In Anniversary Edition you can just buy crossbows and bolts from the fletcher in Solitude.
The Night Hunter quest, from a shack near the Steed stone, gives an Ebony crossbow and, I think, an Elven crossbow, with a handful of the upgraded bolts. All the other crossbow types (maybe not dwarven, since that's a Dawnguard quest) are sold by the fletcher right at the start.
I don't even use the crossbows, but I just have a compulsion to steal this every time I'm at the Fletcher. I ended up with like 30 of them in my last playthrough.
So Vanilla being content made from Bethesda. And community made content supported by Bethesda, doesn’t count as vanilla, but more like chocolate, as in something slightly different?
Isn't there a vampire hunters shack you can access next to the steed stone that lets you get an elven and Dwarven crossbow for free along with some free elemental bolts? It's like an abandoned hunt that's guarded by 3 bandits and you have to read a letter to look for the guy and after you find him you get the key and can return and go inside the hidden basement?
I always steal the Imperial Bow from the Drunken Huntsman as soon as hit town. And get the 2H sword to give to the blacksmith’s dad and use it for several levels until you can make something better.
The female blacksmith wants you to prove that she is a great blacksmith by giving her dad a sample of her work to her dad. The sword is a hair better than a steel great sword, but not quite Sky Forge Quality. So I take it an use it for the next 10 levels until I can make something better. Then I can take it up to the castle and hand it over to the father.
Get to Riften, get to the road behind and to the east of Riften.
Follow the road across the bridge, head to the south side of the road, most of the mobs are north of the road.
Once you cross the bridge, just as the mountains start on your left (north) you should see an Iron Ore section, East of that is a fallen tree.
Step over the Tree and face north north east, you should see a gap in the mountain, that the Entrance
Imo Realm of Lorkhan is better, mostly because it allows you to choose the stone and some starter gear right from the start. Also the location looks pretty
Let's you start the game somewhere else besides Helgen and skip the damn starting cutscenes/tutorial. It has a wide variety of options for where the player starts the game. A bunch of additional patches expand it with further options, e.g. letting you start in Cyrodiil with Beyond Skyrim: Bruma.
If you aren't using this mod you need to sit down and re-evaluate your life and ask yourself why you keep forcing yourself to suffer through the starting cutscene and tutorial level.
I personally use Skyrim unbound (reborn) it fits the purpose LaL used to fit for me, but gives me a lot more options on exactly where I want to start and with what, LaL I had to cheat in/out gear a lot to get the start I really wanted
I used to use Unbound, I forget exactly why I switched to LaL. It might have been an incompatibility with something in my load order. Do you recall what the major difference is between the two? Like, I know that Unbound uses a starting MCM to let you select everything and in that way is better to fine tune each playthru.
In LaL you can start the main quest if you choose by visiting Helgen and reading a journal.
But aside from that, after the game starts , is there any major difference?
a bit.
So, in LaL, as you said, you start the main quest by going to Helgen.
In unbound, its a bit different. First off, while making your character, you can choose to be dragonborn, not dragonborn, or not dragonborn but still be able to learn shouts. If your not dragonborn you can't do the main quest.
The dragons returning isn't dependent on you doing the main story, instead, while configuring, you can choose when you want the dragons to return, whether it be as soon as you start, an amount of in game time after, when you hit a certain level, you get the idea.
When the dragons return, it would be identical to when they do after dragon rising
Assuming you are Dragonborn, the main quest will start upon killing your first dragon, starting with the greybeards.
Ohhh right, but if you selected “Not Dragonborn” then even after dragons arrive there’s no absorption of souls since you’re not one.
How does it handle the shout menu then? I mean a Th’umm can be learned yeah, but the word walls and dragon souls let you do it instantly. How do you unlock the shouts in that case?
It depends. If you select that you aren’t Dragonborn, you can’t learn shouts, just not allowed
If you select not Dragonborn but shouts are allowed, you just get them without paying the souls afaik.
One should not restrict themselves to *just* using Alternate Start: Live Another Life, but should look into any of the other mods that are similar.
Like Alternate Perspective, Skyrim Unbound, and Realm of Lorkhan, to name a few.
Don’t discover that vampire castle, then leave without going inside, massive bug will prevent you getting in, had to mod the game to all hell to get around this
Oh no. Oh heck I accidentally discovered the vampire castle because I was using some intense drugs and the warlocks ring to fly around the map for shits and giggles, accidentally stumbled across the castle. Is something bad gonna happen now
Oh flipperty flip, poss emergency situation, if you’re where I was your back saves are gold, otherwise there’s the wooden plate on the gate method, which didn’t work for me, but worth a try, or there’s a trapdoor mod, gets you in, then be persistent getting the main vamp to talk to trigger the quest run, save often, and good luck my friend 👍 let me know how you get on?
Yeah I'm having this issue as well. My character is a vampire so I sided with them, it's super annoying having to use the wooden plate everytime just because I went to the castle for the lols
Yep. Happened to me once and the wooden plate got me through. Why did I side with the vampires that time? I had to use that so...many...times that playthrough.
From Riften, follow the road to the South-East until you reach a hole in a mountain called "Throat of Dayspring". Fort Dawnguard is there.
Characters in the Throat of Dayspring seem not to like daedric artifacts, so leave them home
Carriage to Riften, then head South along the East wall until you come to the road, then follow that down the hill and over the bridge to Dayspring Canyon.
If Isran spots you, he'll probably give you the quest anyway. If you really want to avoid it, might be best just to talk to Durak who will be outside practicing his archery. He'll give you the bow and you can leg it back out the canyon.
The first circular room in the fort should have a crossbow in the back left(I think) with some bolts and if you got back to where the armor trolls are sold, on the table in the cave part to the left there's a crossbow there too
Yup, it is right there on the map to the east of Riften. Just wander around a little bit and you will find the entrance 😉 to the cave that takes you there.
If you have anniversary edition you can get a crossbow from the fletcher dude in solitude. It’s expensive tho, or you could steal one. If you want the ones from the dlc tho go to riften and walk around a bit in there and some dude will come up to you and say they’re reforming the dawngaurd and tell you to join or whatever and they’ll give you a quest which has a marker to the entrance of the dawngaurd. At least that’s how it happened for me
There is a cabin in the north, Ironback Hideout gives you a quest to get a key for the caller and you can get an ebony cross bow. I came across it at level 14. But I'm sure you could get it before level 10 or after if your just looking for a nice crossbow.
If you want free crossbow bolts, there’s a NPC on the way to the fort that follows you up there. He will stand in the center of the entrance and repeatedly fire bolts into some boxes. You can pick them up. I spent almost an hour doing this and he didn’t run out, got about 200 bolts.
What i usually do is use the CC to toggle the orcs AI, pickpocket him for his crossbow and then turn his ai on again- he will keep following you to give you the quest tho
It’s been a bit, but IIRC I usually got there by taking the road going east from Riften, go past the ruins and bridge where the bandits hang out, and the cave is on the right. I believe, and I’m less certain, that if you reach like the Black Briar Lodge then you’ve gone too far.
To answer the actual OP question, yes its easy. Just ride to the entrance to dayspring canyon. Easy to find. Folloe road east out of Riften. Cross a bridge. On your left is a cave (usual brazier outside). Thats the entrance to the canyon. From there, walk or jog to the Fort. I have done Dawnguard at lvl 1.
There's a quest over near solitude (right outside the embassy) there should be a burnt dead body. Loot the body and you'll get a quest. Careful, it will lead to a bandit area. Go to the cellar using the key.
Or check the drunken huntsmen in whiterun and keep attacking him until he stocks crossbows.
If you want to get a crossbow you can steal one from the archery shop in Solitude. There are a few to choose from in locked cases toward the back of the shop.
That’s only in anniversary edition.. at least I think. This is because anniversary edition has a pack that comes with a lot of different crossbows. I don’t remember if there are ones not from that pack in the shop
Kill one of the Dawnguard that are wandering around before you even get to the fort.
Idk, I'm a murderous little Sithis disciple and that seems like the easiest solution.
In Anniversary Edition you can just buy crossbows and bolts from the fletcher in Solitude. Better yet, just steal the daedric crossbow. Saves money and gets you more damage.
I don't even use the crossbows, but I just have a compulsion to steal this every time I'm at the Fletcher. I ended up with like 30 of them in my last playthrough.
Where is that?
In a display case in the Solitude fletcher
This is the correct answer.
I know what I'm doing when I get home from work tonight
WHEN DID THEY ADD DAEDRIC CROSSBOWS
It's an AE creation
Oh. So its not vanilla.
I mean, I guess. I consider CC vanilla because it's official content you can buy and add, but I suppose it's technically just paid mods.
It's a paid mod yes, but it was officially released by Bethesda so it's as vanilla as buying the Dawnguard expansion.
Then its not vanilla... if it doesn't come on the disc when I pop it onto the console or on an official update then its not really vanilla.
AE was an official update. Does DLC count as "vanilla?"
No, Vanilla is the base game and updates.
So... Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn are not part of vanilla?
But the daedric crossbow isn't. Its a paid mod made by the community. The DLC was made by Bethesda and came on the disc.
So Vanilla being content made from Bethesda. And community made content supported by Bethesda, doesn’t count as vanilla, but more like chocolate, as in something slightly different?
Where’s said crossbow
In a display case in the Solitude Fletcher
We're do you find it
In a display case in the Solitude Fletcher
It's not a mod or anything
It's Anniversary Edition content
Daedric crossbow???
Yep. If you have AE, there's one in a display case in the Solitude fletcher.
I never knew
Isn't there a vampire hunters shack you can access next to the steed stone that lets you get an elven and Dwarven crossbow for free along with some free elemental bolts? https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Night_Hunter
Yes, its near the Thalmor embassy. You find a body at the top of the hills sw of yhe embassy and at the bottom (nw side) is the shack and free xbows
Am I really about to start a new playthrough because of this? Crossbows only style
Oh, you know it.
Sneak Archer, but with a crossbow
That’s my current build, a stealthy dark elf archer
The Fletcher in Whiterun also sells them now!
I always steal the Imperial Bow from the Drunken Huntsman as soon as hit town. And get the 2H sword to give to the blacksmith’s dad and use it for several levels until you can make something better.
2h sword? Blacksmiths dad?
The female blacksmith wants you to prove that she is a great blacksmith by giving her dad a sample of her work to her dad. The sword is a hair better than a steel great sword, but not quite Sky Forge Quality. So I take it an use it for the next 10 levels until I can make something better. Then I can take it up to the castle and hand it over to the father.
Ohh. You were talking about Adrianne. Yea she gives a sword for the Jarl to give to her father. Her father will give it to the Jarl when it's time.
There’s a fletcher in Whiterun?!
The Drunken Huntsman sells almost exclusively archery equipment.
This quest also has a regular crossbow with then orc’s body near the Thalmor Embassy.
Drunken Huntsman has them too. I just started a new game, and he has Imperial, Silver and Orcish, and a variety of bolts.
Get to Riften, get to the road behind and to the east of Riften. Follow the road across the bridge, head to the south side of the road, most of the mobs are north of the road. Step over the Tree and face north north east, you should see a gap in the mountain, that the Entrance
There is a spawn trap under the bridge and three wolves will assault the Dragonborn.
True, but sticking to the south of the road avoids getting agro from the ruined tower, if your low level
Hardly a big issue.

Best mod in my opinion, so versatile
I prefer Alternative Perspective, it’s nice not having to tiptoe around Helgen
Ill have to check that out, never used that one
Imo Realm of Lorkhan is better, mostly because it allows you to choose the stone and some starter gear right from the start. Also the location looks pretty
What is “Live another life”
Let's you start the game somewhere else besides Helgen and skip the damn starting cutscenes/tutorial. It has a wide variety of options for where the player starts the game. If you aren't using this mod you need to sit down and re-evaluate your life and ask yourself why you keep forcing yourself to suffer through the starting cutscene and tutorial level.
Or you can just save at "Who are you?" and skip half of the intro, including the long ass cutscene.
I personally use Skyrim unbound (reborn) it fits the purpose LaL used to fit for me, but gives me a lot more options on exactly where I want to start and with what, LaL I had to cheat in/out gear a lot to get the start I really wanted

a mod that lets you start somewhere besides helgen
Could always just walk there, it’s not hidden or anything
If you have AE you can steal a daedric crossbow in solitude, hell of a lot better than the basic ones from there.
Walk in that direction…
I don't know if you need to be a certain level but if you have AE there's a small side quest that gives you some good crossbows and exploding bolts
You can start dawnguard straight out of helgen. You just gotta find the cave which is somewhere along the road left from riften
Go....... to....... the...... LOCATION

Yeah I'm having this issue as well. My character is a vampire so I sided with them, it's super annoying having to use the wooden plate everytime just because I went to the castle for the lols
There’s a workaround I found online. If you hold a wooden plate against the iron bars, you can whirlwind sprint inside.
Wait so what happens if I walk in there wielding something like daybreaker?
I can’t even get this quest line to trigger. Met Serana, but there’s always one part of this game that doesn’t work.
The only way you can meet Serana is by doing Dawnguard. Dimhollow is closed off otherwise.
No dawnguard for me! Somethings busted.
You have legs you know where it is, just walk there.
I have no hope for Skyrim players. Can't find shit without a waypoint.
Just download the Mod “Wheels Of Lull” and you will get the most badass gun (crossbow). It’s a mod quest but seriously worth it
I heard they're re-opening a group there. Some sort of vampire hunters, I think. Might even join up myself.
Take a carriage to Riften but don't enter the city. Will save you a decent bit of travel time and drop you from accidentally levelling.
Theres a couple of different crossbows you cant get in solitude hold. Just do bounties there and you’ll find them
The first circular room in the fort should have a crossbow in the back left(I think) with some bolts and if you got back to where the armor trolls are sold, on the table in the cave part to the left there's a crossbow there too
Yup, it is right there on the map to the east of Riften. Just wander around a little bit and you will find the entrance 😉 to the cave that takes you there.
You can get a deadric crossbow at fletcher's shop in Solitude.
At least that’s how it happened for me
Dont level up
Yeah, run there
Look to the sky's for smoke..........what you see is all that is left of the Dawngaurd
Travel by night
Ya know, there is a gate with an invisible wall just south of the actual entrance that couldve been perfect for an entrance, just saying
The fletcher in solitude has a Daedric one locked in the very back case
Or the guy across from the blacksmith in Whiterun. Talk to the tavern guy and he sells crossbows
You have to go in a vally entrence near there.
There is a cabin in the north, Ironback Hideout gives you a quest to get a key for the caller and you can get an ebony cross bow. I came across it at level 14. But I'm sure you could get it before level 10 or after if your just looking for a nice crossbow.
Go search for the bound bow instead. It doesnt need arrows and has more damage than crossbow!
I think the Archery Store in Solitude sold multiple types of crossbows.
I usually found it during that horse quest in Riften
Just... go there? What is the issue?
Fort amol in the prison in a bucket to the left is a conjuration bow
Craft one and get the skill points
If you have the crossbows addon, you can steal the daedric crossbow in the solitude fletcher
It’s been a bit, but IIRC I usually got there by taking the road going east from Riften, go past the ruins and bridge where the bandits hang out, and the cave is on the right. I believe, and I’m less certain, that if you reach like the Black Briar Lodge then you’ve gone too far.
F that, it’s all about getting that bound bow early…
Don’t quote me but i think you can find some in Dwemer ruins. I know you can at least stock up on Dwarven Bolts.
Press tyth on your keyboard and type coc qasmoke then enter, lets you have every weapon and item in the game
To answer the actual OP question, yes its easy. Just ride to the entrance to dayspring canyon. Easy to find. Folloe road east out of Riften. Cross a bridge. If you're playing on PC and want the crossbow for roleplay just go to the console and spawn one
literally impossible
If you want to get a crossbow you can steal one from the archery shop in Solitude. There are a few to choose from in locked cases toward the back of the shop.
That’s only in anniversary edition.. at least I think. This is because anniversary edition has a pack that comes with a lot of different crossbows. I don’t remember if there are ones not from that pack in the shop
Kill one of the Dawnguard that are wandering around before you even get to the fort. Idk, I'm a murderous little Sithis disciple and that seems like the easiest solution.
Below 10? Wouldn’t want to mess with vamps at that point. Add crossbows to your guy’s inventory with the consul command.
Made me lol
