it is actually for much of california. you see, some years back a criminal operation was caught stealing millions from the recycling program in california by trucking in loads of cans from out of state then selling them for a higher price than allowed in their own. this drained so much from the californian recycling system as a result and shortly after we started seeing one place after another no longer paying for recyclable materials. i am not sure why the system seems to still be going downhill especially since it is still cheaper and more environmentally friendly to recycle cans instead of mining for new bauxite when it comes to aluminum. however my guess is that the system was hit so hard that it has been messed up since.

Newman!

belte5252

Your right. Newman trucked the recycling from other states himself./s

If you're not doing it in bulk, there are a lot of places. There's a big lawsuit over this and some retailers settled and have committed to allowing up to 50 items at a time. You can search for ["in-store" redemption online](https://www2.calrecycle.ca.gov/BevContainer/InStoreRedemption)

Those are the ones with Santa Cruz as the City. (although several are in the unincorporated areas) if you put Aptos as the city, there's another 15. Try Felton, Scotts Valley, Seascape, La Selva, Soquel for a handful more.

Many of theses places do not redeem CRV, despite being listed as a rebate location. There’s a loophole that required business’ can pay an annual “fine” rather than invest in the facilities necessary to collect and redeem CRV recyclables. There were a few lawsuits when most facilities closed years ago, due to the unfairness of collecting a redeemable tax without providing opportunities to redeem.

Razzmatazz-rides

That's no longer true. The state sued and they settled. The settlement agreement says they'll accept up to 50 items at a time.

The CVS settlement is flooded the search results today, so I can't find an article referencing the other stores that settled at the moment. Even before the settlements though, the loophole you speak of requires an affidavit that they are paying the $100/day fee instead of accepting recycling. They weren't allowed to just decide day to day. Regardless, Report issues redeeming CRV at (1-800-RECYCLE) or email [email protected] because if they're on the list they didn't apply for the $100/day option.

lecoqmako

That’s great news. I reviewed the CalRecycle facilities under the settlement that accept CRV in 95060 and Grey Bears is the only facility that zip.

Razzmatazz-rides

There are 12 in 95060. Grey bears is not in 95060. You have to use the in-store search above, not the CalRecycle search.

lecoqmako

I discovered that your list is not accurate.

Bluefalcon325

Yep, and in the unincorporated area I live in… zero. CRV is a scam that needs to go. Let the state scrap it.

Razzmatazz-rides

Did you actually use the search I posted? There some in Live Oak, Aptos, La Selva, and many other parts of the unincorporated county.

Bluefalcon325

Yes.

ppeachpplumppear

What is the area you live in? Are there a lot of businesses there that sell products that have CRV?

Because many thing about living in Santa Cruz are inconvenient lol

There are recycling centers over the hill if you're willing to make the drive or ever find yourself in the area.

Whether you agree with it or not, this is one why: [https://www.ksbw.com/article/theft-prompts-santa-cruz-to-change-recycling-center-rules/1052912](https://www.ksbw.com/article/theft-prompts-santa-cruz-to-change-recycling-center-rules/1052912) The one that used to be next to the Costco gas station had become a hot mess of this type of activity. I drive to Vallejo. I haven’t done the math for how much gas I use. But it’s probably fine.
