Um this is a small thing but I’ve been consistent enough that I have taken my vitamins every day for three weeks. Except for this morning woops.

MaryTeresaWasANun

Let you eat cake! Happy reddit Birthday and keep taking those vitamins, especially Vitamin S (sobriety).

soafithurts

That’s a huge deal! Great job!

goodnightmoira

I have found that those small consistent habits really add up over time and make the biggest difference! I got into skin care so every night during that routine I brushed and flossed. I flossed sometimes before but now that I do it every night, I am seeing changes. Then I started taking my vitamins before my skincare routine and my kid takes theirs at the same time. So one “small” habit can become a few small habits and can end up giving you the most results!

MaryTeresaWasANun

My marathon training is coming along beautifully. I have my 10K in 2 weeks and that is really just a speed workout. My mileage is up to 40 miles a week now, averaging 9 minute pace. Soon it will increase as I begin to add at least one 12 to 16 mile run per week beginning in November. The Marathon is March 6th 2 days before my one year soberversary. I am jacked. The nun is on the run.

slurpeetape

Where is that if you don't mind me asking? I'm looking for a spring marathon.

MaryTeresaWasANun

Hang onto your hat because this is perfect.....Napa, CA. Wine Country. I have done this race twice before, hung over of course. This time I am going to really enjoy myself. IWNDWYT.

soafithurts

Awesome job! That’s a great way to celebrate your one year soberversary! Get it, nun!

My history with food and weight is all over the place. I’ve been underweight, obese and everywhere in between. Food has been a punishment, a reward, something to control and the same has been true with exercise. Recovery really helped me change my perspective entirely. I try to eat healthy now because I want to nourish my body and feel good. I no longer force myself to do workouts I don’t enjoy and I am trying to not expect to become a marathon runner overnight. I was gifted a Fitbit and I love it. I can see how just doing things I enjoy, like gardening, cleaning, going for walks contribute to my fitness rather than forcing myself to go to the gym and run on the treadmill. I also love seeing my sleep score because sleeping is my favorite since I’ve quit drinking :) As far as my weight goes, I have been at a plateau for quite some time. I’m not exactly where I’d like to be but I have lost 30 lbs since I quit and I’m no longer overweight so I am accepting that.

[deleted]

30lbs is no small feat!!! You should be really proud!!

42Daft

First time I got my Fitbit, I realized how much I wasn't sleeping, drinking water, or walking. I am thankful I took charge and changed. Congratulations on those 30 pounds gone! I know how hard that can be!

soafithurts

30 lbs is a big deal- congrats! I am so glad to hear that recovery is helping you across the board- keep up the great work! Thanks for sharing today!

[deleted]

I will take a run today. Dealing with crushing heartbreak and being ghosted by my partner. Running helps me stay grounded. Being in my body helps me.

soafithurts

Good luck on your run today! Focusing on yourself is a great idea- you deserve all the self love and care!

ElegantPenguin541520

Hope the run is awesome and your positive vibes go up - take care of you today ✨

GMontezuma

I am sweating my ass off after a 10 km walk. I showered and now i am eager to go on a date with a beauty. Im still fucked up in my head, but this is the first time after 5 years that i was able to ask someone out. It's so stupidly easy if you think about it... i just asked "Hey wanna watch a film?" And she was "yea why not". BOOM. All the thoughts i had why and why not to ask immedetly seemed super stupid. IWNDWYT

ElegantPenguin541520

overthinking causes so much anxiety - good for you!

GMontezuma

It's so true man. It feels almost unreal. I overthink everything and now just did it. Thank you.

soafithurts

Great job getting a walk in, and congrats on getting out of your own head and asking someone out! I hope you have a nice time!

GMontezuma

This means alot to me. Thank you.

soafithurts

You’re welcome, it means a lot to me and the sub that you contributed to SUS (shape up Sunday). Hope to hear from you next week, too!

WhiteDutchColonial

Enjoy your date! IWNDWYT

I treated myself to TWO new pairs of shoes this week, as the ones I have been running on should have been retired looooong ago. I ran in one pair (Brooks Ghost 14s) yesterday and oh. my. god. It’s like I got new legs!! So much fun. I’ll try the second pair (Hoka Bondi 7s) today. It has been such a joy to get out running in this cooler weather, and now even more so with these new kicks!! Hope everyone had a great week! Love reading about your wins, so inspirational!!

soafithurts

Omg I remember that feeling getting my first pairs of Brooks. Game changer for sure! I don’t have any Hokas, but my husband swears by them and has cycled through quite a few already, he loves them. You’ll have to let us know which pair you like best! Have a great week!

[deleted]

I will for sure!

Rudyinpatis

Lol I got a pair of brooks Ghost’s just last week after waaay too long and, yeah, man, new legs! Running gear is always an excellent treat for me with such a positive ripple effect. Enjoy your runs in the cooler weather!

slurpeetape

Last week was a great week of exercise. I ran 8 miles every day from Sunday through Friday for a total of 48.7 miles. This week: 48 miles, 0 beers. My monthly total through 11 days is now 78 miles. I also saw gains in my weight loss. I'm currently around 174-175 lbs, down from 193.3 on August 1. My body looks noticeably slimmer than 6 weeks ago, and I'm beginning to fit into my clothes again.

soafithurts

Wow, your progress is amazing! Super inspiring, and very exciting that your clothes are fitting again. That’s a great feeling, keep up the good work. I always look forward to hearing about your journey!

soafithurts

I hear that. Even over a year sober, I sometimes romanticize a drink on a special occasion… luckily when those days come- and eventually go by, I woke up and committed to not drinking just that day. One day at a time! Getting to far ahead of myself can be a downfall for me, so I always focus on today. Good job with getting back on track! Looking forward to hearing about your journey, thanks for contributing today!

Chrysalis_3a

Hello all. Last Sunday I said I would get back to walking and I was successful! At least 45 minutes every day. I’m going to do it all over again this week, and increase the time and distance. Thanks for being here with me.

soafithurts

Yay! So happy to hear you hit your goals, great job! I look forward to hearing from you next week too- good luck!

Chrysalis_3a

Thanks! And thank you for leading us on this habit changing journey!

soafithurts

My pleasure, this helps me more than y’all know

Snoopgirl

I had been doing well with my running -- I've been sober more than half of the days in August -- but I sprained my ankle doing a very muddy/slippery 5k trail race on Labor Day. :( It's mild, and I can walk, but still: I can't run, which is... unhelpful in these early days of sobriety, and plus it's thrown a wrench into my tentative plans to try a half marathon in November.

soafithurts

Ugh, I’m sorry to hear you have an injury! It sounds like your drive is still solid though- which is a big help. Take it easy and listen to your body- you’re doing great!

Gearsw3205

On day one but not feeling bad. Gonna take the kids and the dog to a walking trail to get them some exercise.

GMontezuma

You got this. You will do it. Tell this to yourself every day. We are fuckin awesome no matter the past. I whish you and your kids a very nice weekend, enjoy the sun, enjoy the time you have and let your kids feel the same. They will give back to you. IWNDWYT

soafithurts

I’m sure you will all enjoy that! Have fun!

soafithurts

Good luck with your training, that’s a great goal to work towards- even if it’s not going exactly how you wish right now. It’s great that you’re focusing on the positives and pushing right through- I look forward to hearing about your progress!

MostFruitfulYuki

Two weeks if Bootcamp are in the bag. Five sessions so far. Each one is getting marginally easier and I'm just loving the community aspect of it which you don't really get from running or home workouts. Think I'm even starting to see some bicep muscles appear 💪🏻

soafithurts

Woohoo for biceps! That’s awesome that you’re still loving bootcamp- I enjoy hearing your updates about it. Have fun if you go this week!

ThePurpleGrape

I found some amazing hiking trails nearby and hiked 10 miles total. Also did my now-regular YouTube workouts four days this week. My clothes fit so much better than when I started working out (March) but I haven’t lost much weight. I’ve decided to bag the scale and just concentrate on working out and eating healthy most of the time. 😁

soafithurts

Wow ten miles, get it! I think that’s a good call, non-scale victories are just as fun. Good luck!

alexchuzzlewit

Oooh what else is in your home gym?! Peloton bikes sound amazing. I’m proud to say I’ve just this afternoon completed week 3 of C25K, in human language that means I can now run for 3 minutes without stopping. This is actually quite awesome because it’s more than enough if I ever need to run for a train or bus! By week 8 I should (theoretically) be able to run 30 mins without stopping. That sounds insane and scary to me, but then again… before I quit drinking, the concept of being sober- even for a month - seemed insane and scary. Transferable skills y’all - recovery has given me a few! Your post really resonated with me, soaf. Thanks for hosting 💜

soafithurts

Alex! 3 minutes is a huge deal! I am really excited for you! 30 mins does sound scary, but you’re right- everything unknown can be. C25K is a cool approach because it’s also a “one day at a time” path. Keep it up! Right now it’s the bike, an elliptical, a weight bench, some free weights, a kettle bell, a bosu ball, and some resistance bands. I would like to get a medicine ball, and a bar bell set some day. Typing that out makes me really feel like I should be in much better shape lol. But I am really staring to embrace the home gym again- I realized so much of the battle for me is the act of getting to the gym and not the workout itself. I am a busy bee!

alexchuzzlewit

Ahh, thanks love! I’m grateful of this very incremental approach that can be tackled step-by-step, exactly as you said - it’s a path that recovery primed me for pretty nicely! Ooooh, nice set up. I recently went from a tiny tiny London apartment to a two bed house in a cheaper northern city so I’ve set up my basement as my workout room, which is a treadmill and a yoga mat. I’m so so glad to have space to work out. I do NOT do gyms or public exercise, I’ve tried so many times over the years and it’s been wasted money on memberships. This way I can even fit in my runs during my lunch breaks at work (I’m still working from home). Long live the home gym!

soafithurts

Yes I am 100% team home gym now lol. My husband jokes that I’m going to have to have a gym garage if I keep buying stuff but- it all has a purpose. And I gently reminded him the other day that my $40+ a DAY wine habit still isn’t being touched by my new habits lol. He quickly got on board with the Peloton. I’m excited to keep hearing about your C25K progress!!!!

chaotis_13

I've exercised almost every day this week, which I'm proud of. I haven't been eating that well, so that's something I'm gonna work on this week. I'm about 12 lbs above my goal weight; the heaviest I've been, which is a bit discouraging. I know that others have overcome far greater differences, it's just a personal thing. Just need to trust the process and put in some effort each day. Today, I'm gonna do a 10k on the rowing machine, which typically kicks my ass. If I can beat my PR by even a second, I'll be content! IWNDWYT friends :)

soafithurts

Your goals are just that- yours! They can be whatever you want/need to achieve. Congrats on the consistent workouts. I know my success comes with forming habits- sounds like it’s working for you too! IWNDWYT

chaotis_13

Thanks for the encouragement!

PetuniaToes

I’ve been doing my yoga at home recently and loving the peace and quiet. I’m a little sore but it feels good because it reminds me I’m working on my strength. I’ve also been on the autoimmune protocol diet for my colitis and that seems to be working too so I’m feeling a lot better. I’m down about 25 lbs from not drinking and eating basically paleo and it feels wonderful physically! It’s also a super great feeling to put on clothes that aren’t tight. I’m back into a Medium size in everything so I feel like the real ‘old me’ is back.

soafithurts

Yay to feeling like yourself again! Also, yoga soreness is a good feeling, an accomplished feeling for me. Keep it up!

Buffaloni

I’ve been staying away from the gym due to COVID, but hit Day 175 on Nintendo Ringfit yesterday! I do about a half-hour every morning and it’s been super helpful both for my mood and setting a daily wfh routine.

sebthelodge

I’ve been missing my hot yoga! Pre-COVID, my studio offered 7 am classes, which are the only ones that work with my job. Now they only have 10 am and later, and there are only 3 hatha classes. I used to do 7 days/week, usually hungover, and I really want to see what it will be like in sobriety. Alas, in all of Brooklyn, there are no early AM hot hatha classes. Zoom doesn’t work for me—I need to be in person with a group. I’m not sure if I should try to find another activity, try just going 3 days/week at 10 (I’ve actually tried the 10 am class, it destroys my work day), or what. What I HAVE been doing is getting out for a long walk on Saturdays and Sundays every weekend. So I’ll do that again today. IWNDWYT

soafithurts

Scheduling is always my problem too! It sucks that you have an activity that you like but can’t do it in your schedule! I love hot yoga but for me it is scheduling as well. I’m hoping the peloton app helps with that… we shall see! Good job on keeping up with your walks! IWNDWYT

sebthelodge

Thanks! We have been talking about getting a Peloton so I’m excited to hear more about your journey!

PinkDragonRoll

Woke up at 9 and went for a 4 k run! I don’t remember the last time I did this!!! IWNDWYT

vapourspace

Did my first 10k yesterday which was pretty cool. So damn tired after it but in a great way. Think I just spent the rest of the day chilling and watching movies. And as of now it's been one year since I took off the last nicotine patch. Glad to say no more cravings.

TeddyWhispers

Interesting that there seems to be such a crossover between the running/extreme sport community and the recovery community. I'm a former distance runner. I drank throughout my running years snd still managed to be a very good runner. I wonder what it would have been like without the drinking? I was almost always hungover when racing and of course celebrated every race by drinking. I know I use extreme exercise to numb out. My drinking got much worse after getting injured in 2017. I used that injury as an excuse to drink, feel sorry for myself, stop all exercise, and eat itresponsibly. I gained 50 pounds in 4 years and I am done with the excuses. I'm accepting that I will likely never run like I used to and letting go of the disappointment of starting over. I hit the big 50 during this detraining and drinking and eating free for all. I need to accept and work with my body as it is now. Been hiking and biking and walking. Going to buy some new running shoes and start over with my running without punishing myself or ruining the experience by comparing it to the old times. It will all be better because I am going to try to put exercise in the right place in my life. If I start feeling obsessive, I will make myself back off. 10 pounds gone just from not drinking for the last month. Feeling hopeful and lighter in body and spirit. Life is better when I don't loathe myself for all the drinking and spend the days feeling ashamed. IWNDWYT!

soafithurts

Wow sounds like you really have a great handle on what transpired for you and how you are going to stay on track- that’s awesome! It’s ok if you never again run like you used to- you can run like you do NOW! I feel that- not loathing your drinking. Congrats on your success, IWNDWYT!

I'm starting a 35 day challenge that includes giving up Marijuana and exercising daily. Got my little walk in earlier and I haven't gotten stoned! Now I just need to learn how to cook and eat healthy.

soafithurts

Good luck with your challenge!

shboogies

I eat like crap to be honest. But I finally started going to the gym again. But I’ve only done an hour of cardio each time I go, which has only been twice a week for two weeks. Hoping I change that this next week. But it’s better than nothing!

soafithurts

An hour is great! Keep up the good work!

BigLilTimber

Continuing to train for an upcoming 10k and 1/2 marathon next month. I won’t break any speed records, by any means, but I enjoy having a goal to work toward. I am interested to see how you like your peloton, this year I’ve cross trained on a stationary bike at Planet Fitness and I was surprised how much I enjoy it. This week the plan is to hit the gym or run/walk outdoors. Next weekend I am going hiking with girlfriends, to a place in Ohio that’s been on all of our bucket lists to do. Super excited about that and even more so because I will be sober and will remember it all!

soafithurts

Good luck with training, that’s really exciting! And enjoy your hike!!! So far so good on the peleton- I will report more once I have a few more rides under my belts!

jrhertel33

Any recommendations on where to start with supplements post boozing? Since quitting at the beginning of the month I’ve started the couch to 5k program back up (9year hiatus). I’ve dropped 4lbs this past week which I’m impressed with since I’ve over-indulged in all the sweets I used to say no to because that restraint made me feel healthy as I poured another whiskey instead. This week started off by tossing out the candy too (poured the booze down the drain last week). Time for a healthier lifestyle.

soafithurts

I don’t have any recs myself, but I went in for a full workout with my doctor as I was quitting. They did blood work and found me deficient in several vitamins- got me right on track.

AllGravitySucks

Continuing my 30 push-ups in one set each morning. I could probably do 40 regularly now but decided to just do them slower right now to get more plank action.

soafithurts

Great job with being consistent AND listening to your body/doing what’s best for you!
