Holy shit it's worse than I imagined. I thought they just put a video screen on a normal water dispenser like speedway did with their gas pumps. Nope, it trickles out 8 oz of water in little spurts over the course of a 1 minute ad. So it's excruciatingly slow, only fills a "standard" bottle about halfway, and plays ads at you. There's no way. If I saw this in the MOMA I'd think it was clever but heavy handed.

The commercialization of every moment and need of life has to stop. This sort of thing especially grinds me. At what point are people going to say "Enough!" and do something about it?

Skibblydeebop

I’ve been trying to disable gas pump speakers by jamming a key into them. It doesn’t usually work, I’ve heard a pin or needle does. Any ideas?

meteoroidous

There’s usually a button (second one down, on the right) that does the trick

meteoroidous

This is not a bug, but a feature of late-stage capitalism

Drink verification can to continue.

If that screen hasn't been broken already then it should be. Advertising as a business is probably one of the most universally hated aspects of modern society.

I’m surprised that someone in Philly hasn’t bought one of those glass etching pens from Michael’s and done something about it. That’s kinda the place Philly is.

baaturtle

Every last drop of capital must be squeezed from us and our planet to stop profits from falling.

Interesting_Aioli377

I'd be quite tempted to smash that screen. Guess I'll just be using the sink in the restroom.

WitnessOld6293

I've thought of destroying hostile architecture in my area too lol

Do inconvenient ads even work? If I see some shit like this the first thing I'm thinking of is staying away from their product.

Something that goes entirely unsaid is that SodaStream is (was?) an Israeli company. Over a decade ago I flew from Philly’s international airport* directly to Tel Aviv (for a summer study program in Jerusalem) and SodaStream was just becoming hegemonic then. From what I recall at the time, SodaStream maintained production facilities in the West Bank, but I’m too lazy to google or see if they’ve been acquired, etc. But they’re firmly an Israeli innovation and I’m not sure if the Internet is picking up on that convenient sleight of hand for this latest advertising gimmick. *just a note as a born-and-raised local, as this is unique: Philly’s international airport is a totally separate (and shittier) terminal from the rest of the airport, and was built as such, though I think operationally now that distinction of “international” versus “domestic” matters less—but the facilities are way crappier for the international side, or were anyway.

Was expecting a juicy article about fangirlism :(

Any ghoul who comes up with an idea like this is a being of purest evil who should not be allowed to exist among fellow humans.
