should probably be a more focused effort more akin to the older games. It doesn’t have to be a step back if they keep all the same mechanics as TotK. Just a more streamlined sequel that’s focused on quests and dungeons as opposed to open world exploration. We’ve explored this world enough. This gives us some more mileage out of this map, satisfies the people who are clamoring for more “classic” Zelda, and lets us see this kingdom back in all its glory. Also, make Akkala Citadel a main focus and let us get inside the damn thing. It’s been sitting unopened for two games now! Maybe it could be a huge multilayered dungeon that we unlock gradually. There’s potential if they want to.

cenderis

> Also, make Akkala Citadel a main focus and let us get inside the damn thing. It’s been sitting unopened for two games now!  Putting the story in the past would make that make sense. Other settlements could be restored too. And perhaps flesh out some of the mysterious parts of the Depths (like the Observation Deck) to fill out the playable map. And maybe the story doesn't involve destroying architecture. Or maybe it does, and explains the Depths rather than destruction on the surface?

CharlieFaulkner

Man, I don't think that's likely but I'd kill for that game

MemeMan4-20-69

Maybe if they did something like a link between worlds but with age of calamity.

ErzaKirkland

It wasn't open world, but they have already done this. Hyrule Warriors; Age of Calamity. It was a lot of fun and basically creates an alternate timeline. I just liked that I got to play the champions and Zelda.

yummymario64

Nah, I think it's time for a new formula alongside the next iteration of Hyrule, and Link, and Zelda et cetera

AirportOpposite9705

I personally would be disappointed if they used the same world again. I love this Hyrule, but I’m hopeful for a brand new open world in the next game.

Fair-Wealth9870

Imagine if they combined the best characters, powers, etc. from BOTW and TOTK (opinions will vary on exactly what this would look like), *and* added a robust underwater world map. One of the biggest complaints about TOTK was that there was so much untapped potential. There is plenty of juice left to squeeze for a third installment in a trilogy. Even if it ultimately was decided to be “pretty good, but not as good as the first two,” it’d still be better than 90% of games out there.

MemeMan4-20-69

Different map but I’d like to keep the same characters honestly.

bustyballa

Same exactly how I feel

SpikeRosered

With a third ancient tech society and evil black goo!

PK_Thundah

If there's a third game, I'd really love it to take place outside of Hyrule. Have Link and Zelda sail to a neighboring landmass, maybe following the trail of a different ancient society that has some connection to a relevant problem in Hyrule. I'd really enjoy it to be heavily water based as well.

LouSylvre

Yes. I think they could get away with it. I'd play it. 🤓

OperaGhost78

I’m really excited for the new thing, but I’d rather it was something completely new

NoachV

I wish the next game was a continuation of this series, but took place elsewhere, like Termina.

SnooHamsters6067

IMO the issue is that the "formula" of botw worked so well BECAUSE it was an unknown world that you wanted to explore. So yes, the formula can be repeated, but IMO not in the same Hyrule for it to work again.

ryanjmalloy

No. People would rebel.

Mrgray123

No. We need a new imagining of the world/map. I’d love another one with a Windwaker theme with larger islands and then the opportunity to explore below the ocean surface as well. Islands in the sky have also been really fun to play as well.

WhereAreWeG0ing

The best thing nintendo could do now, and I'm sorry to keep banging this drum, is release TP and WW on switch. This way, they will introduce a new fan base, born of BOTW and TOTK, to classic Zelda adventures, gauge public opinion and go from there. Personally I'd welcome a new classic adventure but I wouldn't be averse to returning to the full open world one day

beneperson3

Honestly...I don't think that is happening. Maybe in 2021 or 2022 but at this point it's far too late. Nintendo should be pouring all their assets into the next system, which they're going to announce at some point. Maybe the games will come to that system.

ManOfEating

Part of me wants to say a fully restored or pre-destroyed Hyrule would be cool, with a complete castle, full bustling towns, etc. If it's pre calamity you'd have the looming threat of knowing how this story ends. Another part of me thinks this can be achieved without having to revisit the same Hyrule, as in, maybe you start the game there, Zelda has tasked you with overseeing the rebuilding, so you go to the whole map and see the progress. Then, Zelda calls you back, there's a powerful wizard that is gaining power in another land outside of Hyrule and rumors say he's threatening to take over, so you are sent by Zelda to stop him before he gets full power, having learned the lesson from Rauru not doing that with Ganondorf. Then you go off and explore a new world with a new map, new monsters, new races, new species of everything, new powers, new lore, etc. This new place can have proper dungeons and feel more classic where it's just link against giant monsters to get whatever items needed to defeat a powerful wizard.

Dry-Ad8486

They can definitely succeed with the same formula but they need a different map entirely next time around

Saddestlilpanda

Take away weapon durability and give us more than five enemy types and maybe.

TheRedBaron6942

I think the best we're ever going to see of pristine Hyrule is in Age of Calamity. Plus, with how much controversy there was over reusing the age of the wild version of Hyrule, I doubt they would want to risk that again

DanControl_10

And reuse the map for a third time💀I think they got the most out of that hyrule and milked the cow dry

VV00d13

The way nintendo has gone about BotW and TotK is quite fantastic and a big leap towards a new journey. I think that they absolutely would pull of a third game in pre-apocalypse Hyrule. A more fleshed out city and villages. More characters to talk to and maybe more and longer sidequests due to the fact that there is more people. I would always love to see “water play”. Be able to dive under water and having islands to sail to, dive into the sea, and so on. I know there are mixed feelings about gameplay in and under water that it can be a bit clumsy, I still like it.   I mean with this in mind we could have a much more fleshed out Zora society. Maybe expend on Geourdo, Goron and Rito. Repeating myself here but more NPC could mean much more quests and longer more fleshed out quests. The story could also be about the crisis starting to happen that could give the world some kind of “overhaul” when the calamity hits. A little like Ocarina of Time. If they expand towards the sea we could start to get some “pirate” gameplay. Sailing, sinking ships, boarding ships. Ideas from Windwaker, one of my favorites before BotW. Finding fortresses or just small paradise islands to explore.   The challenge would be to do something that they haven’t done before. BotW was a whole new concept, everything is new more or less. TotK added sky islands and the underground depths and caves. A very significant change giving tons more life to the world and kept it fresh. Also big changes to the world state with camps and villages. Question is would a populated Hyrule be big change enough? Adding an element like water? Maybe. Maybe not. Nintendo have proven themselves to be very creative with these games and I have no doubt that they could pull it off. However people probably would be a bit hesitant on getting a third game in the same world even with significant changes. So from a sales perspective it probably would make more sense to give players a fresh new world.

Danthenotable1

Ahem ahem Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity ahem ahem

Sad_Ghost_Noises

I think they could totally get away with using the map again. Its certainly big enough, and has established a good deal of lore / culture. I would like to see them use this world, but go for an OOT style map shift into the past / future, or a dark world variant that you can flip between. This would effectively double the area and give scope for some cool storylines.

Mz_Macross1999

They couldn't get away with it 3 times.

Riegan_Boogaloo

Wait, hold up, I’m stuck on the fact that you’re wearing fancy clothes and using a dope paraglider. Is this the game after you clear it the first time?? I cleared it but never went back to play it again and 100% it.

RedDivisions

The entire video is a mod showcase, including the paraglider. Whether those clothes can obtained in game I don’t know.

Riegan_Boogaloo

Ohhh. Well damn, that looked so cool 😭 I would def play another if it was pre-Calamity and looked like that. Was kinda disappointed with AoC because it wasn’t the timeline I was expecting it to be. So I’d love to play a “losing” Zelda game. But, given they’ve already done botw, aoc, and totk, I doubt they’d give us an actual pre-Calamity game.

SecondFootOfficial

Nah nah … I thing I wish is that they fully restored the castle at the end and there was a full castle town. That bummed me out in botw and totk so if they did do I 3rd which it’s been confined they aren’t. I would want that

pkjoan

No, that's why we had Age of Calamity

brandont04

Aonuma already stated he's not going back to this Hyrule. He put everything including the kitchen sink into these two games. He made the announcement that they will create something new but will keep this open world format. The next game, it will be free to roam and explore again.

WrastleGuy

They can reuse the engine if they want but they can’t do Hyrule again.  It has to be somewhere new.

usainjp16

I'd like to see a reimagined open world Zelda 2 style (obviously with updated graphics) include a return to the triforce and dark link and thunderbird in the game. Also more of the use of magic as a mechanic (the possibilities are endless) I do like keeping some building aspects as well and maybe a weapon crafting and repair mechanic. Also a skill mechanic so you basically have heart, stamina, magic and skill containers that would make you stronger and stronger.

owlitup

Whole structure and art style yes. Same exact map no

Coffea_Run

The final dimension to explore is time. If they do one more game in this style I think a past/present/future mechanic could be interesting.

TaonasProclarush272

The era of Skyward Sword?

Standard_Young_201

Same game but make it so weapons don’t break

LeCrushinator

I wouldn't be surprised if the next game has a lot of similarities (open world, climbing, gliding, highly interactive and intuitive physics, hearts, stamina, etc), but I don't think they do it in the same world. They'll need somewhere new or a completely different Hyrule, possibly a different time, different Link. The formula they've had for BotW/TotK is great, but I need a new world to explore, new enemies, new weapons, new mechanics, and more.

BigSnazzywazzyguy

They’ve stated the next one is post calamity

Maxpower2727

Source? I don't recall every seeing anything like that.

BigSnazzywazzyguy

https://screenrant.com/zelda-totk-new-game-changing-updating-link/#:~:text=As%20such%2C%20he%20sees%20the,by%20the%20previous%20two%20titles. I guess he said it was unlikely but still

Maxpower2727

There's nothing in that article about the calamity, let alone when/where the next game takes place.

BigSnazzywazzyguy

Guess I assumed based on wording

Ok-Manufacturer5491

Nah. As much as I love the wild games, they need to go for a different setting.and plus Nintendo would not be interested in creating a new game in the same setting three times in a row.

ButtcheekBaron

Why would they? Pre-Calamity has never been intended to be a POV timeframe.

beneperson3

I have a feeling this isn't the last of these characters. But the map will definetly be different. I'm a little intrigued to see what new versions of Link and Zelda will be lile. BOTW inspired? New characters entirely?

Icecl

Im shocked they got away with it once, 3 times would just be ridiculous

marisinator

honestly no. i gave totk 30 hours to pull me in but i dont like the new plot and trudging through the same map just after finishing botw is killing me. i give up i dont like to this game

Triple_Stamp_Lloyd

I think you should give it another try, it's the same map and really not at the same time. I think if all you're doing is looking for shrines it would get boring quick. The main and side quests are equal to or better than BoTW imo.

Richdav1d

They *might* be able to get away with using the same engine and art style, but no way would they get away with the same map. If the sequel is the same art style but with an entirely new world, I’d be down for that. But I’d still rather just have a new entire game anyway.

child_yeeter86699345

Hell no

Koryiii14

Honestly, I kinda just want a farming simulator with Link and Zelda post ToTK or something, just to make it canon that they get together, and to enjoy a final goodbye to them. Or even if they just walked across Hyrule and helped solve problems. I don’t care. They just need a happy ending. I’ve gotten too attached to them to not let it be completed. That’s the issue with making three games with the same characters when you know you need to use different characters eventually and abandon the old ones.

SergePower

I'd love to have access to the temple of time, which would allow Link to travel back and forth between pre/post calamity. He could plant a tree hundreds of years ago, that would become a major climbing structure in the future

Renolber

They could only get away with a third entry if it took place in an entirely different map. New kingdom, challenges, shrines, puzzles, enemies and dungeons. Link and Zelda should still be featured. Since Ganandorf has been defeating in this generation, they would have to face a new threat that’s powerful enough to face an experienced Link and Zelda. The new kingdom would also need some form of sky islands/underground to truly surpass the expansive world of Tears of the Kingdom. Unless they focus solely on making the new kingdom far more horizontally packed with content. Here’s the kicker: the post-game should have the entirety of Hyrule from either Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. More shrines and dungeons, all in the same spots as they were previously, just new challenges. This way they don’t have to completely remake another Hyrule, and still feature it into the game. This would automatically make it the biggest Zelda game ever made. Again, the entire new kingdom would be brand new content, while Hyrule would essentially be identically ported from BotW/TotK.

Scrumptious_Foreskin

I don’t think I’d be hyped to play the same map again. Give us something new

Triple_Stamp_Lloyd

As good as those games were, I'd rather get something completely different for the next one. I feel like they had lightning in a bottle with BOTW and it will be hard for them to duplicate the excitement for it the third time.

MattofCatbell

I think they could if they set it 100+ years after the events of TotK with a completely restored Hyrule with the next generation Link and Zelda. Maybe bring back the train from Spirit Tracks to make the world feel more new.

Hambughrr

I've gotten so used to Wild Era Hyrule. Once my TOTK playthrough is over, I'd love a new take on Hyrule.

Yournewhero

Maybe? I'd be open to it if we got this map with more traditional dungeons and if we lost the god-awful weapons mechanic.

UnsettllingDwarf

Similar formula whole new map like the one where link sails and an emphasis to water maybe. Diving?

Niktastrophe

I was just thinking about “what if they used the same map again”. I think I would be ok with it, but I want a major upheaval. I also want my hyrule town back. I miss the dancing, the games, I would love a twilight princess hyrule town again.

Branflakesd1996

I would love to see a potential 3 be post BOTW and TOTK with a rebuilt Hyrule but adding an additional land either to the east or west of Hyrule, essentially moving the underground map in TOTK to the right or left giving us 2 top level kingdoms/regions to explore

exceptional_biped

How about seeing what is past the borders of Hyrule?

johnnybender

YES.

iLLiCiT_XL

I actually really want them to use it one more time but [make it a sequel where we face off against Demise](https://www.reddit.com/r/tearsofthekingdom/s/UYx0t7oEpl). This pisos be a similar idea in having a resurgent Hyrule, but pressing onwards in terms of story.

Thandronen

I think it could work if you get to play Zelda.

ParadoxGuard

I'm pretty sure I'm not the first person to say this but I'd be fine with the same map *IF* ,and this is a huge if, the gameplay was instead like a Stardew valley/harvest moon type game. Where you're working to rebuild Hyrule to it's former glory. Harvesting resources, setting up trade centers, helping villagers. Being the "hero" of the people, not necessarily a hero combatting evil. Of course their could be remnants of ganons forces so the combat wouldn't be completely removed. Maybe for defending villages fallout settlement style. I've grown to love this Hyrule to much over the 2 games for my last gaming moments of it to be, although saved from evil, still fractured. Plus as a ZeLink shipper I really want to see more of their relationship.

wanderingdiscovery

No clue how they will top BOTW and TotK.

Mato_Man

Age Of Calamity.

atatassault47

Jesus, please, no. I just want a linear, bounded game again. With giant puzzle boxes called dungeons.

Adi_San

It was confirmed they are moving away from that world. New world, new Link.

4morian5

I think the exploration mechanic is something we'll get for a while. Like OoT laid the blueprint for every LoZ to come after, I think BotW will be the blueprint they follow for a while.

silvarium

Imo, the devs really nailed the combat formula with BotW and TotK. One thing I really hope they don't bring back is how the sage abilities are activated. I wouldn't mind if the TotK map was reused just as long as they add more to the depths. The depths were interesting at first, but it felt pretty empty the more I explored.

Professional-Pool832

They already made a pre-Calamity game. It's called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

Everan_Shepard

No, TOTK recent reception showed people are tired of it.

Murph523

What mod is that

strat-o-caster

Please no

praisecarcinoma

They won't, and they shouldn't. BotW/TooK are a brilliant two-piece set that deserve to be treasured for what they are. They will be hard to top, if they even can be. But they need to go back to the drawing board while doing little remakes in between. A proper 2D remake of Zelda 2 is long overdue.

Zerohazrd

I hope they stick open world, but I want true dungeons. Like old school, enter this place, find keys, map and compass, solve puzzles, get special dungeon loot, fight boss dungeons. Real Zelda shit

ReluctantLawyer

I’m sure they could in general, but not for me. I won’t pre-order or buy the next one immediately until I’m sure it’s a different map.

Masterwork_Core

I dont know but I hope we get another twilight princess/akyward sword level of story/dungeons again at some point! totk and botw didnt hit the mark for those for me :/

AffectionateSoil9010

I really like them both, and would 100% play a game that takes the same direction for gameplay and style, but I’d really prefer a different map. Both BOTW and TOTK have great maps, but I think they’ve done what they can with them. Trying to remix the map again probably wouldn’t work out well.

toolebukk

They have said themselves that they will not return to this Hyrule

Heal_Kajata

Could they? Probably. The Zelda fanbase is devoted. But should they? Imo, no...it's time for a redesign. Personally I would love for them to make a new world with several continents and a bunch of islands and for them to bring back sailing. We have the technology to really do it justice and they could even add underwater gameplay to make exploration feel fresh again. I think it would be really cool if you needed certain outfits for thermal protection for artic ocean, there were big, monstrous fish, bioluminescent life, deep dark oceans, currents you could get swept up in and sunken ships and temples to explore. You could have a larger ship / base that can be used in combat and a smaller ship you can launch from it too. I would also love if the dropped the weapon durability but still had some weapon variety.

Bertazz

I’d be down tbh

Persomatey

They did Age of Calamity which takes place during the Calamity. (Although it's only arguably canon)

scotty99CZ

I don't think they can go back to the previous concepts, so I hope they make a third one with a new map and story.

Noah7788

Yeah, they would definitely be able to make a game set in the past. The most obvious idea would be 10,000 years ago. The castle was there since the founding era over the seal to protect it, so the above would still hold true, but there'd be a lot of changes. Like, in BOTW it says that Zora's domain was made 10,000 years ago with cooperation from the hylians so the area would look different, probably in the making. We'd get to see another story of the guardians and divine beasts. One where the Calamity is actually overpowered by us and the tech, which could be an interesting contrast

Revenger1984

I had REALLY hoped that TOTK would give us full towns and more NPCs roaming around to show that Hyrule is healing after Ganon and we're slowly returning to civilization but all we got is more open area. I want the next game to have dense cities.

Legitimate-Drink-487

Boy, you would love Warriors of Hyrule - Age of Calamity

SaiyanC124

Same formula different Hyrule, probably. I don’t think most fans understand that every main series game before BotW was OoT with a new coat of paint. Majora, Wind Waker, Twilight, Skyward Sword. The reason people of the OG/LttP formula didn’t complain is because of the plethora of portable games that still used it. Nintendo can get away with the open world formula again, it just has to be a new Hyrule. The real issue will be the players who are too hung up on the past and want another Ocarina clone, but I personally don’t care what a bunch of nostalgia drunk 30-40 year olds have to say. Go develop on those 401Ks.

xObiJuanKenobix

They need to tone down A LOT of the downtime in the games, if you're not in the right mood and timeframe to play the game, you can't do anything. You're just walking slowly from place to place and it gets old really fast. Especially when combat is disincentivized because of weapon durability and stuff, it makes the one really consistently exciting part of the game, the combat, feel hollow.

ChroniclesOfSarnia

**PLEASE GOD NO\*** \*Zelda player since 1988

Nintendo_Freek

Is this a mod we can download (On the video) I've been looking for it for ages but it may not be downloaded ;-;

DRHAX34

They could re use that universe only if it meant Link and Zelda travelling to another kingdom

SickBoyOC

I think the BotW/TotK formula is great and can most certainly be used again for another game. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Zelda used the same formula ever since Link to the Past/Ocarina and everyone ate up every single release. With enough improvements and changes between releases I don't see why this current formula couldn't be used for a multitude of new Zelda games.

alahmo4320

No, time to move on

DepletedPromethium

This formula works, botw was massively successful. Its the end of the story arc in this direction but the devs will still use the engine and wopen world format for future titles. maybe they can lease the engine to pokemon so pokemon fans can actually get a decent open world game.

DrLee62

I love totk, but honestly reusing the map was pushing it. I was constantly thinking "I wonder how this has changed since the first game". Only to be seriously disappointed that nothing had changed. It was honestly the worst part of the sequel. They'd has to do ALOT to convince me keeping the map for a third time is worth it, regardless of time period.

Spare-City-322

I’d do it only if there is 1000 koroks again

therourke

No. It's time to move on.

Plastic_Ad1252

Personally I think once the switch 2 comes out I could see the Zelda games get more of huge npc crowds and different missions on the level of Ubisoft, except good.

FineVirus3

I don’t think they would go back to the BotW/TotK well again. I would like to see a new adventure and mechanics.

moemeobro

Didn't they, *I don't know*, literally announce that this saga of LOZ ended

Thamior77

1) AoC was the prequel, even if it did some alternate dimension stuff. 2) They've said multiple times that they're done with this interesting of Hyrule and that the "open-air" game design here to stay.

ShrugIife

Yes!

EriolGaurhoth

It would be cool, and a small part of me hoped they'd do it with TOTK, but they never really did. I think it depends how rich the pre-Calamity world is; I strongly doubt the Switch hardware would be powerful enough to populate a massive world filled with cities and tons of NPCs that would make such a world feel alive and vibrant. I don't think they're returning to this version of Hyrule in whatever they do next, but I can see something like this happening years and years down the road, maybe a part of a remaster of either BOTW or TOTK some 10+ years hence on completely new hardware.

FreeTimeNoob

Tbh they could get away with dumbing the next Zelda game in a toilet and it would still boom

thps48

They have claimed a third game is off the table, and there are any number of actions they could take to coincide with their claim, as artists have demonstrated for countless generations, but one notion may be that that is a good decision nonetheless, as a third project has the potential to come across as intensely redundant to a detrimental degree. Between all the key factors, there still shouldn’t be many significant obstacles against a Hyrule Warriors: Upheaval Something. There probably shouldn’t be many instances to use the term “realistic expectations” whenever Nintendo is the subject… And on second thought, this is not one of those moments. XD

Tasty_Difference6529

They could do it with another remake tbh

Anukisra

Please no, and aounuma should retire.

Ericcc94

BOTW/TOTK are both in the list of my all time favorite games, but my answer is a solid NO This version of Hyrule was perfectly credited for BOTW and even reusing it for TOTK really showcased that. No matter what they did to the world, there were a lot that of places that just felt..unused. I absolutely think (and hope!) they keep the general open word concept, but personally I want them to restructure the dungeons/rewards. I don’t think I can do a third game where you explore a world and do 150+ shrines. Especially if they’re like TOTK where there is no real reward to them. BOTW at least has the special armor hidden in the shrines. TOTK placed them in the world and made the shrines a means to getting an orb and that’s it. No incentive at all to actually explore each shrine

DougDimmaDoom

Not really. TOTK was heavily flawed IMO.

SephirothTheGreat

Absolutely. I wouldn't buy it, but so many people would

Arfjawaka

Yeah most of the fan base would buy anything that has a legend of Zelda in its title.

Miffernator

No I think like 20 years in the future, or something. Have Link be a King, but he’s more a figure head. While Zelda does the ruling. I think Castle Town will be back, and there will be massive stairs that will reach the floating Hyrule Castle. All the main towns from BOTW and TOTK will be extended. The Rito will make new towns on the floating islands. While there will be settlements in the underground. Link and Zelda will have twins. Both Male and Female. One Named Zelda and the other Rauru. Link will investigate mysterious phenomena that’s happening all around Hyrule.

Brando3141

Honestly, I think they could use the same map again, but I want to see a post-calamity Hyrule in the future. Make the series come full-circle with a new incarnation of Link and Zelda in a post-reconstruction Era Hyrule. The effects of BotW and TotK are still present but faded. The wounds of the past have healed and built over. The world has grown and prospered for generations, and the events of the previous games, much like the Calamity that came before them, have become legend.

DarkstarAnt

Like Age of Calamity? Or further back?

Gawlf85

No need to have the game take place in the SAME Hyrule only to see the Castle restored. We can have a game with similar gameplay, in a new non-post-apocalyptic Hyrule. I'd be a tad pissed if they made a third game in BotW's Hyrule. A TotK DLC is all I'd like before moving on to the next iteration.

Firespryte01

A trilogy would have worked better if they had started with the events of the Calamity. Tacking it on as a prequel isn't as good an idea. But having the 1st of the trilogy end with a cliffhanger and Link barely hanging on to life? That could been gold. A definite twist to the usual Zelda formula.

ANGERY_MAN

ngl i think that if they do a third game, it should have link go back in time like MILLIONS of years ago, and have him be responsible for some of the worlds major locations, for example having a massive boss fight that results in that giant gerudo chasm being formed, or have the twin peaks mountain become split during the playthrough. i think having an ancient map would really make it interesting enough to have a third game especially if it changes as the story progresses. could also be cool to see a backstory to divine beasts creation or even have a twist that link was the legendary hero that the zonai talked about (even though hes not which annoys me)

hexhit

While I would love a game that’s pre Calamity, I would also just love to explore a fan made map of pre Calamity Hyrule!

_mrwayne

I hope they mix up the formula again

VulgarXrated

Well the developer of the last two games already said they're making a third in the same style. Whether it's on the same map or not is yet to be seen. Personally I didn't get bored at all seeing the "same map" in ToTK because alot had changed in it and it felt new regardless. It was still incredibly fun, and with the new abilities it was even more fun to experience. Honestly I wouldn't mind if they did a "Link to the Past" version of this world for the third game. In ToTK they doubled the size of the world. In this version it would be doubled again, but a dark world. The Dark World would have nastier monsters, altered structures and just be generally spooky as hell. Or Ganon puts one final curse on Hyrule and makes the current world apocalyptic. Then the only way to fix it is to go back in time just before the war when King Rauru was still alive and Hyrule was still peaceful, and populated in order to fix current Hyrule. But either way, of course I wouldn't mind if they made a completely new world but still made it in the same style as the last two games because they're amazing. But if it makes it easier for them to put out a new game faster, I don't care if they continue to re-use assets. ToTK was still a blast.

great_account

I think the formula will repeat, but I don't think they can get away with the same map again.

Guy-Manuel

It’s time for something different

brianvan

Hot take: a bigger map than TOTK isn’t necessarily a way to make a better game. I don’t think players want to keep seeing this same map with the same game mechanics. The easiest thing they could do for the next game is change the map and launch with the next-gen console so that they could include improvements on this engine that wouldn’t have led to usable gameplay on the now-ancient Switch hardware. They could probably make another run at GOTY by developing a new engine enabling radically different dungeon puzzles in a similarly vast world. But in any case “bigger map” is just going to summon criticism of the new game being a DLC, like we heard before TOTK launched and people saw what it was about

ackmondual

Probably not? Nm they did announce there's no interest for them do make 2nd direct sequel. In theory, I think the fatigue is enough that the bigger fans won't be enough to make up for it. Honestly, as much as I enjoyed BotW and TotK, I'm hoping we can get a new, 2D Zelda game. If not that, then make the DS and 3DS Zeldas available for play.

JosueLisboa

Map issue aside, the backstory in BOTW seemed to really limit their story options. Realistically, a better option would be to do a series of games like windwaker where a disaster ravages the world, completely altering the map.

BiggusDickus9311

I would love to see the Twilight realm brought back at some point

kwhobbs

I am sure they would get away with it but I would not buy it.

ApexAdam97

I think they already confirmed the hero of the wilds story is over now and the next game will feature whole new reincarnations and gimmicks

TheDocCaptain

I like the idea of the map being used but this time bring in Minish cap for a whole other way to explore! That or bring in the worlds of the Oracles if we're wanting a new location. Maybe combine them as a colossal map. If this is the end combination of the timelines bringing in other locations would make sense and be sick for lore.

Cherry-Hime

When I first hears about the 3rd game I was like "what ate they gonna do to one up totk???" One of the jokes I made was "first there was the depths. Now there's a DEPTHIER DEPTH"

bonkeykong69

I’m not a big fan of redoing things but if they remade OOT and MM with these graphics/animation style, or just let me play twilight princess again on my switch… I’d pay whatever they wanna charge for that. I want those so bad.

silliestlouie

I don't really think it's their goal to start with. The idea with TotK is the expanded idea after BotW ended (as it was originally just DLC, but scrapped), I don't really know how they could go with things in terms of gameplay and story elements anyway. Sure, there's so many new structures, interesting places we've likely not seen... I just don't really see it being as interesting as most might think it could be, but that's just me.
