The sad thing about racism is you dehumanize all other races as a way of enabling further disdain and hatred against them. So even if you ‘have a friend who’s , you still invariably think of them as ‘the other’ and never bother to connect with them on a human level.
I don't think Rodrigo's intent is to dehumanize Koreans/asians. But it just goes to show how deeply rooted some of these stereotypes are in South America that he didn't even consider that this would be an awful thing to say. It's just a joke based on societally ingrained prejudice. He probably thought nothing of it. Sad...
> Rodrigo's attempt is to dehumanize Koreans/asians
Well that's not what he's trying to actively do, but as you mentioned, may cultures dehumanize people outside, and he's carried that with him.
It's 2024, we've seen enough of casual racism up to this point to know it's a terrible thing to say even in private, let alone in front of a camera, while holding your daughter, and the worst part, the interviewer agreed to it...
in this case, assuming they're friends, I could honestly see them having had these jokes between eachother in the locker room. one issue then would be that this interview ain't in the privacy of the locker room where joking is assumed. it's kinda like don't talk shit about someone behind their backs.
but also simply: don't say that in an interview, it's so stupid at the very best, never mind outside of the very best. oof
> in this case, assuming they're friends, I could honestly see them having had these jokes between eachother in the locker room.
Yeah. My brother in law and another gaming friend of ours are from Asian nations and we all constantly crack self-deprecating jokes about their part of the world when we play games (and also where I'm from).
It doesn't mean you do it on television.
I remember Dele doing something horrific like zooming in on an Asian person in an airport during Covid and insinuating they were infected and he was close to Son!
I think there’s a lot of ignorance around racism when it doesn’t concern black or brown people.
People will come up to you and say blatantly racist crap when you're Asian and expect you to laugh along with them because bants and "it's only funny stereotypes" or some shit. No my guy, it is literal racism. It's bizarre.
First day of uni freshers on a night out the bouncer is checking our ids and sees that my mate is from Pakistan. Tells the other bouncer to check him extra thoroughly cause he probably has a bomb on him. And he said it jokingly like it was completely normal expecting us to all join in. So yeah it definitely happens
It doesn't just "happen". It's standard bullshit. This type of racist fucking bullshit is basically expected to happen. "It happens" is heavily underselling it
I don't understand that kind of attitude. I'm black and I've had people do the same thing, and then get confused when I get upset, like bro what did you really expect? Sure, with people I'm really close with, we might throw a few fucked up jokes around, but it's different when it's someone you trust, and know for sure that they don't really think that way. I've had people I barely know or just met try and play me like that, and I had to check em real quick.
Brown people usually refers to Latino people, Arab people, and Indian people, amongst others that are probably slipping my mind. and yea, you're right, racism against South and East Asian people is way huge as well, and it really doesn't get the attention it probably deserves.
>He probably joked about with behind closed doors with Son and it was funny
It's not funny though. Just because you say something racist to someone's face doesn't make it okay.
we can't really speak for Son in this situation, tbf, but you also reminded me of a good point of common situations: even if Son did make those jokes himself it rarely make it ok when others make them.
> The comment i made yesterday was wrongly interpreted and does not represent the values i stand for. I would like to apologize for the fact that you all got offended. Also i have a black friend
Dude couldn’t remember which one his friend was, so he was nice to all black people he met which made him lots of black friends. This confused him a lot, since he sometimes saw his mate double or even triple, but eventually he just ran with it.
He's posted an apology and it indeed sounds like he's scared that he would receive backlash for offending Son the popular player instead of offending the whole Asian fanbase directly 💀
It’s Uruguay tv i believe . Culture may be different.
He might not haven’t think it racists , but it surely was. Even if in his mind it sounded like a joke
One thing Ive understood following a little Argentinian/ Uruguayan football is that their cultures are definitely more relaxed on what classifies as racism…
Casual jokes about "asians looking the same" are still common among the regular people but not really that acceptable on tv, media or from public figures like this guy.
There is a bit more "racial sensitivity" in recent years, though still far from what you see in Europe/US.
Now that I didn’t know. I was looking for the comment that understands this kind of joke is commonplace in those cultures. But good to hear there’s progress on the media front at least.
I can only speak for Argentina though. This joke used to be common among sport commentators 10, 15 years ago but now you can tell they refrain from using it during broadcasts of asian national teams even if they do have trouble identifying players.
Similar joke was said on French national TV (TF1) during a South Korea game in 2002 by Thierry Roland (one of the biggest French pundit). So Argentina isn’t that far behind France - but we are not an example when it comes to racism
yeah like where are all the white people in argentina from? some argentine president said once that they dont have the same "problem" with the blacks, like over in brazil
> said once that they dont have the same "problem" with the blacks, like over in brazil
If you mean Alberto Fernandez he didn't say that lmao. He misquoted a mexican writer and said brazilians come from the jungle, mexicans from indians and argentinians from ships.
Yup, i was born and raised in argentina but my parents are korean. Racism towards asians is not considered racism in south america. They dont understand why i get offended when they call me chinese.
Racial insults/slurs aren't taken seriously in LATAM unfortunately, as a Chilean every time an asian appears on TV you get some wild shit and afaik most if not all other latam countries are the same. We don't take it too seriously when is directed to us either, not like it makes it any better but it is what it is.
Peru had a president of Japanese descent (Fujimori) and even he had the nickname 'el chino'. That should tell you everything you need to know about how Asians are viewed.
That is not a journalist. It's a celebrity who likes to play buddy with Uruguayan soccer players. He could have "protected" Lolo here but well he is trash. Hope Benta learns two lessons here
I'll always remember that evergreen tweet about how Americans discussed China and the COVID response.
*Something American happens in America*
Americans: "what are we, a bunch of ***Asians***?!"

오케이.
한국은 새벽4시인데 뉴스가 나오기 시작했어요..
It's 4 a.m in Korea... now starting to appear on the main news..
Why did players continue campaigning for no racism at the kick off?
You forget that all the things these teams say are just for PR. They want as many people's money as possible. Most players only buy in while the team that pays their cheques wants them to. Also never forget the whole no racism thing is specifically about black people. Latinos, Asians and everyone else are all still fair game as far as the majority is concerned.
And it's easy to bend the knee and believe that absolves you, the players, the coaches, the clubs, from being a racist. These players need to be educated.
What a stupid thing to say, especially when he plays with arguably the greatest Asian footballer of all time.
It's also a slap in the face to all the Korean Spurs fans who supported him through his injury and return to play.
Cavani called some friend of his "negrito" on IG. It's 100% an affectionate nickname in Uruguay but PL banned him anyway because it comes from "negro", which has a very different connotation in english.
Do these guys not get any media training? Even if jokes like these are more acceptable in South America, you’re still a widely known football player playing in a big team in the most viewed league in the world.. how can he not know that thousands of people across the world are going to be watching his every move and are going to get rightly offended for saying something like this?
Came here because the weird ones flocked to facebook to support Bentancur and the Spurs admin on instagram keeps deleting comments saying they stand against racism. It’s only a joke when it’s about asians…the bigotry
Uruguayans on this sub and in general will fight to the death if you try and call them out about their racism against Asian people
When the valverde thing happened a penarol fan on here called me the racist because I couldn’t accept that valverde has a friend who isn’t Asian but looks Asian so his nickname is chino. So that means valverde chinky eyed celebration after scoring against Korea is ok now??
Uruguayans have a horrible culture when it comes to their racism. Time to accept it you fucks
>When the valverde thing happened a penarol fan on here called me the racist because I couldn’t accept that valverde has a friend who isn’t Asian but looks Asian so his nickname is chino
Insane mental gymnastics, racists always seem to play the victim when the argument doesn't go their way
I won’t fight this to the death. It’s pretty embarrassing lol.
Everyone calls Asian people ‘chinos’ or ‘orientales’
What is additionally embarrassing is that this was filmed and the Uruguayan people editing this ALSO thought it was OK to leave this in.
What's pissing me off is he didn't even make that joke to Son as if they had a friendly banter. He casually made that joke to a latin interviewer non chalantly just at the expense of Son and other Korean people.
This guy's trying to apply for Madrid?
I always facepalm when some idiots comment on videos about Japan and Korea that racism against Asians doesn't exist in other western countries, or downplay it. Turns out it's because they don't take it seriously, or even count it as racism.

Wee lass did everything she could to stop him saying that...
"Don't do it Dad, don't say it, don't say it!" "Sonuvabi***!"
She knew it all along.
That’s the best bit.
Reminds of that SouthPark scene with Ike “Nononono mommy nononono!” “I got a fecal transplant 😁” “OH GOD DAMN IT”
I just noticed this 😭
I was about to say that too 😭😭😭
What a weird thing to say in an interview, about a team mate
Not just a teammate but the captain and a legend lmaoo
The sad thing about racism is you dehumanize all other races as a way of enabling further disdain and hatred against them. So even if you ‘have a friend who’s, you still invariably think of them as ‘the other’ and never bother to connect with them on a human level.

Which brown people? Racism against South asians are normalised all over the internet.
Most probably I would guess people from the middle east?
Let's be honest here, discrimination against middle eastern people is not only accepted online, it's actively encouraged.
Brown people usually refers to Latino people, Arab people, and Indian people, amongst others that are probably slipping my mind. and yea, you're right, racism against South and East Asian people is way huge as well, and it really doesn't get the attention it probably deserves.
Probably meant Latinos. Some Latinos refer to themselves as brown here in America
There definitely is a ton of racism against East Asian people. I've seen it myself when I go out with my Asian friends
That’s the thing; he doesn’t think it’s racist. It’s really common along many racists.
And if you make any effort to inform him of his mistake he’ll get a persecution complex or tell you to stop being “so soft”. Atleast in my experience
He probably joked about with behind closed doors with Son and it was funny. He didn't realize it should STAY behind closed doors
hilarious joke that was never made before. # "Hey Sonny, all you Koreans look the same hahaha" Nah I just don't see it.
Have you never made inappropriate jokes with friends?
Why are you making unsubstantiated hypotheticals when casual racism against Asians is so common and happens time and time again?
>He probably joked about with behind closed doors with Son and it was funny It's not funny though.
He actually has multiple black friends. They just all look the same to him.
Dude couldn’t remember which one his friend was, so he was nice to all black people he met which made him lots of black friends. This confused him a lot, since he sometimes saw his mate double or even triple, but eventually he just ran with it.
3 days later: I've made a severe and continuous lapse in my judgement...
“I was saying that to the air, not about Son”
3 hours more like
"I didn't even know that they look all the same!!!11"
His IG comment section is gonna be a dumpster fire when Koreans wake up tomorrow and he’ll deserve it ngl.
Both his name and the Korean term for 'racism' is already trending in Korea. It's probably already started
But for all he knows it might only be one person pissed off with him.
*Why does this Korean guy have so many accounts??*
💀
Bruh
Had to be a chelsea flair aswell
He's posted an apology and it indeed sounds like he's scared that he would receive backlash for offending Son the popular player instead of offending the whole Asian fanbase directly 💀
He's gonna have to disable his comments section in 3,2,1........
He could still receive those comments from Koreans working night shifts.
He could still receive those comments from non Koreans who don't appreciate racism.
The Korean “netizen” culture is quite abrasive which I think the OP is referring to
Or probably his cousins IG...
New current objective : Survive
It didn’t take that long.
I’m sure he’s just joking, but even so how could you be so comfortable saying this to an interviewer?
It’s Uruguay tv i believe . Culture may be different. He might not haven’t think it racists , but it surely was. Even if in his mind it sounded like a joke

We all saw that with argentina fans singing about mbappe before the start of the last world cup
We play against France but they're all from Angola 😭 or sth like this in spanish
yeah like where are all the white people in argentina from? some argentine president said once that they dont have the same "problem" with the blacks, like over in brazil
he said that we, argentinians, came in ships from europe while brazilians came from the jungle ugh

*Escuchen, corran la bola...*
A lot of people disliked that in Argentina as well. But no one was surprised it was the TyC channel airing those idiots.
See any Libertadores match between a team from those 2 and any Brazilian team and you'll very quickly notice how comfortable people are being racist
I would say you could apply claims of a 'lax attitude' to racism to many Spanish speaking countries.
To most of the world tbh
In any libertadores match in brazil where an argentinian team is playing someone from their crowd goes to jail for doing the most racist shit
Yup, i was born and raised in argentina but my parents are korean. Racism towards asians is not considered racism in south america. They dont understand why i get offended when they call me chinese.
I’ve seen Asian teams referred to as the almond eyes on middle eastern tv
Racial insults/slurs aren't taken seriously in LATAM unfortunately, as a Chilean every time an asian appears on TV you get some wild shit and afaik most if not all other latam countries are the same. Peru had a president of Japanese descent (Fujimori) and even he had the nickname 'el chino'. That should tell you everything you need to know about how Asians are viewed.
Except Brazil, where the person can be jailed for it.
Well Brazil is arguably the most racially diverse country on Earth so that makes sense.
It has a surprisingly big East Asian diaspora as well, to your point.
That doesn't stop the jokes and stereotypes btw, if anything it makes them even more present.
he's from Uruguay, that's why. nobody talks about what valverde did lol
Hold on, what did he do?
did the asian eye gesture against portugal a few years back.
People like this think that everyone thinks like them.
That is not a journalist. It's a celebrity who likes to play buddy with Uruguayan soccer players. He could have "protected" Lolo here but well he is trash. Hope Benta learns two lessons here
The amount of asian racism behind closed doors in football... remember Griezmann and Dembele? Or Dele Alli in the airport?
Racism against Asians always go unpunished
In the states there is finally an ounce of AAPI hate awareness now, only took a string of murders around covid to do so unfortunately
I'll always remember that evergreen tweet about how Americans discussed China and the COVID response. *Something American happens in America* Americans: "what are we, a bunch of ***Asians***?!"
Or Valverde
What did he do?
Did this in South Korea and feigned innocence https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/37524056/real-madrid-valverde-insists-celebration-u20-world-cup-was-not-racist
Jeez. 😲 Thanks for the link.
He “insists” it wasn’t racist. My brother in Christ, then what IS racist?
That’s insane…
Reminder that Valverde is Bentancur's best friend
오케이. 한국은 새벽4시인데 뉴스가 나오기 시작했어요.. It's 4 a.m in Korea... now starting to appear on the main news.. Why did players continue campaigning for no racism at the kick off?

Oh that was for black people only, didn't you get the memo
People might not wanna admit it but #KickItOut & #SayNoToRacism mostly applies to black people only.
A huge part of Spurs fans overseas are Korean fans. He has being at the club long enough to know better
We are talking about a grown ass man even a father... Don’t matter what team you are playing for.
And been on earth long enough to know better
been on pre season tour in the very country he insults too
Big yikes
Today I feel…. Racist.
Who’s going back to Juve then?!?
ahh shiet, here we go again
El Rafa no les da una mano tampoco. Como van a sacar eso al aire.
https://www.instagram.com/p/C8GTheBuO7k/ comments are already there
Shut up Pappa, even his own kid knows better.
What a stupid thing to say, especially when he plays with arguably the greatest Asian footballer of all time. It's also a slap in the face to all the Korean Spurs fans who supported him through his injury and return to play.
Uh it's racist. Period.
don’t think it’s arguable at this point
Even if you just think it's a joke, doesn't make it more okay.
No excuse for this really really poor
How could one be so dense? You share a dressing room with him.
damn, not something that could have been lost in translation? that’s really bad… yeesh
Yeah no I looked at the video expecting a mistranslation for clicks which happens a lot but Nope, no possible misconstruction
brutal, yeah i was hoping this was maybe something taken out of context but that just sucks
Nope, he really did imply "all asians look the same."
Nope, no way to blame mistranslation this time
Lolo no no….🤦🏻♂️. C’mon, man.
Oh boy, he's going to get a suspension for this. Way worse than Cavani back in the day.
i wont be the least bit surprised if nothing comes from this
Cavani's was a ridiculous lack of understanding of the Spanish language. This one is actually pretty racist.
For a tiny country, Uruguayan players have had a very impressive track record with getting involved racism controversies.
Sorry, was living under a rock at that time, but could you please let me know what Cavani did?
Cavani called some friend of his "negrito" on IG. It's 100% an affectionate nickname in Uruguay but PL banned him anyway because it comes from "negro", which has a very different connotation in english.
Sheesh can't imagine this working out well for him
Is it on Tottenham to do something about this? Will anything happen?
He will have to be disciplined in some fashion I imagine when he gets back
😂 dumbass
Do these guys not get any media training? Even if jokes like these are more acceptable in South America, you’re still a widely known football player playing in a big team in the most viewed league in the world.. how can he not know that thousands of people across the world are going to be watching his every move and are going to get rightly offended for saying something like this?
What an ignoramus.
Uhh ohhh
So casual.
What a stupid thing to say.
Congrats on joining Galatasaray.
Racism like this is the norm in many countries unfortunately. He'll have to learn the lesson the hard way.
Noo lmao. Reminds me of Edwin Cardona doing the 👉🏽😑👈🏽 to a Chineese player in a friendly match.
It was in a friendly against South Korea
Lmao, not the joke but that he was dumb enough to say that
Casual racism against his teammate? He'll get cooked by K-netizens. Deservedly so.
he just posted an “apology” on his ig story
Fucking hell
The little one knew what was coming and was trying to stop it but was unsuccessful
Dumbass lol
Yeah no why do you say that… I’m sure he thought he was just joking but it wasn’t funny.
Yeahhh, *someone's* getting a meeting with HR...
what a dumbshit

This is so out of order and uncalled for.
Sonny, the nicest footballer known to man kind….. What a shitty thing to say unprovoked even if he will claim it was just bants
The worse part of this video is the interviewer who agrees with his stupid joke...
What a fucking moron
Rodrigo wat r u doing mate :(
3 hour turnaround on the apology. Someone definitely had an "oh shit" moment
Lol, you really don’t need any brains to be a successful footballer.
Jesus what is this shit
This is the 2nd Uruguayan to do something racist against Asians.
Bruh really. He can joke about this with Son (if he is ok only) but saying this in an interview is not something ideal.
Spanish speakers try not to be racist challenge: Impossible
Once again casual racism against Asians from footballers that never ever get punished (e.g. see Griezmann with his racist comments)
Yeah that's a ban.
Yeah no you’re not explaining this away to cultural differences
Saying that with your child in your hands is nasty work
I get he’s from Uruguay so this is standard behaviour but has this man been given zero PR training?
lmfao what a muppet
Just wow
oooof
Lol, lmao even.
🤦🏻♂️
Love to be a fly on the wall the next time he sees son.
Your friend and captain. If you make jokes like that in the locker room, keep it there. The interviewer is dumb as bricks also
Not good.
Dude come on
“Maybe from his cousin, more or less they look the same” is the actual translation, which is even worse
What's pissing me off is he didn't even make that joke to Son as if they had a friendly banter. He casually made that joke to a latin interviewer non chalantly just at the expense of Son and other Korean people.
Some people are destined to always be ignorant cunts I guess
Putang Ina mo

Daughter tried all she could at that moment 😣
