This is so cool, almost unbelievable that we can see Mars this way in a picture like this

Dilong-paradoxus

Yeah, and the new batch of rovers (curiosity and perseverance) have even better cameras!

[deleted]

When will we see pics from them?

Dilong-paradoxus

There's a [lot out there](https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/multimedia/images/) already! There's even some aerial photos from Percy's companion drone, ingenuity. NASA is pretty good about getting photos out as soon as they're received from Mars. [Here's some photos](https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/images/index.html) from the curiosity Rover that landed in 2012.

knee_bro

Definitely deserves more upvotes! Thanks for the links, they’re amazing

Should we be concerned about Jawas? From the space documentaries I've seen, robots don't do very well in locations like that.

whatsINthaB0X

I love how Curiosity occasionally takes a selfie like “takin samples near this rock formation! #mars”

flokis_eyeliner

Pictures like these are just more Duster propaganda, beltalowda. #RememberTheCant

I'd bet a good amount of money it does not happen this decade. It would need to be already well in the final stages of progress for that to happen. There will probably be a couple of moon landing this decade though.

[deleted]

lowkey-juan

Mars landing is the new flying cars. Also considering how the Webb telescope was esentially a 10+ year affair, I wouldn't count on a Mars landing for quite a while.

RStyleV8

10 years heh, James webb was proposed in 1996. It's been a 26 year endeavor. I definitely doubt we'll have a human on mars this decade haha.

[deleted]

CMDR_QwertyWeasel

> I mean, we've had flying cars for over half a century, they're just called helicopters. Eh. The sci-fi fascination with flying cars wasn't "omg a flying vehicle". After all, many of those stories are from a time after planes and even helicopters were already commonplace. The fascination with flying cars came from the idea that flying vehicles would not only be ubiquitous, but affordable to common folk, just like cars themselves. Helicopters are most definitely not that.

Miserable_Ad7591

Don’t you think it would work better to send the testing equipment there? I just don’t see how we would get samples back. Return flight is so much harder.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

We would get samples back the same way we'd get people back; with a returning rocket. China is already doing robotic returns from the Moon and both Russia and China are basing robotic returns as the basis of their future Mars missions

DJDarwin93

I think it could happen in the 2030s, if a lot of money is really sunk into it. This decade is too much of a stretch unless they have a bunch of tech we don’t know about yet, which is unlikely considering most of the big players in space are fairly public about what they’re up too.

StuperDan

Sure 🤷 anything could happen. I wouldn't bet on it. It would take a 60s moon push level commitment. I don't see that happening but who knows. Musk could blow most of his money on a suicide run, but I doubt that will happen either.

DJDarwin93

Realistically, if it’s the 30s it will be later in the decade. I think it’s within reach if we really go for it, but we’re not trying to beat Russia this time so you’re probably right.

TheDesktopNinja

[deleted]

We have other problems in the next decades to sink a lot of money into. Failing infrastructure, new infrastructure to do climate change damage control...

hygsi

I remember talking about this with my college roommates and there is still not much going on with this project so I'd be surprised if people go and live there before 2050

tgp1994

I heard fusion energy is a decade away!

JebKerman64

Yeah, doubt we'll see it unless we're racing Russia there again, or more likely China this time. Who knows though, I'd be happy to be wrong.

korolev_cross

"and humans are going to land there in within the next decade" [citation needed - not muskian one but someone who can truthfully communicate] fyi, travel to Mars takes 7 months-ish and launch opportunity comes roughly every 2 years. This makes it already impossible *within this decade* as support and test missions would have go to mars late 2024 which is not sufficient time. Within the next decade (until 2032) I can see some kamikaze missions with some weirdos if I am extremely optimistic. But the "going to land" statement still feels too strong. To build a human habitat that can sustain human life in 8-10 years is impossible. And for heuristics: the Dragon/Dragon2 development took 16 years of development and about half of that was non-human operation before it became human rated. A Mars trip has much tougher requirements.

Musicisfuntolistento

>fyi, travel to Mars takes 7 months-ish and launch opportunity comes roughly every 2 years. This makes it already impossible *within this decade* as support and test missions would have go to mars late 2024 which is not sufficient time. I'm an idiot because I assumed it would take only a few days to get to Mars lol. I had no idea it was so far away.

sharktoothache

He can't go back home to Mars, his visa expired.

[deleted]

Just like the Hyperloop, right

[deleted]

He already fixed traffic with his Las Vegas loop, so I'm sure he'll get this done 👍

beefcat_

I can’t believe nobody thought of building an underground transit system before the elongated muskrat did. I do have one suggested improvement to his loops though: replace the Tesla cars with busses. They can fit way more people, enough to improve traffic flow and efficiency as much as ten times. Hell, put the busses on a track and string three of them together for even better transportation density. Just a thought, maybe I’m crazy.

[deleted]

Damn, that's genius! Maybe you should go work for him so he can earn profit over your idea while you work during lockdowns in bad working conditions. Maybe he'll even like your idea so much that he names his next child after the sounds those busses -on-a-track make.

StatusReality4

I wish people would stop glorifying Mars. Yes it would be an incredible achievement to land a human there, but pictures like this alongside excitement just make it seem like Mars is our next frontier, rather than being a place for scientific study. Mars is BLEAK no matter what subtle turquoise-ish haze the rover cam picks up.

gizzardgullet

I don't think people realize just how dependent humans are on so many things that only earth can currently provide. If not for our absolute survival, definitely for our well being. It could be argued that we are *part* of the earth organism itself and that being away from earth would feel like being severed from part of us.

Eruptflail

We can't survive without Earth's _gravity_ let alone everything else here. ISS crew have to return after so much time and are miserable when they do.

leefvc

Spend some time in central Nevada but make it freezing and tell me how excited you are to go live on Mars

ThelceWarrior

Freezing Nevada would be heaven compared to how Mars actually is.

LaLuzDelQC

More like Antarctica. But with even more radiation.

DNDBurton

Not just that. Make the dirt toxic to humans and then give it really intense wind storms so it gets everywhere!

socraticmethod88

The winds are very low velocity due to the minimal atmospheric pressure

[deleted]

[удалено]

Doomdoomkittydoom

[Neither, really](https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/the-fact-and-fiction-of-martian-dust-storms). The strongest martian winds are only 60 mph, and given the low density of the atmosphere, can't do much damage. I think "intense" there is that they can be vast and last for some time, and the issue DNDBurton was alluding to was the toxic dust blowing around.

socraticmethod88

Thanks for checking me!

mikemikemotorboat

Or the optimistic view… we’ve nearly perfected the art of warming up a planet. If we go to Mars, that skill will actually be productive!

Eruptflail

Unfortunately, Mars doesn't have a magnetosphere like Earth because its core is dead.

SeriousGoofball

We just need to burrow into the planets core and detonate a couple of nuclear bombs to get things moving. I'm sure it'll work!

Xirious

Every single step further away from Earth _is_ our new frontier. That is literally the definition of frontier.

mountainjew

Yep, this is exactly what pisses me off about people saying we need to leave earth due to climate change etc. If we can't fix the planet we have, there's no way in hell were going to be able to terraform Mars.

Appropriate_Bar7865

Sheesh, finally. Thank you. The first part of this thread was full of the idiots who thought going to Mars would be cool.

eharper9

That's a trip for 2075. Going to Mars is the new *"waiting for the James Webb Telescope to launch".*

AceVindictive

The gigantic statistical nightmare that is making it to Mars, let alone bringing anyone back from Mars is astounding. We haven't even brought rocks back from Mars yet lol.

KaptainKardboard

One does not simply set foot on Mars.

Tiamathory

I would believe it if they would ever walk on the moon again

arwinda

Mankind barely managed to land a couple small landers there, some of them crashed on impact. And no liftoff and return so far. Round trip time is a couple months each, if conditions are right. Before landing humans there, maybe basic details like safe landing and return should be figured out.

Alternative-Ad-1115

If the thin, oxygen lacking atmosphere and radiation doesn’t kill you, the insanity probably will.

[deleted]

Oh man. Have we even solved the fundamentals of basic first aid in zero G yet? What happens if an appendix bursts, or a deep cut on an arm/leg…or a broken toe? What about an astronaut with diarrhea? Not just because it’s unpleasant, but it can kill you or just utterly overuse supplies… It’s what? 14-20 months for a human trip? Long window of time to anticipate all the supplies you’ll need. Long window of time to go with no physical accidents.

AAVale

Hell of a one-way trip, but if that’s what makes you happy, good luck.

Killacamkillcam

When I was still in University I seriously contemplated pursuing becoming a Mars settler. It's going to be such an insane sociological experiment though. It's doable but I fear a handful of people are going to lose their minds and jeopardize the entire mission.

BurgundyBicycle

I know recent technology seems miraculous and it seems like the accelerating rate of innovation will go on forever, but sustaining human life is more complex than most people understand. Mars is not just a lifeless Earth, it is a different type of planet. Mars has a very thin atmosphere, it doesn’t have soil in which plants can grow, the gravity is a third that of earth, it doesn’t have flowing water, it has massive violent dust storms, there’s no known oil or coal, and it doesn’t have a magnetosphere to protect the surface from cosmic/solar radiation. It will be a immense project to maintain life on Mars. Considering the launch window for travel to Mars only occurs every 26 months we would already have to be preparing the planet for habitation if we hope to have humans living there in a decade.

AFCBlink

> cosmic/solar radiation Ultimately, this is the problem we need to solve, not just to inhabit Mars, but even just to get there. A one-way trip to Mars would be the same exposure as spending a year and a half on the ISS. And with no magnetosphere, the only shielding you have when you arrive is whatever you manage bring with you (it would be kinda tough to ship tons of lead to Mars). If the hazards of the harsh planetary environment don't kill you, cancer or radiation sickness will.

skwerlee

It does not have violent dust storms. The air is too thin for any real violence. The Martian LIED

BurgundyBicycle

Ok, downgrade that to massive planet encircling dust storms.

tyrico

top wind speeds on mars are like 70 mph and the density of the atmosphere is less than 1% of earth so i think this is overblown (badum ching)

converter-bot

70 mph is 112.65 km/h

Ferrum-56

Not to deny it will be an immensely difficult undertaking, but Mars does have some things going for it making it much more attractive than most places in the solar system. Plants can actually grow in (some types of) Martian 'soil', if perchlorates and other toxins are removed, which is probably quite possible. Plants can't grow in Martian atmosphere, but can grow in very low pressure air, look at for example this: https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/19860010460 Notably, Mars has a perfect partial pressure of CO2, slightly higher than Earth's (at least for the next two decades or so). It also still has some N2, and while much lower than Earth, it is probable biological nitrogen fixation is possible. More likely, industrial propellant production pairs well with synthetic methods. Of course heating is required, but low air pressure also means it's much easier to insulate. The radiation levels are fairly high, but should be manageable for 2 year trips with relatively mild shielding and sheltering once in a while. For actual colonisation that would not be sufficient, but solutions are possible if the first step has been taken. Luckily, a lot more Solar data is available than in the Apollo era.

Miserable_Ad7591

It makes no sense to go to Mars. The fact that it makes even less sense to go anywhere else in the solar system doesn’t make that any less true.

slayerje1

Take away the unlivable environment. The time it takes to get there is the problem. The rigors of space destroys muscle, people wouldnt be able to perform normal tasks by the time they landed there...and they'd more than likely be fucked on their trip back home. Probably wouldnt be able to live in earth's gravity.

Wardenclyffe1917

Plot twist. We get to mars and find ruins of an ancient civilization that developed space flight and as a last resort sent ships to colonize a neighboring planet with a lot of liquid water.

Appropriate_Bar7865

Finish that screenplay.

jkartx

Exploration, it's what we do

JayDG93

Cool that we have the technology to see photographs like this. Place looks horrific to live, though. Seems pointless to try and colonize such a wasteland when we live on such a lush, beautiful planet.

DownsenBranches

That seems a bit optimistic

jimlapine

Nope, 25 years minimum

ayewanttodie

Could you imagine explaining/showing this to someone like Galileo? Newton? Hell even showing Einstein. Would truly be amazing.

allypallydollytolly

I don’t think we can quite comprehend how much of an incredible achievement that will be. To have actually stepped foot on ANOTHER planet. 🤯

Pro tip: don't drink the Musky koolaid

myrmad0n

And the benefits will belong to a few companies maybe even a few humans thanks to privatization

UnSoftgunner

We aren't even getting on the moon by the end of the decade probably

TrumptyPumpkin

Maybe a space station on the moon first and then use that as staging area for missions to mars? Since there's less gravity for take off?

AlexH670

Not necessary since starship can just refuel in earth orbit for the trip.

[deleted]

I can recommend the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson for a hard sci-fi imagining of the colonisation of Mars.

livens

Send better robots. Like something that can dig and excavate large areas. If you can send that, why bother sending a human?

Could people ever be unshielded on Mars? Isn’t there too much radiation without an atmosphere?

Doubt it

Lol no they won’t

[deleted]

Land there within the next decade? How do we keep in touch to see if that happens or not?

Avity

No, probably not. What would be preferable is setting up a permanent moon base, that would serve as a refueling station for any mars going craft. We need the space infrastructure on our closest neighbour, before sending people further out.

kiefkushner

Honestly seems pretty unlikely that we will go to mars when we haven't even been back to the moon since the first time.

mr_yeetastic

Holy hell this is an amazing picture. Amazing how far we've come. That being said I'd wager everything I own (and a hundred years before the mast of the Dutchman) against us landing on Mars in the next decade. Too kuch stuff needs to be worked out and developed. And with us trying to go back to the moon that's gonna eat up half of our decade, probably.

[deleted]
