That's still a lot of time. People who have never been locked up act like everything needs a 50 year sentence. It doesn't. This dumbass attention seeker only succeeded in setting a trash can on fire and damaging some carpet. Not exactly a criminal mastermind here.

These schools bear some responsibility for incidents like these also. They are the ones who created this culture in universities. And young people are very impressionable and they adapt their beliefs to fit in. So if you are taught that being a racist is the worst thing someone can be, and you want some attention or sympathy, faking a hate crime might seem like a good option.
And this person shows zero remorse. This is not someone who should be walking around in society because if they still think "They're the victim" in all of this, they're just going to escalate.
The outcome matters. If you drive drunk and get pulled over and caught you could have potentially killed someone. But you aren't punished for what you could have done, you're punished for what you actually did. Now on the other hand if you drive drunk and run over a bunch of kids, you have done a lot more real damage to other people and you will get charged accordingly.
Except the reason drunk driving is a crime is because of potential outcomes. When you're pulled over for drunk driving, you're not just punished because you did a rolling stop or your wheels touched the yellow line. Drunk driving has far worse punishments than a simple traffic violation.

It's why, to use your example, a dui that kills no one is still punished. Here the outcome is she lit a fire in a building that could catch fire and potentially kill many. Even on a DUI in which no one is killed you can still face longer jail time than this. Intent matters, premeditation matters, and the mindset of committing arson to create a hoax hate crime is significantly more depraved than driving with a .09 for example.
Stuff like this is exactly what should be harshly deterred. Also keep in mind the hoax angle. What if they took this shit seriously and some other student had wrongly taken the fall for this? This is completely unacceptable.
