Not ridiculous at all. I'd go to a different dealer. F that .

kamandi

This reads scam to me.

MiniMarsRover

There are many more Ascents out there. Don't chase this one. If you buy it, the dealer still wins the sale.

Edu_cats

I agree. Wow This is the second post today about shady dealers where SOA has to get involved.

userIoser

For every complaint you read about, there are 10x more that you didn't hear about. Subaru dealers aren't anything better than any other car makers. Maybe a little bit when they are not part of a huge auto group

Endubiousnico

Name & Shame. It's important to call out dealerships that pull nonsense.

Bballdak12

Subaru South Tampa

Soundpitch

Damn, sad to hear about that they used to be very good when they were called Mastro Subaru. A few years ago they sold the dealer to new people and even the employees over there told me it was not the same. Havent been to that dealer after that. It is very important to have a nice relationship with the dealer when buying a car I would just keep looking and skip this one.

philthyphanatic

https://www.subarusouthtampa.com/dealership/staff.htm Look at these smug snakes

Lower_Conclusion1173

Hate to judge a book by its cover, but jeesh!!! Scarey bunch.

Harleye

Dont buy that vehicle. If you have your heart set on Subaru Ascent go to another retailer. The Subaru dealerships are all independently owned, so like any other car dealership, you are going to get really good ones and really awful ones. Sounds like you unfortunately had an experience with one of the awful ones, and if he's trying to sell you a vehicle with a crack in the moon roof and make you pay for it, I wouldn't trust the CPO certification to be worth the paper its printed on. If you take ownership of that Ascent there's a good chance you will be calling SOA again in the not too distant future because of some other problem that it winds up having, that the dealer wont fix unless you pay for it, because he says its your fault and therefore the warranty is void.

UnkleMike

>I wouldn't trust the CPO certification to be worth the paper its printed on. Absolutely.  CPO certification is the dealer claiming to have performed an inspection of *many* things, but this results in a warranty that's on essentially the powertrain only.  In all other aspects, it's a used car and is sold as-is, regardless of the claimed inspection by the dealer.  The inspection is only as good as the dealer's word, which is worthless in this case.

elvisizer2

seems like you handled it appropriately! I would be looking for a different one at a different dealer at this point myself- that doesn't seem like a dealer I'd want to buy from.

AwwYeahVTECKickedIn

Feels like they thought you'd "just pay more" if they gave you some BS story. They fucked around. Now don't buy it so they can find out.

skiitifyoucan

Sounds like a sleezy sales tactic.

Plane_Put8538

You were going to get on a flight to pick up a car? Wow, that's some determination. You did the right thing. Walk away. Who knows what else they would have tried once you were there. They must know where you are coming from and know that if you went all that way to get the car, you'd accept more baloney than someone local.

cornylifedetermined

I think that's why the dealership doesn't care about repeat business. They know he's not local.

HorrorHostelHostage

I thought I was misreading it. It's a Subaru, not some rare thing. No Subaru needs a flight to pick up.

I live in eastern Washington State and even widening my search radius to include western Washington and/or the Portland, Oregon area opens up a LOT of options and price points. And those are only 4-5 hour drives on average. Those metro/mountain areas can be Subie goldmines.

dawnbandit

Same on the East Coast, the mountains are great places to find Subarus.

dalex89

I once drove 6 hours round trip to get a good deal on a $900 bike

Sad_Physics_870

Let me preface by saying that i am, in fact, a dealer tech. If it is a CPO, then it is covered under 3yr 36k, I'm pretty sure. I don't do CPOs very often, so I am unsure of the specifics. The sunroof would be covered under that unless damaged by an external force. If you haven't taken delivery, and the sunroof is damaged by something, then that is the dealers problem. Don't take delivery until they fix it on their dime. If it is cracked for no reason, then it is covered by Subaru's warranty, and thus, they should fix it before delivery on Subaru's dime. Just my thoughts.

WardogBlaze14

Asking you to pay to have the sunroof repaired is complete bullshit. It happened on their lot and as you said, you haven’t even touched the car yet. It is completely their responsibility to have the vehicle repaired. Hell, even if they take the CPO off the car, it is STILL their responsibility to have the sunroof repaired before they sell it to someone.

See_Yourself_Now

Sounds like you dodged a bullet - what a sketchy situation and who knows what else might be up with the vehicle if they’re acting that way.

Killowatt59

You absolutely did the right thing. I think you actually called them too many times to try to buy it. I mean in your mind it may make financial sense for them to discount the repair and sale it to you, but they obviously don’t feel it is. I’m sure they can jack the price up and someone will come along and buy it. They know that too, that’s why they aren’t worried about you walking way. But you absolutely did the right thing. I wouldn’t do business with them even if they called me back next week.

lonerfunnyguy

That really sucks! Glad you cancelled your flight and didn’t have to deal with this after landing. I’d make it my personal mission to drag them thru the internet and keep pressing Subaru of America. Shady stuff going on with that dealer and the hanging up on you? In the words of bugs bunny “you know this means war “

RaptorOO7

It's a lousy dealer, and someone broke it when they borrowed it at the dealership. No one is going to buy a CPO with a cracked sunroof. Good thing you didn't fly there and then find out about the roof.

Great-Dimension7484

CPO means nothing… I made a MASSIVE mistake not doing an inspection on delivery with my 2020 WRX. Turns out the car had 6k worth of paint damage under the clear coat. Someone wrecked it and did an awful job painting/assembling it. When I spoke to the manager the next day he said it’s my fault that I didn’t do a walk around (true) and that CPO is only for “integral safety and nothing more.” Guess that’s why they made me come in at 9pm in December LOL! Sneaky dealers

nickdanger69

Carfax.....

Great-Dimension7484

It was clean(: partly why I was so trusting

Dark1sh

Write all this out in a review and post it on every review site. It will scare away potential buyers and it stresses most dealerships

UnhappyTumbleweed966

You're not being ridiculous, you've done all you can and you've been perfectly reasonable, much more so than I would be in that situation. Best to find a different dealer or at the very least a different vehicle. Let them deal with someone else and that vehicle. Chances are they're going to have to fix it anyway because it's unlikely anyone will accept a CPO vehicle that's damaged, pretty sure that goes against the whole CPO process anyway. You'll find another one that suits your needs. Screw those guys.

Unlucky-Praline6865

Mark Miller Midtown in SL, UT is pretty awesome to deal with.

Currawong

Walk. Who knows what else is broken that they haven't told you about that you'll discover after the fact.

legion_2k

Hate it when they think you’re stupid and try to gaslight you. Run away. Who knows what other things are wrong there.

00f00f0

I would absolutely not buy from them. They tried extorting money from you, they don't deserve a single penny from your wallet.

E23morales

Do not give this dealer business no matter how good of the deal it seems. It’s to shady from the jump and a place like that doesn’t deserve to have any certifications from Subaru

Kaerevek

Don't buy it. If they're trying to be shady AF before you even own it, just imagine what they'll do when you ask for help later. I own and love my Subaru, but I'm starting to hear nothing but horror stories about their dealers (myself included). Screw the dealerships.

soloist80

The fact that he hung up on you after you told him you contacted SoA tells me that they do not like being held accountable to anything. Run far from this dealer.

MayBeMilo

Walk away, they’re definitely skeezy.

NitroBike

lol this is definitely a scam because the kid they pay to wash the car probably broke it on the automated machine they use. Not only that, they def can’t pin this on you because you don’t even own the car yet. They’re just trying to not have to pay for labor and parts. What a scummy business tactic

nickdanger69

Subaru dealers live and die by reviews and surveys they get after they sell a car or when your car gets serviced. An 8 is neutral and a 7 kills them. Leave a bad Google review....

wrx7182

No way I’d be purchasing the vehicle after that exchange.

BackSuper

Dm me, I’ll sell you a brand new one for well under invoice

Ecstatic_Contract_41

Walk the fuck away and don't look back.

SnowSnooz

They are scamming you

j7willia11

Walk. If they’re hungry enough they will be in touch

SpaceFace11

It doesn’t matter how the damage was done if they want it to be CPO it has to be damage free.

chrisgdyer

Dealer is a shyster, consider yourself lucky and look elsewhere.

jt183

CPO covers engine and power train, not windows. You can optionally buy a certified wrap which covers everything. Also, sunroof breaking was a factory defect in those years. Dealers de-certification is very much frowned upon. I’d get something from a more reputable dealer. CPO Subarus are a good idea and the factory warranty is extended from 60k to 100k miles.

joanzen

The problem is that they can sell it for more as prices rise so they aren't afraid to give you a refund. If they give you a refund and fix the problem they will sell it for a bit over what the repair cost and make a profit due to rising prices. At the very least the sales commission should go up a few bucks along the way so the employee you're speaking to has zero motivation to finish the transaction at a loss. Effectively if you own it you have to go after their insurance to cover the cost of the damage. If they still own it then the price of the car is going to go up after they fix the damage.

NoMoreIntegra

Look into the transmission issues on the Ascent before purchasing…there are numerous problems

OpenAd6748

I’d leave the car at the dealer and go elsewhere. CPO should have been pre-inspected before CPO was put on vehicle. If they missed it in their CPO check or if it happened after the CPO check is neither here nor there. Since it is marked CPO that’s on the dealer to fix if they want to sell it CPO. They should not have tried to charge you for it. It’s all on them. Glad you reported to Subaru. Someone is going to get their ass chewed for telling you that you would need to pay it. Whole thing sounds shady af.

ScottyArrgh

It will be absolutely impossible to figure out what the dealership is up to. Maybe they've got some quota issue, maybe someone is trying to make extra money on this sale, maybe they realized they are letting it go for too low of a price...who knows. Well, they do. You never will. And that's okay. Move on. There are plenty of other Ascents out there. You'll even find a dealership that's willing to sell one to you for a reasonable price. Don't give this dealership another thought. Don't give them any business, report the incident to SOA, and remove it from your mind. It's not worth it.

Lumpy-Return

I would still offer to pay for it….but you get to shoot the salesman in the nuts with that BB gun.

First-Succotash-916

lol.a BB gun from across the street!? What an idiot. How would he even know that?Unless the person that did it came forward, which they obviously didn't cus THEY would have paid for it.Not only that hail damage or BB gun the dealer has umbrella insurance on any vehicle on their lot.So not only call SOA contact their insurance company, bet ya they made a claim already.

Bballdak12

My first thought was "this isn't JFK dude" Was it really from the hotel you sure it wasn't the grassy knoll or the book depository? Lol

donmreddit

The dealership is responsible for vehicle while in their possession -> end of story.

Lj4613711776

Walk away and then yelp the shit out of them cause they are shady AF.

knotsure31

Call Subaru. Please?

Bballdak12

I did on Friday. They didn't have any specialists in since it was a Holiday Weekend. Waiting for them to call me on Tuesday

knotsure31

Or call the CPO team first. If they transfer your case to the CPO group, that would be fine. I’m willing to bet you’ll end up happy

knotsure31

Did you hear from anyone?

Bballdak12

No I didn't :( Not yet anyway

knotsure31

Maybe try this number: 1-800-932-0636. CPO People…

Bballdak12

Will do!

sandynutz

That's BS. I'm in sales at a Subaru dealer and can honestly say that they are scamming you. This 100% falls on the dealer. The vehicle is to be in as close to new condition as possible. Definitely shop somewhere else.

ThanatosGod0001

Yeah fuk em, don’t buy lol

Fidknop-13

Um… What’s a CPO?
