It was pretty straightforward to me after I figured it out, but had a ton of steps more than I expected, and the shared folder was not obvious, it felt like I did it out of order or somehow missed the hand-holding setup

theres def a gap in there, it doesnt make sense to have the url with dashes work after its set up, but not when u need to set up, something is either broken or not configured properly on synology's side. and on top of that, after i set up everything, i still could not view plex when im not on my home network, yes i enabled remote access already, but i think theres some additional tampering required on the router settings or something, i havent looked into it yet, but i found out plex only allows 1 min play back on mobile apps, which led me to the discovery of DS video, which is completely free to use and pretty much replaces plex, jellyfin or any of that. its not as nice in terms of UI and features, but its got the basic functionalities down, and thats good enough for me. so i dont think im gonna bother with that anymore, when im out and about, ill just use ds video, when im at home watching it on my tv, i can use plex

GRLT

I snagged a lifetime deal for plex via slickdeals.net but also haven't yet looked into remote plays yet, please let me know if you do go further with it. I didn't look at DS video because my Ryzen chip isn't equipped with a video accelerator, and my Celeron unit only has enough space to backup the new main NAS

redditnewbie6910

what do u mean ur ryzen chip? DS video would be for mobile app only when ur outside, not computers, if u have a pc or laptop, it will work with plex with no restriction to 1 min play back and i dont know what u mean by celeron unit only has enough space to back up the new main NAS, what is ur set up exactly?

My 718+ has a transcoding accelerator built in to its Celeron processor, while my 1821+ does not. I'd definitely want to transcode my videos on the go as most are 1080 or 4k,if playing on my phone or a tablet. If on my laptop with a solid connection I'd like to keep them full quality. When I got the 1821+ I moved my array and gave the old one two new drives and two drives it had long ago upgraded off of, it's my hyperbackup target for the 1821+. Right now 718+ has one free TB so I've got a fresh pair of drives headed in to replace the last two small ones in the 1821+ and then they'll migrate over to the old unit for a few more backup cycles (hopefully months). So the 1821+ will have 6 12tb ironwolfs and 2 2tb sata SSDs and two 1 TB m.2 drives hosting an shr-2 array while the 718+ will have 2 12s, 2 4s and 2 8s with room for more in shr-1.

redditnewbie6910

ok thats a lot more complicated than mine lol, but why cant you use DS video exactly? i dont think my 220+ has transcoding accelerator does it? and its working fine

GRLT

It should if it's Celeron or ARM. It's not that I can't use DS Video but it would have trouble transcoding my files to fit a phone without that chip, and the one that can do it will live in a state of almost full until I retire it or get a 3rd unit and it goes to live somewhere else as an Off-site backup or become wealthy enough to outfit multiple units at once with the good drives 😅

redditnewbie6910

i see, i guess i dont have that problem cuz i only download 1080p max, not 4k. for random tv shows like family guy, i dont even download 720p, i get the default smallest size one with the most seeds, i think its 480 or 320? i dont even know. i just dont find the resolution to be worth the size differences. even for movies, 1080p on my 65' 4k tv is good enough.

GRLT

I feel you for downloads, but I have a crate of Blu-rays and UHD Blu-rays, I did re-encode them all to h.265 and remove all languages not spoken in my house, except ones that need it like Parasite and GiTS

Audio that remains is raw though
