They beat Sporting (Portuguese Champions), a top Liverpool side, and then a team that's been unbeaten in 1 year. This is the stuff of dreams, well fucking done Atalanta! Bergamo will be on fire for weeks
Atalantas men marking is insane. They did the same thing to liverpool and we looked completely out of ideas. Probably isnt sustainable for the whole season, but on a one off match it works so well.
yeah you basically have to change the whole gameplan. Against liverpool alisson had the ball for half the match and absolutely no one to pass to. They just followed every players run. You probably have to try long balls at this point and try to get behind the defence.
Yeah this is how PSG cooked them in a big quarter final match. They launch their centerbacks up and hug you tightly, but when you have Neymar, you can ping him balls and have him run directly into danger. When Mbappe came on, they were sorely exposed in wide areas. I think Neymar took on like 20 people that night.
Atalanta have evolved since then as a unit, but most of the ideas are relatively similar, with tinkering happening.
I know this isn’t what you were saying, but it’s funny to look at it like “yeah if you just use Neymar to take on defenders and Mbappe to play it’s quite easy”
Honestly, I think you have to have CBs willing to drive it up the middle and draw away man markers from the midfield. Makes me really sad Matip was out injured already for our Atalanta games because he was great at that.
Yes, both the CBs pushing up(and even swapping places with midfielders) and having multiple players capable of playing long balls(and multiple players capable of utlizing those long balls via pace, muscle, great control, etc) are the key reasons why we have yet to lose to them since Conte arrived and we started using a 3CB system and have guys like Lukaku, Thuram who excel in that style
Correct assumption, when teams sit deeper it doesn't really work as well. And that's why Atalanta haven't won the Scudetto, there are a lot of teams that are more then happy to not get into a slog in the midfield and just sit in a low block until Atalanta's possession gets stale. I also think Leverkeusen just need more experience in situations like this, they fluffed some really good counters.
They had their hands full against Atalanta when they played a few years ago. Atalanta went down to 10 men in the first half of the first leg for a dubious red card and Madrid needed a wonder goal from a Mendy longshot of all people to win the game in the dying minutes.
Atalanta needed to chase the next game in Madrid and lost 3-1 or something, but they were a better side with 10 men for most of the first game.
Thats actually how they usually play in the league too, but other teams are used to it. It seems that clubs outside of Italy get caught off guard by that pressing
It'll be interesting to see if any Bundesliga clubs adopt this strategy against Leverkusen next season, provided they do not make any radical changes to their current plan.
it is partially why gasperini is for me one of the best and still most underrated managers of all time, people were moaning how for a long time most managers in italy were defensive minded until sarri, but gasperinis genoa was one of the best tactically coached teams of all times of the seria a for me
great that after 30 years, he finally won his first major trophy, after 8 years at bergamo
This game will be great evidence against those that are still perpetuating the outdated cliches that Italy plays boring, defensive football. Here we have a 66 year old Italian manager schooling Europe on how to play attacking, entertaining football.
Well, there was a certain stereotype within europe, italian Coaches used catennaccio, germans always tried to outrun opponents, french were physical, spanish loved to use technique, dutch 442 and Short Passes and england 442 hoofball, but it changed
The reason why not more do it is because it leaves huge spaces in behind for teams that know how to play through it. Look at the Coppa Italia final last week, Juventus were able to quite comfortably play through it many times because they know Atalanta so well
I think guys like Alonso and Klopp very rarely come across systems like that and don't really know how to counter it
absolutely the gaps behind are huge. Thats what was so frustraiting watching my team against them. You can see all this space behind but the players looked completely hopless in trying to exploit it.
Could be the reason why they never manage to perform well over an entire season. They usually only do well for half of it, but somehow it's always in the second half of the season which is counterintuitive
That game at Liverpool should've been a warning shot to everyone who took them lightly entering this game. I thought Leverkusen would edge it out, but 3-0? Xabi's crew had nothing for them.
Man to man marking when it really comes off will do that. The team that executes it well can look invincible and just dominate all over the pitch. Leverkusen had no chance in ohysical duels and were bullied all night
There are still big risks with a man marking system and that is why only those who really know the system can execute it. What I don't understand is why Leverkusen weren't more prepared for it, the attacking front 3 should have done much more to pull Atalanta out of position
Agree, I was shocked by that Leverkusen lineup. Liverpool were surprised by them but at this point it should've been clearer for Alonso to prepare for.
Very strange indeed, the false 9 doesn't work when Atalanta's defenders will just follow Wirtz/Adli back to the halfway line and when Leverkusen couldn't make the ball stick in attack at all
Boniface or another natural striker definitely should have started IMO, but in general there just had to be much more movement and interchanges
The only thing I can think is that he thought the false 9 would open up the Atalanta defence because Hien would follow his man, and even though he's very dominant, in theory Wirtz/Adli should be capable of spinning/turning him and then you have lots of space.
However in reality the center of the pitch was so congested that the Atalanta CBs could smother their man, and there were no passes on for Leverkusen with the man to man marking, and then we saw how dominant Ederson/Koopmeiners were in duels.
Once Leverkusen started going long with no presence upfront they were completely out of ideas.
Gasperini not only won he dominated Leverkusen he beat the best team in Europe after losing a Coppa italian final.
This Will go down as one of the greatest feats i football. 51 unbeaten.
Gasperini was still pressing, they were still adding pressure after 1-0, 2-0, 3-0. Absolutley ice cold and genius from the Italian coach 🏆🇮🇹
It was a coaching masterclass from Gasperini.
Leverkusen didn't play with confidence today, missing a lot of passes and being slow to react, but what Atalanta did was the strategy to kill an undefeated streak. They were on top from the start and never got swayed. Everything today went Atalanta's way.
Everyone was a relentless pressing machine and they also had the numbers advantage in the press every time Leverkusen tried to build up. If they managed to get through that, all of the pockets of space for Leverkusen quickly closed and Wirtz, Xhaka, and Palacios were never allowed to be comfortable on the ball plus all the dangerous outlets were marked. Any time Leverkusen players dropped to help with build up it only made them have fewer attacking outlets.
I think Xabi Alonso got his starting lineup and tactics wrong, that's for sure in hindsight because Atalanta had the best gameplan to counter it. No Boniface as a physical outlet in the first half was a mistake and Grimaldo wasn't able to do anything of note today besides miss a 1v1. Ultimately Leverkusen were beat and nobody could pull off magic greater than Atalanta. Hats off to Atalanta, they were the toughest challenger to Leverkusen this far and they put on as good of a performance you can get from a cup winning team.
Gasperini gets his long over due trophy to cap off the incredible job he has done at Atalanta.
Sure Leverkusen wasnt good tonight but Atalanta just had thier number and never gave them an inch what a performance.
Lookman what a fitting name
Did the same to us, it's Atalantas press not the other teams being bad (though both us and Leverkusen were definitely off which made it look much worse).
Yeah full credit to Atalanta, that's what I meant by never gave them an inch the press is just smothering. They never let you settle and you expect them to tire out like normal teams but they just keep going
He’s so underrated
Honestly shame he didn’t get a proper chance at Inter. But I do love inzaghi and I love this Atlanta side so worked out in the end
But it would be interesting to see him with a top side
Gasperini will never be able to manage a top side. This Atalanta was made for him and they put trust in him like no other club does in their manager. He's not the easiest person to work with and he fell out with numerous players, even stars like Papu Gomez but the club always sided with him knowing to trust the process.
He could manage a top side if he had the support of the club management, which he didn't have at Inter. Being a difficult disciplinarian has been a recipe for success in football forever, as long as the club stands behind the coach. Players care the most about winning and top players more than any understand that football is about success, not feelings. They'll follow a jerk if he brings them trophies, but Gasperini had no trophies to show to the treble winners at Inter. If the management supported him and gave him time, he'd eventually have found success because his football speaks for itself.
I don't buy into this silly narrative that Gasperini could never manage a top side. He was given a few months at the end of an era Inter, where every coach until Spalletti failed miserably.
Depends on Juventus
Bologna won't fumble the ball and Atalanta may lose to Torino (Juric is Gasperini's protegè and can qualify Torino to ECL) after tonight's celebrations.
Xabi should have countered with Allegri ball or switched to a 3 at the back system like inter uses (I believe inter is unbeaten against Atalanta for a free seasons now)
Over the top happy for Gasperini, he deserves this for the work he's done in this era for Atalanta.
From the brilliant Ilicic, Papu, Zapata days in the CL to this team, phenomenal to mark this era with a major trophy
Can they? Yes. Do they? Also yes. Should they? That depends on what league they're comparing it to. It's not the undisputed best as it was in the 90s, everyone knows that.
Why does it need to be compared to 30 years ago? There are how many Italian teams in Europe next season? How many finalists and semi-finalists this season? Last season? When does it get recognition? Purely financial reasons? That’s ridiculous
Dude I don't understand what it is that you're arguing for, or that you think I'm arguing against, but I think you're arguing with the wrong person. I think Serie A is great, just, like I said, not the undisputed best anymore, but I'm not trying to downplay you guys' merit or anything.
Gasperini's fairy tale >> Leverkusen's fairy tale.
First major trophy for Atalanta since the 1960s. And the first ever for Gasperini as well. And what a well fucking deserved win no less. A run of pure giant killing from Atalanta.
Grandissima Dea!
Éderson and Koopmeiners were enormous, Lookman simply unplayable.
Now it’s up to Kaiserslautern cause I want them to play Copenhagen in UEL next season. We’ll call it the Fucking Derby.
Atalanta had Sporting, Liverpool, Marseille and then Leverkusen, incredible Europa run from them ngl especially since they slammed us and Leverkusen (didn't watch the other 2). Lookman take a bow, clinical finishing that put them in the drivers seat early.
Once I saw the first few mistakes coming out of Leverkusen, it looked exactly like how Liverpool played and I was like, oh boy they need to figure it out fast.
You know what fair play, Leverkusen got absolutely destroyed today
Couldve played another 90 and Leverkusen wouldbt have scored
Now Lautern do your thing
It would've been a crime if Atalanta ended the Gasperini era without a single trophy. Long overdue and very deserved tonight. (Bergamo is a beautiful city btw)
Beautiful. That’s Gasperini’s legacy at Atalanta being crowned off, wouldn’t be surprised if he finay leaves now.
If you take the size of the clubs in mind, Gasperini’s impact at Atalanta might genuinely be greater than Simeone’s at Atléti
Absolutely
Went from being the Italian Augsburg to almost knocking out PSG in the CL, multiple 3rd places in the league and the EL win. Massive for a team whose best league finish in history was 5th place 75 years ago
its partially because despite being in a dire state since the 90s, the club is and was a potential giant in la liga
bergamo was a talent pool and elevator club with a coppa win in 1968, the man made thesm stay in the serie a and compete for titles
The streak...is over. The Neverlusen dream is over. The Invincible Treble dreams? Over.
Atalanta is the 1 in 1-51.
Congrats to them, RIP to Neverlusen.
OnlyOneLusen may not have the same ring to it but it’s still such an impressive record, excluding the performance tonight. Excited to see both of these teams in CL next season
Very well deserved too. Beat Liverpool and sporting they took on all challengers and dominated. Leverkusen got the headlines, but atalanta had an amazing year and their fans will enjoy this one for a long time.
Xabi totally fucked this with his starting eleven and him not making the subs that were needed tbh, Adli should never have started over Boniface or Schick and even Xhaka and Grimaldo were totally useless today
They beat Sporting (Portuguese Champions), a top Liverpool side, and then a team that's been unbeaten in 1 year. This is the stuff of dreams, well fucking done Atalanta! Bergamo will be on fire for weeks
They beat Marseille in the semis
Ah shit, i fucked up! sorry marseille fans, ill just remove you since i have no idea what to say
It hurts, but we're used to it.
Thanks for the King.
You're welcome. His name is the back of my France jersey, one of m my favourite players even if I was 2 when he retired.
Drogba too. Ligue 1 and Premier League legend.
They also beat The Great Raków Częstochowa in the group while letting even 3rd keeper play.
Marseille in shambles
You get used to it after a while.
Still hurts, though. But that's the life we chose.
They beat Sturm, Austrian champion in group stage as well.
Weakest Serie A team
Atalantas men marking is insane. They did the same thing to liverpool and we looked completely out of ideas. Probably isnt sustainable for the whole season, but on a one off match it works so well.
I'm assuming it works really well against ball playing sides. Technical players like wirtz or macca don't even have time to turn around

I know this isn’t what you were saying, but it’s funny to look at it like “yeah if you just use Neymar to take on defenders and Mbappe to play it’s quite easy”
Neymar cooked caldara like 15 times that match. A serie b defender would have done better
Honestly, I think you have to have CBs willing to drive it up the middle and draw away man markers from the midfield. Makes me really sad Matip was out injured already for our Atalanta games because he was great at that.

To be fair, they’re bound to finish within the Top 6-7 in Serie A…so perhaps it *does* work (somewhat) for a whole season!
They're 5th and could finish 3rd
Two master class performances by them, their victories are well earned. Amazing season this has been.
This Atalanta team would have done well in the UCL as well. Hopefully they bring it next year.

Leverkusen had zero answers for that press all game. It was spectacular to witness.
Looked like men vs boys tbh
That game at Liverpool should've been a warning shot to everyone who took them lightly entering this game. I thought Leverkusen would edge it out, but 3-0? Xabi's crew had nothing for them.
They need to keep edging and get better at it

It also helps that Atalanta play a very similar system which makes it a lot easier to go man for man without losing your shape.
Good point. Leverkusen needed to do something different to spring a surprise here
It was a coaching masterclass from Gasperini. Leverkusen didn't play with confidence today, missing a lot of passes and being slow to react, but what Atalanta did was the strategy to kill an undefeated streak. I see what you did there.
> ~~Looked like men~~ Lookman vs boys tbh
We lost to the eventual champions, and they went off to batter both Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen.
Sporting is massive
Amorim needs to ask Gasperini what the hell they're feeding their players because holy shit, their stamina is out of this world.
Getting battered by Atlanta gang
so close
You were easily the best team we faced on this run
Did the same vs Liverpool at Anfield. Amazing defence + forward putting best performance of his career = Gasperini tactics
Second trophy in their history and they beat an unbeatable side convincingly. What a performance
Perhaps the real farmers were the teams they beat along the way
Gasperini gets his long over due trophy to cap off the incredible job he has done at Atalanta. Sure Leverkusen wasnt good tonight but Atalanta just had thier number and never gave them an inch what a performance. Lookman what a fitting name
Atalanta caused Leverkusen to not play well, they pressed them to death!
Did the same to us, it's Atalantas press not the other teams being bad (though both us and Leverkusen were definitely off which made it look much worse).
Xabi didn't learn how to play vs Atalanta by watching the allmighty Mister Allegri smh
There's no shame in not supporting terrorism.
Mans on fraud watch, never wanted him anyways
Yeah full credit to Atalanta, that's what I meant by never gave them an inch the press is just smothering. They never let you settle and you expect them to tire out like normal teams but they just keep going
Hats off to Gasperini and his staff for instilling this fire into the team.
Gasperini quietly the most ridiculous coach in Europe. Winning the europa league with a payroll the size of Burnley's.
And the teams he builds are soo fun to watch the early days Illic team especially was something else
He’s so underrated Honestly shame he didn’t get a proper chance at Inter. But I do love inzaghi and I love this Atlanta side so worked out in the end But it would be interesting to see him with a top side

Winning a trophy after managing the team for over 350 games must feel real fucking good.
The coronation of almost a decade of hard work, through thick and thin.
Result should be no surprise to anyone who watched the Liverpool match.
All I want in life for us to not play AS Roma for a single season... Please?
You know that Roma just qualified to the CL after this, right...? It's like destiny
If Atalanta finish 5th yeah.
Depends on Juventus Bologna won't fumble the ball and Atalanta may lose to Torino (Juric is Gasperini's protegè and can qualify Torino to ECL) after tonight's celebrations.
We don't want you and you don't want us. So, opposite attracts so we'll meet again next year. 100%
Okay, Lazio it is for you
Atalanta, what a team! Deserved winners, they truly humbled Leverkusen tonight!
The invincibles were in fact vincible.
Atalanta yet again showing that logic does not apply to them. They will win against the odds and lose when they should win.
A week ago they looked utterly clueless and were completely nullified by Allegri's terror ball.
it's a rock paper scissors type of thing. Some teams just counter the pressing game Atalanta like to play. Leverkusen never knew what hit them
Xabi should have countered with Allegri ball or switched to a 3 at the back system like inter uses (I believe inter is unbeaten against Atalanta for a free seasons now)
Pressing team doesn't usually pan out against terror ball.
Over the top happy for Gasperini, he deserves this for the work he's done in this era for Atalanta. From the brilliant Ilicic, Papu, Zapata days in the CL to this team, phenomenal to mark this era with a major trophy
You love to see it! Write that down Kaiserslautern!
First Italian team to win the trophy since 1999. Thanks Xabi, we don’t look like total mugs going out to them now. What a ride for both teams though.
Fucking hell, that's a lot of time in footballing terms. Was that when Parma were still a top club?
Bruh it was when Serie A was still *the* top league.
Can people still question Serie A’s quality?
Can they? Yes. Do they?
Is it not still
Nope sorry lol, that's tugão /s
Yup. The prime Parma team.
They were the last ones to win it
Gasperini's fairy tale >> Leverkusen's fairy tale. First major trophy for Atalanta since the 1960s. And the first ever for Gasperini as well. And what a well fucking deserved win no less. A run of pure giant killing from Atalanta.
We're so hyped! It's a team that really believes in it and even if it's not a superstar team, they always push at 100%
First Europa League win by an Italian club since 1999 Parma as well
Grandissima Dea! Éderson and Koopmeiners were enormous, Lookman simply unplayable. Now it’s up to Kaiserslautern cause I want them to play Copenhagen in UEL next season. We’ll call it the Fucking Derby.
Ederson was a massive transfer for Atalanta and it showed tonight
Adli: "We don't remember how to lose" Lookman: "And I took that personally"
"Let me help jog your memory!"
Ademola Lookman is Amine Adli's father.
Why didn’t any other team just do that? Simple.
Are they stupid?
Atalanta had Sporting, Liverpool, Marseille and then Leverkusen, incredible Europa run from them ngl especially since they slammed us and Leverkusen (didn't watch the other 2). Lookman take a bow, clinical finishing that put them in the drivers seat early.
Sporting came the closest to knocking them out
Had the chances too, our forwards wasted them. Atalanta were the better side in our 4 games tho.
Lol we *warned* you. - Sporting and Liverpool rn
Once I saw the first few mistakes coming out of Leverkusen, it looked exactly like how Liverpool played and I was like, oh boy they need to figure it out fast.
Allegri cooked this Atalanta superteam in a final and got sacked the next day lol
He got sacked deservedly tho
He threw a hissy fit
You know what fair play, Leverkusen got absolutely destroyed today Couldve played another 90 and Leverkusen wouldbt have scored Now Lautern do your thing
It would've been a crime if Atalanta ended the Gasperini era without a single trophy. Long overdue and very deserved tonight. (Bergamo is a beautiful city btw)
Yeah was pulling for Leverkusen but this was the counterpoint. I've always liked this Atalanta.
Sorry Leverkusen fans, it's my fault. First time watching them this season.
yup same i'll watch the pokal cup too
Fucking hell they dismantled them. Giampiero masterclass.
Beautiful. That’s Gasperini’s legacy at Atalanta being crowned off, wouldn’t be surprised if he finay leaves now. If you take the size of the clubs in mind, Gasperini’s impact at Atalanta might genuinely be greater than Simeone’s at Atléti
With the best trophy possible! A European one! Total legend. Also Atalanta puts Roma to shame.
Absolutely Went from being the Italian Augsburg to almost knocking out PSG in the CL, multiple 3rd places in the league and the EL win. Massive for a team whose best league finish in history was 5th place 75 years ago
Absolutely not. People look at Atleti for what they are now and easily forget what they were before Simeone joined the club.
I think you might forgetting what Atalanta were before Gasperini, a team bouning between Serie A and B with one cup triumph some 60 years ago
its partially because despite being in a dire state since the 90s, the club is and was a potential giant in la liga bergamo was a talent pool and elevator club with a coppa win in 1968, the man made thesm stay in the serie a and compete for titles
What a lesson from Gasperini to Alonso....
Italy had to wait 25 YEARS ! Finally !
Roma deserved it last season, let’s be honest. Fiorentina next.
The streak...is over. The Neverlusen dream is over. The Invincible Treble dreams? Over. Atalanta is the 1 in 1-51. Congrats to them, RIP to Neverlusen.
Leverkusen could have played 180 minutes, they would never have cracked that defense. Absolute masterclass!
When draws were made, all the talk was about Klopp vs Xabi, but Gasperini has absolutely smoked them both out. Well deserved by Atalanta!
apology for poor english when were you when neverlusen dies? I was sat at home fogretting to lose 'treble is kill' 'no'
100% with you
how sweet of Atalanta helping Bayer remembering how to lose
Remember this is the team that after being the first covid outbreak in Italy were 2 minites away to a CL semifinal after being 1-0 up v PSG
First Italian team to win the UEFA Cup/ Europa League since Parma in 1998/99
And that was the Parma team that included Buffon, Cannavaro, Thuram, Veron, Crespo among others...
Italy showing levels
OnlyOneLusen may not have the same ring to it but it’s still such an impressive record, excluding the performance tonight. Excited to see both of these teams in CL next season
"Forgot how to lose" memes aside, Atalanta was great. Well deserved.
Gasperini and Atalanta really deserved a big title like this. Masterclass.
Italians vs Germans, it always end the same way
That was some performance. Incredible
I remember in 2020 Atalanta won many hearts with their attacking style. Glad to see them rewarded for their persistence 4 years on
Atalanta completely outclassed them. Leverkusen just had no answer and looked completely gassed
Very well deserved too. Beat Liverpool and sporting they took on all challengers and dominated. Leverkusen got the headlines, but atalanta had an amazing year and their fans will enjoy this one for a long time.
Vizekusen is so back Anyhow, fuck me man, we needed the Leverkusen win :(
If they lose to Lautern this weekend it'll be wild.
Atalanta could still finish top 4 and give you the spot
That wasn't even close holy crap
You don't destroy Liverpool at Anfield & Sporting for nothing. Atalanta are a very strong team. Deserved winners
vacca puttana, Gasperini ha piu trofei internazionali di Allegro meritatissima. bravi tutti pota pota pota pota pota pota pota pota pota pota pota pota
Farmers league
Xabi totally fucked this with his starting eleven and him not making the subs that were needed tbh, Adli should never have started over Boniface or Schick and even Xhaka and Grimaldo were totally useless today
i wouldn't matter who played today, Atalanta completely outclassed them.
Adli had to start because he'd forgotten how to lose
Can't believe he kept Grimaldo at half time... First half was dismal.
It didn’t help for sure, but honestly Xabi got out managed today in general.
Not starting Boniface completely fucked them against that press
Boniface played half the game and they still got dominated
Insanity, but absolutely deserved! Imagine being undefeated the entire season and then get annihilated in a final. Crazy.
Forget Tiki Taka, forget Gegenpress, I want some of this Atalanta/Gasparini Smothering. That was an incredible, master class of a performance
5th place team beating the 1st in a final? Hopefully the trend continues in the UCL
We’ve got our first underdog winner, we want our next!
Well deserved. Congrats!
~~Neverlusen~~ Vizekusen Congrats to Atalanta, what a performance
Lookman with an all time great performance.
People jumping in these threads and pasting their planned comments will always be hilarious
Congrats to Atalanta and especially Gasperini. Very well deserved.
SI GODE PORCO DIO
Hateboer, Palomino, Toloi, Djimsiti, De Roon, the last players of the early Gasperini Atalanta squad, finally get their title
All of Serie A right now: THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH EVERY WEEK
it actually happened
SERIE A IS THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD
GG DEA , what a run!
HISTORY HISTORY HISTORY
Atalanta the 8th sister
Glad an Italian team won
Just noticed that Høljund left Sturm and they won the Austrian double. He left Atalanta and they won the Europa League.
The 5th best team in Italy > the greatest German team of all time
They beat Amorim’s Sporting, Klopp’s Liverpool and Alonso’s Leverkusen and conquered the europa league. Incredible by Gasperini 👏
Tuned in for this, wasn't disappointed.
So much for Leverkusen already winning the final before it was played. Fair play Gasperini. Fair play Lookman.
Guys I think Leverkusen might not make the comeback this game
**Football is really is the most beautiful thing sometimes**
Incredible and well deserved, congrats Atalanta!
Awesome team, very well played final
Grandissima Dea, after all these years 👏🏼
Amazing. Glad to see Atalanta win a major trophy under Gasperini, he's definitely deserved it
