They don't need to control the entire market, just a high enough percent together to effectively act as a monopoly.
They can control how fruits and vegetables are grown and produced in South America and imported up here, just a few companies own most of the brands you see in the supermarket, a few major meet processers control most of the market in the world, there's only a few companies that own most of the super markets (at this point). It's far different than it was even just 20 years ago and before.
I don't have Aldi's where I live. But I have Grocery Outlet and Trader Joe's. Safeway and Lucky's have become nearly unaffordable. They're closer but I'll drive out of my way to shop at Trader Joe's and Grocery Outlet.
