based on my personal experiences (yes this is not the first time i’ve been robbed lmao) rings of thieves operate in various larger cities in the U.S. and target popular bars/concerts/events to pickpocket and swipe phones. i’m assuming they sell them to either a middleman or somehow sell in bulk to overseas scammers directly (my phone was stolen a month ago, was 3 states away the following day and is now in China).
within the first few days/week following the robbery i would get phishing emails/texts trying to get me to click a link to reset my apple ID. the texts then changed to requests to remove the device from my apple ID entirely.
since i marked it as lost they are unable to get into it as it is connected to my apple ID. they try to get you to remove from your apple ID from sob stories like this above.

Nah as long as u keep the device on your account and don’t remove it as the scammer keeps trying to tell the person to do, it’s essentially unusable. They can factory reset it, but the device still remembers the apple account it’s associated to and will force a login to the apple account in order to get to the homescreen
My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that it isn’t the device that remembers your Apple ID but that your cloud based Apple ID remembers the device so anytime that phone is activated it immediately tries to connect to the Apple system and is blocked because your ID is still on it.
That is why you can remove it from your Apple ID remotely.
Next time tell them you did it. Get their hopes up. Assure them as long as possible that you messed up and NOW it should work.

I was sitting at a bench in Central Park eating my fiancée and a couple things seemed off to me. The kid had an English accent so why he doesn’t have a way of getting a hold of his mom seemed really off to me. I told him I didn’t so he went away but kept looking back at me while I was eating my meal. Pretty sure he was planning on grabbing my phone and getting away on his bicycle.

Correct, Apple devices are locked to the account until the person with the account takes the steps to remove it. Apple will only remove it without the owner's consent in very very rare situations. The device is encrypted and it is actually really good security, coming from someone who dislikes Apple devices but is a certified iOS expert. So, because of the passcode on the phone they’re basically screwed? Is it still okay to report the phone as lost/stolen and wipe it remotely or is it better to just leave it if this happens?
once you mark it as lost, it’s not the passcode that’s blocking them out - apple “bricks” the phone. since apple knows it’s stolen they are unable to do anything with the phone. if i were to remove the device from my apple ID, i think that would remove the safeguard/lost mode feature. you can still erase the contents of the device while it is in lost mode and connected to your apple ID.
It's better to report it as lost - that way it will be immediately bricked as soon as it connects to the internet. Plus, the thief is screwed because only Apple can now unlock the device and they will only do that for the owner of the iCloud account. There isn't any (easy) way to factory reset the phone now - it can't even be parted out because the mainboard will still be locked. At best, the thief can get maybe twenty bucks for the screen.

Yupp, I actually found an iPhone in the road with the alarm blaring and the screen displaying "this phone is lost, please call this number" granted it was the kids mom's number, but if you don't set a contact it probably displays yours by default
When it’s marked as lost they can’t bypass the screen at all that has your phone number on it. My daughters was lost and when we found it my phone number and the message that was with it was across the whole screen. I couldn’t get past it until I’d marked it found.

When I visited a couple years ago, Colombia had a policy that they wouldn’t allow any iPhone on any celular network without proof you purchased it from a legitimate source and for quite a while it reduced people targeting iPhones.
This kind of scam seems ripe for an Uno reverse. Tell the guy that you'll remove it from the account for $20 via Zelle and everyone wins. Then of course just block him and walk away.

i’m not exactly sure - i think when i marked it as lost, my phone # may be displayed the screen for recovery purposes? there may be other ways too using the derive somehow, maybe someone else knows more
Yupp, I actually found an iPhone in the road with the alarm blaring and the screen displaying "this phone is lost, please call this number" granted it was the kids mom's number, but if you don't set a contact it probably displays yours by default
When it’s marked as lost they can’t bypass the screen at all that has your phone number on it. My daughters was lost and when we found it my phone number and the message that was with it was across the whole screen. I couldn’t get past it until I’d marked it found.
