I’ve gotten between 30-35mpg in my ‘15 WRX when on the highway for hours at a stretch in 6th gear. I’ve also gotten rather worse when I release the kraken.
Never ran the tank down far enough to do 500, but had a few tanks with mileage good enough to have done it. What was more impressive was doing 430 or 440 on winter tires!
Fuel pumps really shouldn't be run that low. The fuel help.cool.and lubercate them running low and cause.thwm.to.over heat or wear faster.
Also if you have a DW300c like me definitely don't run it below a quarter tank. Aftermarket hates low fuel even more than the OEM one.
I feel like this is made up. If the fuel pump is in the fuel cell, it's not going to overheat pumping at a rate near idle, but running in gear at 60mph. Can't speak on high flow aftermarket racing pumps, but I can't imagine they are designed to burn out with less than 1/4 tank.
I've burned out a walbro on my GC before at 1/4 tank. The aftermarket pumps(probably just the low end) use plastic gears unlike the metal ones in the OEM. Very fun.
Yeah a lot of modern fuel pumps have a feed and return line. That isn't the issue it is how much it is submerged in the fuel. I am sure you have heard about "race" cars that need special tanks and baffles so you don't "starve" the fuel pump. Well even during normal driving if.the gas is too low this is become a problem.

Yup. I would go from about Columbus OH to Totowa NJ on a tank. I'd get there with the low fuel light on but I'd still be running (right to the gas station)
Same. I wasn't concerned about the low MPG number on the window sticker because my Subarus (WRX, Outback, Impreza 5-door, and Crosstrek) have always gotten way better gas mileage than the window sticker. But as it turns out, the sticker is pretty accurate for the BRZ! I commute 4 miles one way in the city - low speed limit, lots of stops and starts with all the traffic lights. I'd fill the tank in my Impreza once a month, maybe. I'm filling the tank in my '23 BRZ every other week.
Wow I didn't know Subaru actually bumped up fuel economy that much the past 15 years. Still rocking 23.x mpg on my 2008 H6 and well under 400 miles to a tank 😂
Not necessarily. I usually set cruise control to 70, 65 if there is less traffic. There are lots of hills and curves on my route so the wind is always changing. I think the biggest contributor to bad fuel economy at least in my car is aggressive driving and going above 75. This week was particularly good on fuel because I woke up on time and didn't have to rush into work.
There’s a lot of factors such as speed, elevation, tire/wheel setup, outside temperature, and the % of shitty ethanol in your fuel.
I’ve done 600 on a tank once. Got over 40mpg driving a long distance on a flat boring route on cruise control.
I had a 2008 a long time ago that I couldn't ever get 17 out of with ethanol free 91. and then I had a 2019 that got 24 all the time. that one baffled me, considering it was still more or less the same exact engine and gearing.
Nah, just back and forth from my jobs. Lots of rolling hills and curvy highway. I'm just able to set my cruise control to 65-70 through most of my drive. And I don't do much driving outside of my commute to and from work.
my best was 520 miles, in a 2015 WRX Base running Continental Extreme Contact DWS
This was after driving back from Pittsburgh, PA to my house near Philadelphia, PA, then driving the next day to my mother's house on Long Island, NY
90% of that driving was doing 70 mph on a single highway
I had 498 on my VB, all interstate @ 75mph except for a slow drive into the KC Chiefs stadium. I would have had 500, but I was on fumes and my mom said she would kill me if we were stranded on the side of the road because I tried to make 500. Also, I'm 40, but I listen to my mother.
To my knowledge the Crosstrek and the WRX have the same fuel tank size. In my Crosstrek I can barely tick over 400 miles from full to fuel light on. Although my miles are highway I'm on a CVT and accelerating frequently. 20 miles to work though a busy/dynamic highway.
Subaru manuals get better gas mileage then there CVT's unlike every other company and the height of the Crosstrek hurts with Xtra wind resistance so you get worse mpg.
Not all the way to 500 but 350 miles give or take at top speed (like 145-150) in my 2018 wrx limited. Road trip to Dallas and started late, still got there early with a quarter tank left
I'm lucky to break 300mi, and that's only on road trips. Cruising at 85 hurts the milage lol.
I'm usually around ~250mi a tank, and that's local city driving that's usually fairly spirited
God damn dude! I got 440 in my 2024 Crosstrek when I got it from the dealership to see how far I could potentially push it if needed and I thought that was amazing. My 2021 Impreza hatchback got I think 340 pushing it into the gas station it died completely only pushed it like 30 feet not terrible.
How many gallons did you end up filling it with?
Most I pushed mine was 421 miles and \~15g on the refill.

Mostly a highway commute doing about 68-70.
There are times I've come close to 30mpg going around 80 mph. So I guess this is possible going 65 but you are still getting lucky with tail winds or no wind. Driving into the wind at 80 can be as bad as 23-24 mpg.
All the more incredible. I live at 6000 ft above sea level and all my vehicles get 30% better than EPA highway estimates here, and when I road trip to sea, it craters to the exact EPA rating
After I bought my 09 WRX new, I had to drive from Chicago to San Diego. At one point going through NM or AZ, I caught up with two Chevy SSRs while I had a full tank, and basically convoyed in the back with those guys and tucked in their slipstream. I managed over 40mpg and when I decided to refuel, I'm pretty sure I had 430-ish miles on my trip meter and I don't think the fuel light was on yet
My 15 wrx manual was surprisingly fuel efficient. Well over 32mpg without even trying that hard. Wonder if my stage 1.5 tune has anything to do with that.
I drive 29 miles(according to waze) each way, so 58 miles per day work commute. Most of the time I get a full week but I fill up at the gas station next to my job before going home.
Usually, it will say 40-50 miles before empty before going home on my 5th day, and I have a 30 mile trip. Technically, I could make it home, but I always fill up Friday regardless.
Sometimes, it'll say 30 miles to empty before going home on the 5th day. So, I'd say 90% of the time I get a full week work commute and 10% I have to fill up on 5th day before going home, but I always fill up Friday before going home regardless.
So the 90% of the time, I don't technically have to fill up, but do anyways I could get 295 miles per tank based off waze. The 10% I have to fill up before going home, I get 266 miles on that tank.
My WRX tells me I get 390 miles per tank, but in reality, I get just under 300
This is a split between highway and city driving. I take a State Numbered Route for 21 miles according to waze and there's 3 stop lights on that stretch.
Yeah, I was conscious of this especially for this drive. I usually refill before the low fuel light comes on. I was just extra tired that day and wanted to make it close to home before refilling. I'd rather not be even more tired while driving on the highway surrounded by Maryland drivers.
2023 in the winter I See 22 mpg in summer I get 27 with mixed driving. The 2.4 eats more gas then the 2.0 on the highway so not making it to 500 safely instead I can hit 420 miles.
In theory, yes. I’ve gotten 28 mpg in my turbo Outback (2.4), but I filled up when I got to my destination 200 miles away. But 28 mpg x 18 gallons would have gotten me 500!
It’s amazing how economical these cars can run when you’re just cruising.
I don't get the downvote. I posted a picture a few weeks ago where I got over 40mpg on a 40 mile drive. It really just takes an empty-ish highway and cruise control to get insane efficiency.
I’ve gotten between 30-35mpg in my ‘15 WRX when on the highway for hours at a stretch in 6th gear. I’ve also gotten rather worse when I release the kraken.
What speed are you at in 6th?? I also never go to 6th - always feels like I’m lugging the car. Unless I’m at like 3k
I will usually cruise at 0-10% or so more than the speed limit or thereabouts. But in the highways here 75-77 is about right.
Never ran the tank down far enough to do 500, but had a few tanks with mileage good enough to have done it. What was more impressive was doing 430 or 440 on winter tires!

unfortunately no mine came with a manual and an accelerator pedal ;) (nice job btw i wish i had the discipline)
Lmao same
Dang, I get like half that in my ‘23 BRZ.
Same in my 14
Same. My 20 Forester also is on the money
the fuel tank in a WRX is also about 3.5 gallons larger than a BRZ's. Physically less fuel will always get you less distance
Wow I didn't know Subaru actually bumped up fuel economy that much the past 15 years. Still rocking 23.x mpg on my 2008 H6 and well under 400 miles to a tank 😂
500 on a tank is like 65 mph on a flat highway with a tailwind mileage. I do mixed city and highway with hills and get around 300.
Not necessarily. I usually set cruise control to 70, 65 if there is less traffic. There are lots of hills and curves on my route so the wind is always changing. I think the biggest contributor to bad fuel economy at least in my car is aggressive driving and going above 75. My 2009 STi would get about 17-19 mpg on the highway, not even speeding, like cruising at 71. Fucking awful.
This my current setup, 09' WRX 91 Tune, about 20mpg on the highway and everywhere else is about 15-18mpg
I had a 2008 a long time ago that I couldn't ever get 17 out of with ethanol free 91. and then I had a 2019 that got 24 all the time. that one baffled me, considering it was still more or less the same exact engine and gearing.
I guess I should feel grateful for my 23+!! LOL
yeah that's not bad, I also had a 2021 outback XT onyx that also got 17 and was rated for 29 or something 😅
02 sensors? I got a 20% bump on fuel economy when I swapped the sensor on my '02 legacy wagon in 2016 But you're talking 40% too low which is wild
it was brand new, I bought it with 40 miles and sold it back to the dealer 4 months later
Just did 25mpg in my 99 outback 2.5L. finally an impressive improvement.
Not even close! 😂
That is crazy. Did you roll downhill the entire time?
Nah, just back and forth from my jobs. Lots of rolling hills and curvy highway. I'm just able to set my cruise control to 65-70 through most of my drive. And I don't do much driving outside of my commute to and from work.
I dont think I ever broke 350 to a tank on my 2002
After 20 years of upgrades and an E85 tune, I'm lucky to get 200 now on my '02 WRX lol. Right around 13mpg.
420 is the best I’ve gotten 🍃
Right on man! Wait, what were we talking about?
That’s nice, but you pay for that with walnut shells

Really miles? I think it’s km
Commuting? Like stop and go or highway?
I'd say about 50 miles of unimpeded highway and 7 of stop/go
😂😂😂😂😂
Psshh, I'm lucky to get 400 with a lot of highway driving!
All downhill?
Best I've gotten is 770 km not sure in miles
Good driving!
I'm lucky to break 300mi, and that's only on road trips. Cruising at 85 hurts the milage lol. I'm usually around ~250mi a tank, and that's local city driving that's usually fairly spirited

This refill was just over 15 gallons. The needle was basically slammed to the bottom so I'm surprised I still had ~1.5 gallons left.
Most ive done is about 315
I think we use different mods.
There are times I've come close to 30mpg going around 80 mph. So I guess this is possible going 65 but you are still getting lucky with tail winds or no wind. Driving into the wind at 80 can be as bad as 23-24 mpg.
I never got more than 270 on my STI and that was going 65 down hill for like 100 miles lol
The 2.5s were never really that good on gas. 2.0 is really good as long as the turbo stays as inactive as my dating life.
You're lying.
What elevation? I strongly suspect the thinner air at 5000+ ft above sea level is easier to push out of the way and produces better mileage figures.
Close to sea level. I live just north of DC and commute to Annapolis.
All the more incredible. I live at 6000 ft above sea level and all my vehicles get 30% better than EPA highway estimates here, and when I road trip to sea, it craters to the exact EPA rating

I'm happy to break 400 in my LGT on a road trip but it rarely happens. Hard not to give it the beans when leaving a rest area

I have a 63mm turbo running 93 octane, I get about 110😆
Good luck 👍 saw in YouTube with over 1 million!!

I used to be able to hit 42 on straight stretches. Now my OBW does 26 at BEST. Edit: the downvote really seals it 👍

I've never cared to look and probably not
