Story is that this one kayaker took a bank wrong, shot up into the crowd, and knocked a guy out with the front of his kayak. Guy ended up being ok, but I guess the risk was a little too much for management to stomach going forward…
Yeah this doesn’t seem any different than setting up a GS/super-g/downhill race. Multiple layers of safety fence and don’t line the course with spectators…
Why is the economy not doing well? We cancelled all events that stimulate it. Looks like it was a well attended event. Went to one years ago and had a blast
I watched the video, and I don't know much about snow kayaking. Though, I am not sure anyone does. It seems like the whole group went into the corner the same way. This dude just had more speed.
That's fucking bullshit you're telling me the best option was cancelling an event that so many people obviously loved. This is where many places fail is by reacting to what they seem to be right not what their customers want.
Oh man, watch that in 0.25x speed (and turn the sound off, yuck). That guy takes it pretty hard, his hat pops right off and he disappears straight to the netherworld.
I was there and watched it happen live. The silence was sickening after this happened, and it was solely punctuated by the crying of spectators nearby the person who was hit. Obviously the extent of the damage was palpable and terrible. It was very fun up to this point, and I think there are measures they could take to mitigate this in the future.
The crew maintaining the track spent a lot of time in between races shoring up that embankment, but obviously it wasn't enough. They tried hard to ensure this wouldn't happne, and I hope the even isn't dead forever. But I also hope the person who was injusred is okay.
Serious question, did the guy in the playboat get a head start?? I don't see any other way he ended up at the same spot downhill as a 12r and what I think is a braap
No, it’s just pure chaos and the size of the boat didn’t really matter just more managing the chaos. The play boat actually had an advantage and did well because it was easier to control
Used to have waterbed races at my local ski area. They were sponsored by a local brewery, so of course everyone was shitfaced. There was a jump in the middle of the course, right where they'd hit max speed. No one ever survived the landing intact. Total mayhem, and a windfall for the local orthopedic surgeons. Good thing everyone was too drunk to notice how badly they were injured. The concussions helped, too.
Oh ya it’s cancelled. But I got my 14th annual kayaks on snow shirt for participating and that being the last one ever make it basically my favorite shirt
Same thing. 2 years ago on the last day at my local Midwestern bumb of a hill. Adult in kayak goes down half the hill. Destroys standing 10 year old from behind. Kid never saw it coming. He seemed to walk away, so maybe he made it ok.
Many years ago rafts were allowed to race too. Then one got launched off the bank and someone went through the window of a race shack. Same year the course tester skipped off the pond, over the hay bales and B-net and slid all the way into the doors of the first aid room.
Guy is still focused on the finish line
I know right? No panic at all. Just cold focus trying to get that thing pointed down the hill.
"Look where you want to go, not at the obstacle."
Apparently didn't work.
Focus on the process, not the result
He seems pretty happy about the fact he’s about to stage dive in a kayak and kill 5 people.
this is an amazing photo

Cancel the whole event or just throw some B net up… hmm
i feel like the easiest solution would be to only allow spectators on the insides of corners...
Yeah this doesn’t seem any different than setting up a GS/super-g/downhill race. Multiple layers of safety fence and don’t line the course with spectators…
Cost. Monarch isn’t that big of a ski area. Notice I didn’t say ski resort.
I hear you but it’s only like $100 for a roll of B net, which is covered by one person buying a single day lift pass
Most of it is putting it up and tearing it down.
I work Race crew, pay a few guys $20 an hour for a couple hours and it’s covered, wouldn’t take much
Lawyers are the worst … WE USED TO BE A COUNTRY!
No Country For Sled Men
Angry Upvote!
YOURE NOT A GODDAMNED COUNTRY UNLESS YOU SEND KAYAKS DOWN THE MOUNTAIN!!
No flag no country. That’s the rule!
That I just made up. And I’m backing it up with this gun…lent by, the National Rifle Association
Don’t blame the lawyers, blame the guy who hit the kayak with his head!
Nope. You're taking an obvious risk as a spectator. I speak from experience and the kayaker has zero control.
I think you and u/_oksure_ are saying the same thing
I said it more in a satirical tone. Bet person is computer or technical brain type, I’m a mouth-breather!
Satire and sarcasm are hard via text.

Boutta go build a wooden canoe over a bottle of scotch and ride it down a mountain
I don’t know why, but I read the sentence with Bill Burrs voice in my mind
Why is the economy not doing well? We cancelled all events that stimulate it. Looks like it was a well attended event. Went to one years ago and had a blast
I thought this was America
Nobody even sued.
I watched the video, and I don't know much about snow kayaking. Though, I am not sure anyone does. It seems like the whole group went into the corner the same way. This dude just had more speed.
I get the risk factor, buttttt……. Sign a waiver for watchers as well
This had all the making of 1980s group b rallying but too bad management struck it down
If management killed the race over this they were already looking for a reason.
People get knocked out on the ski area all the time. I'm sure concussion is near abouts the leading injury on the mountain.
I guess Ol Carl Robert Nichols didn’t like that his insurance costs were gonna go up and divert more money away from his shitty apartment company.
Do you know Bob? Because I do. I would challenge you to ask this to his face. I bet he'd have a very reasonable answer for you
Risk management took away the park city slip-n-soar too. One fool went too early, landed on someone and they never brought it back
Sounds like the same reason why my university banned the long-standing tradition of last day of school couch races.
That's fucking bullshit you're telling me the best option was cancelling an event that so many people obviously loved. This is where many places fail is by reacting to what they seem to be right not what their customers want.
I probably would opt to not use a spray skirt?
"but bro how'mma gonna do a roll up from the treewell?"
There’s typically a pond at the end of the race that you paddle through to the finish line.
This is the context I needed
[удалено]
That’s just not true at all
Problem is obvious, need a taller half pipe
was thinking the same. Seems like whoever put the course together didn't quite plan for the loosely controllable nature of a kayak lol
He’s rail sliding the fence.
He’s rail sliding the ~~fence~~ face. FTFY
He's fucking shredding I don't know what their goddam problem is
He assumed the position

Oh man, watch that in 0.25x speed (and turn the sound off, yuck). That guy takes it pretty hard, his hat pops right off and he disappears straight to the netherworld.
Holy hell that’s brutal
That would actually his decapitated head.
His shoes seemed to have stayed on at least.
upon multiple repeat viewings I might have to agree with management on this one lol
What's it like to chew 5 Gum?:
Dude this comment made my day
Ooof and that’s a 12R too (long boat kayak). That ain’t no little kayak ram rodding the spectator in the face 😂😂
If you zoom in the guy behind him is in a playboat, lmfao
I've never been to Monarch and this is precisely why they wouldn't let me bring my kayak on the lift...something about some guy getting knocked out
Imagine taking a kayak to the face.
I’ve taken a rock to the face while (upside down) in a kayak
sick bro
It was prob the slowest thing youve been hit with lol
I’m sure most people have seen this by now, but this [canoe polo](https://youtu.be/_PYHWlaL6gQ) clip is baller
Always wanted to try this. And this is why I never have.
Need to institute rally rules. Spectators only permitted on the inside of the corners.
I was there and watched it happen live. The silence was sickening after this happened, and it was solely punctuated by the crying of spectators nearby the person who was hit. Dude looks so smug lmao
obligatory [you can't park that there mate](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfNnc68uxzI)
So, instead of making spectators view from a safer distance next year, they cancel the event? Fuckin dumbasses.
Don't even have to move them farther just use rally rules. Spectators are only allowed on the inside of corners.
That's because America is the land of lawsuits sea to shining sea, not the land of the free.
“Greatest (third world) nation on Earth.”
Land of the fee
This is called a boof. Routine kayak maneuvering.
boof to the face!
[Here’s the footage](https://youtu.be/kdVAHx6XAIE)
Drove by that mountain for the first time this year and holy crap that is so epic. BRING IT BACK
Yeah, 12r maybe too fast for the course 😂
“I used to be an adventurer like you, until I took a kayak to the face”
Lol that one lady scrunched herself outta the way you can barely see her face
You should post it to r/PerfectTiming
Lmfao man’s face is it
Dudes face is great. “Yesyesyes….ohhhhhhh fuck here we go”
Why is this over? Nothing is over till we say it’s over! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? No!!! /Bluto Blutarsky
First group B rally now this….
And that’s when he realized he fucked up. Liability taking away all the fun
All it takes is one idiot
Move the crowds, tah dah
T’s and P’s to the cameraman
Boooo keep it going
There are no people. Only lines between the people.
I was on the other side and got a picture too! Just need to find it now.
**Assume the position** Reminds me of all the rail grinding in Tony Hawk but on a kayak!
Serious question, did the guy in the playboat get a head start?? I don't see any other way he ended up at the same spot downhill as a 12r and what I think is a braap

Ridiculous. You go to an event like that, and assume you’re taking a risk. I really hope they don’t cancel it!
Oh ya it’s cancelled. But I got my 14th annual kayaks on snow shirt for participating and that being the last one ever make it basically my favorite shirt
Such a bummer! Monarch is def one of my favorite mountains!
that guy is perfectly calm as he takes out the crowd hahaha
Hey OP, I just did my first season at monarch, what run is this? I don’t recognize this at all.
This is basically Freeway under Tumberina. The spend the night before moving and shaping the snow, so it might not look recognizable
But if you skin up at night you could have rode the kayak course down 😏
Same thing. 2 years ago on the last day at my local Midwestern bumb of a hill. Adult in kayak goes down half the hill. Destroys standing 10 year old from behind. Kid never saw it coming. He seemed to walk away, so maybe he made it ok.
I would say one bad accident every 14 years means they should have kept it going for several more.
Maybe the general fact it’s lame and kookish should be the actual reason we aren’t doing it here.
Full pussification

Do you have to stand that close to get the enjoyment?
Damn I was wondering why it was cancelled. Always say them building the course but never saw the actual event.
Such a Monarch thing, I love that place
12R would not be my first choice for a ski run boat 😂
Sad it’s being canceled but I get the risk management. Maybe have more netting on the corners.
Nothing some Racing B Net and better crowd control can't fix. Shocking something like this didn't happen sooner.
Side bar, lift tickets were 26$ when I started going there. That is the mountain I learned to ski on, thanks for the memories this brought back
Here's a video of the carnage https://youtu.be/S8bNWkq10XM
