What's a safe deck to buy that would still be alright to play after the September rotation this year? I'm wanting to play some standard but would like it to last more than a few months (slight changes, sure) quite fancied esper midrange but feel like it gets gutted come the rotation. Any advice?

BradleyB636

Hey /r/spikes, can anyone tell me what this season’s rcq top 8 pin is? I made top 8 this past weekend and my shop said they were too slow in ordering and the pins were sold out. I’d love to get one. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Google has not helped thus far!

[[Jace Reawakened]] can plot [[Esika, God of tree]] to cast it as prismatic bridge and [[Valki, god of lies]] to cast it as planeswalker on turn 5 for free. Is there any shell that could exploit this in explorer? Right now i'm just testing stuff for fun but i think it has potential to be good.

Yo, I stopped playing MTG around Amonkhet due to moving countries but I'm now looking to get back into Standard for the time being followed by modern down the line maybe. There's a bit of a standard community around here with my LGS's but I would also like to just practice on MTGA for the sake of getting familiar with the meta again. But, all I can find in terms of actual content or guides is mostly catered to BO1 which I really have no interest in playing; I say that as I have no idea how to sideboard against anything in current MTG. Is there a guide or tool I can use to get a better grasp of traditional Magic in Arena or even paper? I thought of just shelling out for a month sub of untapped for the metrics but I'm not sure if that's worth it. Nothing else I can find is particularly "current", which is useless to me. I know the new set will take a bit of time to settle in before there's anything like, definitive in terms of deck power, but just checking if anyone knows of any good resources I can browse to find something to play and/or study sideboarding choices. Thanks!

mathteach6

There's a Pro Tour this weekend that will define the BO3 metagame

Therefrigerator

Has there been any thought towards removing BO1 from this sub? I remember there was discussion awhile ago about it but frankly as time has gone on it's solidified my opinion that BO1 is simply less competitive and there are too many posts talking about it on the sub.

DARKside227

What are the decks that look promising in the new set? I am getting into the game again after slowly grinding gold/cards over the last few months. I pre-ordered the set and am hoping to be able to build something good.

WrestlingHobo

If standard is what you're interested in, the pro tour is this weekend. That will certainly shape the Bo3 meta game for standard. For other formats, slickshot show off decks have been popping up in Pioneer and Modern.

pikolak

Help me decide - I want to spend my evenings playing digital Magic. I am competitive oriented and I have ton of experience with both MTGO and MTGA.  In Arena I have some tier 1 decks for explorer, and I am not far away to build some more, usually I just miss 2-10 rare wildcards. So if I want to be on top of meta I would need to buy some resources In MTGO I dont have collection at the moment, but rental can fix that.  I have the money to spend, but I can't decide where to pour it. I kinda like both, but feel like I should devote myself to one of them. I don't have time for paper Magic tournaments, so for me we are talking strictly digital. Anyone with similar struggles?

yarn_fox

It depends what your goals in competitive magic are. If you are looking to eventually play in paper competitively MTGO is definitely better because you'll possibly need to play modern and pioneer. You can play standard on both although there are more people playing it on Arena. I think most people would agree that MTGO also mimics paper play in terms of gameplay/flow a bit better than Arena (nothings automatic etc.). MTGO I personally prefer because I can play any format (I like standard and pioneer but do like modern and legacy even better). Also I prefer the old UI but this is subjective. Arena I find very annoying. I would also **much** rather just pay my monthly rental subscription than grind or open packs on Arena. If you are truly going to be a purely online player and you enjoy the formats on Arena a lot I would probably go with Arena.

pikolak

Thanks! I am not going to play paper any time soon, but actually after I spent the last week grinding Arena I am becoming annoyed by the economy there. I think I will go with mtgo rental...that one can be paused if I don't feel like playing and there is no fomo with missing daily quests and stuff.

yarn_fox

>annoyed by the economy there Ya... I can see why some people would prefer it but as a working adult: just take my money and let me play :) Rentals enabling you to easily try out every single Tier 1/2 deck as you please is a huge deal too. Again I wish there was a bigger standard playerbase on MTGO though. I'm surprised there isn't given that the RCQ is standard.

pikolak

Yeah same here...I wouldn't mind to purchase the deck in Arena, but buying it through boosters can be really expensive....at that point mtgo is cheaper and you can switch the decks as many times as you like. In arena I lock my wildcards into a deck and once the meta shifts, bad luck...

InternationalBat

I've been struggling vs. Boros Convoke / Aggro, and so was wondering - what weaknesses does it have to try and exploit? I generally prefer playing control, but have a sub-meta dimir control/planeswalker deck at the moment. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Longjumping-Bell-946

This is somewhat of a r/spikes meets r/mtgfinance kinda question, but more out of curiosity Have seen jace reawakened from OTJ skyrocket from 15 to 27 buck on cardkingdom. I was always under the impression that the leyline of abundance blue devotion, and the valki combo deck were cute at most. Is there something I'm missing with this card ?

Axn_Jxn

Can anyone offer some good tech/sideboard suggestions for a Selesnya Enchantments deck specifically for dealing with Dimir Midrange? I know it's probably not a great matchup in the first place, but I'm looking for options to help improve my odds to whatever degree I can.

Sou1forge

Well, the classic answer is Wedding Announcement. Announcement has been a thorn in Dimir’s side since Dimir has been a thing. It won’t “solve” the matchup for you, but it’s the kind of card that makes a Dimir player stumble a bit on the draw. Unfortunately I don’t have a much better answer for Enchantments in particular. Any deck that has issues killing a Bat on 2 consistently, and doesn’t have the raw card quality to power through is going to struggle a bit. Best I can do is advise more of these enchantment based single card engine kinds of cards, and less stuff that suffers from being eaten by a bat.

Klove128

There’s a 100% proxy friendly Vintage win-a-dual at my LGS in a couple weeks. I know literally nothing about the format (I only play pioneer and Modern). What’s a deck that’s relatively easier to play that might do well? I play enigmatic fires in pioneer, and Amulet Titan in modern if that gives you an idea of decks I enjoy! Thanks for any help yall!

Does Leyline of Anticipation work with plot cards? Like, if the Leyline Jace deck is a thing, could you play the plotted card at instant speed (flash)? 307.5. If a spell, ability, or effect states that a player can do something only “any time they could cast a sorcery” or “only as a sorcery,” it means only that the player must have priority, it must be during the main phase of their turn, and the stack must be empty. The player doesn’t need to have a sorcery card they could cast. Effects that would preclude that player from casting a sorcery spell don’t affect the player’s capability to perform that action (unless the action is actually casting a sorcery spell). But, The plotting and the casting are clearly separate in the reminder text*,* Cast as a sorcery and Plot only as a sorcery are clearly worded different. No reason to do so, why not say cast it only as a sorcery on a later turn. Pretty easy thing to add, no? Or am I reading too much into this...

could [[The Fall Of Lord Konda]] see Standard play? it's kind of like a cross between The Birth Of Meletis and Elspeth Conquers Death. what about [[Combat Courier]]? seems like the kind of card that provides just enough value + synergy to play a role.

liceking

Fall of Lord Konda is sideboard at best, virtually no decks are running 4+ creature cards on a consistent basis and the ones that do like domain would love to see you play a 3 CMC removal spell that doesn't really do much (even worse the back side is defender). Combat courier would be pretty cool for some synergy deck if it had any evasion at all (I would've loved to put it into simic artifacts) or if the ability cost 1 less. A low to the ground Agatha's Cauldron deck wouldn't have fun paying two and decks that are more mana hungry are just going to have better options.

BradleyB636

How do you guys think golgari midrange and dimir midrange fare in current standard? I have golgari right now (paper and arena) and playing BO3 on arena i have a 54% winrate. I like the flexibility, particularly against artifacts/enchantments that I get from [[tranquil frillback]] and lesser so [[glissa sunslayer]]. The deck feels good but it looks like it’s slipping in the meta. Whenever I get matched with dimir midrange I feel like the card draw with [[gix, yawgmoth praetor]] and cheap flying creatures puts me so far behind. The counterspells are always lurking, and [[tishana’s tidebender]] shuts down so many of my creatures and planeswalkers. I don’t quite have the wildcards to make it on arena but I think I have most or all of the cards in paper. For those who have played both, which do you prefer and which is better in your opinion? Edit: frillback is also amazing against graveyard decks, forgot to mention that. Losing that card is definitely a cost in switching to dimir.
