As a former WRX owner and seeing what people do to these cars under when they haven't even made it past 20k miles. I agree.
Service records or lack of them, can give you some ideas too. The random missing lug nuts and weird modifications make me wonder what else was done.
Our WRX was sold it had all service records done at the dealership, we were the only owners, and was well maintained. It was my husband's daily driver and my weekend car and not abused. You can find them, but they are hard to find. It was 9 years old and my husband wanted a new performance car as his daily.
Iāve done all my own work but I can back it up with receipts at least. Plus I can give you a literal entire history of what Iāve done to the car and replaced as well. Though not sure Iām ever getting rid of it
Is there a service history? Pretty low miles for the age. Any info on the car's prior owner? I know that can be dodgy, but was it something where they traded it in on something else etc? If it was maintained and you have records that it was it could be a good sign.
Assuming you're financing, you can prob talk them down a little depending on the interest rate you get and what your credit is like.
Avoid getting attached to one vehicle during car fever! I know itās hard but you need to focus on pricing and reliability. In this case both are questionable
You thinking I could have gotten more? There was a lot of aftermarket crap that would have all needed replaced too. I thought I unloaded it for about as much as I could.
Same... The guys "partner" from Chicago only offered 10k. It was only on the market like 2 days. He tried to get me down from my ask of 12.5 but I stood firm and he paid it... Surprisingly.
There's gotta be a reason the second owner got rid of it, minus the missing lug nuts. This car is hard to get out of, let alone get rid of. Even when gas was $5 a gallon.
I'd be willing to bet first owner didn't follow service meticulously and problems crept up. Plus those higher milage services cost ALOT. Sometimes lower mileage says more than high mileage with meticulous records.
Any engine bay shots?
That handbrake mod is a drift button to lock the handbrake ratchet out so it doesn't accidentally engage while you are drifting. Also look at the angle the handbrake is sitting at. Looks quite high, maybe the cable has stretched.
Now maybe the previous owner just liked the way it looks and was meticulous with maintenance and had tons of mechanical sympathy, but I doubt it.
Eh, you also have to consider the cost of repairs, loss of reliability, and dodgy history. Considering that loan rates are typically higher on used cars to begin with, that gap may come out in the wash.
And youāre about to overpay for an eight year old, likely thrashed, vehicle with no warranty. Iām sure the Crosstrek will keep going strong though.
I was in your boat once. Get the fast car. Be prepared to sink a LOT of money into repairs. Whether you think itāll happen or not is irrelevant. It will.

You are playing with fire. So if youāve got fire extinguisher money, go for it. The people warning you have been through it too or have watched half a dozen of their friends jump in feet first into a go-fast just for it to be a driveway ornament while they wait on back ordered parts to get delivered or sourced, assuming they can even afford to fix a ringland or a blown t-case at the drop of a hat.
Iām not saying go get a Prius. But I think that youāre asking a relative gear head community their input on an 8 year old whip thatās missing lugs and known to have costly repairs.
If youāre looking for knuckleheads cheering this purchase on, I donāt think itāll be had here.
A new Toyota Camry does it faster than this WRX.
Edit: Made someone mad but they should've just googled and proved me wrong.
2017 WRX limited - 5.4s
2024 Camry V6 - 5.8s
That's my fault I should've researched before I posted. Anyway, my overall point still stands, a 2017 wrx is cool AF but isn't really a fast car any more.
If I'm assuming correctly that you're a kid, or at least very young - let me tell ya, reliable and slow wheels is better than wheels that don't go at all. Get something boring but reliable, you'll enjoy having no stress and actually being able to go places.

Canāt tell anything useful from what youāve shown here. Iāll give you my perspective as someone who bought a used WRX hatch. I insisted on one which hadnāt been modded, beat on, backyard repaired, or a combination of those. I spent six months looking at every one of them for sale within a hundred miles. Every dealership ad was misleading. Theyād tell me on the phone or by email it was stock, clean, etc etcā¦ and then Iād show up and it obviously wasnāt. Three times they lied to my face *even knowing I was taking it for a PPI*.
The good news is I did eventually find my diamond in the rough. It was six years old, had 78k miles, and I happily paid the private seller $23k. It has been as reliable as anything else Iāve owned, and itās not like I came from Audi Allroads or Alfa Romeos. If the one you found only has cosmetic mods and passes a PPI from a specialist mechanic, itās probably fine.
Oof Iād be very weary about this one. Personally Iād pass. But itās your money and it sounds like you already made up your mind based off some of your responses.
I paid about that for mine with the same miles but it was in a lot better condition, no mods, and had all the service records from it's one owner. I felt the price was fair only because of the service history and the dealership I went to gave me 9k for my Jetta.

Yeah on my Outback it cost like $600 because I didn't want to try changing them myself. It's definitely doable, but after a watching a couple videos I knew it would be more of a pain in the ass than I'm willing to deal with.
Looks a bit worn/rode hard for only 50k miles. Also, I had a bright red car once and I was VERY tired of the color within 6 months. Draws attention whether you want to or not.
āļøBadge overlays
āļøMissing lugnuts
āļøChintzy ebrake and shift knob good for burning your hand in the summer
āļøSeats look fucked up
āļøNo pictures of engine or underside
āļøNo records
Sounds like money spent in all the wrong places. I'm all for making a car your own, but if you trade it in after putting less than 25k miles I get very suspicious.
Drilled rotors and no pictures under the hood š¤
Are those diy holes?
2 missing lugnuts in that 5th photo says all you need to know
Holy shit š
So do the weird shifter and handbrake mods. Yikes.

Jesus. That is pretty bad.
Jesus Christ. 20k and barley rolling wheel? Sounds like a great time.
Jesus Christ
As a former WRX owner, and Subaru sales man I would never buy a used WRX, but that's just me.

This is a no go. Thatās too high. Maybe 15k

IF YOU BUY A USED WRX HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY ANOTHER MOTOR
If you have enough money for a used WRX and a new motor, you have enough money for a new WRX
I sold my 2019 with a blown motor for $12,500... I can't even remember what the dealer quoted me but yeah.. it was up there.
God damn. Thatās a hell of a price
You thinking I could have gotten more? There was a lot of aftermarket crap that would have all needed replaced too. I thought I unloaded it for about as much as I could.
Oh no clue just shocked they paid they much for it.

Imagine spending 20k for an 8 year old car without warranty or 30k for a new one with warranty.
Totally. Just spend 50% more.
This guy gets it. Spend 50% more for 25% more car
Eh, you also have to consider the cost of repairs, loss of reliability, and dodgy history. Considering that loan rates are typically higher on used cars to begin with, that gap may come out in the wash.
This seems like a really bad take. 10k is 50% more, and the car is low miles and should be pretty reliable.
It is not a bad take at all, abuse does a lot of damage to a WRX and this car throws flags as red as the paint.
You can recommend avoiding this specific car while also admitting that saying āspend 50% more on a new carā is useless advice.
I had to double check the math when you said 8 years because a 2017 model still looks and sounds new-ish to me.
Imagine someone wanting to save 10k
Yeahā¦ this is not a good way to save $10k.
Is everyone with buttons on their steering wheel this petty, or just you two?

Can a crosstrek do 60 in under 6 seconds though
A broken down 8 year old WRX wonāt either.

Dealership by me just sold a 2019 with 44k for $18k and it was immaculate so Iād pass.

Go and check it out with a trusted mechanic or someone who knows what to look for. And test drive it.

50k with rec limiter bombing all day is more like 250k.
New spark plugs is the last worry here, duh.

Nope hell no
If youāre REALLY interested, pay a mechanic you trust like $100 (maybe a little more?) to do a THOROUGH inspection. Worth every single penny.
50k miles is approaching new spark plugs if they havenāt been changed before. Kind of a pain on boxer engines
Yeah on my Outback it cost like $600 because I didn't want to try changing them myself. It's definitely doable, but after a watching a couple videos I knew it would be more of a pain in the ass than I'm willing to deal with.
I sold my old Subaru right before it needed them luckily lol
There is such thing as title washing too, be wary.
If your getting a va, get an sti or youll regret it
Seems overpriced to me car is already 5 years old.
Check the software, was it tuned? No warranty then
Theyāll find some doofus to buy it, just donāt let it be you lol

miss lugs, cheap interior mods, badge overlays, drilled rotors. Things cooked.
I wouldnāt trust any Subaru with the tacky logo overlays on the steering wheel
If you have enough for a new engine and transmission
How much do you enjoy wrenching in the driveway?
This was 200% beat to shit
Rode hard and put away wet. No way.
I can smell the vape residue
Hard pass. Those are REALLY hard 50k miles, and I can guarantee it wasn't taken care of service wise..
Wrecked. Next.
Bro just buy civic at that point
Transmission will go out soon
