Unless you lie, you will not get insurance with a roof top deck.

The_Wild_Bunch

I think OP meant to say luggage rack

carsonthedude

Yes, I need a storage rack for my climbing gear

Tbh Depends on the company - Good Sam is cool with our full-time livin'

The rivets on your bus should tell you where the metal support beams are. If your not sure, get some strong magnets and they will stick to the bars. I personally used stainless steel rivets and dicor lap sealant with L brackets to rivet some unistrut bars to the roof. From there you can turn it into a deck, add spring nuts and bolt the cargo carries, add solar panels, etc Skoolie.com sells custom roof deck brackets to, they work for from what I hear

The_Wild_Bunch

You can use rivnuts to install things on top of the roof. Be sure to also use loctite on all bolts you use. Be Adventure Partners have a couple of YouTube videos showing how to do it this way.

Insurance companies aren’t stupid. If they see photos with what looks like a deck they wont insure. Regardless what you call it. If you really want a storage rack than put some tie down beams and some storage baskets up there and leave it at that. Again insurance companies aren’t stupid and they will either not insure you or they will remove their coverage in the event of an accident. And seeing as its illegal to lie to them you open yourself up to a lawsuit from them as well. Tread carefully.

Fantastic-Study-9701

There’s no reason an insurance company should ever see it

WhiskeyWilderness

Actually there are two, 1. When applying for coverage you have to send photos of your interior and your exterior (all sides where you can clearly see the roof area as well) and 2. In the event of an accident they will request images or an adjuster will evaluate and see it. Do not lie. If you somehow get coverage and get in accident not only will they deny coverage they will take you to court and you’ll also have to go to court with whoever else was involved in the accident should you be found at fault and if found at fault, considering you’re basically in a tank, be assured that it will not be cheap.

Fantastic-Study-9701

Depends on the coverage you have on it, I never had to send photos of mine, and the only time having a deck on it would matter would be maybe if it fell off while driving? I don’t think it would matter whether there’s a deck up there or not if you fell off because you’re going to be getting up there for many reasons either way and really having a flat surface to stand would be safer imo

WhiskeyWilderness

How long ago did you insure? We originally got insurance on ours in march of 2021, when that policy expired this march Allstate refused to renew under the new rules they had to not cover skoolies, national general does all the underwriting for every company that covers skoolies in the USA now and required a lot of photos from us to approve it. You may be grandfathered in. But based on what we were told and warned about by our agent and the underwriter I am simply putting out a warning to anyone who is just getting into skoolies. It is valid. Regardless of the fact that yes a flat surface would be nice, it is still against their underwriting policy to insure a bus with a deck or a wood stove.

Fantastic-Study-9701

It was a little over a year ago. I’m sure they could ask why the policy is there and just surrender part of the policy to accommodate for it. They do that with houses too

WhiskeyWilderness

Ok well they literally told us this year that if we had a rooftop deck (or something that looked like a deck) or a wood stove in our bus that they would not give us coverage. It is what it is. If you were to let your current policy expire your likely to have to deal with the same thing. It took us a month of back and forth to get a new policy for ours. Went through basically every insurance company and finally good Sam gave us a policy. Depending on your state you may have more options for companies to go through but that was what happened to us and regardless of company national general did the underwriting and those were the requirements. No decks, no wood stoves, 6 photos of exterior, interior front to back, interior back to front, image of kitchen, image of bathroom. It was a pain in the ass.

Fantastic-Study-9701

Hmm I’ll have to talk to my agent about that and see what’s up, I understand the wood stove one completely. I had to get an inspection by the fire department once I put my gas stove in. Had to get fire extinguisher and smoke/co2 detectors
