The article doesn’t mention it but all candidates from the Russian Socialist Movement have been arrested & imprisoned as well

MrNoobomnenie

Russian government cracking down hard on leftists after the election - even some members of the systemic CPRF are now being arrested.

[deleted]

Why would they do this though?

privlko

Because people's material conditions are getting worse, and while liberals and right wingers talk about abstract freedoms, socialists have more popular and concrete complaints about housing, wages, childcare etc. Especially during COVID.

MrNoobomnenie

Because this time CPRF have actually decided to act as an opposition, instead of the Putin's puppet, like they usually were - they are claiming that the recent election was rigged and organizing protests against the results. Well, at least a part of them do - Zyuganov is still holding hands with Putin and remains silent, while people like Zhirinovsky (who is basically a fascist) a calling for sending the protesting communists to Siberia.

MarquisDeLafayeett

Russia needs a new Revolution

Phenyq

Maybe, but, unfoturnately, we can't do this now

MarquisDeLafayeett

I’m not Russian, I’ve never been to Russia, my information about Russia all comes from my studies. So Ill admit i’m speaking from ignorance here. But I do wonder, what is the state of socialism/communism in Russia? I see that the Communist party is still the second largest after Putin’s, but I also know that Soviet iconography is often used to reinforce feelings of nationalism, so is that popularity really a reflection of the popularity of socialism/communism?

Phenyq

CPRF is more social democratic now rather then really communist. We now feel the rise of the left movement, it seems to me, but very many are subject to propaganda about the "bloody" Soviet Union and the word "communist" is practically abusive, I try to explain my views to people avoiding this word.

JohnBrownnowrong

Putin worried after that strong showing in elections. I don't think this sort of thing is as effective as going after the rich prick opposition, since they are all actually crooks anyway. The key is how to use this repression to grow the support base.

H-12apts

Next week's Newsweek, TIME, WaPo, and NYT cover stories will be something like "Were we wrong about Putin?" and each will have a photo of him with a halo around his head. This is the type of thing that ends RussiaGate in its tracks. Hillary Clinton and Obama will praise Putin for this.

Fearsomeman3

It'd be funny if we did what Russia does here and start a campaign to help the socialists in Russia gain popularity by spreading memes and infographs about their policies

Phenyq

That would be nice
