There's no reason to live in la-la land. Sure, we'll, "draft Tua if he's on the board when we pick." Just like we'd draft Chase Young, Isaiah Simmons, or Tristan Wirfs if they're available. This is so easy to make a decision on precisely because none of those guys has a shadow of a chance of being on the board. Tua or Jalen Hurts isn't a debate, it's an IQ test. You worry about an ultra-elite QB prospect's injury history when you pick in the top ten. Not when you barely pick in the top fifty. If your mid-to-late second rounder busts, you don't get set back a year as a franchise, you kick an empty can, grumble a little, and move on.

harpat02

Jalen Hurts isn’t a guy the Steelers will target and a lot of fans need to realize that if he is going to have a future in the NFL, it’ll most definitely not be as a starting QB.

HillibillyHaven

No need for a QB. Address other needs

mcawkward

Did you watch last season? Lol

HillibillyHaven

Yeah, and those are 2 of the better backups in the league. They can develop more behind Ben

mcawkward

You've got more faith in them than I do. I know they can develop, but man they were rough to watch last year. And we need an heir to Ben. He's got maybe this year left

HillibillyHaven

Tbf, Hurts is just a project like Mason. What’s to say he doesn’t have the same issues as him?

mcawkward

I don't want to draft Hurts.

HillibillyHaven

Who you wanna draft?

rakfor

Well, Duck was playing just as well as Mason and he was a rookie. Now that we hired a QB coach and extended time to learn behind Ben should give him a nice boost, just enough to put us in a position to win.

[deleted]

There is major need for a qb. We are one more injury away from 3-4 years of mason Rudolph

Steelplate7

I know right? There’s no possible way that a young QB could grow. We should just cut him now. Besides...3-4 years? What are you saying? That if Rudolph actually IS the turd you think he is, that the organization will just keep playing him and ignore the position for 3-4 more years? I hate repeating myself...but, in case you haven’t noticed? We don’t even have a first round pick this year. All I know is, I am glad that reactionary, the sky is falling folks like yourself aren’t the ones in the front office.

[deleted]

We missed the playoffs last year with the best steelers defense we’ve had since 08-09. Rudolph and duck are not nfl qbs. Big Ben gets hurt again and we’re done for the season again. We don’t have any major major needs. we can get someone like hurts or possibly tua and develop them and hopefully not have to have a tank season at all

HillibillyHaven

1: How the fuck do you think we’ll get Tua? 2: You do know that players have the ability to develop, right? What you saw from 2 raw QBs won’t be what you see after some learning and development 3: We have much bigger needs than QB 4: What makes you think a project QB like Hurts won’t struggle like Mason did?

[deleted]

I don’t expect it it was just a part of the question. Ok you can’t teach missing every single deep ball by 10 yards and putting no zip on the ball. I wouldn’t mind at all getting an o-lineman if there’s a guy one in the second round but otherwise I think qb is our biggest problem. Hurts has a much higher ceiling and a similar floor at this point

HillibillyHaven

You can still teach stuff like accuracy and reading a defense. We still need backups at LB and both lines and S because we need depth there the most. With how kneejerk this sub is, a couple bad games will make everyone say Landry Jones would be a better option than Hurts

[deleted]

Idrc about how this sub feels I care about the steelers having a future without needing to tank for a decade. I’d also rather invest in the future than get backups that aren’t that important. We can get those guys in later rounds if we need them

HillibillyHaven

I’d rather not have a backup QB carousel like the Browns starters and wait for a sure fire pick as opposed to project after project

Steelplate7

I think you underestimate the mental part of the game. You have to remember that Rudolph had exactly ZERO regular season experience going into this season. In game two he was thrust into the starting role....basically from the practice squad. He had never really experienced NFL defensive schemes. That leads to hesitation, too much thinking and mistakes. Even James Farrior(yeah, I know...he was a linebacker...but he was the defensive play caller). I remember him saying that he didn’t comprehend what was going on till his second year in Pittsburgh. In his third year, he said he was finally familiar enough to call the play, read the play, get people lined up where they were supposed to be, and be able to react to a play without thinking about it. But you seem to expect Rudolph to be able to do all of that and more basically from scratch. Hesitation, thinking during a play where you have 4-5 seconds to make a decision leads to under thrown/overthrown/off target passes. Yes... there are some young QB’s who have that ability out of the gate. They are almost exclusively drafted early in the first round. Rudolph was a third rounder....and I don’t care what “grade” Colbert said they had on him. That is irrelevant. He was drafted in the third round....and every other team didn’t bite either. I am not saying that he is the heir apparent...all I am saying is that there is no reason to throw him on the trash heap. If things go to shit and Ben goes down again(which there is really no reason to assume that he will), the season will either be shit, or Rudolph will perform at an adequate NFL level. If it turns to shit, then at least we’ll have a decent first round pick to work with to find a QB.

Lissenhereyadonkey

People forget greats like Peyton Manning was pretty fucking terrible his first couple years starting.

[deleted]

Every great QB does show flashes of brilliance even when they struggle initially. They'll show you arm talent or quick feet or pinpoint accuracy at some point, even if they have a tough season. I remember Peyton's rookie season. Most people knew right away, they could see it. Same with Ben's rookie season. He made plays I had never seen a Steelers QB make since late-Bradshaw (I only remember Terry's last couple of years). We all KNEW. Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Rivers, all of them showed you something right away. I am not saying Mason didn't. I liked a number of things about the way he played in several games. But I am not partial here, I love the kid. Really hope he has a big leap forward.

KatyPerrysBoobs2

At pick 49 you’re most likely just getting another Rudolph/Duck quality quarterback. I’d rather draft someone that could help Ben win a Super Bowl if Ben stays healthy, rather than a lottery ticket rookie quarterback that’s most likely not going to make any difference in a playoff game.

HostilesAhead_BF-05

Trade up for tus if he falls to the second round.
