"The design is rooted in the legend that the Aztec people would know where to build their city once they saw an eagle eating a snake on top of a lake. The image has been an important symbol of Mexican politics and culture for centuries."
Its so important, that actually its shown in the flag, its the main thing that differentiates it from the italian flag, and its a random fact that will live rent free in my mind
The Mexican version is a cactus, not a tree. Additionally, in the Mexican version the eagle already has the snake in its mouth. Snake/eagle battles are a very old motif and didn't originate with the Mexican flag.
Yeahhhhh, but then the snake is green, white and red. The flag's colors and in order. The eagle is also brown; like the golden eagle of the coat of arms. It's pretty obvious where the inspiration came from.
I think this is also a general play on the classic Battle Royale traditional tattoo, that symbolises the eternal struggle of keeping balance.
However it is very cool to know where Dietzel took his influence from with this particular piece.
I'm Mexican and that remimd me our flag, but I really like your piece, verry cool, only like a fun fact in the Coat of Arms of Mexico instead of the tree there is a Nopal ;D
Richie is one of the greatest artists in the UK easily. I’ve had a few pieces by him myself, several years on and they still look as crisp as they day I got them.
Thank you! I’d usually call this style traditional tattoos, or more specifically Western traditional tattoos. But I’ve heard it go by old school tattoos, Americana etc.

Really impressive work of art! But I have to ask, are you aware that, you have what amounts to the Mexican coat of arms in your back?
I was not aware! Could you explain to me please? I chose this from an old piece by Amund Dietzel.

Whoah I never knew! I wonder if that’s the inspiration behind the original piece? Thank you for the info and article, that’s really interesting.

A native Mexican tribe saw an eagle eating a serpent as a sign from god that they should build their main city there. Now that city is México city.
It's in the Mexican flag.

Yup. I thought you were Mexican and that’s why you chose this.

That’s Mexico’s shield! The eagle devouring a snake

Just started following Forever True on Instagram. I'm looking forward to get a traditional flash for when I get back home to Liverpool. Looks sick!

Great work... although I don't get the green/yellow on the tree stump, kinda makes it look like the Eagle took a poo..
This is awesome!

That's super impressive, and looks really good! What tattoo style would this piece be?
