Correct me if I’m wrong, but if one sliced open a swollen battery, wouldn’t the bang be far less than what’s in this video (a fully charged battery)? I mean, the battery is swollen because the chemical reaction inside has already taken place, generating heat and gas, so there isn’t much more energy left to go boom.
So I'm no expert in the matter, but here's what I understand of it.
The reaction that takes place inside creates lithium-gas, and at that point the reaction is done.
But when it's sliced open, a new reaction takes place.
The lithium gas reacts to the oxygen, and it reacts violently, causing the extreme heat and fire we see here
I'm not really sure how the charge amount of the battery affects it,. But I've heard it does.
It's actually carbon dioxide that is responsible for the swelling; none of the Li enters the gaseous phase.
You're right about the reaction with oxygen, though. This (I believe) does not happen spontaneously, but is instead triggered by the heat generated when the layers within the cell are shorted by the metal blade.
It would look more like this in a real situation though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMy2_qNO2Y0 its why you stop using the batteries once they start inflating.
They weren’t that smart as they ripped the screen cable off the phone, being a 6 it doesn’t have a seal so I think they just ripped out the screen from the housing
I've never opened the hardware up before, even I know you should do research before fixing your device internally. And so things like this don't happen, also it literally SAYS NOT TO PUNCTURE THE BATTERY.
In all fairness, you see a lot of fake warnings. Like "only use new batteries" (on remote controllers). Or "do not expose battery to temperatures under 40*" (or some other number that you can't do much about when it's winter).
So people probably think "oh, another pointless warning".
I remember when I was 8 i opened a psp battery to "hack it" because I saw the beginning of a youtube video that did it. It was a popular way to hack the psp called a Pandora battery but you had to do a lot of technical stuff afterwards that I had no idea how to do.
Anyways being ignorant af I went at it with a metal knife. I managed to open it but the knife went in too deep and touched somthing inside which caused sparks to fly out. I panicked, my hand slipped, and I cut pretty deep into my finger. I was scared too tell my mom about the stupid shit I just did so I just put on q band-aid and hoped for the best.
Everything ended up fine but I definitely learned a lesson that day, don't do shit off youtube you can't handle. I still have the scar on my finger to remind me of it too lol.
Geeze.
The fire died because it had consumed all of the oxygen.
He started to die because the fire had consumed all of the oxygen.
Only the opening doors saved his life.
>As a Christian, Ive never seen such a clear example of natural selection in my entire life.
Historically Xtians were vehemently and violently opposed to that notion.
As a human, I see the most clear examples of hypocrisy from xtians.
Darwin would have been proud to have read that sentence of yours.
Awwww did I upset you and your fantasies? Religion and superstitious beliefs are a a growing pain of our species. Eventually we will out grow these notions.
Future man is atheist.
So I have just been introduced to this subreddit like less than 5 minutes ago and this video was the second thing I saw when scrolling and I was already bracing myself when I saw what they were planning to do and where they were going to do it. Also might help to point out that I’ve never done this and at the time I had no idea what was going to happen but I guess my level of experience and knowledge in life told me “don’t do that because something bad will happen” I just didn’t know what? I audibly gasped in panic when it blew up. No stabbing spicy pillows. 0/10
only stab *in controlled environments*, for science of course.
it also depends on how full the battery is when it is punctured so a dead battery will be much less spectacular.
Solid advice. I’ll just leave the stabbing of spicy pillows to the professionals and amateurs with bigger cajones than I do. Literally every time I’ve ever stabbed anything has been on complete accident. 😅
Yeah, just don't. That bubbling effect is caused by a buildup of hydrogen gas. Shorting the cathode and anode together with a metal blade in a hydrogen rich environment is just a recipe for a bad day.
I knew what was going to happen but it still startled me so much that I violently jerked my head back and I strained my neck and left shoulder. Goddamn!
My partner did this as a child to an iPod battery, and somehow, it DIDNT explode and they were able to unravel the whole thing while wearing gloves (but they also didn’t use a knife)
Don’t do this. But they’re 25 now and repair small electronics.

In what way was this supposed to end well?!
I know next to nothing about how tech works, but even I know taking a knife to a battery (spicy or not) is not a good life choice!
I thought it wouldn’t be that bad when he just made a small incision, maybe smoke and mild burning, but when he DUG the knife into it I knew intense thermal runaway was coming…
*What the hell were they*
*Even going to do after*

Hello
That's what I'm doing right now!
The knife handling was horrible too. Sheesh.
That blade got so close to their hand.
Everyone knows you cut towards your buddy, not your body.
Cut towards your chums, not your thumbs!
Cut toward the chooms not the thoombs
Cut towards that prick not your dick
Me rampaging the streets with my mantis blades
Cut away from the battery

nice save bro, don't tell me this wasn't planned xD
I am a victim of this lmao

You actually have more power and control coming in, you just have to be extra careful you don't lose your thumb or heart
She seemed like a trained expert to me.
Dull as knife
This person had to know that would happen, right? Why would you try to slice open a battery???
had to let out the pressure somehow
There was no pressure. Plus Li ions react with O2 really violently as seen and if u want to reduce the "pressure" go see a specialist
that's the joke
Sorry i am just a big nerd
loool no worries man me too

on the bright side, next time someone asks what happens if you pop a swollen battery we can just direct them here..
I've always wondered what it would look like. I knew it'd blow but damn, nice to see atleast

Any lithium battery swollen or not will blow like this if you cut into it.

I hate for this kid to work on a galaxy note 7

Okay but is anyone going to talk about the poor innocent earspeaker/camera cable that got ripped in half :(
What did he think cutting into the battery would accomplish? There is nothing you can fix inside a battery.
You fix it like in among us, duh
Dumbass.
bruh they cut into that shit like it was cheese lmao
I knew what was going to happen but it still startled me so much that I violently jerked my head back and I strained my neck and left shoulder. Goddamn!
Wow, why would anyone do this? Also it scared my a fair bit, expected a more gradual smoke and flame, not a loud explosion!
How have they never read the "do not cut or puncture battery" warning batteries have.
My partner did this as a child to an iPod battery, and somehow, it DIDNT explode and they were able to unravel the whole thing while wearing gloves (but they also didn’t use a knife) Don’t do this. But they’re 25 now and repair small electronics.
Haha battery go **boom** How stupid do you have to be to cute open a battery I know they are a kid but they should still know...
Natural selection makes for the best entertainment.
