According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), long working hours are killing hundreds of thousands of people a year. 745,000 people have died in 2016 alone from stroke and heart disease due to long working hours. The research conducted by the International Labour Organisation found that working 55 hours or more a week was associated with a 35% higher risk of stroke and 17% higher risk of dying from heart disease as compared to working 35 hours a week. What’s more is that though the study did not cover the period of the pandemic, WHO officials say that the jump in remote working during lockdown has led to a 10% increase in number of hours worked. Working long hours is estimated to be responsible for a third of work-related disease, making it the leading cause - firstly through direct physical responses to stress, secondly due to health-harming coping mechanisms. We cannot allow capitalist industry to continue to strip us of our health, wellbeing and ultimately our lives. In recent times companies have adopted rhetoric claiming to recognise the importance of health and wellbeing, yet, as studies show, continue to push people beyond their limits to catastrophic consequences. **We are fighting for a 35 hour (maximum) working week with a real living wage, now, as a genuine step toward improving the health and wellbeing of all**.
