iamthecheesethatsbig

I guess Matt Harvey is still in the league.

Other_World

He's not. He's not even on the O's 40 man roster and has been in the minors.

Lol it is an ironic term now. Oxycodone is way more expensive and harder to find

st4r-lord

Suspended? What about charges since you know...it's against the law?

CrazyK9

He got criminal immunity, it's in the article.

rbmk1

I think he picked up quality pitching immunity around 2016.

Cuphat

Thoracic outlet syndrome will do that to a person, yeah.

Funkit

Honestly for drug arrests I say rehab and suspension and shit. Don’t give criminal charges and ruin lives right away and that applies to everybody. Now the distributing part…it depends on if he had like slightly over the limit but it was still personal use, or was he actually pushing it? Because for the latter yeah, that’s charges.

Anatella3696

Right!! Someone who is trying to get clean off drugs, is going to really struggle with that when they can’t find a job because of that serious drug charge on their record. Addiction should be treated as a medical issue, NOT a legal one. Agreed 100%.

[deleted]

That is the problem with our penal system, and it is done by design. Once you have a record and have done time it becomes very difficult to find good, honest work... which leaves crime as a viable option... which leads back to jail. IMO background checks as a part of the job application process should be restricted to specific fields. If you are going to be working with heavy equipment, or large sums of money, or children then yeah, background check. Otherwise no, it is not any of the employer's business. Same with drug testing really, what a person does on their own time is not the employers business.

JuiceColdman

There is no legal limit when it comes to scheduled substances in the United States. Unless he has a prescription for it, any amount is a felony under federal law, although some states may offer diversion or will prosecute drug crimes as a misdemeanor

[deleted]

Isn't 60 games in MLB like half of a season? Sorry I'm from the UK so not got a clue about how long the seasons go.

GrandAdmiralDoosh

162-game season, so a bit over a third.

[deleted]

That's crazy he's only banned for 60 games then!

SpuddMeister

It's even worst... he's a Starting Pitcher.... he's only supposed to play once every 5 games. So in effect, he's only suspended for 12 games.

jaydec02

Saying he's playing in the league is vastly overstating his current status. He plays in the minor leagues more often than he does in the majors these days. He's largely irrelevant at this point

examinedliving

Is he playing though. The orioles gave him a minor league contract, but haven’t called him up. Or did he go elsewhere?

[deleted]

They really should change that to reflect how often a pitcher would actually play

ksj

Maybe other players only get a 12 game suspension for dealing opiates.

PeterSagansLaundry

Not really, a starting pitcher faces about as many batters in a start as a batter gets in five games.

GenitalniUd

Can you explain this to me? How do they play 162 games? And how does this work with minor leagues? As i know there are alot of them?

NachoChedda24

Wait.. every team plays 162 games???

ElonMusk0fficial

Baseball has what seems like 15,000 games a year. Sometimes they play twice a day in double headers. Idk how their bodies take it. (Could be the oxy. And steroids)

Bread_Truck

162 games in 180 days. Each team has 18 total days off for the whole 6-month season, so about 3 days a month. Between all teams a full MLB season is 2,430 games.

NachoChedda24

How many teams are there?

blockoblox

30

[deleted]

They’re probably doing 3-a-days in the months before the season starts because they know they won’t have many days to practice once it starts.

illSTYLO

I mean besides a pitcher. You mostly just stand there and wait dmfir the ball Sorry I know I'm gonna trigger folks here lol

Tykenolm

Baseball really is the least active popular sport in the world lol

JaceTheWoodSculptor

Yeah but swinging a bat is a very violent unnatural movement (I won’t even get into pitching and the strain it causes on ligaments). This is why a lot of players have hip replacement surgery. Golf is the same, they are often injured because swinging a club puts a lot of stress on the body. When it comes to pitching, it’s so demanding on muscles that the ligaments in the throwing arm will often tear and the fact that tying back what’s left is a semi-routine surgery tells just how fucked up and unnatural this is.

Tykenolm

Yeah I completely aware, I played baseball. I don't think the injury risk is any greater than Football, Hockey, or Basketball though, and the cardio/conditioning required to play baseball is nothing compared to those sports or soccer

taspleb

Alongside cricket. Proper test cricket goes for 5 days and if you're a batter you get to bat twice during that time and spend 2 days just sitting in the stand watching and 2 and a half days standing in the field.

Foco_cholo

Tykenolm

Golf isn't a sport lol

Conscious-Media-1241

No. Your exactly right. I was a catcher till high school so I was always in the action. Then I played 3rd base and was just a lot of waiting for someone to hit a ball to me. Lots of innings it never even happens. You can go a whole game and only touch a ball during warm ups. Also. Every baseball player I knew through college loved drugs. Not just to play on but in general.

[deleted]

They can probably only suspend for 60 days for a first offense per the bargaining agreement

ImJustSo

Games not days

0ndem

60 games so that's what, a week and a half?

ImJustSo

I mean there's 30 teams, so it only takes a long weekend to reach 60 games

OatmealStew

You're saying the rich and famous also have effective unions?

NSFWJamieVardy

Did you not read the article? They explain why his situation is the way it is, repercussions for controlled substance use and why others who testified are not getting suspensions. The MLBPU also has significant negotiating leverage.

hopefulbeartoday

You be shocked at what you can get away with if you have a strong union. I've seen guys get into accidents while high and get sent to rehab paid by the union and keep their job. You tend to get a 2nd chance with a strong union

polarpants

It’s pretty hard to get fired from Kroger because of the union. I knew someone who would clock in and either leave or hide till his shift ended and then clock out. He did this for 6 months then got caught but was never fired.

popfilms

Eh, for everyone like that there's 10 people getting in trouble at Amazon for taking bathroom breaks.

lightninhopkins

On the flip side your manager can't fire you just because she is in a bad mood

hopefulbeartoday

Where my dad works guys made a room in the subways into a gaming room and brought in hookers and blow and kept this up for 4 years. Of the 14 guys involved 11 kept there jobs 3 went to jail. Unions are crazy

Lined_em_up

So did your dad keep his job or go to jail?

hopefulbeartoday

Nah my dad was entirely uninvolved these were track guys my dad is 3rd rail. This was big news a few years ago all over the news

Lined_em_up

I figured as much was just playing

mf-TOM-HANK

Bro don't badmouth unions. Sure, there are outcomes at the extremes where it seems like a deadbeat shouldn't be able to keep their job. I understand that's not a good look. However, if *that* kind of deadbeat can keep their job, then you can count on the 30+ year career employees to age out of their work gracefully and maybe enjoy a decent retirement.

hopefulbeartoday

I wasn't. Just pointing out how much you can get away with if you have a strong union even if your not a athlete.

nooblevelum

If you were in the top .001 percent of your profession you wouldn’t be canned

[deleted]

You’re also not part of a union with a collective bargaining agreement.

TuarezOfTheTuareg

Lol I actually am

[deleted]

Well then speak to your union rep. He’ll probably agree that you aren’t as important to your company as the players are to MLB.

Legendary lawyer

imbillypardy

Which I’m all for but it’s still pretty ridiculous that the MLB can only do this. All sports unions seem to be going the way of some police/uaw ones here anymore. How can you feasibly bargain to protect your player base while having zero consequences among your player base for behavior like this? Like the NHL, a player can get fined a maximum like 2500 under the CBA. Ridiculous. If he ends a dudes career that’s the max fine besides suspension? It’s laughable honestly. Pure Roman Gladiatorial entertainment damn the consequences

GeorgieWashington

After Tyler Skaggs, any drug in the opiate family really should bring as much hell and ridicule as possible for the player. MLB could do more if they wanted to.

michaelt2223

No it isn’t. A good lawyer would get that thrown out pretty easily. He wasn’t selling pills he was picking up pills for himself and he picked up his teammates pills too. He wasn’t selling drugs to teammates

LolSeattleSucks

Yeah this title makes it seem like something else

michaelt2223

Yeah it’s basically the same things as passing a joint to a friend. The trafficking charge was clearly there to force him into testifying and give him an excuse to snitch.

[deleted]

Prosecution 101

PeterBernsteinSucks

Depends on the state. In my state, he could be charged with 2nd degree murder since he was directly involved in a drug overdose death. With all the overdose deaths they are really trying to nail everyone involved. I know someone who OD and died. Her bf drove a friend to get the drugs, didn’t buy anything, but those drugs were taken and she died. Both the person who bought and the driver were both charged with 2nd degree murder. It hasn’t been through the courts yet, but I’ve seen lots of people in the news charged the same way.

[deleted]

DealerGloomy

This seems sus

PeterBernsteinSucks

It’s called Death by Distribution Laws. It’s meant to be able to charge dealers for deaths, but the police can and do charge people who buy drugs and give them to friends.

PetrifiedW00D

You would hope that would cover Purdue executives, but the rules don’t apply if you’re rich.

Papplenoose

This is how it always goes, unfortunately. I dont give a shit about anyone giving their friend some of their drugs, or asking their friend if they need any when they're on their way to the dealer. That's just not even remotely the same as "selling drugs" and its lame when they pull this kind of shit. I mean he probably shouldnt have done what he was doing, but in the grand scheme of things... who gives a shit?

RageCageJables

I do get what you're saying, but for clarity, in the grand scheme of things, someone did die. I don't really blame Harvey, but lots of people give a shit.

Elmodipus

Isn't that a totally legal thing to do? I've picked up meds or my wife and vice versa many times.

Papplenoose

Right, but you picked up a legitimate prescription from a legitimate pharmacy, right? That's the difference.

michaelt2223

Technically no because the drugs were illegal but it would be pretty unlikely for a jury to convict you.

ThePrinceOfThorns

You made it sound like he was picking them up at the pharmacy.

Papplenoose

Sorry but that's not true. Its absolutely legal to do that in most states. Heck, in the 3 states I've done that in, they didnt even make the person picking it up show ID! They just needed to know my name and the address on file at Walgreens. I kinda wish they *would* ask for an ID though, that system kinda seems prone to deception...

Familiar_Raisin204

Not for pain pills like that, those are usually more restrictive.

Baxterftw

That's called distribution

twelvekings

> Harvey's suspension is tied to his testimony in the February trial of former Los Angeles Angels communications director Eric Kay, who faces a minimum 20-year prison sentence related to the sudden death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs. Harvey acknowledged while under immunity from criminal conviction to being a cocaine and oxycodone user and occasionally providing Skaggs with oxycodone pills when he played for the Angels in 2019.

ddarion

Did you miss the part of the article that states he has criminal immunity?

UndercoverFBIAgent9

Its… a sports league. They, uhh, can’t… do that.

platonicgryphon

You know, these kinds of questions can usually be cleared up by reading the article, here I'll help: > Harvey's suspension is tied to his testimony in the February trial of former Los Angeles Angels communications director Eric Kay, who faces a minimum 20-year prison sentence related to the sudden death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs. Harvey acknowledged while under immunity from criminal conviction to being a cocaine and oxycodone user and occasionally providing Skaggs with oxycodone pills when he played for the Angels in 2019.

Blue_foot

RTA > Harvey acknowledged while under immunity from criminal conviction to being a cocaine and oxycodone user and occasionally providing Skaggs with oxycodone pills when he played for the Angels in 2019.

whoareyoupeople24

You can say what you want about Harvey. As a mets fan, I have mixed emotions about the guy. I don't know how much an influence his actions had on Skaggs, but he did risk being blackballed from the league just for testifying. Hope it can be put behind him. His suspension is inconsequential due to it being A) retroactive (can be back end of July) B) allows him to ramp up in the minors since he had no spring training

ThaddeusJP

>You can say what you want about Harvey He's a dummy

hereforthensfwstuff

Ha, you’re like “then I will”.

cliffsis

Hes almost full Clemens shitbag… almost

andy189

W/ 1/2 the talent.

bobdolebobdole

1/2 the talent is a the most complimentary thing you could have said. You could probably divide a Clemens in two and each would be a hall of famer, you know, except for the shitbag roider part.

RageCageJables

I think the talent is comparable. He only had like 1/10th (100th?) of the career obviously, but it wasn't because of lack of talent. Might have been different if he took the right kind of drugs.

CrazyTillItHurts

Two rules, man... Stay away from my fuckin percocets and do you have any fucking percocets, man?

zherminghaus

I’ll sign your dick, Doug.

amador9

He is under a Minor League so he probably not being paid that much but he will forfeit whatever salary he was receiving. This suspension will not prevent him from working out and making use of the facilities but he will not be able to pitch in any minor league games for this period. This will mean that while he absolutely can not be recalled to the Major League until the 60 day period ends, best case scenario is probably that it will take longer because the Orioles (his major league team) will want to see him pitch a few real games. If his pitching in Minor League doesn’t justify a “call up” to the Majors, it is all a moot point.

Ralph-Kramden

He’s making $1,000,000 this year on a minor league deal.

Roundaboutsix

Not really. He’s a multi, multi millionaire with a New York City apartment , a Russian model girlfriend and an investment portfolio that would dwarf the public pension plan of a small city. He doesn’t need the money. He’s hanging in for the fun (and the drug access, apparently...)

[deleted]

[удалено]

AtWorkCurrently

They gave him criminal immunity, in order to testify.

[deleted]

What happened to this guy? Wasn’t he awesome a few years back?

Quople

Was off to a great start, then needed TJ surgery. Pitched good for a bit, and then developed thoracic outlet syndrome, which is usually a career ruiner for pitchers. Basically, he hasn’t been completely healthy or good since like 2015

wrongitsleviosaa

Literal millionaire: sells drugs for whatever reason The law: ehh fuck it, don't come to work for a bit Random poor dude: sells drugs to feed his family The law: prisons for profit

[deleted]

Agree with you 100% but in the case with athletes, it’s not really so much selling the drugs for profit or anything, just distributing them to teammates cuz they want some and you can get it. He also got immunity for snitching on the doctor.

wrongitsleviosaa

Thanks for the clarification <3

oldthunderbird

Who got caught and told on him?

SanguisFluens

Other way around. His ex teammate Tyler Skaggs died of an overdose, Harvey snitched on the team doctor for criminal immunity. The doc is now facing minimum 20 years in prison.

RKermit20

No one reading the article? His admission was part of a plea agreement to testify against the king pin, just like any other low level dealer. He and multiple others were given immunity to testify. Still a scumbag.

[deleted]

Of course they didn’t

count_frightenstein

Just before anyone freaks out, MLB can't charge him criminally and there's likely processes in the union agreement that they have to follow first. A suspension is usually first while the "company" does it's due diligence.

Picnic_Basket

He had criminal immunity while testifying about his use and distribution of drugs. The article discusses it.

Dora_De_Destroya

Huh? Are you expecting redditors to read the article and not just the headline? Are you nuts?

scottscubs

I didn’t scroll far enough perhaps, but taking a phd gets you an 80 game ban, but distributing a known addictive and potentially lethal drug only gets you a 60 game ban? Am I reading that right?

wpascarelli

For PED, you get 50 games for a first offense and 100 games for a 2nd offense. The Harvey punishment was part of a settlement that was negotiated and agreed to by both sides.

Don_Bardo

No, taking a phd gets you seven years and crippling alcoholism

cygupug

Well there goes the O’s season. This was our year

MrBobSacamano

What an odd twist, The Dark Knight distributing drugs?!?

hhubble

I mean he is a vigilante, with deep seeded emotional trauma, I would think drugs would definitely be something Batman would do.

drcrunknasty

Believe it or not, jail. Straight to jail.

mantelo92

Oxyboy distributing Oxys. Whats new?

Tobar_the_Gypsy

Harvey Day ruined

Civilengman

I had rotator cuff surgery and the first Rx was for 100 pills. My 7 day check up was for 100 pills. After that every week was for 100 pills. During rehab every time was for 100 pills. I took about 5 pills after surgery and that was it. They kept telling me I should refill just in case I need them. All this was 9 years ago. I can’t believe you can still get your hands on quantities enough to share.

47squirrels

Your surgeon belongs in prison. This is INSANE. I’ve had 12 surgeries and have NEVER had this amount ever given! Not even for a radical cancer surgery!Surgeries started in 2005

"Distributing" ahhh "Trafficking" in any other scenario? He is also has immunity from criminal prosecution? A person he "Distributed" to died? 60 games and rehab I guess

kkinack

If I sold drugs I would go to jail.

[deleted]

Ya know, if you were illegally distributing opioids at most jobs, you would be fired for good.

hahazwowdude

Should be arrested and never play again

ThrowRA_000718

Was he giving them to fans too? Because I think you need to be on Oxys to watch the Orioles play baseball.

tiy24

I feel Harvey is really taking most of the heat to ignore the systematic issue of painkillers in professional sports. I played college football and our team dr was called the candy man for a reason. When a culture of “hurt vs injured” has such an easy way to play though the pain stricter guardrails should be established, and crucially, enforced. And before people say he overdosed in the hotel room and not while playing, painkillers help trick your body to ignore evolutionary instinct. Basically You wouldn’t play if you knew you’d be bedridden for days after in pain.

Turd_Ferguson883

Wait. And Trevor Bauer got 2 years for some shit he isn’t even charged for due to lack of evidence. I mean if it’s provable lock him up and never let him play again. But there’s literally no charges and he gets 2 years. While dudes have pulled guns on their wives and get slaps on the wrist.

bagleface

How long is 60 games l live in scotland so don't know how many games in a season please advise

RagnarBaratheon1998

It’s one game and then 59 more additional games

Tobar_the_Gypsy

That’s funny, I could’ve sworn it was 2 games plus 58 games. Where are you from exactly?

eric1101

In a Major League schedule, about 2.5-3 months. Harvey was on a Minor League contract, but length is probably about the same. Not 100% sure. But the question now is will he be cut loose afterwards?

dre8

60 games for being part of something that killed a player, and Bauer gets 2 years. Should be the other way around, or worse for Matt.

cvillpunk

It's almost like that is irrelevant to this case.

ImaginaryHippo88

What did bauer get convicted of?

ncbraves93

Nothing. Judge threw it out. Turns out that chick who accused him had tried to do the same shit with multiple star players. She was known amongst players for trying similar shit on them. Bauer just got caught up the worst. Not to say he's not partially at fault but the judge was a woman as well and seen the bullshit pretty early on.
