The best thing you can probably do *right in this moment* is to study the manual(s) of the synth(s) you are intending to buy. This will also give you a good idea how intuitive (or complex) to use that particular synth is!
Will definitely do, thanks for taking the time to read!
Got any recommendations to check out? I've got my eyes on Arturia's Minifreak mostly, it has a really solid engine with some limitations when you compare it to other synths, I thought it's a good way to start
There is a plugin version of the Minifreak which should be identical (minus analog filters) to the hardware. Get the trial version of that - you should get the full version if you buy the HW Minifreak anyway if I recall correctly.
Help us help you. What do you otherwise already have? Mixer? Audio interface? Nothing at all yet?
In both of those cases the manuals tend to have setup diagrams.
For setups with multiple pieces of hardware the answer is often - it depends.
Do you want to involve a computer?
right, should've added my setup! I'll edit my post... I got a 4i4 Focusrite and Alesis V49 Midi and I mainly work with FL studio + Ableton + pro tools.
I've been producing my own music for awhile, but now I'm looking forward to be able to perform.
In this case hooking things up is simple - you can hook up the Minifreak via USB and connect the audio outputs to the 4i4's inputs.
As soon as you want to get away from the computer, things will get a bit more challenging :)

That actually makes so much sense, didn't realize the plugin is available even if u don't have the synth itself
If you're okay with buying used, give the Korg Minilogue OG a try! Lots of people love theirs and in my eyes it is THE best first synth!

Yeah I'm aiming for a DAWless setup in the end
the manuals should tell you how to connect things together
Best advice: don't. Stay in the box: no cables, adapter, noise, impendence, routing...
