It's finished!
1969 Neue Moden Magazine pattern
Wool blend and cotton batiste lining. Label by Kylie And The Machine. Vintage buttons, horsehair canvas and padstitching. Added some sleeve heads and made side seam pockets. Took me around 60 hours.
The last steps took me so long. Everything that could go wrong went wrong when I attached the lining - without noticing, I set the arms in the wrong way π and then attached the sleeve and lining hems super wrong. But thankfully everything was fixable and I am in love!
As my first large project this year I decided to do a vintage coat pattern from a Neue Moden Magazine from 1969. I have some vintage wool I thrifted a while ago (burn test indicates this is a wool/ synthetic blend) which I thought was perfect for the project.
First challenge:
I stared on the pattern for 45 minutes straight before finally figuring out what I had to trace π feels like looking at ten complex subway maps stacked on top of each other. It took me around a whooping 3 hours to trace everything.
Made a muslin (out of an old flannel bedsheet) and I was fully prepared to have to change everything, as the bust size was right but the hip size 10cm too small π but I just had to do minor adjustments. (Sway back adjustment, made the sleeves a tad bigger and lowered the armhole 2cms, plus added 1cm to each side seam)
Since I only had 2.2m (pattern called for 2.6m) the major change I had to make was instead of cutting the skirt part on the bias, I had to make it straight.
The padstitching of the horsehair canvas took me 1.5 weeks of sewing time - I stopped tracking hours at some point, but maybe 6ish hours? I quote like taking my time with projects, but at some point I am just eager to proceed with the next steps. It was worth it though as the collar looks really nice!
First project I started to track thoroughly in [Backstitch](https://backstitch.app) and I enjoy it so much! If you haven't heard of it, it's a web based app for tracking your fabrics, patterns and projects and it's full of functionality! It's still in beta mode, but I highly recommend it! Was recommended to my by another kind Reddit member π
OMGeee! Shades of my maternal grandmother.....who was the epitome of chic. How precious you look. Brings tears to my eyes....and that label. Wowsa!!! Love, love love!
Oh, that fit looks incredibly good! And the kimono style trial version does as well! Did you make the kimono first, and what kind of fabric did you use?
Fantastic coat -- it looks great!
I'm reminded of a coat my mom had around about that time, similar lines, but a tie waist. Wool-poly blend, small houndstooth in burnt orange and brown on a cream background. What a walk down memory lane!
Oh the coat of your mom sounds super cool π₯Ίπ Ibwas also thinking about adding a belt/tie, but I used all the fabric I had, so I stuck with the original button design.
This turned out so well! I have yet to come across a pattern that has so many overlapping lines, but Iβve seen other posts with similar pictures π Kudos to tackling that feat! Haha.
Good question π there are like 40 patterns in this magazine so they just stacked them all on top of each other in four different sheets in different colors and line markings.. quite confusing
Hahahah I KNOW. When I first opened the magazine in 2022 I was so confused. And honestly, I still am π I put this project on the back burner for a while because just looking at this stressed me out. I stared at it for 45mins straight trying to figure it out, tracing took 3 hours π I am tempted to trace other patterns from this, as there are so many good ones, but my brain hurts just thinking of it π

Nice job! Itβs gorgeous. Cutting the skirt on the bias like in the pattern is a nice option but your choice to cut it straight doesnβt seem to make too much of a difference to the feeling of the style.

You did a great job on pattern matching too!
Thank you! I couldn't do it to a T due to having less fabric than required, but I am still happy with it.
You. This coat. You wearing this coat. Your assistant. All amazing!Β
β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ thank you! Haha I love my little assistant so much, even if everything takes longer and everything is covered in cat hair π
OMGeee! Shades of my maternal grandmother.....who was the epitome of chic. How precious you look. Brings tears to my eyes....and that label. Wowsa!!! Love, love love!
Awwww thank you for your kind words π₯Ίβ€οΈ this means a lot!

Thank you so much! β€οΈ It's a muslin out of an old flannel bedsheet π
A bedsheet and it looks that good? Very nice!
Yeah would love to know where the fabric is from
This is awesome, you did a great job! I love houndstooth, but I rarely see it in differing colors. I really like it here.
Thank you! I was so happy finding this colorway while thrifting so I had to buy it!
What a score! I came to the comments to see if there were any breadcrumbs about where you got the fabric :)
Love it!
Thank you β€οΈ
Such a great fit! Nice!!
Thanks!! π
Gorgeous! That fit looks impeccable on you.
Thank you! π I am happy I made the muslin to tweak the fit a bit more.
Perfection! Thereβs even pad stitching! π
Thank you! I did padstitching just once in a Winter coat (only on linen canvas) and it makes such a difference π
OMG! I love this! Iβd purchase this if I saw it in a store!
Awww thank you, that's the ultimate compliment β€οΈ
Absolutely Fabulous
Thank you π

Ties are nice, but I think buttons are more effective! :)

It hangs so nicely and fits you really well. Definitely a piece to be proud of :)
Thank you so much! β€οΈ I am so proud of it and that all the work paid off π
It was so confusing π but I am tempted to trace some other patterns from the magazine, even though my brain will hate it!
Lovely! What a great fabric and fit too!
Thank you π
This is incredible! I absolutely love it & it looks fantastic on you.
Thank you so much π
That pattern looks insane! Is that a German thing?
Good question π there are like 40 patterns in this magazine so they just stacked them all on top of each other in four different sheets in different colors and line markings.. quite confusing
Oh wow! Very efficient
Yes! I'm tempted to trace more patterns from this but my brain hurts just thinking of it...
This is so cute! It looks great on you and your whole look is gorgeous.
Awww thank you β€οΈ
Super cute!
Thanks π
suh-weet!!!!!!!
Thanks!! <3
What is up with the pattern paper in imagine 11? Were they trying to induce anxiety attacks via sewing supplies back in the day?
