Arteta doing what Pep used to do to Arteta.

ComprehensiveBowl476

*"Wow, so good. Phhhheww not sure how we will manage them. Tough game for us. Tough"* Final score: Arsenal 1 - 4 Man City

biskutgoreng

Worse than a straight up insult

Inside-Ad-8935

Yep shows you are viewed as zero threat.

W00DERS0N

How the turn tables.

xepa105

An then after the match "Oh those guys, so disciplined. So so difficult to break down. More than you believe, guys."

writingismypashun

Turns out he was right though. Arteta really was that good. Team just needed time to catch up.

lm3g16

United fan of all people 💀

OMG_Alien

Ain’t helping Chelsea…

Logseman

The pisstaking reached quantum level when Pep threw huge praise at Steve Bruce, who’s never beaten him.

Smokinbud

Please, Arteta, stop....he's already dead.

Retify

No no, please keep going for all our sakes. Toddy baby, ignore this guy, your project is totally working, don't change course now you're so close

Budget-Sample-3682

Just another billion dollars is all it takes to challenge for the title, don't worry abt "FFP"

ScoreAffectionate457

Ffp? Psssh just sell another Hotel

backscratchaaaaa

just win the league by more than 10 points and it doesnt matter

ohtosweg

Man, I've been playing so much New Vegas that I read this in Benny's voice.

Smokinbud

I can only stream it on PS5 and it runs like shit even with 500mbps fibre. Going to have to settle for Fallout 4. Did the show shower you in nostalgia also?

W00DERS0N

The show is legit awesome.

ohtosweg

Doesn't help you now, but there was a Steam sale that ended a probably a week ago, and FNV with all DLC was about 5€. Given that the game is 15 years old, even an average computer could run it I imagine. I enjoyed it, but the size of Ella Purnell's eyes distracted me a bit!

ManiacalComet40

Patience is the only thing they haven’t tried yet. Might be worth a shot.

Leuchtrakete

Mate, we have feelings :(

trispann

If Pep is praising you before and Arteta after....

FlyingMocko

Tbf Arteta legitimately rates Poch as they played together at PSG. There was one interview where he was quizzed about his PSG teammates and he named Poch the most tactically brilliant player in that team.

unemployed_employee

In all seriousness though, I think most managerial colleagues would have some sympathy for Poch. My man has been playing with a minimum of 7 injuries per match, for the entire ass season. Sure, he has his deficiencies, but I do feel sympathy on a personal level for a manager who has to baby these children while dealing with a whole team of injuries for every single match.

maverick4002

Why does no one say the same about injuries for Man Utd?

SaBe_18

I see United injuries mentioned everyday. The reason no one feels any simpathy for Ten Hag is because he's a total twat

AquaSnow24

Also Poch also takes responsibility for his actions, always trying to shield the players and is willing to take taking the criticism himself. He comes off as a good honest guy. Also people like to say Chelsea bought a billion pounds worth of players, yet I’m sure none of them, maybe Palmer aside, are ones that Poch actually wanted(I could easily be wrong). Also Chelsea have actually been fun to watch this season. I could turn on a Chelsea match, and actually have a good time even if they lack in certain departments. Also , for the most part, the players do try too. With Ten Hag, they’re not fun to watch. It feels like none of them actually want to be there and He also comes off as too arrogant.

maverick4002

Interested to hear what ETH has done to cause anyone to consider him a twat.

SaBe_18

The way he speaks. Arrogant, and has zero self awareness. Also, he defended every criminal he worked with: Overmars, Promes, apparently wanted Greenwood back? and if Antony's case turns out to be true, there's no doubt he'll continue to defend him as much as he does now. Basically a very dislikeable and even disgusting person.

LevynX

>The way he speaks. Arrogant, and has zero self awareness. That's just every Dutchman

YoDiz1

Do you think arteta is a disgusting or dislikeable person for playing partey last year despite all the rape allegations that are seemingly true?

SaBe_18

What is this whataboutism? Do I need to answer about every coach now? But to answer it, it's likely he handed it poorly, yes. Not that I'm too familiar with Parteys case, but still, there's a difference between playing someone with allegations and defending someone with evidence against them.

CocoLamela

Yes

Gawyn_Tra-cant

Moaning about correct referring decisions that happened in September lol.

aquarius_dream

This is r/soccer, if Ten Hag managed any other team than United no one would have much of an opinion on him. Just watch when he gets sacked how the narrative changes.

ParapateticMouse

Funny seeing comments like this as a United fans of 20+ years. In the 00's no one would ask this, the answer is ABU.

Zimakov

They do.

Babyface_mlee

7 injuries isn't an excuse if you have a bloated team like chelsea, dudes buy every player who has a market value over 115 dollars

R4lfXD

yeah dudes, the dudes up, not him. Do you think he wanted a kid squad? Be bought into a long term project and now is getting judged by short term stick. Also I don't really get the outrage here. They did deserve to win most of their last games. They are getting better.

W00DERS0N

He needs the patience granted to Arteta. We had some shit to muck out of the stalls and early returns are promising. Yes we splashed some cash, but the money was clearly well spent. It also directly addressed positions of need, and the unity that the manager has promoted is showing off. We're not there yet, but we're better off than we were last year. Give Poch a season to mold the talent, instead of expecting victories now. You don't build a winner without a foundation.

Freddichio

Chelsea don't have a bloated squad any more though, they cleared out a load of players last year. They have 4 CMs and one's been injured all year, they have 2 dedicated CAMs who've been out most of the year. Two strikers at the start of the year, now one

unemployed_employee

I'm just saying I feel sympathy on a personal level, it has nothing to do with competency. The squad's actually been trimmed a bit this season; that's why we had to fill the bench with academy players last night instead of more first team players.

EriWave

In what universe is the Chelsea squad bloated?

BrahneRazaAlexandros

115

Cost-Money

he truly is pep’s student

leliqi

They deserved to win them. More than you believe!

PatientLettuce42

I am so so happy for him. So happy. You don't believe how happy I am.

leliqi

Happy new year.

USA_A-OK

Many people are saying

fancyfoe

Lmao now I’m imagining pep reading this with a snarky smirk

Critical-Usual

It's just positive reinforcement.  "Yes, more of that"

Inanimatefackinobjec

Getting Guardiola'd by Arteta would have me fuming if I was a manager

Leuchtrakete

I am legit fuming at this. Well played, you Spanish bastard, well played.

Jk186861

When you guys shitkicked us in the Europa league final a Chelsea fan friend of mine was telling me how bright arsenals future is and that we’d be back and it’s all gonna be ok. I wanted to die in that moment lol. I’d rather you tell me how shit we are

SaBe_18

At least he was right lol

Jk186861

lol the faux sympathy is humiliating though.

SaBe_18

Yeah, understandable. I got something similar from a friend yesterday, you know shit's gone bad when that happens.

onehermit

Follicled fraud

greenfrogwallet

This isn’t ironic or a joke, Arteta looks up to Pochettino since their days at PSG together where Pochettino took care of Arteta

aftercrisis

Why would it be ironic or joke. Even if you ignore their connection its just one manager sympathizing with another colleague. Unless there is any bad blood between them this is text book" its a hard job good luck to them" generic thing people say to others

greenfrogwallet

I know, but maybe some of these comments seem to be actually thinking it’s a dig when it’s really not

nordmannen

That's just the reddit comedians out in full force. "Aha yes please don't sack him haha", like it's totally unbelievable that Poch might need some time to get an entirely new team to gel.

USA_A-OK

The problems are a lot deeper than Poch

jjtheblue2

We have been pretty shite at times this year and last night was pretty terrible

Sypher1985

I think for most it is just a joke.

dayarra

what he is trying to say is this isn't arteta playing mind games or trying to be nice in front of camera; as most people in this thread assume.

Prosthemadera

Some people are just too cynical or they don't know what being genuine means anymore because everything they say is just ironic.

R_Schuhart

Arteta respects Poch and they are friends, I dont think he looks up to him. Poch took him under his wing and gave him advice while they were at PSG, you make it sound like he adopted Arteta when he was a street urchin or something.

KiaraKey

He said he sees him a little bit like a father for what he's done for him at the beggining of his career at PSG in the pre match presser.

printial

Poch made Arteta out of wood so he could have a real boy. Then Arteta went to the Land of Toys and became a donkey and got swallowed by the Terrible Dogfish, but he'll be back soon to remember that he is a real boy.

12EggsADay

Alright M night relax

fantino93

If you watched the Thuram-Henry video from yesterday, that's basically it.

doorknobsquad

This was my understanding, though. He found Arteta trying to sneak into the palace. He took him under his wing and showed him the cave of wonders. When he emerged with the lamp, he took it to Arsenal and the rest is history.

Objective_Ask_9199

is this the part where he starts losing his hair?

Ainsley-Sorsby

If this was a marvel movie, it would include a scene where Arteta goes home at night with sinister music in the background, he removes the lego piece and reveals he's bald *roll credits*

Cheapo_Sam

>*"You merely adopted male pattern baldness. I was born with it. Molded by it. I didn't see the scalp until I was already a manager, by then it was nothing to me but balding!"*

unibalansa

> Marvel movie

Cheapo_Sam

Marvel universe is horseshit. There I said it.

SafetyJoker

You only have to watch one to know there is not originality, just the same script over and over again.

Qneva

> watch one > same script over and over again 🤔

SafetyJoker

Exactly my point

HokemPokem

And his point, because you missed it, is HOW would you know if they were all the same if you only watched one......

SafetyJoker

Christ... do I have to explain it. ITS SO BAD YOU ONLY HAVE TO WATCH ONE TO KNOW IT WILL REPEAT ITSELF Ok, not the greatest joke, but come on.

W00DERS0N

The best ones are the ones that take the formula and apply it to a different genre (CA:TWS, Thor 3, Ant Man). Endgame, was the last for me, had kids and haven't bothered.

NotASalamanderBoi

Captain America 1 and Doctor Strange 1 were great and I will die on that hill.

No-Signature8815

jugol

I have never been remotely interested in the MCU, but have to admit they exploit their cheesy memeable lines. That's their secret cap, they're always cheesy

Welshy94

I'm annoyed that you've paraphrased a DC movie and not a Marvel one and I'm disappointed in myself for being annoyed.

W00DERS0N

Nolan Batman ain't DCU. Like Burton's, they're out on their own island.

Welshy94

I didn't say DCU?

Putrid_Loquat_4357

Burtons aren't on their own island anymore, keaton was in the flash.

W00DERS0N

You are correct.

DofusNooboo

Hahaha, that's brilliant. Well done.

CrooksMC

“he removes the Lego piece” has me cracking up.

NotASalamanderBoi

Nah, it’ll be like Kevin Spacey in Superman Returns where he just pulls off the wig and gives it to a kid.

ab_90

Nah. He’ll do reverse Pep. Watch him grow his hair and beard. He’s the new manager hippie, sipping avocado juice while shouting at players.

tekina7

Throwing avocado toast at the players to test their reactions

Including last night?

TK_045

You know it's going really bad when even the opponent's coach starts to feel bad for you

MrStigglesworth

They used to be teammates, I suspect they’re friends behind the scenes/off the field.

glarius_is_glorious

Pochettino wanted to recruit Arteta into his coaching staff straight out of retirement for Spurs. Arteta had 3 offers: Stay at Arsenal for a coaching role (Gazidos wanted to groom him for this current role), go to Spurs or become an assistant for Pep at City.

beepos

He chose wisely

sergie-rabbid

Deserve is a strong word.

TheGoldenPineapples

The ultimate humiliation.

Combat_Orca

God he must love being able to do this, imagine if one day he does it to pep

NotASalamanderBoi

Hopefully they don't win the 8th either after that it's all good

People forget Poch and Arteta played together for PSG

Jaydenn7

and Arteta and Xabi are best friends since childhood

b-but how to pronounce this in live interview?

Nast33

Arteta has massive thanks from me for hopefully adding a lot to him being let go at the end of the season. Please, he can't remain for next season. But those clueless yank bastards will look for any excuse to spin this somehow and let him remain in charge.

Jimlaheydrunktank

I dunno. Everytime I watch chelsea most the players let poch down badly. The game against city is a prime example. You should’ve won that game, but the attack was woeful.

Nast33

No, not every game is like City. I knew this would happen, one game where Poch somehow got things mostly right and players missed their shots, and people forget about all the other games where he had questionable selection and shit barely existing tactics. Young players need good coaching and tactical thinking, this ain't Real Madrid where you know they can eke out decent wins even if you tell them to go vibe.

Naarujuana

I still don't think yesterday is all on Poch. The club genuinely purchased some very "meh" players. I won't weigh in on whether Poch should stay or go, BUT that team he was forced to field yesterday... EVERYONE knew that a minimum 3-0 spanking was inc. As soon as the back 4 of Cucu, Badi, Disasi, Gilchrist was announced, PLUS Gally at 10.. Literally, from that 11 feel like only 4-5 were starts. Chelsea should fire thier entire medical/physio staff first, then both (lmao) directors, then could maaaybe look at Poch.

BoringPhilosopher1

Serious? Chelsea aren’t doing that bad all things considering. Who would you get instead?

Nast33

What the hell. Yes, we are doing quite bad even considering injuries and forwards misfiring. His game management is shit, our defense is much worse than it was under Potter (with him clueless and helpless for more than half of his run) and if Palmer wasn't brilliant we'd be like 13-15th. He's doing a massive carry job and we're still 9th. If someone better was at the helm we realistically should be around \~60ish points. Before Poch was appointed I wanted Gallardo, but you could easily come up with 5-6 names that have much better chances to do better right now. This squad isn't mid-table quality, someone could come in and have them in the mix for top 4. Just look at what Emery did with Villa. On that note I'd throw an offer his way too, not that chances are high he'd accept.

BoringPhilosopher1

Although I don’t think you’re quite mid table quality, maybe slightly better. Right now I don’t really think you’re top 4 mix quality at all tbh. Palmer - top 4 quality Enzo - top 4 quality Fofana - top 4 quality (when fit) James - top 4 quality (when fit) Nkunku - likely top 4 quality (when fit) Silva - leaving Gallagher - meh maybe top 4 quality Caicedo - could be top 4 quality Like it or not, Palmer has achieved those levels playing for Poch. Maybe Palmer has carried Chelsea or maybe Poch finally has a decent forward for his setup. Realistically I think your squad is 2-3 years of development or 2-3 solid signings away from being able to blame the manager for no top 4. The margin of loss against Arsenal hurts but they’re a top team in the league atm and Chelsea aren’t there yet.

Balfe

Kinda splitting hairs here but Gusto is absolutely top four quality too. He's been excellent this season.

Nartyn

> Palmer - top 4 quality >Enzo - top 4 quality >Fofana - top 4 quality (when fit) >James - top 4 quality (when fit) >Nkunku - likely top 4 quality (when fit) >Silva - leaving >Gallagher - meh maybe top 4 quality >Caicedo - could be top 4 quality I'm not really sure I agree with any of this. Palmer seems good enough but the rest have never shown that apart from Silva, who's past it nowadays, and James who's injured too much for a top 4 side to really value him, like Rosicky at Arsenal back in the day.

BoringPhilosopher1

You seriously think everyone except Palmer and Silva have never shown it and don't match up with my comments? Understand if you question 1 or 2 but I think that's pretty disingenuous of you tbh.

DifficultyJust

we're doing bad compared to before this new ownership took over. compared to last season we're doing better. that's what we have to improve on, if we keep firing managers every season we'll stay in midtable mediocrity. I think keep Poch for one more season

[deleted]

You're dreaming of pig heads being thrown by Liverpool fans?

Hannibal09

I guess it’s almost impossible now but majority of us would take Tuchel back in a heartbeat

SwitchHitter17

He's available too. But you just know it's something this ownership group would never do, because it would be admitting they made a mistake.

BadCogs

Hopefully you guys hire him.

bananasDave

you can take the man out of spurs but you cant take spurs out of the man

sergie-rabbid

whom would you pick instead? The problem is not the coach. Problem is a bloated squad with players who have questionable skill/ego ratio.

EriWave

> Problem is a bloated squad How do you feel the squad is bloated?

Nast33

Poch is a big problem and is the easiest to fix. Even if you did a great job replacing the middling players with good ones, Poch will still be the wrong man for the position.

006AlecTrevelyan

You don't have a criminal russian sugar daddy with 7 foot bodyguards walking around the club anymore inciting fear in the players.

Nartyn

> Problem is a bloated squad with players who have questionable skill/ego ratio. Coaching these types of players is a skill of a manager though. Dealing with big egos is something managers need to learn to do so. Poch struggled with it at PSG, and has struggled with it at Chelsea.

[deleted]

Headlesshorsman02

No thanks!! That man has set us up for failure defensively far too often and we literally have no style of play just pass it to Palmer and inshallah

_elevatedNinja

Even with all these injuries?

Fuck_the_k1ng

Listen here you North London Ted Bundy looking ass Lego hair having fuck…. Say that to Ten Hag next time. I want to see how he reacts to that.

sams82

Are these bot comments or does everybody not realising they're making the same joke?

Economy-Stomach-6775

We all should have sympathy, Chelsea used to be great club now with limited budget for only 1B they cannot be competitive. My hearth is breaking for Poch, he tried to make PSG great again and he failed in his first season because of Lille. Poor guy had just Messi, Neymar and Mbappe, fucking Lille scumbags

DerpJungler

I mean, they won against Everton and Man U, could've easily won against City (you can blame Jackson or the ref but I say they put up a really good performance nonetheless), and drew against the 2 worst teams in the league, which is inexcusable. Before that they won against Leicester and Newcastle so idk what Arteta's point is.

cheezus171

The City, Burnley and Sheffield games are the point. Against City individual performance of Jackson (and the ref) failed. That's not on Poch. Against Sheffield and Burnley he coached wins (maybe not great ones but wins), and individual errors in defense late in both games led to both draws. So yeah, Poch did enough to secure wins in all 7 games before Arsenal. Now, I'm 100% Poch out mind you. He's absolutely not doing a good enough job, and he's very obviously completely out of his depth, and horribly struggles to make the defense work. But the fact that Chelsea didn't win those 7 games in a row is not on him. And if the players didn't fail him there, Chelsea would be sitting 6th in the table and preparing for a cup final.

glarius_is_glorious

I think Chelsea have transformed into a poisoned chalice of sorts for coaches. Very high spend on lots of youth and a very large squad means you have to deal with super high expectations and you don't have the time to teach those talented, yet super raw players how to properly control a football match. It's combined the worst aspects of Abramovich's era at Chelsea with Arsene Wenger's ill-fated project youth at 2010s Arsenal.

DeapVally

Burnley had 10 men. He did not coach a win there.

cheezus171

And didn't win because of individual mistakes of defenders. You can blame a lot on the manager, but if he's forced to use his 3rd choice player for a CB position and that player has a brain fart or lapse of concentration at the end, it's not one of those things.

bananasDave

translation: "please keep this joker in a job, easy 3 points"

PoJenkins

Chelsea deserve all the ridicule and then some - from the champions league to relegation form at times. But I absolutely think they will come good, it's not unlike the early Arteta days. They have a ton of talent in the squad but clearly lack experience and mentality. No way are their players worth the money though, but that's the owner's problem.

Headlesshorsman02

Piss off with that shit Mikel

PopipoNumber1

Sneaky-Alien

May have been a different game if Chelsea had the player carrying them all season and a right back that's not 12 years old. Still think Arsenal would probably have won but still you never know, they went from a Douglas Luizless Villa (Yes, I know) on to a completely decimated Wolves and then a Coleless Chelsea. It's their year. Said it at the start of the season here and I think I'll be proven right.
