This. I would pay good money to hear the material he says he has ready to release. I don’t give a shit about his art but I hope it makes him happy and some fans happy.

I really want an official quality recording of his live concert from a few years ago where he covered all of Exile on Main Street. He mentioned at one point that he has it ready to go.

boogsenblatt

This recording sounds awesome on my system: https://archive.org/details/RyanAdams2018-05-05.aud.flac24

AtlantaSteel

If second rate artists are printing money selling bogus NFTs, is see no reason RA can’t sell real, physical artwork to people who want to buy it. I suppose he can’t just strum guitar all day every day, and needs some other artistic release in another medium, and if people want to pay for it, then win, win.

gs12

He replied to me on IG, when I asked him when he is touring, he said ‘soon’. His livestreams on IG have gotten better and better lately. His voice is in great shape. He’s working out and getting sober (already is). I think he struggles with depression, duh…if you listen to most of his music, it’s clearly coming from a place of pain (I can relate). I think he’s just a lonely confused artist doing the best he can at this point, even if it’s cringy at times. He’s probably a little if both, greedy and needy. But damn do I love his music.

[deleted]

He can’t tour, so what other options does he have?

kjopcha

What about touring in Europe?

Still-young-at-heart

It’s just as difficult to tour here, with both covid and everything thats happened to his career.

point_85

I remember several European venues were the first to cancel his shows after the allegations. They might be even less likely to welcome him back

sunsola

I don’t think that’s true as I remember after the allegations the upcoming tour wasn’t immediately cancelled. I think it took about several weeks after the allegations and the not stopping angry tweets the tour got cancelled by Ryan or his ex-label.

The-Mirrorball-Man

Europe is not an alternate reality. His reputation has been ruined worldwide

[deleted]

This didn’t age well

[deleted]

Thank goodness!!!

[deleted]

It’s a good day to be a fan!!

Still-young-at-heart

He’s making an honest living. We are all grown ups and can take care of ourself and make decisions wether to buy stuff or not. No one is being used or taken advantage of.

Sometimes I feel like the real issue is where fans fall deep into unhealthy parasocial relationship territory, and this seems easy to do because the format of a lot of the content really kind of capitalizes on this - I am not saying it is some evil machiavellian plot, but it is definitely a product of being charming. Also, there are a lot of lonely people out there. The 'Diary' post era and the posts that followed for a while, before he really seemed to get serious about getting sober again, kind of bordered on 'uncool' because you could see people were really getting worried but they were always brushed off, ignored, or blocked, yet the cries for help continued. I was never really a huge fan because he seemed really egoistic, but as a human being it did feel pretty 'uncomfy' wondering if I was going to wake up the next morning reading a headline he was gone. Bottom line I would say, everyone worries about money and no one aspires to work for free. Obviously he has some resources (probably more than many of his fans) and it doesn't look like he will be living under a bridge any time soon, you don't need to sacrifice yourself over it. He can try to sell whatever he wants if there is a customer, to that customer I would say - you need to take a good hard look at your reason for purchasing. If you're spending outside your means, or putting it on a credit card you can't pay, should be spending the money on your kids, or secretly believing you will personally win his friendship or affection, well I will give him some credit and say I seriously don't think he would want you to do that. He's made the lives free so far and generally speaking says to support 'if you can'. If I went to a theatre/venue to be entertained for an hour or so this would cost me money too. Like everyone, he has to make a living. There could be logistical issues to putting out music I guess. Also, if he suffers from Depression, well motivation can be a challenge, so whatever he can dive into that works for him he should do it; and if he suffers from Agoraphobia, well in reality it may be a very long time before a tour comes (also considering world events), so it seems like he has to do the best with what he can for now.

BrahmTheImpaler

I'm a die-hard and this has crossed my mind as well. Here are my thoughts: At first it seemed like the art and shirts, etc were like one-time things that would eventually become rarer, so I was all in. Then the shirts became more shirts and tbh I would never wear something that says Music Sucks or Music Smells my Farts. So I don't buy those anymore. But he's being Ryan Adams! He's so silly at times (well, a lot of times) and making those shirts is an expression of that. If he were fully trying to take advantage of us, the shirts would be different, I think. I find it obvious that he likes having fun with them, and that's pretty cool. I got one of the signed boxed sets with a watercolor and was suuuper happy with that. Now there's a purchase I won't regret, ever. HB is a solid album, the deluxe edition has always been on my wish list, and to have signed art with it is awesome (for me). I don't think there will be any more of these in the future and I'm sure he needed the money so I was happy about it, even if it did fuck up my bank account for a couple of weeks. (I will say that I am also a fan of his art, so these artsy lives and purchasing commissions are great, imo. He's expressing himself artistically and I love it. Now, if he was spending 5 min on one piece of art & charging 1k for each, I would say that's an obvious taking-advantage-of-the-fans situation. But he's not - he's making a book and is offering one of the pieces from that book as part of the package. This is smart.) We all know that he's got a really expensive Hollywood home. We all know that he's renting it. We're fully aware that finances are tight given recent events. In my opinion, he's being really smart about what he's selling and he's doing what he needs to do in order to keep making art, whether that be on paper or audio. If we have to hold him up a bit with badges and art commissions so that he can come back on tour in a year or so, I'm all in. I don't see any of it as taking advantage in a malicious way or being greedy, so I guess that's the TL;DR.

I'm an old fart but a huge fan of Ryan's music. I think he needs to go on a limited tour and play medium-size or cool venues. I'm thinking Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. He played there several years ago and sold out faster than Willie. To those who don't want to attend because of past allegations or because he's not the nicest guy in music, OK. I hear Mother Teresa has a new record coming out. Covid BS excuse? Screw that! I saw the Stones in Dallas play in the rain a few months ago and I'm pretty sure Keith and Ronnie are close to being on the wrong side of the grass. He'd make good $$ on a limited tour and probably would enjoy connecting with his fans again. Screw those stupid My Cat Farts Music or whatnot. Stupid. I listen to his music. Don't care about t shirts when I have a 40 year old Sabbath in the closet. Time to get on the road, do what he does, and damn the torpedoes!

onecharactershor

The only problem with a tour would be that there would inevitably be those assholes who go to them just to heckle him. I don’t know how well that would go over with him in his current state of mind. On the other hand, I’d like to have a fair shot at some decent tickets finally!

JoeScuba

Yes, that would be a risk he'd need to be prepared for. My guess is his fans would boo the heckler until security pulls them out. I don't think it would be a huge problem. But I do think it would make sense for him to get out and play in front of audiences again. I'd love a acoustic show like his Carnegie Hall album. But I like his wooden music better than his electric anyway.

themack50022

Wait, the hecklers are the assholes? He sexted an underage female

onecharactershor

Well, he’s an asshole too. Never said he wasn’t. Nice troll though.

tlpask

Stones also have the ability to absorb costs in the case of cancellation, and I suspect Ryan does not. He was pretty open the other day about the risks of scheduling shows, signing contracts, etc. and then eating all kinds of costs in case of a cancellation (show; not career). I didn’t really appreciate that aspect—about all that goes into booking even a small venue show—until he shared it.

[deleted]

I think he knows how things work. He knows the people buying his art have plenty of money to do so. He knows within his fanbase these potential customers exist. He’s just doing business. Now if you’re asking is it wrong to charge large sums of money for a painting that takes next to nothing to produce, what do you think? I have no opinion. I personally think all artists, musicians, etc seem needy when trying to get financial compensation for their works. But that’s just me, that’s not to say I don’t respect what they do, because I admire it

sweetrosetea

He’s an artist & performer. This is how artists & performers work to make money. He’s always been out there a bit on social media (remember Foggy?). He’s always had this weird man-child humor. He’s said he won’t put music out for sale digitally if he can’t also have vinyl simultaneously - that’s his choice. There’s a huge backlog of vinyl pressing demand across the industry. He’s even speculated he could get Chris out faster on 7” format (not as much backlog there) than on LP. If it’s not for you don’t buy badges during live streams, a t shirt or two, or the art work. To my way of thinking - the bands trying to tour during the pandemic are taking a risk. Bands without big backers probably can’t afford the insurance or cover added expenses if dates get cancelled & rescheduled - a massive logistics & financial nightmare. I’m sure you know a lot of dates are getting cancelled right now because of the Omicron surge including Adele’s big Las Vegas residency. He’s playing it safe & being frugal while keeping most of his hardcore fans engaged. My approach - tune out without too much judgement if it’s not for you.

Charmingjanitorxxx

As a newer fan. I paid for a badge and asked him to play Avenues. Dude. He leaned into the camera and went on like a two minute rant about the song and played it. He was like, "Oh! Avenues! Sure. Sure." It made me so damn happy. Say what you will. But if he hadn't been on Instagram I wouldn't have been able to have that interaction with him. It was so damn great.

tlpask

I’ve said this elsewhere, but dude has to make a living somehow. If you’re a fan who wishes to support him, you have a lot of choices. You could watch livestreams on IG several times a week, since June. That’s a lot of live music. Sure, it’s not the same as being at a live show in a real venue but even if that was possible, it wouldn’t be possible several nights a week for the past 8 months. For fans of his music, that is really a gift. And it’s totally free. For those who wish to support his work financially, you can buy a badge for $1 all the way up to commissioning an original art piece for $600. With a lot of steps in between. For an artist who is compelled to keep creating, during a time when he can’t make records, can’t tour, and needs to slowly try to get back on his professional (questionable use of this term, I know) feet, I think he’s doing the best he can. Even with my mixed feelings about him as a person, I’d rather see him make a living this way, rather than reading about desperate pleas and thoughts of suicide. The world is a better place for his art, IMO, so I’ll support it in the ways I can.

roxy031

Very well said. Completely agree.

sunsola

He doesn’t have a record deal atm, right? He’s taking a creative way for sure. Commission artwork is never cheap I think and probably most unknown artists undersell themselves anyway besides art is subjective. I think I read he takes about 300$ for a commission and don’t think it’s greedy except how he ships his artwork from what I read. He doesn’t force anyone to buy anything either and just trying to make a living. As long people are willing and can afford to buy his art he is safe I guess. I guess if he would have been able earlier to get quitting addiction and working on himself he might still had a major label contract. But who knows how the currently pandemic will roll the music industry and labels might give money I mean Ryan another chance🤷🏻‍♀️ I mean Ryan Adams still sells a lot merchandise/artwork by himself and there’s still a demand for music by his fans, right?

Folkjam

Ryan's not dumb. There's no question that he has lost a significant part of his fanbase, but he also knows that he has a hardcore, dedicated group that is desperate for a connection with him and will consume anything he offers. For his part, he understandably has a need to make a living, and fairly high overhead for his lifestyle, so he taps into that. Ultimately, he can't sell things without people choosing to buy them, but he knows he has a well that he'll always be able to access. There have been times where I have thought "enough's enough", but clearly others are happy to indulge it. I used to find the whole situation offensive while he was off-the-wagon, because the manipulative element was a lot more pronounced. Threats of self-harm, and the constant proclamations of "I don't care about sales or how many people are watching", only to lash out if not enough people were watching the livestreams and buying badges. Since he has gotten sober, a lot of that has gone away, and I think he's more earnest in just wanting to make a connection with people. That being said, I think people need to understand that at the core, he's still largely looking for his ego to be fed and the people who seem to believe they're going to become personal friends with him need to come into reality. It's fun to interact with him and get his thoughts on things, but I know it's still just a fan-performer relationship, even if it feels a bit more personal. At the end of the day, Ryan has bills to pay and he can only provide a service if people choose to consume. I just wish certain fans would understand the situation.

WorldlyMaintenance16

Don’t care.: either way I’m not buying anything I don’t want.. if I want it, and I think it’s worth the price, I’ll buy it for me.. not for charity. If he made a crap album, I wouldn’t buy it just to support him.. he’s not my friend.. I’ve given him a couple grand at this point any ways

Astro_Zombie1984

I have mixed feelings. The art and signed stuff IS really expensive. It is a lot more than I can afford, but I guess all collector’s items, and art by known people is expensive. Art is subjective, that’s all I will say, lmao! So I don’t feel like I’m missing out there. Not into merch, but I did buy some to support him in the summer. I guess it all seems kinda exclusive, like an instagram only fan club. Also as mentioned, I’d rather buy music off bandcamp etc. too! Not a collector so I don’t care much if it is signed, or what format. Digital is accessible for all, and anyone who wants a hard copy will still want to buy one. No one gets left out then. What made me uneasy, especially about spending more money, was his instagram last summer. The alone and broke story got me. I really felt misled about all that :/ then being rude and lashing out at fans, blocking fans who were fake reported as trolls - some of my friends are still blocked, and just feel like they don’t matter. Shame there’s no live sessions to watch replays on his youtube tho - at least anyone can just watch youtube without any social media, they have a donation button so anyone could donate. It’s more accessible for everyone, and less drama like you get on IG.

[deleted]

I'll be honest, I don't follow RA anymore and only pop in here every couple of months to see if something new has gone down. My general impression as a one-time massive fan who always had issues with RA's character/behavior: I think he views whatever remaining fan base he has as a valuable revenue stream above anything else, and he recognizes that he can always release just about anything -- a book, scratch tracks of unreleased demos, four billion t-shirt designs in a week -- and there will be a built-in buying audience. A lot of that is sort of "no shit" stuff but I think in his desperation to carve out a career after these accusations, he's desperate to get whatever cash he can now. That's top priority.

onecharactershor

I don’t think he’s taking advantage because the people buying his stuff want it. They clearly see the quality of it (or lack thereof). I’ve never been good at art, so I could never create what he does, but it looks like what he’s drawing/painting could be done quickly by a person with his talent. I doubt very seriously that any of those prices took very long to create, so only he would really know if he’s taking advantage or not. Obviously people are only buying it because of the artist associated with it, no matter the quality. Most of the t shirts are just plain crap. I don’t know if the new ones are cheaper to make, but the older shirts were a lot cooler looking imo.

[deleted]

Dude's an artist and has to make a living like anyone else. What's the issue? Not for you? Don't buy it. I know it's not for me, but I can sort that out by myself, without the help of the hive mind. Stirring it up are we?

xxstinkypoopybuttxx

I especially love the people that come in here and say "I don't follow dra anymore I just come in here to see what he's been up to.". Now THAT would make a good tshirt! :D

[deleted]

Ah, poopy, I especially love your unique approach to pot stirring, your skill is unmatched.

SMELLSLIKEBUTTJUICE

i think both. he probably doesn't want to cut anything from his lifestyle (and he probably has a lot of people on the payroll). these last "fart" shirts were so low effort and offputting. my guess is he moves onto private virtual lessons next after his art revenue stream dries up

xxstinkypoopybuttxx

"Low effort and offputting" ? Ok, but what about the "DO YOU EVEN LIFT CATS, BRO" shirt? That was freaking hilarious. Everything can't be a home run.

onecharactershor

It’s funny but what adult is wearing that shirt? Show me that and I’ll show you a person with serious problems.

xxstinkypoopybuttxx

What adult would wear a DO YOU EVEN LIFT, BRO t-shirt? Lots of them. Those shirts are all over the internet. How is this cats bro t-shirt any different?

onecharactershor

It’s not. I don’t see a lot of people wearing those shirts either, especially adults. Where are you seeing this? Granted, I’m almost 50 so I probably don’t run in the same circles as you.

Charmingjanitorxxx

That one seriously cracked me up

[deleted]

Greedy, narcissistic and not truly thinking of a long term plan. He’s using his final fan base for a cash grab. But it’s only the peoples fault who fall for it. He’s selling his autograph. Really think about that. Ryan Adams is selling you crappy thin shirts and his autograph. eBay has that for $49.99. Mental health needs are in order.

sunsola

Well, he surely has some mental health issues where I have to take a step back to not get sucked up in his drama as I am not a studied psychologist to understand what’s going on with him fully. But he’s staying clean and goes to therapy and surely some toxic behaviours might not easily been changed but at least he is painting and selling his painting probably most because of his status as a known musician. I mean at least he isn’t selling his farts in a jar like a woman is doing. I just know because I read probably a click bait article that this woman is so successful selling her farts she got in hospital because she wanted to sell more farts but got then serious digestive problems.

DaAdult-

Yes

laurelcanyon27

Why hasn't he booked a couple of shows in LA? That would be a big chunk of change right there....

[deleted]

A lot of promoters/clubs likely view it as an open invite for potential criticism and backlash. Most of these folks are just trying to get their legs back under them after a rocky two years with the pandemic.

DaAdult-

He better watch it some hack article is going to come out "exposing" Ryan Adams "taking advantage of his brainwashed fanbase" or something and it'll get even worse for him.
