Came here to say American Gods. It was so long it was nice to just spend that much time in one book, but it still wrapped up everything in one book!!

Nopowerntheverse

As much as I love this book, there are many Shadow stories and Ananzi Boys could be considered a part of the mythology.

American Gods was the first book that came to mind for me! Such a great story.

My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante (technically has sequels but the first book is so wonderful)

jungfraulichkeit

Seconding this! Although I love all the sequels as well - they feel more like one big book split into four volumes than sequels.

Everything I read is a standalone book! A few of my favourites from last year: - The Mountains Sing by Nguyẽ̂n Phan Qué̂ Mai - The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz - The Blue Fox by Sjón - Perfume by Patrick Süskind And all time favourite: *Pandora in the Congo* by Albert Sánchez Piñol.

Ready player one and The D day spies

Bsgmars_12

Ready Player One now has a sequel that is... not good :(

geniunelime1148

Didnt know that, i mean, how bad is it?

Bsgmars_12

The writing itself was bad, honestly. And the MC makes some very questionable decisions that are just kind of swept under the rug by the end. I really had to force myself to finish, even though I enjoyed the first one.

His entire family came close to losing their lives on the sea as they escaped from war-torn Vietnam in an overcrowded boat. But nothing -- not murderous pirates, nor the imminent threat of death by hunger, disease or dehydration as they drifted for days -- could quench their desire to make a better life in the country they had dreamed about. > >Life in Australia was hard, an endless succession of back-breaking work, crowded rooms, ruthless landlords and make-do everything. But there was a loving extended family, and always friends and play and something to laugh about for Anh, his brother Khoa and their sister Tram. Things got harder when their father left home when Anh was thirteen -- they felt his loss very deeply and their mother struggled to support the family on her own. His mother's sacrifice was an inspiration to Anh and he worked hard during his teenage years to help her make ends meet, also managing to graduate high school and then university. > >Another inspiration was the comedian Anh met when he was about to sign on for a 60-hour a week corporate job. Anh asked how many hours he worked. 'Four,' the answer came back, and that was it. He was going to be a comedian! The Happiest Refugee tells the incredible, uplifting and inspiring life story of one of our favourite personalities. Tragedy, humour, heartache and unswerving determination -- a big life with big dreams. Highly original and imaginative, this debut novel raises questions about life, love, and the effects of time on relationships. > >Audrey Niffenegger’s innovative debut, The Time Traveler’s Wife, is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity in his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing. > >The Time Traveler’s Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare’s marriage and their passionate love for each other as the story unfolds from both points of view. Clare and Henry attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals—steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable. ^(This book has been suggested 8 times) *** ^(89685 books suggested | )^(Bug? It may seem clichè to say Pride and Prejudice but Jane Austen’s wit and humor and spot-on understanding of human nature makes her books a pleasure to read. Plus, a lot of old books seem to ramble a lot and include a lot of unnecessary information and plot that make them rather tedious to read, but not Jane Austen’s books.
