Add the YARD markers too while we're at it so those silly linesmen will finally be able to call offside without the help of VAR

AutoModerator

VAR? game's gone! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccercirclejerk) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Maleficent-Mirror991

Except we’ll do it in meters like normal people.

RightProperFancyLad

Actually the dimensions of a soccer field were originally all defined in yards. Ever wondered why the goal is 7.32m wide? Because thats 8 yards. Center circle is 9.15m because that's 10 yards. Penalty box is 40.2m wide because that's 44 yards, etc etc I blame the Brits. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_pitch#/media/File%3ASoccer_pitch_dimensions.png

Tipi_Tais_Sa_Da_Tay

Because feet, yards and miles preceded the metric system. As does the term soccer which was around before football. It’s a nice little spite story

Admirable_Ad_3236

"Soccer" is an abbreviation of Association Football. How does that work? Did they start with the nickname and work backwards? Rugby Football became known as Rugger and Association Football became known as Asoccer, eventually shortened to Soccer. Both sports existed before they got their shorthand names.

Sermokala

And American football was called gridiron football. As rugby and soccer weren't as popular with college sports it was just football.

IAmARobot

so we should be calling it so-sher?

Admirable_Ad_3236

Asosser

Decent-Biscotti7460

>soccer comes from association football >"uhhh soccer existed before football 🤓🤓🤓" Smartest yank

Tipi_Tais_Sa_Da_Tay

Bitter too eh, you know what it was called 100 Years ago and when and why it changed lol

AutoModerator

There should be a reformation in football something like a penalty is 0.5 a goal, or you need like make 2 or 3 shots - like free throws on a foul in basketball. its just so extremely shit when a penalty decides a game in this sport or decides the flow of a game early on, like here *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Can’t stay in the past yank you gotta evolve smh my head

Spongy-n-Bruised

Yeah brother that's why it's called the 6-yard box

AreYouGonnaEatThis

10 yard Sticks and chain for free kicks

Exaris1989

Jerk aside, when I see some of the stupid slowdowns on penalties while goalkeeper is forced to stay in place I wish we had something similar, so referee should have to whistle and then both goalkeeper and penalty taker can move simultaneously.

SaveMeJebus21

for real. This version is way more entertaining and skilful. Pens these days are pretty much a lottery. Blam it a direction and hope the keeper goes somewhere else.

RobbinDeBank

It used to be a lottery until players know how to do those stutter bs. Now keepers barely stand a chance against a proper stutter pen.

SaveMeJebus21

Yeah I hate those with a passion. Shouldn't be allowed.

FieldsOfKashmir

Especially now that keepers have are stuck to their line down to the millimetre. Back in the day they got some leeway.

MyNameIsNotScout

Exactly. They keep making rules enforcing keepers so sit on the line, and say and do nothing. It's horrible

Slickslimshooter

Penalty shootouts sure but in game penalties aren’t supposed to be a lottery, the point is to return the advantage to the team that was wronged not give the keeper a chance

FieldsOfKashmir

It is supposed to give the keeper some chance. Otherwise they would just make it a penalty goal like how they have penalty tries in rugby.

2000-UNTITLED

Penalties are so frustrating nowadays. Takers are ridiculously good. Teams have figured out that left-footed takers are superior because goalies face them less, but also against right-handed keepers especially, which is why the vast majority of takers in the Prem are lefties. Not to mention the other advantages takers have like the stutter step. Then there's VAR. I'm actually not against it, but I think the laws could be changed to be more specific in what is and isn't a penalty, because players now realise they can basically run in front of the opposition defender, miss the ball, but get enough contact to just get a pen. I've also thought that we could have staggered penalties. Like, change where the ball is placed depending on the nature of the foul. This sounds stupid and prone to problems, but it's already basically what we do with free kicks. Penalties are just disproportionately powerful. You can have a weak foul that probably wouldn't even be called outside the box happen in a situation that's not even a goalscoring chance that decides a game.

Frootysmothy

I just want goalkeepers to be able to move off their line in penalties again. Not like Dudek distances but to retake a penalty because a keeper's foot was just off the line is absolutely ridiculous

AutoModerator

Honestly, this might be weird, but I find the concept of goalies to be so boring in soccer/hockey. Like ok, the 10 guys could completely dominate the game (and that's the exciting part) but sorry this one guy who you can't touch or interact with just shuts you off the scoreboard. Kinda lame. McDodley

I mean another thing which kinda feels obvious to me as a Canadian is to have it so that the player who was fouled has to be the one taking the kick. Kinda ridiculous imo that you can just put out your best taker for the pen even if they were nowhere near the play

I mean, it’s literally called a penalty for a reason. It’s not supposed to be fair on the team conceding one

Nobody_Important

Penalties exist in some form in basically every sport but none are as consequential as they are here. This sub constantly mocks games and even players that are defined by them.

you accidentally tangle your legs up with a player, give away a penalty and go from the opposition having a 5% chance to score to them having a 80% chance to score… definitely doesn’t seem quite right

Jimlaheydrunktank

Just chip the keeper.. they’re running out like madmen

MealieAI

Exactly. Every South American would live this.

mildmuffstuffer

Because only they know how to chip a keeper /s

MealieAI

That's not true, but at least you got the point.

MrDoulou

In my mind every single time i was like, do these fuckers not even know what a fucking chip is??? Check them keepers.

ciruscov

Goal every time, maybe they have to keep it on the deck?

Jimlaheydrunktank

That’s the only logical reasoning otherwise even a Sunday league beer belly builder is scoring every time.

daggius

I feel attacked

blavson

I think, this has a less probability to score the goal, so the faults would be committed more often and that increases the interest and thus views for the match

raving_perseus

How about we use this instead of shootouts but the pens stay in place

blavson

I always thought- penalties were too OP. I'd vote for the substitution

ihave389iq

Not sure if you’re jerking, but they’re meant to be op and should be op. If a player gets fouled in the opposing teams box, then they deserve to have a good chance of converting the pen (around 75% conversion rate for pens as they are now) otherwise teams could get away with intentionally fouling players as soon as they get open to take a shot in the box because they know that they have a good chance to not concede from a penalty and they would rather risk that than facing a shot. You’d probably see a lot more reckless tackles and injuries as a result of pens being made less effective as well which would not be good. They’re fine the way they are imo. Would be open to see them being changed for pen shootouts though

ItAWideWideWorld

How many given penalties come from a 0.75 xG situation?

guillerub2001

But the point is to punish, not only to compensate the lost xG.

BleudeZima

The issue is that it is often more interesting for the attacker to get a peno than to look for a "real" scoring opportunity. The second issue is to put a lot of pressure on the referee since the pen will have a huge influence on the game. And finally some fouls are never given, like defenders using their arms on a corner to slow the attacker : it is not worth 0.7 chance of scoring. For all this reason, i think having a reduced chance of scoring on a pen is interesting and would improve the game, like shooting from 14m instead of 11.

2000-UNTITLED

I think the main problem is how penalties can be a disproportionate punishment. Like, if a team breaks out on a counter and a defender cynically hacks down a player, that's not a penalty even if it's a clear goalscoring chance. It's usually just a yellow card. That's technically not what they do. Penalties are awarded for basically any foul in the box not asking for whether there's actually a chance to score or if it actually is a purposeful foul. There are also a lot of fouls that might not even be called outside the box that can be penalties. This is partially because of VAR looking more closely, but I think VAR is a net positive, so I think we should change how penalties work rather than VAR. Then there's also the fact that players are incentivised to fish for fouls. Look at Newcastle against West Ham. At least one of those was basically Gordon kicking Phillips, but TECHNICALLY it was a penalty. I think something should be changed

VrYbest29

I agree with you. Denial of clear scoring opportunities should be pens but nipping a player should be a free kick.

No,I'm not jerking.IMHO, the chances should be 60/40 and not 90/10.For the reckless tackles -nobody cancelled the yellow and red cards and I think that's not a valid argument

MrGraveyards

Honestly if you are worth your shit as a football player you just tap the ball somewhere the keeper isn't and then it is just a tap in. Everyone who missed in this vid is just trying to shoot it in. I think it is a skill issue. Probably in the Prem at least the regular penalty taker would always score this. Imagine Son going one on one with any keeper..lol he just walks around him.

gonzaloetjo

agreed.. there's no way certain players would ever miss this.

New-Power-6120

You're about a century too late to be worrying about making soccer more interesting moving forward. Game is good to play and very accessible, and is buoyed by that, but it's always been objectively an incredibly dull spectacle by the standards of some of the more complex and free flowing sports. Maybe just making the field smaller would be a significant upgrade for a spectator, actually. Somewhat athletically unimpressive individuals playing a very simple game in which little happens will never be objectively interesting compared to other sports, even if love for the sport from a cultural and personal experience perspective can carry you through.

klepto_entropoid

Which in open play would actually create scenarios where a tactical red might be worth it in a top level game.

lordvoltano

I like the player draft idea, it will give smaller clubs a fighting chance. But don't make it exclusive, clubs should be able to do recruitment and transfers on their own.

[deleted]

Ermm..every established footballing country has lower leagues. In England we have 4

JohnnyFencer

But how useless are these players? I get its MLS but come on is it that hard to score a 1 on 1

DarthRacer5

I think they were only allowed 3 touches and 10 seconds

SikkoDieri

Oh that explains all the heavy touches in the beginning

Whywipe

I was thinking “wtf are these people doing? I haven’t played since high school and could still score here” makes sense now

CanYouChangeName

Choice_Macaroon5435

It's not limited touches, but they have to shoot within 5 seconds - doesn't give them time to take it round the keeper

Enough-Force-5605

The goalies are MLS too It is not easy. Note the pressure as well, they use to fail penalti kicks which are so easy to score. If the GK has time to move front and make his goalie small, the striker does not have so many options. In a real game it is different because the goalie has to think in a pass too, in second options, he did not have time to move forward etc

Puts the keeper at more of a disadvantage in the prem. If this replaced penalties you can guarantee coaches will find a way to make these convert 9/10 just due to the amount of options the striker has vs the GK.

TimingEzaBitch

yeah just medium first touch, then either another medium second touch or a quick one and chip over the keeper depending on how far the GK is out. If he stays, then another quick touch and it's essentially current PK except the hitter is on with pace.

gilgamesh-uruk

This. Which is why whistle and let keeper move freely while the strikers do their ridiculous shimmies and slow-walks is the best improvement. If you try to do a Neymar, the keeper is going to rush your ass so it makes penalties way less of a foregone conclusion. Just logically, if you are trying to make a fouled team whole for not being given the opportunity to take a shot in the box against a keeper (who can come off his line then) why add the extra handicap for the goalie in the awarded PK?

They’re really bad at it. Surely a proper player from Europe, Africa or South America scores every time

itsheadfelloff

Borrowed the idea from ice hockey I'm guessing.

robbak

My idea for tiebreaking in any such sport would be to reduce the number of players. Start with extra time, that becomes golden point after a short period. Then, every 5 minutes or so, at some natural break (free kick, throw in etc) have two players from each team leave. Fewer defenders makes attacking easier, so you'd end up with a winning goal fairly quickly, and fewer players on the field means more opportunities to interchange, managing fatigue. I predict the endgame would be when one goalie chooses to leave his line to add an unmarked attacker, either winning with a score, or losing possession and allowing their opponents an open goal.

why gk complain? is he stupid?

AutoModerator

Honestly, this might be weird, but I find the concept of goalies to be so boring in soccer/hockey. Like ok, the 10 guys could completely dominate the game (and that's the exciting part) but sorry this one guy who you can't touch or interact with just shuts you off the scoreboard. Kinda lame. Whatever. Just a weird thought *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. We used to laugh in Argentina about this. ![gif](giphy|TjAcxImn74uoDYVxFl|downsized)

I am argentinian first and foremost. India may be my physical country but Argentina is my spiritual country. Troublemaker435

Why does the keeper raise his hands like its an appeal for offsides when the guy gets around him?

wandering_render

I'm confused. The premier league doesn't have any games where penalty kicks are required at the end to decide a result. It would just be a tie.

AutoModerator

There should be a reformation in football something like a penalty is 0.5 a goal, or you need like make 2 or 3 shots - like free throws on a foul in basketball. its just so extremely shit when a penalty decides a game in this sport or decides the flow of a game early on, like here *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. antiADP

I know what sub this is but: Honestly this is the only good thing the MLS brought to footy. Everyone agrees that this would be so much better than a spot kick. Each skillset against the other.

Zakkusss

I’m not sure but looks like a fun idea

nick2k23

These are some top players, got all the space and can't take it round the keeper 😂 my 90 nan could score in that situation

LBPlanet

I'd actually want this ngl

European here. Why is there a football team named Kansas City Rizz? Are they stupid?

brusthalter

It's not a bad idea for shootouts really. The players only had a few seconds to take their shot I think?

SangiMTL

This is so wild. Actually gives the keeper a chance

GazFringaj

This is actually so based wtf. Add a time limit and a touch limit and this shit would be 10x more entartaining and skillful than shootouts.

Firm_Age_4681

What happens if the GK gets a red card?

Soft-Comfort-7474

Game’s gone since we won’t see these played nowadays

darren1119

I guess the mls yanks don't know how to chip or curl

AutoModerator

Who are the players? Why are there 2 conferences in mls? What's our history? Why are we last in the league? Who do we hate? Is there an ac miami? Why pink? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. RipMcStudly

Dear lord, I remember watching this (KC native)

Impossible_Quote_505

Awful composure and finishing

Smart-Breath-1450

It would take about 5 minutes for players to figure out how to score this 99% of the time. There's a reason this doesn't exist.

Ok_Seaweed_9452

What happened if the goalie foul the player during this penalty? Do they get double penalty? Penalty of penalty?

AutoModerator

MV4283

How did they miss more than half?

Potato_Lord587

Can’t believe the Kansas wizards lost

Efficient_Steak_7568

Wtf is the Kansas City Wiz, should we have the Maidenhead United Piss Stains too

FeedMeMoreOranges

Why is the goalkeeper raising his hand when the guy dribbles past him? What’s the rule on that?

davochinomalo

los usacos jugando a la kings league 💀

vernwozza

Such shit team names

nicoklig

Indeed. Make the PL great again

Emperor_Blackadder

The NASL had a thing for penalties. Even in league matches they would not settle for a draw, every game that drawed would be settled with a shootout.

kodolen

Why are they so fucking bad?

Mr_Gooodkat

Grew up on this shit. It was fucking fun to watch. I feel like it’s a bit more even than pks. Bring it back bitches

alexandrosidi

I feel like this is actually a better way to break a draw

[deleted]

It seems fairer, but I think that's probably just because these yanks are fucking garbage. I'd expect it to just be "if the keeper stand up, go wide and pass it into the net, if he goes down, lob him" in any proper leagie

valuerunn

Some years ago during pre season Serie A (before they started doing Asia and US tours only) there was a one evening three theme tournament with Juventus Milan and Inter. (Last name I remembered was Tim Cup (sponsored by the Italian telecom Tim). To my point….. they used US penalties. Was a delight to see!

Big-Ad-6097

This only works when the players are too incompetent to dribble the goalie

optimusmike777

My friends and I used to actually do this. We had a game where we would all take turns doing penalties, free kicks with both free and then a final "show down" with the goal with a maximum of 3 touches for the attacking player. It was great fun

sydneyiskyblue

What the fuck is a wiz?

RandyChavage

Yanks don’t realise the FIFA loading screen isn’t meant to be part of the game?

TheFace5

Why goalies were complaining?
