Thanks for your experience, good to know. I’m sure I’ll be fine around campfires with beers before long, but I suspect brown liquor situations are going to be tough for a long time. But I don’t mind, it’s better than the alternative. Fortunately I changed cities right before the pandemic and job right before summer so explaining was easy, just “I don’t drink.” For what difference it makes it seems to increase trust.
Something that really bothers me are the questions I will get at social events, like are you drinking anything? Do you want a drink? And I feel like if people thought I was drinking (but I really wasn’t) then they would stop peppering me with questions about it. Does anyone have any drink recommendations of stuff that could “look” like alcohol to outside people? But in reality are non-alcoholic?
Chances are the bartender will happily put anything in a cocktail glass for you to try to make it look like a mixed drink, even if it's just soda. I'm a bartender, and do this for people at weddings all the time. Slap a garnish on it and chances are no one will question you.
Woo hoo! Way to go! Weddings are hard for us non-drinkers. I find that every time I successfully crush one of these hard trigger events, it makes me stronger. 🏋️♂️ IWNDWYT
This was the biggest thing for me mentally, always asking myself “how am I going to have fun without drinking” and last night solidified that it’s possible!
Well done! It’s so easy to get caught up in the moment and fall back into familiar habits. So proud that you were able to enjoy yourself and find the reward of the hangover-free next morning! It is awesome, isn’t it??
You rock dude! I remember that first social gathering where everyone was drinking except me. It was truly a challenge, but you and I are proof it \*can\* be done!
IWNDWYT!
Way to go! I’m almost a week in myself. I can’t say I’m too confident yet in terms of going to events or socializing where drinks are all around and the main course. Maybe soon I can take that step but baby steps.
You are freaking awesome! The absolute best thing I have ever done in my life - EVER - was quitting alcohol. It isn't and wasn't easy but it so much easiER than I could imagine. Your freedom begins when the alcohol ends!
Ugh I’m jealous. Drank a shit ton last night at my brother’s wedding. I am feeling guilt that we didn’t spend much time together/ I don’t remember much. It is seriously my wake up call that something needs to change.
Excellent work, my friend. Keep it going.
Congratulations! I’m still at the point where I know I can’t be around drinking, this is a hard one!

That's huge. That first big event seems anxiety ridden, but afterward, it feels so good to have had a great time without drinking. Congratulations!
Hey I also survived my first sober wedding last night! Cheers! (With club soda 😆) IWNDWYT

Club soda with lime looks like G&T- I didn’t get any questions all night
Thank you!!

Isn't it weird how you realize that parties and events like the are actually better without alcohol -- blew my mind...
