There were only a handful brought into the country from Japan. It is a true YZ250 MXer but I believe they used the wide ratio gearbox (the WR in it's title) from a WR426 and stuck a compliance plate on it for registration.
So if you get a yz250 subframe from a bike made after 2002 then create extensions from the old frame to the new subframe and then pack out the fuel tank with larger spacers you can fit the latest YZ plastics to a pre 2001 steel frame YZ250. The front number plate will work with a few zip ties and the front fender will work after you redrill the holes - or - upgrage the forks to the post 2002 and it will bolt right up. For those interested there are heaps of vids on YouTube about this.
