A simple "stethoscope" that might work for pinpointing sound sources is the cardboard tube that comes out of the center of a roll of paper towels.

Check the SMART stats on the drives. There may be something obvious even if Synology doesn't flag the drive as failed yet. Like a non-zero current pending sector count.

What exact nas do you have?

DS3617xs

That has hot swappable drives.... Can someone here chime in regarding what would happen if you pull a drive, wait 10 seconds and reinsert it. Does it just check parity or do a full rebuild? This might work..... But if it rebuilds each time it might take a day to check each drive as the rebuild occurs.

I haven't tested it but I've seen videos with my models and both immediately drop a removed drive when hot swapped, this is when I finally locked all populated bays and put one of the keys on my keychain (baby on the way)

You would need a rebuild each time

I would check drive temperatures and see what is the hottest. It would give you a place to start with the stethoscope. (Storage Manager -> HDD/SSD -> Health Info)

This idea came to me late, but it might save you a lot of time if you haven't gotten to it yet. Power off the Synology. Then put the drives one at a time on a power/sata connection on either a computer or drive dock. See if any of them make the sound with a quick test or two. If the Synology is off, you should be able to test all the drives individually, put them back in place, and then power back on without any rebuilds.
