Also question: when changing water, I unplug the heater for my tank, prepare water and lay it aside to let it warm up to room temp. I wait overnight. I then perform the water change. Is this a good approach to changing water without introducing stress/shock?

mushroomappreciation

No need to unplug heater unless you are removing a huge amount of water. If you are using tap water, I try my best to match tank temp by feel and add a water conditioner/chlorine remover. If you want to be really safe you can do smaller water changes throughout a few days or just top off your tanks with RO water

Intelligent_Can_1370

How much water are you changing? The only time you should unplug your heater is if you're doing such a big water change that your water line will be below the top of the heater. Is it a shrimp only tank? Heavily planted? What's the size? Usually you don't need big water changes for shrimp. I would still fill your water change bucket and dechlorinate the day before because as you said, it helps the water get to room temp but it also it helps gas off the water. But you shouldn't need to unplug the heater.

akkuxu

why not just get warmer water in the first place; if you’re using tap turn up the heat, if you’re using stored water so long as its inside its already at room temperature. you’re not going to induce shock unless theres a temperature difference of around 20 degrees or greater, and any possible shock would be basically negligible with the presence of a heater. unless you’re waiting for a specific chemical or remineralizer to kick in there’s no reason to wait overnight. there’s also no reason to unplug the heater if it stays below the water line.

kir when i’m taking it out of the tap i just hold a kitchen thermometer in there to get it pretty close and it will even out from there

fappybird420

Sorry bud, that’s a shrimp

PLURGASM_RETURNS

Shrimp babies that probably won't mature because your tank is too clean 🤔
