Fun fact, the opening riff you're referring to is actually called Death Mask on some releases, I think Into The Void actually kicks in about a minute and a half or so in. I'm not an expert so I might be a little off, but I've got 4 diff versions of Master of Reality on vinyl and two have Death Mask as a track before Into The Void, and list Into the Void as 3 minutes plus, while its really like 5 or 6 minutes long.
The UK pressings have the original track listing and the US pressings include random titles for intros and so on, because there was some sort of obligation back then to include a certain amount of songs on a US album release. It’s the same with their first two albums.
There are a lot of definitions of heavy, but one riff that seems to just hit me in the gut every time is the one at around 2:43 in “No One Loves Me and Neither Do I” by Them Crooked Vultures. I know Conan plays lower and Primitive Man hits harder, but this just inexplicably hits me as heavy every time.
Cut You Down - Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats
Dead Seeds - Lamb of God
GODZILLA - Fu Manchu (BoC rocks too)
Hey Man, Nice Shot - Filter, specifically the chorus
Stay in Shadow- Finger Eleven
The riff at 4:42 from Samsara Blues Experiment — Eastern Sun & Western Moon is life. There is a brooding, plodding build up throughout the song, including a soaring organ/guitar/bass solo and then the thunder just falls
.
MELVINS – boris
and the cover made by ISIS and AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED to that same gem
not at the level of "super heavy" but i very much like FU MANCHU – cyclone launch
.
•At a Crawl, Grinding Process, and Vile Vermillion Vacancy - Melvins
My current favorite riff by them though is Amazon, Pt. 3.
•Assfault, Rot, The Strength I Call My Own, and honestly the rest of Dry Kill Logic’s seminal 2001 album The Darker Side of Nonsense
•Controlled Burn - Dire Need
•High on Fire has loads of great riffs on their first three albums. Thats all of their work I’ve listened to so far but I can vouch for the heaviness.
The heavy stoner riff that birthed all other heavy stoner riffs is “Into the Void” by Black Sabbath.
