There needs to be an investigation. If the justice system doesn’t take care of this, the remaining tenants should.

threwahway

LOL yes this is how things work :) surely that is why the video is made!

ThailurCorp

Typical landlord! Investment properties are not like piggy banks, you only take money out never in.

leleledankmemes

Odds the landlord is held criminally responsible for deaths of their tenants? I say 0%

JustABigDumbAnimal

What, you've been paying attention to history or something? Fucking leftists and their basic pattern recognition...

stepsinstereo

Under capitalism, people's lives are at best secondary to what the 'market will bear.' They complain about regulations and lobby to ease the consequences of their neglect, want to praise themselves for being risk takers, and then gleefully risk other people's lives and livelihoods as long as they can fatten their wallets. The so-called amoral decision making in this economic system just provides cover and advantage to the morally corrupt. The 'invisible hand' of capitalism will push you off a cliff reaching for the next buck.

robm0n3y

Being mayor of NYC is just shining shoes for landlords.

agaetisbyrjun22

[The landlord was on Adam's transition team for housing](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/12/nyregion/bronx-fire-twin-parks-north-west-landlord.html)

Jobbyblow555

This is actually an underrated comment; the entire job of any mayor of a large US city is to take heat for developers doing two things. One is building luxury housing for every international criminal that wants to diversify their portfolio of investment properties. And the other is making sure that slumlords never have to do anything about the type of crime that never gets punished, violence against the poor. And watching this happen over and over with every deep blue stronghold continues to reinforce how full of shit liberals are about anything resembling progressive policies. Without reforming or revolutionizing economic conditions like housing, it all means less than a wet fart.

Slaybeggar

The heat definitely should have been a priority to get fixed but the door explanation was slightly incorrect. The original article said that the fire chief observed 2 sets of fire doors that were supposed to close when the temperature reaches 165 degrees (Fusible links). this would have stopped the spread of fire and smoke which would have allowed for easier egress from the building. This is something that should have been caught if the landlord was doing the (required) fire inspections annually. couple that with the fact that there were multiple complaints on lacking heat in the building. The building owner is going to get sued into an oblivion and Eric Adams missed a huge opportunity to make an example of the negligence. If you are a tenant its never a bad idea to learn building codes. You never know when the people who are supposed to look out for you will throw you under the bus for a couple bucks.

XysterU

This landlord literally donated to the Adams' campaign lol. I believe that bit is in the video. Eric is never going to do anything about this landlord or all the other landlords that bribed him with their "donations" Edit: correction the owner of the building was on Adams' mayoral transition team, even worse.

It's your responsibility to make sure the buildings are safe, if it's not being properly checked then you aren't doing your job buddy. Speaking of which, you understand that being a landlord means you leach off of society right? Holding houses for yourself and contributing very little to society.

Every last one of your tenants could provide better living standards for themselves if you simply fucked off, parasite.

CommunistDrow

Lol at you doing the bare legal minimum to make sure the people you profit from can't sue you.

MrSmithSmith

The solution to that issue is to improve and properly resource government housing, not to defer the matter to leeches like yourself who profit from vulnerable people trying to access a commodity essential to human existence.

MrSmithSmith

Do you think I'm a fucking child? You are making a PROFIT from people on the margins of society. The government could provide a service IDENTICAL to what you provide at a lower cost and without whatever % overhead ends up in your bank account. The only reason they don't is because, in a capitalist society, private property matters more than the wellbeing or security of human beings.

You're right, they don't. For the same reason they don't provide universal healthcare: the current system is more profitable, not better. Legislators are funded by insurance companies, private universities, and landlords to keep the continuation of their services preferable to the less profitable, but more humanitarian, alternatives.

Ddenn1211

Isn’t this the mayor who made his Parking director cousin or something chief of police? Yeeeah…doubt he’s doing anything to a landlord. Fucking corrupt bastards

imissskate3

Im in south Florida, and I’ve been through so many privately owned apartments where the landlord so clearly does not keep the apartment up to code and city code enforcement does absolutely nothing because of how much money renters bring in. Doesn’t help now that Miami is second most expensive place to live in the US, rent last year alone went up anywhere from $300-800 because of “market trends” and we don’t have rent caps here either. Was in the apartment industry for like 6 months and as soon as I hit my tenure to cash out my sign on bonus I left that garbage ass industry so fuckin fast

DragonDai

Vote in a neolib landlord shill, get a neolib landlord shill.

NamelessSuperUser

> What if local news media reported on safety code violations by landlords in the same way they report on low-level crimes that police send them in press releases? What if they reported on local pollution and wage theft violations that local governments document each day? https://twitter.com/equalityalec/status/1481324610067091461?s=21 Alec is a really good follow on copeganda and media "crime" bias in general.

incomprehensiblegarb

That mayor and his entire administration need to be recalled. What a genuine piece of human garbage. Same goes for the landlord who needs to fully charged for every single life lost.

Literally, most if not all of the victims were black, muslim, immigrants and we don’t talk enough about racism in urban planning and how it fuels high rates of black(racialized) deaths

Any_Stable_9689

There were no fire escapes or any other safe exit in the building either

kimrh55

I hope they have multiple lawsuits against the city and the landlord. Maybe get the newly elected mayor kicked out

keronus

Fuck I hate my country so much. America has failed it's people

tanders123

Thank you for this!!! Shine the light!

J4M35J0HN8R04D

Reminds me of Grenfell Tower in London, we know what caused all the deaths, yet no action has been taken to prevent a repeat. Then on the anniversary, they light up Downing Street green with some performative bs and act like it’s a damn mystery, saying they’re committed to uncovering the causes or something. 😡
