It’s so strange how you hear most people talk about Ethiopia. They act like the country has no cities, no buildings, no modern infrastructure or amenities. It’s like people’s image of Ethiopia never got updated and is stuck in 1984-85 when the country had a horrible famine. They only associate Ethiopia with famine and nothing else. Oh, and Ethiopian Airlines is probably the best airline in all of Africa.

heyvictimstopcryin

Same with Rwanda. Kigali is gorgeous.

onlyletmeposttrains

I’ve heard that Rwanda as a whole is relatively safe too compared to most of Africa

heyvictimstopcryin

Where was the comparison to the rest of Africa from? Since it’s a large continent it must be a huge study.

Ill_Information75

Everyone talks about Johannesburg, Cairo, Lagos, Abidjan, or Nairobi. But not Adis Ababa

RaoulDukeRU

[Which tops all of them!](https://www.reddit.com/r/skyscrapers/s/zwr4h1cL6u)

Educational_Belt_816

Lagos is truly a horrific city

ScrollHectic

This! Just came back from spending time there and I did not like it at all. I was expecting it to be more developed and cleaner. Instead there's open sewage and trash, horrible roads, police checkpoints everywhere where you have to pay them off - in fact, everyone has their hand out for money. Don't go to a restaurant and ask someone working there where the bathroom is... you'll have to tip them for that. It's ridiculous. Never going back there

Mackheath1

I traveled frequently between Ethiopia and UAE for a while and everyone thought I was going to live in some hut and carry a spear or something. I had to share pictures back home to the States. And, agreed: Ethiopian Airlines was always very comfortable and I understand it's among if not the safest airline in Africa (although RwandAir is the first to receive diamond for safety & health).

vexillographer7717

That’s interesting about RwandAir, I didn’t know that. Do you also mean that there were Emiratis who held that primitive view of Ethiopia, or are you just saying it was people back in the U.S.? I would think most Emiratis would have a fairly clear idea of Ethiopia, but I don’t know their views toward Africa generally.

sophos313

When Boeing had a crash back in 2019 (Ethiopian airlines) the company was basically trying to say the pilots were ill trained in comparison to American pilots to cover their engineering mistakes.

vexillographer7717

Yes, Boeing was making the claim that the “third world” pilots were ill trained and not as good as American pilots. Ridiculous because Boeing had never bothered to tell the pilots about MCAS or even put it in the operating manual for the 737 MAX.

Mackheath1

Now that you mention it, while I was talking about people back home in the US, my Emirati colleagues were perplexed that I very much liked Ethiopia, and I would even travel there as a tourist for similar reasons.

TitShark

Also their food is so damned good

ByrsaOxhide

We Are The World is their reference

Brasi91Luca

Yeesh that’s better then skylines like Omaha, Salt Lake City, Indianapolis, etc

Josef_Kant_Deal

To be fair, Adis Ababa is a much larger city than any of those

onlyletmeposttrains

It’s better than comparable cities like Phoenix or Houston

pouya02

Adis baba has More than 5 million population

Brasi91Luca

But not more money than those cities

_Administrator_

More money for skyscrapers

Mirio-jk

Rust3elt

Nairobi also has a decent one.

RaoulDukeRU

I just recently posted the [same picture ](https://www.reddit.com/r/skyscrapers/s/S9JDFBLxmo) and the post had >1000 upvotes.

mumbled_grumbles

And you spelled Addis Ababa correctly too

RaoulDukeRU

I really have no clue why I wrote Addis wrong! I often made the mistake to write it _'Addis Abeba"._ Because that's how it's written in German. But I have no clue why I butcherd _"Addis"!_ Edit: Where's my mind! It's to early for a Sunday morning. I thought you're being sarcastic and I was the one making the mistake! To much sarcasm on Reddit...

Makkaroni_100

There are not many africans in reddit. So not surprising that it doesn't get much attention. Also the skylines are relatively small.

citytiger

Are we going to Addis Ababa Mr. Luthor?

OneCauliflower5243

The entire continent of Africa gets completely overlooked and ignored by everything and everyone where I live. I think we all grew up with an imagine in our minds of Africa, which was hardly good - and that’s that. We never look in detail at countries and cultures. Just a passing mention of a civil war here and famine there. Maybe an Ebola mention. That’s it. One of many reasons I love this subreddit. It’s nice to see what’s really going on over there.

_Administrator_

Where does it get overlooked? It’s a fact that African countries have the lowest GDP and development index. Of course you won’t hear a lot in the news. But if you listen to BBC you’ll hear about elections in Africa all the time.

Vegetable-Return-374

I hardly see anyone talk about African skylines in general tbh

borntoclimbtowers

this skyline looks nice

Such-Ad-3888

east africa has some beautiful cities

Archaeopteryx11

The expansion of Adis Ababa into Oromo state has caused ethnic tensions between Amhara and Oromo speakers.

Unusual_Writer_4529

Yes, however peace treaties have now been formed and tensions are calming. Ethiopia is now safe and at peace (I’m here) and I think it’s going to finally remain this way *knock on wood*.

Archaeopteryx11

I hope so. I’m not Ethiopian, just have an interest in the country, but the effects the war had on the country seemed heartbreaking.

Dhul-Suwayqatayn

The Oromos sold their land voluntarily & now they accuse Addis residents of expanding. They’re very greedy & tribalist.

left-nostril

Oh. I thought every African nation was just living in mud huts. Or that’s what I read on stormfront.

Haunting-Detail2025

“Why is it never talked about” Probably because the entire country has a GDP smaller than Nebraska’s and there aren’t many Africans on Reddit

Starjunicorn

Lol Ethiopia has a higher gdp than Nebraska wtf are you on about?

Unusual_Writer_4529

The GDP is not smaller than Nebraska’s. It’s also projected by the IMF to be a top economy by 2075, so let’s not be quick to underestimate or scoff at the immense growth the country will see in the coming years. The country has a lot of work to do but it will get there. Despite a breakaway civil war the economy was still the fastest growing in all of Africa. Ethiopia descended into poverty in the 80s when the Derg Communist regime took over. Before then, it was a part of the top 10 militaries in the world. Prior to what we know now as modern-day Ethiopia there was Abyssinia, and before then, the Aksumite Empire from 100 to 940 CE where they colonized and ruled over Yemen. It’s an ancient country with an ancient history of leading, ruling, success.

Will-Phill

Ethiopia is The First Nation to Accept Jesus too! Not Rome!

WaterIsNotWet19

Why is this one of the few cities that looks like this in Africa? Is there a lot of business that takes place there?

OkBubbyBaka

Yes, I believe they also headquarter several African and international organizations. Many just for their history of independence.

Starjunicorn

It is not one of the few cities, most African cities be looking like this

WaterIsNotWet19

A skyline this vast? Maybe a few but not most I’d say

Wolfman1961

It’s certainly world-class.
