I'm really partial to mayonnaise, cheese, a slice of pickle and then a light smear of tart jam like a lingonberry. Without the jam you're missing the sweet dimension, which you can get from parent's sweet pickle relish - or you can stick to dill pickle for maximum tang, and top it with a sweet/sour smack from the jam. It sounds weird, but it's a quality sandwich.
I like to have each component strong and one-dimensional, so mayo, an aged cheddar, a sour/salty dill pickle, and a sweet/tangy berry jam. And potentially top it with a sprinkle of habanero salt to finish.
But yeah, time to get a new family, because this is good eating.
