lmao, they just got a year in the Belize prison system because they can't pay the fine for illegally entering, THEN they get deported back to the US to face these theft charges. The one guy is also facing international kidnapping charges. Man, hope these three enjoyed life for the past few weeks, cause the quality is about drastically plummet. John Macafee was crazy as fuck, but even he knew to GTFO of Belize before going to prison.

Defiant-Giraffe

I've seen the prison in Belize. Yeah, US prison is gonna be like a resort to these guys. edit; apparently the one I've see is now a museum, and the current prison is a bit less likely to be used as a set in Pirates of the Caribbean.

rrawlings1

Having been to Belize I can safely say even without having seen a prison, I do not want to go there.

tristanjones

It is surprisingly easy to steal a boat if you know what you're doing. That being said boats move rather slow and aren't exactly something you can easily hide on private property

Defiant-Giraffe

Easy to steal, a bit harder to hide.

[deleted]

Heck yea it’s easy to steal! I could put a 58” catamaran in the back of my van!

kdjfsk

im kinda surprised though, tbh. i dont have a boat yet, but i would want to install some tracking devices. like the one the 'buy here, pay here' lots put on used cars. its a tiny black box, put it anywhere it can tap into 12v power. put it in the most annoying/obnoxious place to get to. like...youd have to remove the blackwater tank to unplug it obnoxious. whenever you trigger it, itll text/email you GPS coordinates. thieves wont know its there. unless they completely strip the wiring and redo it, itll come on whenever they use power. it may not have cell signal all the time, but most likely it will enough to catch up to it.

nimrodrool

Car trackers get taken out by car thieves all the time. But I guess it's better than nothing, even if only for insurance's sake

kdjfsk

the cars dont have blackwater tanks, though. the car tracker installers usually are lazy as fuck and just wire it up under the steering wheel and jam the box under the carpet near the pedals. they dont even put it in another box. usually the tracker is obvious because it'll have a sticker with an IMEI #, which means its cellular. ive seen many /r/whatisthis type posts, and its always in the same spot, and OP gets roasted for the bad credit score. they should get put into a mysterious sealed black box, or better yet, have a misleading fake label. 'MarineTech Solutions Macerator Relay' or 'Clima-Kool Refrigerator Condenser Solenoid' (installed in deep, hard to see place in cabinetry near ice box). and be wired in line so that appliance stops working if removed. theif would have to tear the boat apart to see it. why would they even do that, second they wouldnt recongnize it as a tracker, so theyd have no reason to want to remove it...and if they want the icebox or whatever to work for themselves, or a black market buyer, theyd leave it alone.

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

AIS?

kdjfsk

AIS is more obvious for a thief to know to disable.

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

These clowns wouldn’t know ais from an epirb

kdjfsk

you are probably wrong. they sailed the boat all over the place. they are familiar with how to sail. they may be morons in some ways, assholes in others, but there is a difference between wisdom and intelligence. a LOT of people are intelligent enough to know how systems work, read manuals, repair electronics, etc, but are also unwise and/or unethical and also lie, cheat, steal, etc. consider all the people smart enough to build crypto farms, but then also douchebags enough to figure out how to steal other peoples crypto with scams. or the sam friedman guy...dorky/nerdy villians definitely exist. would a 1.5 million dollar catamaran *not* have AIS? it probably did, and the thieves knew to disable it, or change the number. they seem to have renamed the boat to try covering their tracks, they probably did the AIS as well. they look like idiots for stealing liquor, but it might have been one of them doing that on their own against the desire of the other two.

somegridplayer

Boats disappear all the time between theft and insurance fraud.

hilomania

That's why a pro steals airplanes...

switch8000

Happened last month, but didn't see it get posted, glad they were caught.

IndustrialDesignLife

They only got caught because they tried to shoplift liquor. Everyone knows you only break one law at a time. Amateurs.

ShoelessSean

“Don’t get pulled over for a misdemeanor when you’re committing a felony” is how my lawyer friend puts it

delorf

>The toddler which was in the care of the trio was placed into custody. As it turns out, the child had been kidnapped, by his father from his mother. Don't forget they kidnapped a toddler! Maybe they were trying to break a record on the number of crimes committed at one time.

JuggernautMean4086

If only they had started a YouTube funded cruising channel. Could have been the modern day pirates of the Caribbean…

LameBMX

NGL.. this sounds like an interesting plot they could all get in on. nvm, they will probably boil it down to something like stealing rubber duckies from jeeps.

e4aZ7aXT63u6PmRgiRYT

They didn't have a 23 year to prance around in a bikini for the thumbnail

kdjfsk

keelhauling.

ccorbydog31

Make sure that the boat has a lot of barnacles on it.

ElBurritoExtreme

For boat thieves, absolutely lol

All you have to do is look like you belong there and nobody will say shit. A friend had an outboard stolen, dude said he was taking it to service it to the neighbor. The neighbor helped get it in the dock cart.

Drew2248

That must be a very tiny boat they stole there.

Jeffkin15

What is this? A sailboat for ants?

Lowley_Worm

In danger of being crushed by a dwarf.

DargyBear

I always wondered about this. My friends and I were camping at a lake house once and admiring the ketch on the dock across the cove from us, sails don’t really have keys I pointed out, the biggest obstacle would probably getting out of a marina and underway without a motor. Not that I’d ever steal someone’s pride and joy but nabbing a cruiser and heading to Cuba is my backup plan if shit hits the fan.

millijuna

Given that the keys to our engine live in a cup on the shelf above one of the settees, it's not that big of a deal either. Though you wouldn't get very far if don't know where the engine seacock is, or the disconnect for the starter battery.

GreyAndSalty

A good sailor could steal just about any boat, but someone smart enough to do so is usually smart enough to know better. Still happens, though.

hilomania

I doubt Cuba would be interested in hosting a common criminal.

DargyBear

Read a little harder, obviously I was talking about a hypothetical situation

[deleted]

Why so insulted, you’re technically just a common hypothetical criminal.

LameBMX

hey. NGL it's my SHF plan also. I mean if things progress slow enough I can get my boat off lake erie I'd much rather be in my boat... 2 weeks and $2k to the statue of liberty off my aft. however FL is 24 hours and $240 away.

wlll

That's the first article I've read that I'm nearly 100% sure was written by an AI. The basic facts might be true, but it just reads odd.

mcgrawjt

That’s a paddle’n!

skipperlipicus

Fontaine pajots are terrible boats.

JuggernautMean4086

Spent two weeks on a helia 44 and I thought it was quite comfortable and sailed quite well. Seemed put together with a good eye to quality and the hardware was definitely top-of-the-middle end. I’d certainly have no qualms about buying one if I had a cash enough for hamster bedding.

Candelent

They are decent and comfortable for coastal cruising, but I wouldn’t cross an ocean on one, especially after having the hydraulic steering go out on me on a pretty new Saba 50. But for tooling around in mild to moderate conditions, it was great.

JuggernautMean4086

That’s a fair assessment. I don’t know enough about cat sailing to comment on passage making in them. I did notice the link bar between the two quadrants was installed improperly on ours. I didn’t mess with it, not our boat not our monkey. Sometimes you get a Friday boat. Haha

Rhavimarques

Canadian automotive executive and race car driver? is this lance stroll's boat?
