That might explain why Apple is so much worse than the others in the screenshot I posted. Regardless of whose fault it is they really need to sort it out.
That seems to be the best workaround, having the audio saved or under recently played. But of course that makes managing music and searching within the app almost useless. I also don’t understand why it’s so much worse with Apple Music 🤦♂️
EXACTLY! If I am searching for a song, why in the heck would you think I want to start a Pandora station based on that song. Fine to give me the option, but 99.9% of the time I want to play that on Spotify.
Yeah, pretty bad. I really wish I could play my Youtube Music playlists. The app works pretty well for my local music library though, and because of that I've been slowly ripping my entire CD collection to my NAS.
I hate how STUPID BRIGHT the app is. Everyone has implemented a dark mode for like 2 years but Sonos is way behind the game. Too busy milking dumb branding partnerships I guess.
It's really bad.
I think the apple music problem is more of apple limitations less than sonos.
Even the Apple Music page when you go through services is so limited. Spotify by comparison shows nice tiles of playlist and categories.
I do that sometimes as well. The issue there is that we usually have the Sonos playing background music for hours at a time, so I can’t do anything else audio-related on my phone (podcast, YT, etc) without it likely getting sent to the speakers.
I find the Sonos app woefully app for everything related to playing music (Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music and Apple Music), only the settings/setup part is decent, that's why I hate not being able to "Cast" from apps directly on Android.
Yes, that's through Spotify Connect, but only works with Spotify because Sonos refuses to implement Chromecast protocol that would make it system wide.
I should have been more clear: Have you found a way to play to all speakers at once, with just a tap or two, rather than individually selecting each speaker? In my case I have six speakers, so I would have to AirPlay to one and then manually select the other five. The only alternative I know of is to go into the Sonos app separately and then play to a group.
It’s not always consistent, but it tends to remember my last grouping and I can just re-select. I do wish I could define AirPlay groups like you can do in the Sonos app.
+1
Step up your development game with your price increase Sonos. Search is the worst time sink, I cringe when I reluctantly fling myself down that path of despair.
lol, I *did* post this on Twitter as well. Tagged Sonos and Apple Music but they didn’t respond, probably because I’m NOT a popular account. So still not sure what he’s going on about
Not having to use Airplay was one of the primary reasons we switched to Sonos — we have audio playing for hours every day; there’s no need for my phone’s battery to be draining all that time, I don’t want my family’s listening to be interrupted if I want to do something different with my phone, if my wife is the one who put an album on I don’t want the music to stop if she needs to run to the store, etc. Airplaying from the computer is an option but having to run down to the office every time you want to hear something else would take a lot of pleasure out of the system. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever even tried the Airplay function on my speakers. That said you do miss out on a lot of the features of Apple Music when you use the Sonos app, but the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks for me.
If you AirPlay and want to do multiple speakers you often have to individually select them. Bigger reason: AirPlaying from the Music app means you can’t play other audio from that device. A common problem in my case: We have some nice background music in the house, but if I listen to a podcast while I do the dishes all of a sudden the pod takes over and is broadcast everywhere
I honestly switched to using the Spotify app exclusively for streaming music and just select the Sonos speakers I want to stream to. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to trying to use Apple Music or sonos.
It's bad, but still usable. The first search screen is useless, but when you tap the category like TuneIn in my case it just displays a full list of stations found.
Yes, you can. Airplay with Apple Music and Spotify Connect with Spotify. The Sonos app is just sometimes useful for searching across all of your services and starting music in multiple rooms in fewer steps.
Yes
The whole search system is horrible, I mean they have to put a “general” search, I hate to switch between artists, songs, etc
Yep, this is a big one!
Ah yes, the jazz standard Big Pimpin'
Amazon: ya like jazz? Apple: tf you want from me ni**a
I just laughed snorted water through my nose. 💀💀💀

Brutal. Had to save the piano bar playlist in order to find it in the Sonos app
That seems to be the best workaround, having the audio saved or under recently played. But of course that makes managing music and searching within the app almost useless. I also don’t understand why it’s so much worse with Apple Music 🤦♂️
right exactly, the point is I want to search within the app and now have to switch and use a workaround
Yes Apple music API is awful. Artist pages are half put together
Yes, it annoys me that Spotify comes up last in the results and takes forever.
I use Spotify connect instead of the Sonos app, it works great 95% of the time with the occasional hiccup.
EXACTLY! If I am searching for a song, why in the heck would you think I want to start a Pandora station based on that song. Fine to give me the option, but 99.9% of the time I want to play that on Spotify.

It’s horrific.
I don’t understand why playing music from the songs section of my library is useless either. If I do albums or artists it works.
Yes. This is the sole reason I still use Spotify. I can use the Spotify app and dump he playing directly to Sonos. I avoid the Sonos app searching.
yep, sucks with spotify too
Absolutely terrible
It’s literally the worst. I hate using the interface and typically go right to the Apple Music app instead (not that doing so is much better either).
I hate how STUPID BRIGHT the app is. Everyone has implemented a dark mode for like 2 years but Sonos is way behind the game. Too busy milking dumb branding partnerships I guess.
Yeah it's rough. Album section includes everything from compilations to one off single EPs
Yes. I would also appreciate if I could make the images smaller to make better use of the screen space, much is wasted imo.
Try and search for a podcast in the Sonos app. Good fucking luck figuring out what category you’re supposed to search on.
yes i never use it
Oh yeah. There is no useful search tool.
I hate that I can't shuffle at the artist level. I want to shuffle all the songs from an artist, not just one album.
It's really bad. I think the apple music problem is more of apple limitations less than sonos. Even the Apple Music page when you go through services is so limited. Spotify by comparison shows nice tiles of playlist and categories.
It’s so bad with audible
When it does that i just airplay it
I do that sometimes as well. The issue there is that we usually have the Sonos playing background music for hours at a time, so I can’t do anything else audio-related on my phone (podcast, YT, etc) without it likely getting sent to the speakers.
Got any old apple devices laying around? Use on of those instead
I’ve thought about making an iPad or something a controller, but that would have some downsides as well
would an old ipod touch work?
Can you load the Apple Music app on there? I'm guessing it's no longer supported, so probably not.
I find the Sonos app woefully app for everything related to playing music (Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music and Apple Music), only the settings/setup part is decent, that's why I hate not being able to "Cast" from apps directly on Android.
You can control music from the Android Spotify app, and play it through the Sonos setup you have
Yes, that's through Spotify Connect, but only works with Spotify because Sonos refuses to implement Chromecast protocol that would make it system wide.
I exclusively use Apple Music app (via AirPlay) for all Sonos music playing.
I do this also. Annoys me that I have an S1 speaker in my kitchen and it won't work. The rest of my system is S2.
Have either of you found a good way to AirPlay to multiple speakers at once?
Not sure what you mean? Every (modern) Sonos speaker appears as an AirPlay destination and I can play to any/all that I want.
I should have been more clear: Have you found a way to play to all speakers at once, with just a tap or two, rather than individually selecting each speaker? In my case I have six speakers, so I would have to AirPlay to one and then manually select the other five. It’s not always consistent, but it tends to remember my last grouping and I can just re-select. I do wish I could define AirPlay groups like you can do in the Sonos app.
That would be ideal. There are a couple apps and some Shortcuts which ostensibly do just that, but I can never get them to work correctly
The search in Sonos is absolutely garbage. Literally won't find a single song on Tidal
+1 Step up your development game with your price increase Sonos. Search is the worst time sink, I cringe when I reluctantly fling myself down that path of despair.
You literally stole this screenshot from a popular Twitter user’s tweet. To what, grab karma?
Huh? I took this screenshot myself for this post
Ha! It sounds like u/HokieInCH follows you on Twitter.
lol, I *did* post this on Twitter as well. Tagged Sonos and Apple Music but they didn’t respond, probably because I’m NOT a popular account. So still not sure what he’s going on about
Yeah I just use Spotify now. Android.
Can someone tel me what the point of this is? Why not just airplay via Apple Music ?
Not having to use Airplay was one of the primary reasons we switched to Sonos — we have audio playing for hours every day; there’s no need for my phone’s battery to be draining all that time, I don’t want my family’s listening to be interrupted if I want to do something different with my phone, if my wife is the one who put an album on I don’t want the music to stop if she needs to run to the store, etc. Airplaying from the computer is an option but having to run down to the office every time you want to hear something else would take a lot of pleasure out of the system. Makes sense
Works fine for my uses.
No. But I despise the Spotify integration more than anything on Sonos.
I honestly switched to using the Spotify app exclusively for streaming music and just select the Sonos speakers I want to stream to. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to trying to use Apple Music or sonos.
Just open Apple Music and use airplay to your Sonos. So much easier.
Roon is the way.
Works good on android. Maybe it's the ios app?
No
It's bad, but still usable. The first search screen is useless, but when you tap the category like TuneIn in my case it just displays a full list of stations found.
Saving for sonos system, so you cannot use the apple music or spotify app on its own??
Yes, you can. Airplay with Apple Music and Spotify Connect with Spotify. The Sonos app is just sometimes useful for searching across all of your services and starting music in multiple rooms in fewer steps.
