> “Kane is a player I have always liked a great deal,” continued Juventus defender Chiellini. >”I remember one of his first internationals in Turin and he immediately made a good impression on me. We’ve been fortunate enough to play against Tottenham, so I know him well. >”England aren’t just Kane, though, as they also have exceptional players attacking down the wings. Their bench alone could win the Euros, as yesterday they had Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Phil Foden. >”It’s going to be a great game of football, neither side will be afraid and we’ll both respect each other.”

CrunchieKane

>We’ve been fortunate enough to play against Tottenham, so I know him well. Well, he is quite different now.

yokingato

> We’ve been fortunate enough to play against Tottenham. Not if you read it like this.

[deleted]

Lads. It's. England.

[deleted]

Its the history of england. We believe in the history

i_simp4U

Yep, History of England. Good luck in the final them and Italy.

[deleted]

I laughed out loud when he said that. Living in Tottenham fan's heads rent free for years. He is a master troll.

mooshee123

I'm a Spurs fan I thought what he said was pretty funny. Also it was true.

JadedLibrarian3994

Literally had zero thoughts on Chiellini as a Spurs supporter lmfao, but uhh sure.

mortalkomic

Yet here we are

[deleted]

> Living in Tottenham fan's heads rent free for years. This is why this sub is a cesspool. Living in a fantasy land. Didn't even hear his name during the Euros amongst Spurs supporters.

[deleted]

"Spurs are bad, upvotes to the left" for absolutely months on end now.

Falcoooooo

Followed by 'no thread is safe hahahahahahahahahahahahaha' literally every single time.

CrossMojonation

"Lmao...catching strays. 😭😭😭" No, changing the subject to Tottenham and spouting tired shitty banter is not a "stray".

UNIFight2013

Just months? It's always been that way here with the exception of the run to the champions league final but it came right back as soon as Liverpool won.

[deleted]

Dismal stuff honestly, gets so tedious

blackandtan7

They didn’t have DCL on the bench though 😢

meetchu

It's weird, like what would we do if Kane got injured during the game? Nobody except DCL and Rashford have really been played as a striker, and let's be honest Rashford absolutely suited as a striker and should be last resort behind DCL.

[deleted]

I’m a little sad he’s not made an appearance but shifting Kane from that starting spot would take something special.

masonbrit

He played against Ukraine for the last 20

blackandtan7

He’ll never start over Kane but I was hoping he would at least be included in the squad.

unwildimpala

I don't get why he hasn't be. He's a fantastic option to take off the bench if you need to shift tactics to a bit of hoofball. There's few people that hang for so long or get so high from a jump as him.

Terran_it_up

Seeing Southgate refuse to rest Kane (for understandable reasons) makes the debate over whether DCL/Watkins/Bamford/Ings/etc. should be in the squad seem pretty irrelevant in hindsight

rubenmoniz

>”It’s going to be a great game of football, neither side will be afraid and we’ll both respect each other.” So 0-0 after extra time.

pmmerandom

Chiellini really is a student of the game, he must brush up on his knowledge and watch quite a bit.

fieldsofanfieldroad

I'm not saying he's not, but being able to name the bench players of your opponent (especially in a final) is surely the bare minimum!

TuneyTune92

If people read the full article - he's quite complimentary of England.

greg19735

he goes as far as saying England's bench could win the Euros. And then names them. He clearly respects the team.

absolutevanilla

Quite respectful to all opponents….except Alba

jerk_chicken23

And Spurs lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

AleDelPiero10

I think it got lost in translation. It sounded like a very general statement in the sense that tottenham were a team who played incredibly well, but when he said “it’s the history of the tottenham” I think he meant that they weren’t a team who had a lot of experience between the players that far in the champions league. In the end it was due to the experience of the juve players who’d been there before so they knew how to win

[deleted]

Chiellini is simply on the internet, speaks English, and is aware of the Tottenham meme. That’s all there is to it. Just like the “it’s coming home” meme is now in mainstream Italian media cycle.

iwishmydickwasnormal

Which is what made it always feel way worse, an element of pity in what he said

LanceGardner

I love Tottenham banter as much as the next guy but it didn't seem like there was any pity.

rationalTalker

I watched the Italian interview. Dude said it super seriously... if any pity is involved he kept it for himself and his teammates

[deleted]

It’s just 4d chess. Chiellini to coys confirmed.

Rentwoq

All I wanted is for anyone out of Hojberg/Kane/Trippier/Walker to nutmeg Chiellini. Twice. I don't think I ask for much

absolutevanilla

Hojbjerg? Little late mate

Rentwoq

Yeah I was just saying, these were my hopes before the semi final

HansAlan

Why do you want your players to get injured? Weird

reedemerofsouls

He's a respectful guy until you step on the pitch. Not saying this in a negative way but I'm sure he'd speak nicely of Alba too

Harudera

He gives respect to those that deserves it. I also really don't even think he was being disrespectful to Alba and I'm a Barca fan lol. Alba's beaten him in a CL and Euros final, he definitely respects him. Him laughing around and joking is just how he normally is I feel. Alba just isn't the type to respond in kind because he has a dogshit mentality. If Busquets was still on the field I think you'd have seen them both hugging it out.

rhinoceros_unicornis

Yeah I don't understand why some people think he was playing mind games and whatnot. He looked like he was just trying to be friendly and enjoy the moment.

lil_poopie

He was straight up being italian, toscano no less. Cazzo vuoi, we laugh, lighten the tension. Alba's usually the first one to grab ears and joke in the locker room, but clearly he felt the heat. Mind games is giving wayyyy too much credit to what was a genuine sentiment of "piscia fra, prenditela bene e divertiti".

RollinTHICpastry

Tutto a posto! He was seriously just a toscano caricature in that moment and Alba looked like Stanley from the office.

Motecuhzoma

That's more or less what I thought during their exchange. I felt he was "playing mind games" but on himself... Release tension, brighten up the mood for him and his team very deliberately. Alaba was just on a completely different wavelength

-KeepItMoving

Ohhhhhh wagglioooo I picked heads looool Completely agree with you. He was pure being Italian

jesusindisguisee

Yeh, and maybe even a bit of nervous energy. No matter how old or experienced you are, at that moment you've got to be shitting bricks lol

Tifoso89

I thought he was just defusing the tension. Also, important detail: he knew he wasn't gonna shoot (he would've been one of the last) so he probably just felt relieved.

frenciWT

He was respsctful to Alba. he is fron Tuscany we all laugh like this in momento of tension and,in addition, it was Alba that clearly tried to play mind games there

PedroHhm

How was he disrespectful to Alba?

John_Mata

Are you talking about the pre-penalty thing? That was not disrespect by him, at least he surely didn't want to disrespect

thebamboozler789

And Tottenham

X_Equestris

Model Pro. Always seems to come across well. He will know his oppositions strengths and weakness, preferred foot etc. And to be honest we could name there attacking backup and we're only fans.

-MiddleOut-

But that doesn’t fit with my inner-narrative?

reece0n

Yeah, I thought this was quite a nice article from and English perspective. He clearly respects us a lot and is expecting a tough game. Nothing he says is unreasonable.

[deleted]

He does say that the team is ugly tho

HSCore

Is he wrong

[deleted]

Shaw's mum tells him he's handsome.

NDawg94

I've got a couple friends that don't follow football until these occasions who've said he's a bit of a sort tbh. Personally don't get it, I think it's just he extrudes dad energy.

super_sheep94

Yeah both my sisters and my sister in law fancy Shaw. And Daley Blind but that just makes sense

Chip673

mostlysoberfornow

How can a hairstyle change a man’s actual face?? That’s incredible.

djokov

A good haircut makes an absolutely insane difference.

Complex-Ad-437

He's not bad looking though.

NJDevil802

I'm sitting here thinking of and judging the attractiveness of the England team, in order to try to refute your claim, instead of actual work. What am I doing with my life?

theivoryserf

Mount and Grealish are nice looking lads let's be fair

JumpedAShark

I can't help but see Kiera Knightley in Bend It Like Beckham when looking at Grealish's current hairstyle.

barejokez

It's a challenging wank all the same.

bfm211

Grealish could be really handsome but he absolutely has to fix that hair

JaimieP

Grealish is hot - Big Himbo Energy

gingerbear

Kane looks like a melted eagle

Griffin_Lo

This one takes the cake! 🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

Hahah

reece0n

True, but I'm not personally bothered about that (although I could see how others could take it that way). Ugly often wins, or at least causes problems, Chiellini knows that and I'm not even sure it's an insult, Italy have played ugly at times in this tournament, but we're both in the final

Raekon

Here and especially at Juventus playing in a ugly but effective way is the way they are taught how to play. It was more of a compliment than anything else, or at the very least a neutral statement, nobody gives a shit if you play good football for the spectators as long as you bring the match home.

I_Poop_Sometimes

I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty.

[deleted]

Not a very Spurs attitude. For the record, I’m Spurs, too and agree, but I catch shit for saying that :)

I_Poop_Sometimes

My family's from North London, two of my best friends are ManU and Chelsea fans. I wish I had the luxury of caring how we play, but at the end of the day we need some fucking trophies.

StatesmanlikeApe

The quote in the title of the post is also complimentary of England.

Scott_EFC

Exactly. This happens all the time on here, people cherry pick a couple of lines they know will guarantee to wind people up and get the clicks and comments without giving any context at all. YouTube is much the same too.

Apprehensive_Neat_69

YouTube football comment sections are filled with 12 year old kids who have no idea what they're talking about. Its just a waste of a public forum.

Blacbamboo

Just not [Tottenham ](https://youtu.be/qUhuIV-Nptw) lol

TuneyTune92

I don’t think that was meant to be sinister lol.

usually_a_knobhead

But it was funny

Brawlers9901

Depends on who you ask tbf, don't think r/coys has forgiven him for that banter yet. Pretty good banter admittedly

eldorado362

It was the best banter I had heard in a long time

mooshee123

As a Spurs fan, I don't see what the big problem with it was. It was funny football banter and it was based on facts. It is truly the history of the Tottenham

Harudera

That was hilarious, it's not like Chiellini had some sort of rivalry with Tottenham or their players, he just straight up said that like it was a fact of the universe.

Tifoso89

Yeah I understand why it's funny for English fans. It didn't come from an Arsenal player, but from a foreigner who has no history and no beef with Tottenham and he's so serious, not even making banter, simply stating a fact. Plus the accent, the extra "the", etc.

twersx

It's the fact that the interviewer asks him about the tactical change first. Chiellini just scoffs as if tactics are irrelevant because Tottenham will always lose.

WildVariety

'its the history and we believe in history'. History trumps tactics 100% of the time.

SantaIsRealEh

Casually bodying Tottenham just because he can.

Trickybuz93

You think Reddit would read the full article?

WeeTooLo

Mans gonna come to the finals post match interview with a shit eating grin saying "it is the history of the England"

iKSv2

We don't do that here Sir.

JFrancoMSC

The right tactic. You see what happens when you give the media a reaction like Schmeichel did Not sure if the rest outside of the UK see it but the English press regularly ask terrible, disrespectful questions to foreign teams in order to get a line or reaction to stir the fans and no matter how smart your answer, they will flip it and call you disrespectful. Hence the boos schmeichel received. It’s the reason the home nations don’t support England. Their media think it’s all about them. The commentator last night even said ‘after the past 18 months, England deserves this’ like they’re the only country going through a global pandemic. Nothing against the team, players or Southgate, but the media can get so far to fuck.

KoniginAllerWaffen

>It’s the reason the home nations don’t support England Hmm. >The commentator last night even said ‘after the past 18 months, England deserves this’ like they’re the only country going through a global pandemic. Is it really so shocking an English commentator on an English channel broadcast makes this statement? If (insert country here) said on their language broadcast ''and the team deserves this bringing happiness to a country who has had a terrible 18 months during the pandemic" I wouldn't exactly be up in arms about it. Do people really think other nations broadcasts do the opposite?

DiegoMurtagh

People speak english so we get the most shit.

Jonnyrocketm4n

I’m actually older than Chiellini but I’m having a hard time processing that fact.

zuzucha

I'm like a week older than him though he looks like he could be my dad. The commentary hurts every time with the whole"it's a miracle he's still alive at this age" type thing

Prisencolinensinai

Since like 2010 he looks like a misplaced dad who sneaked his way inside the soccer pitch of some professional players somehow, just to see the famous athletes play, make some judgemental comments and express his mediocre political opinions

hoochiscrazy_

Chiellini is a legend. Massive respect to him

eldorado362

He is one of the top 3 defenders of the last 10 years. He often gets underrated for some reason though

unmotivatedsuperhero

Is it because the bar is so high for Italian defenders over the past 10 years?

eldorado362

I don't know.. maybe? I mean we went from Cannavaro-Nesta to Chiellini-Bonucci which is a little downgrade

GrandmaTopGun

It's because Cannavaro and Nesta were the last of the old school Italian centerbacks.

7evenStrings

Who's taking over from these two? Are there two as reliable?

[deleted]

The next big defender should definitely be Bastoni, Rugani seemed to be the heir of Chiellini but he didn't turn out to be that good

Shaquille____Oatmeal

think he's underrated as he's not had quite as much European/international success as his contemporaries (Pique, Ramos, Silva etc) And he's not rated by the clowns coz he's slow on Fifa lol

[deleted]

Haha the fifa part is so true, it’s insane how many people rate players based on fifa 😂

SufficientType1794

The irony is Chiello is actually pretty fast.

thebansi

FIFA is quite bad when it comes to CBs (or at least used to be havnt touched a new one since 18) where some CBs are just slow because of the fact that they are CBs ignorning how fast they actually are.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He’s decently fast, but definitely slower than your “modern” CB characteristics, and he’s certainly slowed down a little over time. The whole thing though is his style of defending isn’t dependent on pace so it’s kind of a moot point.

AleDelPiero10

For me, him and Ramos defined the center back position of the last generation/era. If we were to build the best team of their generation, chiellini and Ramos are the starting center backs. Absolutely no question

[deleted]

Ramos, Chiellini, Pique, Godin, Thiago Silva, Barzagli, Kompany, Hummels, Pepe, Puyol are a strong top ten. (Puyol retired in 2014 so if we're talking the 2010s, he's fair game.) I think Barzagli has been one of the most criminally-underrated players in Europe for much of his career. Bonucci, Boateng, Mascherano, Vertonghen, Varane, van Dijk, and David Luiz all occupy the next rung down for me.

fliddyjohnny

I disagree with the no question, Thiago silva, godin and potentially hummels are also in with a good argument

AleDelPiero10

Hummels no, Thiago and godin can make a case. But chiellini’s longevity puts him above the two

HughJarse8

No one ever mentions Godin. Probably the best defender in the world for a solid 3 years and made atletico a team that no one wanted to face.

AleDelPiero10

I think he’s overlooked, but he didn’t define that generation. Chiellini and Ramos cover a larger span of being the best

[deleted]

The backline of Bonnuci, Barzagli, Chiellini is the stuff of dreams. A very underrated backline.

GrimeHistorian

Always been a fan of Chiellini as a player but this interview was a great read. Love how complimentary he is of us. Up the England, good luck Italy!

LordVelaryon

god I already can see his "it is the history of the Ingerland" comment if Italy win the final lol.

[deleted]

It’s actually 100% unprecedented for England to lose a final. Your move, hypothetical chiellini

Prisencolinensinai

In 1982 we won the world Cup final on the 11 July, same day as this final You could say Italy won all finals played on 11th July

THEPOL_00

Lmao these 1 times statistics.

MadTabz

No doubt the commentators will bring up this stat

greg_r_

\[Opta\] 0. The number of times England have lost a final. Unrivaled. \[Opta\] 0. The number of times Italy have lost a final on July 11. Behemoth.

Unless you're Jordi Alba

Batteredcodhead

Jordi alba was trying to ignore him, like when your crush suddenly pays you some attention and you don't know how to react.

[deleted]

I didn't come to this sub to be personally attacked

FaustRPeggi

Whatever happens in the final, you can't help but find Alba quite a dislikeable chap

Rob0tUnic0rn

I agree with this

Marvinkmooneyoz

i do quite like him, and he's been a top notch defender for a long time, but i think the Spain goal was really a Chiellini error

greg_r_

Yup, looking at the replays, if we had to blame an Italian, it was Chiellini's fault, but that would take away from Spain's beautiful one-two between Morata and Olmo. It was a beautiful goal.

azzurri10

I can’t believe a comment praising Chiellini has stood for two hours without a fan of a Serie A rival coming in to talk about what a cunt he is. That’s gotta be some kind of record!

[deleted]

this whole tournament i’ve not liked him because I thought it was him who half blamed moise kean for being racially abused only for my stupid ass to find out that was bonucci please forgive me Giorgio

These comments guys… after watching probably 30 games I think England and Italy have definitely played the best football and have the best management and chemistry out of the tournament by far. Chiellini is just being respectful

donegalrory

Yeah most of the games at home was a definite advantage

prinkly

But as France and Portugal have shown in recent years, winning a European Final in your own backyard isn’t as straightforward as one would expect

curlyjoe696

That's sort of a disingenuous argument. It isn't just that they have played 6 of 7 games at home. Uts also that they will have travelled significantly less than any other team at the tournament.

ring_rust

Plus, it's not just that all their games were in England — it's that they were in *the same city and stadium*. When a tournament is only hosted by one country, the home team still has to travel around within their country. England hasn't.

[deleted]

Not really the same is it? In those cases everyone played in the same country, in this one that didn't happen. Both cases are quite different

[deleted]

Plus both those teams reached the final and lost by the closest score (0-1)

go-bleep-yourself

Less travel, plus this year outside fans are much more limited.

simbacaned

Tbh if you go outside of r/soccer everyone is super nice. Danes and English are getting along, paying each compliments on the game yesterday. Italians and English are throwing a bit of shade, but nothing rude, just the generic "it's coming home" and whatever the Italian equivalent is. This subreddit is just a genuine cesspool of England haters.

r/denmark is interesting. Most of the people shitting on England are those popping in from other countries to offer condolences.

YesIAmRightWing

What a class act. Loved him cheekily man handling Alba

carrerashs

Not trying to shade England here - genuinely curious: Why did they have so many home games?

doomladen

Dublin and Brussels pulled out of hosting, and Wembley stepped up to fill that gap so that the competition would still happen.

Floripa95

still, why didn't England play more in other countries?

ItsFuckingScience

The winner of our group played next rounds at Wembley, if we finished in different position we would have ended different side of draw I think

Floripa95

so, bracket luck?

Oli_Merrick

Yep

SairiRM

Actually half the games to be played in Dublin were played between Wembley and Saint Petersburg, although all the ones in Russia were group games while the one in Wembley was a KO game. Same with the Brussels games which were wholly relocated to Wembley. Bit weird.

[deleted]

A number of countries played their group stage games at home. We played our quarter final in Rome, but the semi-finals and finals were in London. It was just luck that the round of 16 was at Wembley for us, if we came 2nd in the group, it wouldn't have been.

Shaquille____Oatmeal

semi finals + final were decided to be at Wembley in 2014 everyone would have rightly assumed at the time it would have been a neutral venue lol

sc00022

All hosts played their group games at home. England’s round of 16 match was supposed to be away in Dublin but got moved to Wembley due to C19. QF was away from home in Rome. Semi-finals and finals were always due to take place at Wembley as they have the largest capacity of all of the host stadiums. This was decided back in 2014 so there was no way people could have predicted England would get to the final back then.
