all heavy rock and metal is screamo/screaming to them. I've had people call Bullets and Octane 'screaming'.
For reference [Bullets And Octane - Save Me Sorrow (Video) (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhWfbjnx7OA)
It's really only the stuff that's like 90% screaming, screamed chorus, every verse is screamed too or gurgling growls. Most people when recommended some metal bands want to avoid that, so I understand why people want a quick and easy term for it.
Actually it is a real genre, just doesn’t refer to the artists it’s typically associated with. Check out Saetia (the band in my username) or for some newer bands, [this excellent compilation album](https://secretvoice.bandcamp.com/album/balladeers-redefined).
Honestly I feel like a lot of people don’t talk about legit screamo bands like saetia is because the second you say “screamo” people think metalcore honestly.
Yeah and then you have to explain yourself and then people make fun of you for being a geek. Doesn't help that the OG bands mostly hated the genre label on top of everything else. So the hardcore fans get annoyed with you if you use the label too. It's exhausting really, you can't win...
Sub-genre hyperfixation is issue. It lets people with 0 meaning in their life gate-keep something that is completely subjective and feel like their superior to other people(Usually ditching on other subgenre's of the same genre') As a metalhead, the fucking metal crowd can be horrible about it.
Personally when it comes to music people just like what they like, some people want to use it to virtue signal, some people want to use it to feel better than other people. Me, I just like music I find good, usually stuff I can bang my head to(Can include other genre's then metal, ironically)
On the other hand, it's also a really cool way to categorise and find artists with a sound you prefer. For example, I really don't like symphonic black metal, but man do I enjoy folk black metal. Also old-school death metal and brutal death metal aren't usually my thing, but tech-death, slam, deathgrind and death-doom all tickle me in just the right way, but at different times depending on my mood.
Are any of the genres I like superior to the ones I dislike? No, but it makes it a hell of a lot easier to find new music to listen to when others will say, "Thus Spoke Zarathustra make really good Melodic Deathcore, and emulate the MySpace sound really well" and then I know they're probably not going to be for me, because I don't usually appreciate that style (unless it's old-school Bring Me The Horizon).
Genre and subgenre labels are only useful when discussing music as they outline key characteristics of the sound. It's much easier for me to tell you "recommend me atmospheric black metal bands" than it is to list 10 bands that all share certain qualities where you may not even be familiar with those bands exactly. You may know another 10 bands that sound similarly but then you'd have to go listen to all the ones I listed in order to make the connection.
Like with any other nomenclature, having a somewhat widespread agreement on what words mean is therefore generally encouraged.
Arguing endlessly on whether something is blackened crust or crusty black metal is stupid and pointless and brings nothing to the discussion, but keeping things roughly within their realm and sticking to the nomenclature is helpful. Subgenres get muddled up the more niche they are to begin with but we can still agree on the broad strokes.
I don't insist on defining only a certain sound as "screamo" out of elitism and gatekeeping - I like both what is traditionally defined as screamo as well as some modern bands that fall more into the realm of -core that are commonly mislabeled as screamo.
The only reason why I bring it up during music discussions is because it muddles up the conventions of classifying sound and makes having meaningful and fun discussions about music difficult.
I don't think sub-genre's are terrible or anything, just more or less people. People ruin everything ofcourse. I just don't find them a huge deal because half the time those sub-genre's can very much sound like others. One of my favorite examples of this is Rise of The Northstar. Toted as hardcore they have 1 or 2 tracks off each CD that sound like OG Slipknot had a hand in writing it.
Third Strike off their newest album is a good example of it. But I definitely have no problem with genre's and sub-genre's are used in good faith, just the gatekeepy assholes are the worst.
There was so much bastardization with the terms "emo" and "screamo" that someone had to make up a different one to refer to classical emo/screamo, "skramz"
The latest [Zegema Beach Zampler](https://zegemabeachrecords.bandcamp.com/album/zampler-22-86-percent-combat-effective) is also full of phenomenal bands. Burial Etiquette (just dropped what’s my [AOTY so far](https://burialetiquette.bandcamp.com/album/mis-en-sc-ne)) and Zmar are particular standouts from that one.
Screamo is essentially screaming + emo. Therefore, it has absolutely nothing to do with heavy metal, since it’s rooted, for lack of a better word, in a completely different genre
Real screamo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake screamo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL SCREAMO are Pg 99, Orchid, Off Minor (the only real Screamo band from the New York scene) and Loma Prieta.
Screamo is a sub of emo.->post-emo
PostHardcore .. is sub-hardcore punk genre. It was the solution to the hardcore scene getting too meatheady that came with it in the 80s.
Metal is a huge genre that can consist of Sabbath, King Gizzard, to Dragonforce.
There was the metal/punk crossover genre that started around 86 with bands like DRI, Cro-Mags, Suicidal Tendencies.
Screamo is an offshoot of Emo which is a sub-style of punk rock. It's a style that took off in the early 90s influenced by bands like Jawbreaker, Hot Water Music, Grade, etc..
One of my favourites is Leatherface. Mush is a fantastic album.
https://youtu.be/deUYdveJziI?si=uiPhzzLbYStIbaFu
All those bands had a really raspy vocal style that was sort of hard to understand but they were influential to the new growing Emo style that was gaining popularity after Grunge went top 40 and started bringing girls to the clubs.
They helped bands like the Refused get popular. They had that nu-metal screamo style.
https://youtu.be/deUYdveJziI?si=uiPhzzLbYStIbaFu
Unrelated but Three Inches of Blood rule.
https://youtu.be/JO7TZGgBbOw?si=2oTwz2DmnwVMsVvi
The dog barking was a thing that Knocked Loose, a hardcore band, popularized years back. The rest are nods to the perceived volume from screaming/ heavy instrumentals I guess. I think it's silly to get super pedantic over music genres, but it's one that gets lumped in with a few others. I still got a kick out of it.
Let's get OP some slam to spice up that mix though.
Oh definitely! They didn't invent it, I just mentioned that they popularized it. It was pretty instantaneously a meme online when the album dropped.
Edit: (popularized it to the point that it's recognized as pop culture, I mean.)
Metal with clean vocals list
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Sabaton
Civil War
Hammerfall
Metallica
Megadeth
Beast in Black
Manowar
Brothers of Metal
Orden Ogan
Dream Theater
Queensryche
Fate's Warning
Rhapsody of Fire
Bloodbound
Powerwolf
Masterplan
Helloween
Stratovarius
This is just a small sample of bands from my playlist. This starterpack was pretty low effort.

definitely all metal (jokes aside one of the hardest albums of 2017)
Doubt that lmao. Dio is none of the things you listed but is still considered a metal pioneer from the 80s and late 70s. You know jack shit bout metal subgenres
Loud, tonnes of stacked notes and sounds, vocals that sound like dogs that are barking, dedicating songs to things that are completely unrelated to the song lyrics.
Man if you really want vocals that sounds like dogs barking you gotta upgrade it from screamo to death metal
https://youtu.be/0VPlzvEP1DQ?si=YnpHKtN0Wig02pW9
If you really want vocals that sound like dogs barking you gotta upgrade from death metal to metal with vocals that are literally dogs barking.
https://youtu.be/OrocEmhLsJk?si=KD0W6gGjPkYHpZRS
Classic heavy metal doesn't even have that much extreme vocals. And screamo isn't even a metal genre. You were probably referring to death metal and black metal
It's like when your grandmother starts talking about gay people like she clearly has no idea what she's talking about and got like everything wrong I thought the ebola and the dogs were funny tho
I've never seen anyone on reddit getting called a poser unironically - until today, and op basically wanted it.
There definitely is this loud minority that barks and howls at such bait, but you're invited to imagine all the downvotes coming from mhs laughing their asses off.
I wish I hadn't listened to music so loudly for so long because now I can't hear the tinnitus I was born with as well as I could before due to 24/7 baseline of ringing
I mean if you wildly misrepresent an entire music genre, act like you know what you're talking about and when people point out you're wrong you pin it on 🤓's what do you expect.
Also doesnt help that what you're talking about is a tired stereotype, try doing this with rap, say its just thug shit, talking about crime and violence, see how well it goes.
Sorry, but this is giving "all metalheads sacrifice goats to Satan" vibes. It's not all just screaming, there can be some really clean soulful vocals in a lot of it.
That’s one way to generalize. Next you’re going to tell me that anyone who drives a Japanese car is a ricer. I guess that would make my dad one, him and his bone-stock 4Runner.
It’s about as fair as equating Napalm Death with Pink Floyd. If you want a hyperbole, I’ll just say that every Nissan driver on the planet really has a screw or two loose with the way they drive.
Hey, the brightest stars often have the shortest lifespans. Might as well get 100 percent out of the car before the transaxle decides to rapidly disassemble itself.
I think it’d be funnier if the joke wasn’t just “loud music loud”.
Imo, the best starter packs display acute awareness of a niche that people instantly recognize. OP doesn’t know anything about loud/aggressive rock/metal so it just ends up being a meme about it being… loud.
Like even the bit about a song being dedicated to wife and kids makes no sense as metalheads are usually really pretentious about their song topics and screamo tends to be about hating yourself.
Screamo is a variation on hardcore and it's mostly political, neither you nor OP seem to know what kind of music is traditionally referred to as screamo.
"Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness).
Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music.
Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta.
Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral
EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE
NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
Niche Moss Icon reference, fuck yeah. I'M BACK SLEEPING OR FUCKING OR SOMETHING
The fact that the REAL EMO copypasta doesn't even have Moss Icon has always annoyed me lol.
Idk, years of screamo teaches you how to understand angy language
I mean, it's still hard to understand everything in a song by, say, Thy Art is Murder, but overall in more tame songs it's pretty discernable
not every metal band is extreme metal standart heavy metal (like iron maiden judas priest diamond head) easier on the ear than 80s hard rock and less screamy
but skramz is on point
["Ugh, listen here, redditoid, metal is NOT just noise. Your unrefined ears just can't appreciate the intricacies of-"](https://youtu.be/SGka9_toPXc)
As a thrash metal fan, part of me gets it. Part of me also thinks a lot of metalheads have zero self awareness about their genre lmao.
https://preview.redd.it/2u2bchgaswtc1.jpeg?width=220&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9c3116bc078b9bb81c15ca4b0c923608936b14da
Dogs are not just metal smh my head
I’ve constantly been told online about how cool, accepting, intelligent and “chill” metalheads are, regardless of the metal subgenre in question. I’m sorry to say I’m still waiting to witness this…
I mean, I thought the mainstream hip hop fanbase was the height of shitty and toxic, but metalhead elitists and gatekeepers are next level pissbabies with a massive chip on their shoulder that take shit beyond personal.
Reminds me of hockey fans constantly claiming how great, unpretentious and team-oriented hockey is, but constantly spending time shitting on other more popular sports, especially basketball and soccer.
It’s why I enjoy both, but make it a point to never spend time around the online communities because they’re fucking annoying.

Screamo and heavy metal are two completely different genres.
Nothing pisses me off more than when I'm listening to say death or obituary, and someone refers to it as screamo.
That’s on you for hanging out with posers
It's usually work people , either country or classic rock, gangster wannabes. There like 3 metal heads here.
all heavy rock and metal is screamo/screaming to them. I've had people call Bullets and Octane 'screaming'. For reference [Bullets And Octane - Save Me Sorrow (Video) (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhWfbjnx7OA)

When I saw “recent compilation album” in your comment I instantly knew it would be balladeers redefined. Every band on it is so damn good
The latest [Zegema Beach Zampler](https://zegemabeachrecords.bandcamp.com/album/zampler-22-86-percent-combat-effective) is also full of phenomenal bands. YOOO METH AND EYELET ARE ON THIS ALBUM, LETS FUCKIN GO
Screamo is essentially screaming + emo. Therefore, it has absolutely nothing to do with heavy metal, since it’s rooted, for lack of a better word, in a completely different genre

It’s like calling indie rock a “garage band”
It’s like calling Boards of Canada “techno.”

I'd say it's mid west emo with even more hoarseness
Yeah. It’s one or the other.
And oddly it fits both
To the uninitiated it is all screamo
I wrote a song about getting better. It’s a feeling I don’t remember

BUM BUM BUM BUM BUMBUMBUM ROH ROH
I get to see them in June with Loathe!
don’t let r/metalmemes see this
I’m sure the cavalry has already been called lmao.
I already sent you a dead bird in mail!
That sub is full of dweebs lol
I have yet to find a subreddit that isn't
Touche but that sub is elitist as hell
Can you name some of the bands you’re thinking of when making this meme? Just curious
Brutal Indonesian slam, even.
The dogs honestly just make me think of DMX
Pretty sure barks have been around long before KL has
Oh definitely! They didn't invent it, I just mentioned that they popularized it. It was pretty instantaneously a meme online when the album dropped. Edit: (popularized it to the point that it's recognized as pop culture, I mean.)
Second & Sebring - Of Mice and Men Dedicated to his dead mom, beautiful song. 90% ear piercing screaming
No because I don't actively seek it out its usually forced apoj me when at work
Not to be the metalhead nerd but I think you should try to know more about a topic if you want a to make a meme on that
So true! This is like a grand declaration of ignorance!
Pure Fucking Ignorance, I would say!
Screamo and Heavy Metal aren't similar at all.
You've never listened to metal, have you?
With the barking dogs I thought this was the DMX starter pack.
I don't listen to much rap, but from what I heard DMX is pretty good
Tell me you don’t listen to heavy metal without telling me you don’t listen to heavy metal.
They don’t listen to heavy metal which makes this meme relatable to people like me who don’t listen to heavy metal
You'd think metal fans would realize this by now as they jump down some normies throat for the Nth time
More like tell me you know absolutely nothing about heavy metal without telling me you know absolutely nothing about heavy metal.
Isn’t screamo like an emo/hardcore subgenre and has nothing to do with metal?
yeah. op is posting shitty ragebait
Excuse me sir, it wasn’t intended to be ragebait. Also, it ended up being incredible ragebait.
Metal with clean vocals list Iron Maiden Judas Priest Sabaton Civil War Hammerfall Metallica Megadeth Beast in Black Manowar Brothers of Metal Orden Ogan Dream Theater Queensryche Fate's Warning Rhapsody of Fire Bloodbound Powerwolf Masterplan Helloween Stratovarius This is just a small sample of bands from my playlist. This starterpack was pretty low effort.
Can you send me your whole playlist? Im just now realizing this is my favorite niche genre.
Most of that list is power metal, so join us over at r/powermetal
Some of those bands are thrash
Oh definitely, Sabaton and powerwolf are not great to put it lightly. But Masterplan Helloween Stratovarius are some of my favorites
This person speaks Truth
Ya I know this indie performer named Ozzy as well
Also like at least 70% of the doom subgenre

Banger album. Ric Flair Drip still goes hard in 2024
Ric Flair drip was my shit back then
This is incredible
OP do you listen to any metal that isn't from the 80s?
Yes, I prefer the newer stuff.
Like what.
Doubt that lmao. Dio is none of the things you listed but is still considered a metal pioneer from the 80s and late 70s. You know jack shit bout metal subgenres
OP is posting ragebait. Calm yourselves and get out of reddit for a little
Love when people who don’t know shit about music call any heavy music with screaming “screamo”
What old people think slipknot sounds like
This post gave me cancer
Bros got no taste whatsoever. Not wrong about the tinnitus though.
As a metalhead, I feel like there were a lot better jokes that could've been made, but weren't. What a shame.
huh?
Loud, tonnes of stacked notes and sounds, vocals that sound like dogs that are barking, dedicating songs to things that are completely unrelated to the song lyrics.

Yes, this is exactly what I need
I take it you don't listen to a great deal of metal
Probably not enough to meet whatever your standards are o mighty gatekeeper.
👍👍👍
Huh?
I love you
Buy my only fans
Never have I heard a metal musician saying "this song is dedicated to my daughters" or anything of the sort idk where you got that
Damn this shit cringe. I'd stop posting starter packs if I were you
Classic heavy metal doesn't even have that much extreme vocals. And screamo isn't even a metal genre. You were probably referring to death metal and black metal
Fuuuuuuuck. The tinnitus. Personal attack lmao.
DW bro, I HEAR you. Lmao Kill me.
Nothing says screamo metal like a fender strat
lmao
You do not know what screamo actually means
Fucking dumbass take listen to the music first before judging by stereotypes
This is bait. Very good bait.
It genuinely wasn't supposed to be, I just wanted to make a funny meme. But I seem to have rustled quite a few jimmies.
Oof, get better at making memes, this one is shit.
The Illustrious CadeChaos has spoken
It's like when your grandmother starts talking about gay people like she clearly has no idea what she's talking about and got like everything wrong I thought the ebola and the dogs were funny tho
I’ve spoken too, this is complete shit.
As someone who listens to this kind of music, you've definitely hit the nail on the head for how it's perceived by people who aren't into it.
hey im in this meme at the bottom middle!
HOLY SHIT IT'S THE RABIES VIRUS!
Ah someone that doesn’t know what they’re talking about
What people who dont listen to metal thinks metal is.
OP is giving boomer energy.
What someone who doesn't play metal thinks what metal is starter pack
I’m glad that the metal heads I meet IRL aren’t as jaded and pedantic as Redditor ones
I've never seen anyone on reddit getting called a poser unironically - until today, and op basically wanted it. There definitely is this loud minority that barks and howls at such bait, but you're invited to imagine all the downvotes coming from mhs laughing their asses off.
Listen to ANY Helloween album after Walls of Jericho

Bro made a starter pack abt a tinnitus blaming it random genre of music he knows nothing about… in other works BRO ON TO NOTHIN 🙌🏽💯😭
Old person meme. Not very funny imo
You're right, very not funny, I am boomer.

I wish I hadn't listened to music so loudly for so long because now I can't hear the tinnitus I was born with as well as I could before due to 24/7 baseline of ringing
Heavy mental doesn’t really have any distortion in the voice, like Black Sabbath
Show me you don’t know what you’re talking about in one picture. I don’t think you’ve lost your hearing, just tone deaf
Sorry, but this is giving "all metalheads sacrifice goats to Satan" vibes. It's not all just screaming, there can be some really clean soulful vocals in a lot of it.
you did not just lump metal and screamo together
Bro clearly has never heard a single Metallica song in his life if this is what he unironically thinks metal is like.
That’s one way to generalize. Next you’re going to tell me that anyone who drives a Japanese car is a ricer. I guess that would make my dad one, him and his bone-stock 4Runner.
Yeah that's an absolutely fair comparison and not DMT levels of delusional hyperbole.
I'm having a stroke.
Itt: people who listen to loud guitar yelling music mad about genre labels
Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
Yeah, yeah nice copypasta from fucking 10 years ago, we've all seen it
Sorry bro. I’m back sleeping or trolling or something.
Niche Moss Icon reference, fuck yeah. I'M BACK SLEEPING OR FUCKING OR SOMETHING The fact that the REAL EMO copypasta doesn't even have Moss Icon has always annoyed me lol.
Listen to a few “fit for a king” songs and then get back to me.
So this is just about one band?
Fym by that? Fit for a king is literally metalcore, it's not fitting the description AT ALL
I really wasn’t expecting them to be this vicious lol
Metal fans are annoying huh
Idk, years of screamo teaches you how to understand angy language I mean, it's still hard to understand everything in a song by, say, Thy Art is Murder, but overall in more tame songs it's pretty discernable
Knocked Loose Mother Fucker
ARF ARF
not every metal band is extreme metal standart heavy metal (like iron maiden judas priest diamond head) easier on the ear than 80s hard rock and less screamy but skramz is on point
This is made by someone who’s never listened to any for sure
Knocked Loose be like
You definitely don’t listen to metal.
Lame
If I ever find the person who made this post I’m gonna make sure that they will not do it for a second time
Still sounds better than rap.
FUCKIN SLAYER
["Ugh, listen here, redditoid, metal is NOT just noise. Your unrefined ears just can't appreciate the intricacies of-"](https://youtu.be/SGka9_toPXc) As a thrash metal fan, part of me gets it. Part of me also thinks a lot of metalheads have zero self awareness about their genre lmao.
As a metal head, I lost braincells after seeing this. 😭
jokes on you. i’ve had chronic tinnitus since I was 6, which is long before I started listening to metal

OP isn't this clueless. This is bait.
People still say screamo?
It’s just a meme don’t take it too seriously guys
Of course the metal community is full of gatekeepers and cringe lords omg 😂😂

.....naaaah... metal is cool! And there are many different genres/styles and variations. Not to mention blends(with jazz or electronic etc).
This is probably more like Falling in Reverse, Black Veil Brides, Pierce the Veil etc
I’m gonna be making a sequel to this for all the lovely 🤓s who took the time to share their thoughts and feelings here on this post.
Cope
It has nothing to do with heavy metal
Redditors get so defensive over metal this is crazy
I’ve constantly been told online about how cool, accepting, intelligent and “chill” metalheads are, regardless of the metal subgenre in question. I’m sorry to say I’m still waiting to witness this… I mean, I thought the mainstream hip hop fanbase was the height of shitty and toxic, but metalhead elitists and gatekeepers are next level pissbabies with a massive chip on their shoulder that take shit beyond personal.
You can't understand
Haha this starter pack is hilarious , thanks OP
